Combat

The SS Thresher, 79 miles E of the Amami Group, hit a TK with 2 torpedoes, setting it ablaze and then underwent a horrific depth charging by the escort. She will now make for Wake Island in the hope of surviving the systems damage and flooding.

The SS Muskallunge was attacked by a PC and MSW a67 miles SE of Kagoshima. She then managed to strike a TK with a fish causing it to sink.

The SS Peto, 81 miles SE of Rabaul, sank a PG with 2 fish and then the other 3 PGs on the scene attacked her. Due to the damage sustained she will now make for Noumea.

Pagan was raided by 60 X B-25J and the base took light damage. No bombers were touched by the sporadic AA fire.

Mandalay was attacked by 123 X Liberator VI, 7 X Spitfire VIII and 24 X P-38G. A lone bomber was damaged as the base was moderately damaged; There were many secondary explosions and ground personnel had heavy casualties.

Maloelap was raided by 27 X PB4Y, 9 damaged, and the airfield had light damage. There were a couple of secondary explosions seen.

Jaluit was bombed by 43 X B-25J and 39 X P-38G. 13 Mitchells were damaged by the heavy flak as they did light damage to the port.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was hit by 22 X B-25J for heavy losses.

The Hopei Militia Division was attacked by 14 X Helen and had no casualties, though the effect of the attack further lowered what's left of the unit's morale.

The Japanese TF 86 miles W of Kai Island was attacked by 50 X B-24J and 3 X AP were struck at least once each leaving 2 of them burning. No planes were damaged. It was reported that troops were observed going into the water. Later on another attack was made by 12 X B-24J and an AP was hit 4 times, leaving it heavily damaged and burning. Again it was reported to have been carrying troops. 11 X Zeke were on CAP above some warships when yet another raid appeared. The 37 X B-24J hit 2 CAs once each. A Zeke was flamed and 2 others damaged while 3 bombers were damaged.

The Japanese TF 11 miles E of Aru Island was attacked by 9 X B-24J, 5 X Kittyhawk III and 12 X P-40N. 3 of the bombers were damaged by their intended targets AA fire. The BB, thought to have been the Ise continued on her way.

The SS Rasher, 75 miles E of Okinawa, struck a TK with 2 torpedoes issuing it's death warrant. The sub then silently slipped away before the escorts could locate her.

“The scoop is that the 1st Marine Division is going to leave here and head elsewhere,” the man tells Slim. “The scuttlebutt is that a doggie division is going to take their spot, like a doggie could ever replace a Marine.” Slim wonders if all of this is true and if it means anything at all to the 2nd Marines. He knows that there is never a shortage of scuttlebutt, but the source of this seems to have a pipeline direct from CENPAC HQs. Oh well, he thinks, time will tell.

Sam is watching a crap game and wishes that they'd let them out onto the deck of the ship, but for security reasons the answer is “stay below.” At least they're heading to a place where they'll get some rest and refit. He returns to his bunk and writes a letter to his parents telling them that he's fine and seeing places that he never heard of. He'd like to say more, but he knows that the censors would only delete it.

Elaine got 2 letters from Gil today and she sits by the fireplace reading them. She longs for warmer weather, but it's December and Pittsburgh can get pretty cold and the winter is just beginning. After reading the letters she thinks for a while and then writes back to Gil.

Major Smith is still pushing for a change in his assignment within the 1st Marine Division. He's summoned to HQs and kind of gets his wish as he now has the dubious honor of being sent to Wake Island to spend time making arrangement for the division when it arrive there, scheduled for late March.

Ed sits with his staff and gives them the job of planning for the invasion of the Marianas. “First will be Guam, then Tinian and finally Saipan. Saipan will probably be the heaviest defended of the 3, but we won't know for sure for a while yet.” In the meantime his TF steams towards Wake Island.

