I leave auto on for:
Colony Taxes (can't be bothered micromanaging this)
Colony Population Policies (doesn't have a big bearing in the games I play so auto is fine)
Troop Recruitment (but I still manually add new troops as well)
Research (but I override a lot. I leave on auto in case I forget to make changes)

I control:
Ship Design (but only so I can arm my mining stations otherwise most would be left on auto)
Fleet Formation (definitely don't want the AI making fleets)
Character Locations (don't really care if this is auto or not. They tend to start off where they are needed most)

The other settings:
Colonization: Fully automate (but I override all the time in game)
Ship Building: Suggest (can get annoying but I like to see what the AI would do)
Intelligence: Suggest (don't want the AI wrecking my rep or killing off agents)
Attacks: Suggest (similarly don't want the AI attacking indiscriminately but want to see opportunities)
Diplomatic Gifts: Manual
Treaties: Suggest
War Sanctions: Suggest
Facilities: Suggest (but I always follow these suggestions)

If many of the above settings are automatic then you will quickly lose track of your game. You will get warnings when you tweak but that is OK.

My tastes have changed with time. At first I let the AI deal with everything besides diplomacy. Now, I do everything except Ship Design. Although I do leave many, many fleets on Auto but since attacks are on manual, fleet formation is on manual, and they've all got a specific posture, that's actually a lot of micro-management.

And I wouldn't be surprised if most players had some wildly different ways of playing.

I have everything on manual except taxes and troop building. It's been that way since I started playing.

It depends.  I can handle most on manual, but in big galaxy i dont bother.  One thing I would not AUTO is ship design thou.

I'm a new player myself and started to do things manually really quick.

My automations are:

Constructors - I have 2  constructors as manual to set up certain bases quickly if needed. AI building policy seems weird though. New systems have nice stuff to be self sufficient or useful, but it's not taken into account i guess and queuing things is not fast enough most times.
Ship design - I love designing, but doing it takes way too much time (copy as new and obselete all button?) Wish the AI would take my designs into account and just switch parts like newer drives or reactors. Let's see what Elliot comes up with
Tax policy - Setting my preferences in the empire controls and let it loose

Everything else is on suggest or manual. I once had it all automated and heck my empire declared wars alot and got smashed everytime because my race hated the allies who loved me. Stupid government/chancellor/senate..whatever. It's really "dangerous"

I had everything but taxes (I've always kept those on auto) on suggest when I started playing. Turned them on manual one by one when I got hang of the games mechanics and got tired of suggestions opposing my own opinions and tactics.
Nowadays I play with everything but taxes on manual. Surprising as I've never thought myself as a person who likes MMing in strategy games.

The exact (and I mean down to every detail) same story here.
