I have a dream of randomish and procedurally generated storylines.

Imagine: You start a game as the Humans. You know random stories are checked, but you have no idea what they will be. For the first 20 years, nothing looks too amiss--except, for some reason, the Slukens are allied with the Ackdarians and running rampant together. Finally, just when you're starting to think the storylines don't work, you get the popup:

Warning! A Great Axis of Evil has been formed! The Sluuken/Ackdarian empires have united, and intend to take over the galaxy! They've declared war on all the other powers, unless they accept subjegation.

Or...

Sir! A private alien enterprise has formed a local monopoly on steel! They say if we agree to their ridiculous prices, we can have the egde over all the other Empires. Should we trust them, or try to break them up?

ect...

It would be so, so easy too if you just integrated it with the existing events system. You could do EU3-style event-story-chains, but with the character and depth that makes Distant Worlds unique.

For example, you're a Wekkarus Monarchy, and you've just beenmining away in isolation on the edge of space:

Event 1.) M'lord! Because our economy booming, and our tech is reasonably up to date, there is a large faction of militarists rising within our Empire! Should we support them, or retain our peaceful ways?

Let's say you choose to support them. Nothing happens for awhile, but you're kind of worried...

Event 2.) Militarists Rise to Power! M'lord! The Militarists have risen to power. They've agreed to spare your life, and avoid a civil war, if you accept their demands right away. Should we fight, or should we give in to the Militarists?

Let's say you give in. You're now a Military Dictatorship, but you didn't have to fight a civil war (so, government change w/o the planets splitting off, maybe?). Maybe you even have the same leader. Remember, this is just one way it could go. It could have been a HUGE epic sort-of-scripted Civil War if the player had decided not to accept the demands, right? But let's go a little further. It's been ten years since your revolution. Your economy is still doing good, but being a Military Dictatorship has it's draw backs.

Event 3.) Sir! The Navy demands action! Our weaker Atuuk neighbors are ripe for slavery and exploitation. As we are a Military Dictatorship, we rule by the Navy's will! Should we do as they say, or risk the consequences?

You could then either get a massively easy war against the Atuuks (which, maybe, could start another random event chain leading to a world war, or a mega Atuukian counter-offensive!) or defy your Navy, which could have other consequences.

But all of this would be random. No pre-canned stuff, or it would get old. Can it be done? I honestly do think it can, since EU3, V2, and HoI3 all have something similar. The trick would be making it worthy of the Distant Worlds universe, and not just random mish-mash like it tends to feel in EU3.

Great ideas you have here

I was also thinking it would be nice to have some randomness in the shakturi storyline. So maybe instead of the erutkah refugees always turning out to be the bad guys, in one game the ancient guardians reveal themselves as shakturi and the erutkahs are just refugees and come to your aid or in another game the ketarov are the shakturi or the erutkah are still the bad guys but the ancient guardians don't ally with you cause they are in reality the pet killing machines of the shakturi and fight alongside them or my favourite idea: you yourself turn out to be shakturi

You just blew my mind. If you're ever in Oregon, you get a beer and a cookie.

Some fun ideas there, although I'm quite certain they would only show up in another expansion -- they're too much for an update!