Combat

An IJN bombardment of Kai Island, inflicted heavy casualties and light damage to the port facilities. Japanese troops landing sustained very heavy losses. An IJN TF, near Kai Island was under an umbrella of 47 X Zeke when 30 X B-24J, 9 X Kittyhawk III and 6 P-40N struck. 7 X Zeke were destroyed (4 damaged) and 2 Liberators went down (9 damaged), 7 X Kittyhawk III were shot down and 4 X P-40N were trashed. No bombs found their targets. Then another raid of 8 X B-24J appeared and 41 X Zeke pounced on them. 4 fighters were damaged and 4 of the bombers were shot down. No bombs found the mark. The Zekes then went after 6 X B-24J, 3 X Kittyhawk III and 3 X P-40N. 4 X Zeke were splashed (1 damaged) while 3 bombers were destroyed, and 3 of each type of fighter went down. Again, no bombs fell on target. 31 X Zeke were aloft when 18 X Barracuda, 13 X Avenger II, 11 X Hellcat II and 8 X Corsair IV appeared. 5 X Zeke were destroyed as they tried to fend off the RN's attack. A Barracuda was destroyed (4 damaged), 3 Avenger II went down (5 damaged), a Hellcat II was shot down (1 damaged) and a Corsair IV was killed. The following ships were hit:
AP Yamafuku Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage and sinks
AP Tatuho Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AP Tazan Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AP Tarushima Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AP Kenshin Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
Japanese troops were observed jumping into the water to escape the burning vessels. Then came 6 more B-24Js and 39 X Zeke greeted them. A fighter was damaged and a bomber was destroyed. No ordinance did any damage. A second bombardment of the island destroyed a P-38G, caused heavy losses to the troops and did little damage to any facilities. Allied artillery caused light Japanese losses.

The SS Swordfish, 181 miles SW of Amboina, was attacked by 3 DDs to no effect.

A RN ASW attack, 16 miles S of Tenimbar, resulted in a Japanese sub being hit repeatedly.

Mandalay was attacked again by 107 X Liberator VI, 10 X Spitfire VIII and 25 X P-38G. A lone bomber was damaged by ground fire as the base was very heavily hit and ground troops sustained heavy casualties.

Maloelap was raided by 18 X PB4Y, 5 damaged, as they did light damage to the airfield and casualties were very light to the troops.

Jaluit was struck by 29 X B-25J and 39 X P-38G. 6 Mitchells were damaged as they dumped their bombs short and wide of the target.

The Hopei Militia Division was attacked by 9 X Helen and no losses were taken by either side.

Stick hangs around the briefing tent and mumbles to his buddies that this island is even worse than Wake. Of course somebody has heard some scuttlebutt that they will be reassigned to somewhere else soon enough and get to see plenty of action. Another one says that the Japs are afraid of their Corsairs. “The only losses we'll ever have in this war are pilot or mechanical failures.” They men all share a laugh.

Pete reads a newspaper that says that a Japanese fleet was attacked by Allied planes who proceeded to pound the Japanese into oblivion. “They make it sound like sport,” says Pete to Sylvia, “I'd be willing to take even odds that the story is 90% BS. I going to get some tea, you want anything?”

Sam is amazed that the gambling going on is nonstop and that in spite of the noise he's been able to sleep. He wonders how long it'll take to get to where they're going and if anyone will have any money left by then.

The Lucky 11 are airborne once more on a scheduled 9 hour training mission. They debate the reasoning behind the training flights that last so long. “I tell ya we can't be going to Europe, the distances aren't so great that we couldn't fly from London to Berlin and back in much less time than this.” When Gel speaks they all listen as he knows about lots of stuff. “I'll betcha we're going to go to the Pacific,” he says. Everyone is silent as they contemplate this. They've heard about the things that the Japanese have supposedly done to prisoners and this sends a chill through the stoutest of hearts.

Sandy looks out of the kitchen window as she cleans the breakfast dishes and thinks of how pretty the freshly fallen snow looks. Then her mind drifts to how can such a beautiful world be so chaotic?

