I had a copy of pc with the update 1.05, grand campaigns 39 and 40 on an older laptop. i recently purchased a new one and installed my game on it, downloaded the patch, then got a new key for 39 and 40 so that i could download them.

The problem i am experiencing is that upon starting a campaign, i can not upgrade any units in the beginning. I noticed that on both grand campaigns, there is not pre-movement turn, the one where you can upgrade and place your units.

In addition, I can't move any units at all. This goes for the regular campaigns as well as the Grand Campaigns.

You can't move the units?
That sounds like there's an audio MCI issue.
Could you please rename the subfolder "Audio" in Panzer Corps folder to "-Audio"?
Test and report back, please. You will not hear a sound but let us see if it's moving.

I reinstalled both the original PC, the 1.05 update, and both 39 and 40 campaigns. seems to be working now. The only question I have now, is whether or not on the very first turn of the campaign, I am supposed to have a pre-turn 1 like I did with the original campaign (to purchase, upgrade, and place my units)?

I notice on the Grand Campaign 39, 4 core slots available but most of the units on the board are gold (which I thought meant my core units). So I am a little confused.

As far as I understood your question, yes, you can buy and place in turn 1. You can only move and attack from turn 2 up.

It means you can buy up until more four units and deploy them. Those four units, in case you buy them, together with the other golden ones, are your core army for that scenario.
Note, that if you loose or disband one of your core units, it will free another core slot.