Combat

Coastal Guns at Kai Island fired and scored a few hits on a tin can while inflicting heavy losses on the troops that are continuing to land. The SS Pompano tried to attack the Japanese transports, but got driven off by IJN DDs. The sub then made another attempt and was rewarded with a torpedo hit on an AK, setting it on fire and causing heavy damage. The escorts punished her for her efforts. And now she's limping towards Darwin. The IJN TF unloading at Kai Island was then attacked by 16 X Barracuda, 10 X Avenger II, 11 X Hellcat II and 8 Corsair IV. A lone Barracuda was damaged as the attacked managed to do the following:
DD Minegumo, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AK Teikin Maru, Torpedo hits 1
AK Boko Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
Then 15 X B-25J appeared and hit a DD and CA with a bomb each. 3 X B-24D attacked a CL, but missed. Later in the day 14 X Barracuda and 4 X Hellcat II attacked the Japanese ships, but missed. 10 torpedo planes were damaged in the attack. Then 13 x B-25J and 2 X P-38J attacked and a CA was hit by a bomb, causing a fire. A Mitchell was destroyed by the flak and 2 others were damaged. Another attack made up of 31 X B-25J, 14 X Kittyhawk III and 7 X P-40N came calling and they ravaged an AP with 11 bomb hits and another AP with 4 hits. Both ships were burning hulks in sinking condition after the attack. Many troops were reported to have been spotted jumping into the water. No planes were damaged. The Americans and Japanese on the island lobbed shells at one another with the Japanese taking the worst of it.

The SS Trigger, 79 miles S of Nagasaki, tried to attack a heavily escorted AK and got a pounding instead. She's fighting moderate systems damage and flooding, but is expected to make the long voyage back to Wake Island.

Mandalay was bombed by 69 X Liberator VI and the bombers inflicted heavy damage, reported a large secondary explosion and caused moderate casualties to the troops. No planes were damaged in the attack.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was attacked by 14 X Helen and had no losses, but the morale suffered some more as desertions continue to plague the Chinese.

The IJN TF 13 miles NE of Lautem was struck by 47 X B-24D and a huge BB thought to be Musashi was hit 4 times, causing a fire.

The Japanese attacked the RN 82 miles E of Aru Island with 53 X Judy, 17 X Jill and 14 X Zeke. A CAP of 15 X Hellcat II and 10 X Corsair IV challenged them. 28 Judy were destroyed, 10 X Jill were shot down and 3 X Zeke were flamed while a Hellcat II went down. Despite this the BC Repulse was hit by a bomb and the CV Victorious was struck by 2 bombs. A second attempt was made by the Japanese, this time with 34 X Judy, 12 X Jill and 13 X Zeke. The CAP of 14 Hellcat IIs and 10 Corsairs IVs slashed into them and 9 X Judy were shot down (15 damaged), 6 X Jill destroyed and 8 X Zeke were splashed at no cost to the British fighters. The CV Victorious was hit by a torpedo and was burning and the BC Repulse was hit by a bomb. Then a third wave appeared and the 30 X Jill and 18 X Zeke were jumped by 10 X Hellcat II and 5 X Corsair IV. 9 X Jill went down (12 damaged) and 11 X Zeke were destroyed at the cost of a Hellcat II shot down (1 damaged) and a Corsair IV splashed (1 damaged). The CV Victorious was hit by 2 torpedoes and the fires worsened while the damage was heavy. Suddenly the skies above the stricken RN TF was filled with 40 X Judy, 33 X Jill and 41 X Zeke. The CAP was down to a dozen Hellcat IIs and they engaged. 5 Judy went down (12 damaged), 9 Jill were destroyed (15 damaged) and 11 X Zeke were shot down while the CAP lost 7 fighters. The BC Repulse was struck by 5 bombs and a torpedo, the CV Indomitable was pounded by 4 bombs and 2 fish while the CA Shropshire absorbed a bomb. As things quieted down the Japanese LBA struck with 7 X Frances and 12 X Betty. The CAP of only 5 Hellcat IIs did their best and a Betty was destroyed (5 damaged), but the CV Victorious was hit by 2 more torpedoes and had a heavy list to starboard, was down by the bow and had fires raging. The word was passed to abandon ship and shortly after the last man was off the carrier slid beneath the waves.

Dave sits in the garage pondering the crazy world and is amazed that the United States has been at war for 2 years now. He wonders when the madness will all end.

In the Pentagon the Admirals and Generals, prodded by FDR, amend plans for attacks on Japan's defenses in the push to win the war. A meeting will be held when FDR returns and he expects big things and the various commands plan on giving them to him.

Bill watches a work party busily going about their task and he thinks that the bluejackets are sometimes better off than their officers as they seem to have plenty to do to keep them occupied. He takes a gulp of coffee and looks at his watch knowing that a drill will commence shortly.

Sam wonders when a soldier like him will get a breath of fresh air again. They are still not allowed on deck and the men are getting angrier all of the time. The food is fair, but the stench from body odor and human waste continues to get worse. One man says to an officer, “What are you going to do, send me to combat?”

Slim lounges around having managed to duck some details by saying, “Let the new guys do it.”

The Second Cairo Conference ended with Turkey maintaining it's neutrality. This was wanted by FDR , but Churchill was less than pleased.

Oww -- that puts the RN on the back foot for quite some time. Any idea where all those Jills and Judys came from?

The Japanese LBA appears to be based out of Timor, Amboina and any other airbase capable of handling 2E bombers within normal range.

Forgive me for the abbreviated installment today as I try to squeeze it in on an extremely busy day with thunder storms.

Combat

Coastal Guns at Kai Island dealt out a hit to an AP, and caused moderate casualties to the Japanese troops unloading. A Japanese assault saw them suffer very heavy losses while the American defenders had heavy casualties and grudgingly gave up little ground. A few burning Japanese vessels that were off shore were observed to sink during the day.

The SS Swordfish, 9 miles NW of Kai Island, tried an attack on 8 X DDs and failed. The DDs then returned the attack and rattled the sub violently. The sub wasn't to be dismissed so easily as she found an AP and quickly sent 3 torpedoes into it sending the ship to it's doom.

5 X CL and 3 X DD attacked the RN TF limping back to Darwin 75 miles NE of Aru Island. The British had 1 X CV, 1 X BC, 3 X CA, 1 X CL, 1 X CLAA and 7 X DD present. The exchange of gunfire witnessed all of the IJN ships hit except for 1 DD. They lost a DD and had another burning as was a CL. The Repulse took a hit, as did a CA and a DD was struck 3 times and was burning. Further along in their agonizingly slow voyage to safety, 87 miles E of Aru Island, the escorts attacked a lurking IJN sub and scored multiple hits. With sunrise came the Japanese planes. 15 X Betty and 5 X Frances attacked and a pair of P-38Js were the TF's only defense besides the AA fire that they threw in the paths of their tormentors. 3X Betty went down (9damaged) and 2 X Frances were splashed (another damaged) while both Lightnings were damaged as they flew fearlessly into the murderous flak trying to protect the ships. The BC Repulse was subjected to another torpedo hit and continues to burn with a worsening list. An hour later 26 X Betty roared in and the TF was on it's own as the LRCAP wasn't in a position to intercept. 3 X Betty were destroyed (20 damaged) and the Repulse was fed 4 more fish while the CV Indomitable ate 2 also. The Repulse will now be stricken from the RN lists as the waters around her burning carcass boiled as she was consumed.

Pagan was raided by 64 X B-25J and the base took light damage, had multiple secondary explosions and light casualties. All of the planes departed unscathed.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was hit by 22 X B-25J for moderate losses.

Faced with lurking subs and the knowledge that the CV Indomitable's current speed of 3 Knots, under tow, will leave her vulnerable to the inevitable air attacks tomorrow a tough call is made. Captain Eccles passes orders to abandon ship and sees to her scuttling. The CV was carrying very heavy damage and flooding and there were moderate fires blazing. The remaining ships of the TF will make for Darwin and it's air umbrella.

Churchill is fuming as the RN has taken horrible losses to it's fleet in the past couple of days. He never wanted to be involved in any operations near Australia, but the pressure put on FDR by PM Curtin and subsequently passed from Washington to London couldn't be ignored. Now Washington will send troops and more planes to aid in the CBI as a sort of compensation. If it hadn't been for the USN whittling down the IJN's number of CVs the protection of India from an amphibious attack would now be difficult at best.

The Japanese were clearly making a maximum effort. But it's interesting they couldn't come up with any CA's, which are much more potent than IJN CL's. (Unlike the Brooklyn or Cleveland class.)

As to why Steve used CLs and not CAs, your guess is as good as mine. The IJN is stretched out over a huge area and it's possible that he's holding back heavier units for when they're needed.

Coastal guns on Kai Island continue to roar their defiance as they inflicted heavy casualties on the troops landing and also struck a pair of DDs. The SS Jack slipped in and tried to attack an AK, but failed to hit it. 34 X Judy, 39 X Jill and 19 X Zero attacked and a lone P-38J was aloft and between the plane and AA fire 6 X Judy were damaged and a Jill went down. Light damage was done to the airfield, a Corsair IV was destroyed on the ground and the troops had light casualties. 29 X B-25J, 35 X B-24D, 27 X Kittyhawk III and 6 X P-40N then roared in and attacked the Japanese shipping. The Japanese had 23 X Zeke up and 2 were destroyed and 3 damaged as the Allied planes had 8 X Mitchell damaged, 5 X Liberator damaged, 13 X Kittyhawk III shot down (1 damaged) and 3 X Warhawk destroyed. A CA and a CL were each hit by a bomb and the CL caught fire. Then 15 X B-24D made an attack on the TF and was met by 19 X Zeke. 4 of the Zekes were damaged and 4 bombers were shot down (4 damaged). The same CA, thought to be the Atago, took 2 more bomb hits. The Japanese shipping was still being protected by 19 X Zeke when 17 X B-25J, 11 X Kittyhawk III, 3 X P-40N and 3 X P-38J arrived on the scene. 3 X Zeke were destroyed (2 damaged) as 3 of the bombers were damaged, 3 X Kittyhawk III went down (another damaged), a Warhawk was scratched (1 damaged) and a Lightning was shot up. An AP was hit by a bomb causing it to burn and troops to jump off of her. A Japanese bombardment attack caused very few casualties and the Allies responded inflicting extremely light losses on the Japanese.

The SS Rasher, 73 miles E of the Amami Group, failed to get in an attack on a juicy TK. The MSW and PC escorts then tried to attack the sub and they too failed.

Mandalay was bombed by 113 X Liberator VI and they had 10 X Spitfire VIII and 5 X P-38J as escorts. A lone bomber was damaged by AA as the base was pasted for heavy damage. There were many secondary explosions observed and the troops took heavy losses.

Myitkyina was attacked by 37 X B-24J, 7 of which were damaged by flak. The base had light damage, a couple of large secondary explosions were reported and the ground personnel had very light casualties.

The USN made an air attack on Japanese shipping near Marcus Island with 29 X SBD, 18 X TBM and 39 X Hellcat. 3 X Zero and 3 X Zeke challenged the attackers and all of the Zeros were downed. No American planes were damaged as they dished out the following:
AK Shogen Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AK Taga Maru, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
AK Isuzugawa Maru, Bomb hits 7, sinks
AK Taisei Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
AK Canton Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
A second strike consisting of 82 X SBD, 26 X SB2C, 43 X TBF, 16 X TBM and their escort of 36 X Hellcats was attacked by a Zero and 6 Zekes. The Zero and 5 of the Zekes were splashed and again the Americans had no damage as they struck the shipping.
AK Tsuneshima Maru, Bomb hits 8, on fire, heavy damage
AK Assam, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
AK Taga Maru, Bomb hits 4, sinks
AK Taisei Maru, Bomb hits 10, Torpedo hits 1, sinks
AK Shogen Maru, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, sinks
AK Canton Maru, Bomb hits 6, sinks

Kweiyang was swept by 7 X Zero, 8 X Zeke, 19 X George, 23 X Jack, 32 X Tony and a Dinah along for a look. The Chinese met them with 25 X P-40N who downed a George, damaged a Jack and killed 9 X Tony at a cost of 21 Warhawks lost.

Bill reads the reports that come in and nods knowing that the diversion of the fleet for this little side show has paid off. The Japanese have played an elusive game with the USN recently, but this will dent their plans, he thinks.

Ed listens to his staff and reminds them to keep things simple because, “Once the stuff hits the fan to much can and will go wrong.” He reminds them that to much bombardment is never enough and not enough gets men killed. He actually is starting to have doubts as to the real value his ships contribute as the Japanese seem to be digging ever deeper the closer they get to Japan.

Gil had a real scare today as first one engine quit and then another became balky on their way home. In terms of the old slang everything is Jake now that they are safely on the ground. Their airplane commander nursed the big bird home and the guys are starting to call him Jake.

“Did you hear that we've been slated to ship out soon?” asks the new guys. Slim just shakes his head because he tries to ignore the rumors. He knows that they can't just sit on their behinds the rest of the war though and that sooner or later they'll be back in the thick of things.

Sam is relieved to hear that they'll be getting off of the ship tomorrow. Except for combat this has to be the worst, he thinks. All noncoms have been summoned by the company CO for later today and Sam wonders what it's all about.

Sandy writes to Bill telling him how cold, but beautiful everything looks with the fresh snowfall. She stops and wonders if he's OK and it hits her that it's possible that she's writing to him and he'll never see it. She tells herself to stop thinking like that because if something bad does happen it'll be her fault for thinking it.

The Council of Freedom has been established in Denmark and was announced in Britain.

Kai Island's guns still fire defiantly, inflicting heavy losses on the troops that continue to land and hit a DD 3 times. A naval bombardment by a couple of BBs, a CL and 2 DDs did light damage to the base, caused heavy casualties and destroyed a P-38J. Another naval bombardment by 2 BBs and a CL did further light damage and caused additional moderate losses to the troops. The 503rd USA Para Regiment was bombed by 32 X Judy (3 damaged), 37 X Jill (1 damaged) and 10 X Zero. Casualties were light. The IJN TF was attacked by 27 X B-25J, 34 X B-24D, 13 X Kittyhawk III, 4 X P-40N and 8 X P-38J. 2 of the Mitchells were damaged and the toll on the Japanese was as follows:
AP Ryoyo Maru, Bomb hits 6, on fire, heavy damage
AP Midori Maru, Bomb hits 3, on fire
AP Nichiran Maru, Bomb hits 4, on fire
Troops were reported diving into the oil soaked waters from the burning ships. Then 25 X B-25J, 27 X B-24D, 12 X Kittyhawk III, 4 X P-40N and 8 X P-38J came calling later in the day. A B-25J was damaged and the bombers caused their mayhem:
DD Tachikaze, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
DD Hagikaze, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AP Ryoyo Maru, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
AP Midori Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
A Japanese attack overwhelmed the defenders and the base fell. 2 P-38Js and a Avenger II were destroyed before airfield fell. Japanese losses were light and the Allied forces lost very heavily. The survivors of the fight, not lucky enough to be airlifted out surrendered.

The SS Swordfish, 86 miles SW of Bulla, spotted and attacked 2 AKs escorted by a couple of tin cans. She scored a hit with a fish on 1 of the AKs and saw fires erupt before she dove deep.

The SS Grunion, 79 miles W of Truk, was stalking an AK and 3 APs when the escort of 3 MSWs ineffectively attacked her. Grunion now must start the hunt all over again if she is to attack her intended victims. She was rewarded with being driven off again later in the day.

Koepang was under a defensive umbrella of 3 X Zeke, 13 X George, 3 X Jack, 3 X Tojo and 9 X Tony when 48 X B-24D and 30 X B-24J arrived overhead. Between the defensive fire of the bombers and the bombs the following were destroyed: 9 X Zeke , 6 X George (2 damaged), 3 X Jack damaged, 3 X Tojo damaged, 3 X Tony (4 damaged), 4 X Betty, 3 X Helen, 2 X Sally, 2 X Ida and a Dinah. 8 bombers went down and 19 others were damaged. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were many secondary explosions and troops took light losses.

A Japanese ship 84 miles N of Marcus Island was attacked by 29 X SBD, 18 X TBM and 66 F6F. The AK was struck repeatedly and was listing heavily and on fire before she finally went under.

Pete reads of heavy fighting in the islands around Timor and Darwin. He wonders how much of what he reads is true and what he can believe. Setting aside the newspaper he gets ready to go to the doctor with Sylvia for a checkup.

Bill never thought that he'd see the day where being part of a fleet looking for trouble and then being in action would leave virtually nothing for the surface combatants to do. The brass won't cut loose any of the ships to attack shipping so the pilots do all of the work. It is surely a war for the brown shoes.

The Allied troops continue their undetected advance into Burma. Soon they will make their presence felt and the Japanese will be forced to give battle.

FDR listens to the final invasion plans for the Marianas and nods his approval. He then asks what comes next and many options are presented, each having been worked out in great detail. The logistics are running smoothly, which is an amazement since the distances are so great. Roosevelt reminds an aide that when they arrive in Washington a full staff meeting should be called.

The British 8th Army crossed the Moro today.

Combat

The SS S-34, 12 miles S of Amboina, stumbled upon an unescorted AK and hit the ship with a shell from the deck gun and a fish. The vessel was burning as the sub moved off.

The SS Hake, 69 miles E of Butuan, was jumped by 6 X PG and a PC, but the sub merely dove under the depth charges.

Mandalay was raided by 111X Liberator VI, 7 X Spitfire VIII and 13 P-38J. A solitary Liberator was damaged by flak as the base was subjected to extremely heavy damage, multiple secondary explosions and heavy losses to the troops.

Koepang was attacked by 92 X B-24D and the bombers were greeted by 3 X Zeke, 14 X George, 2 X Jack, 2 X Tojo and 6 X Tony. Between the fighters and the AA fire 15 bombers were destroyed and another 20 were damaged. The Japanese losses between the air and ground was the following:
A6M5 Zeke: 2 destroyed
N1K1-J George: 4 destroyed, 5 damaged
J2M Jack: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 1 damaged
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged
G4M2 Betty: 6 destroyed
Ki-49 Helen: 2 destroyed
Ki-36 Ida: 2 destroyed
G4M1 Betty: 2 destroyed
The airfield took moderate damage, many secondary explosions were reported and light casualties to the ground personnel.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was attacked by 18 X B-25J and 18 X P-40N. The Japanese unit had light losses and all of the Chinese planes left the scene intact.

An air attack on TF near Kai Island was undertaken by 8 X B-25J, 15 X Kittyhawk III, 9 X P-40N and 10 X P-38J. The CAP of 9 X Zeke, 9 X George and 12 X Tony engaged and saw 3 X Zeke go down, 2 X George destroyed (another damaged) and 4 X Tony shot down. The Allied aircraft lost a Mitchell (1 damaged), 3 X Kittyhawk III downed (2 damaged), 3 X Warhawk destroyed and a Lightning was damaged. No ships were hit. Another raid followed almost immediately consisting of 8 X B-24D and 2 X P-38J. 6 X Zeke, 7 X George and 8 X Tony intercepted and damaged a bomber. Again no ships were hit. Then 18 X B-24D appeared a short time later and 8 X Zeke, 6 X George and 9 X Tony attacked them. 2 Liberators were shot down and 4 others were damaged as 2 X Zeke were damaged and so was a George. An AK was hit by a bomb was caught fire.

The doctor gave Pete a clean bill of health and then he waited for Sylvia to join him as she saw a different doctor. She misses working at the hospital, but Pete finally prevailed in his insistence that she stop due to the pregnancy.

Stick spent the morning on alert and then took off for a stint of CAP duty in the afternoon. It wasn't so boring today as the radar on Eniwetok was directing the CAP towards targets. This kind of drill can do wonders when the real thing rolls around. After the flight Stick heads off to his tent for a short rest before chow. One thing he misses from Wake was the occasional shower that he hasn't managed to take here yet.

Gil spent the afternoon sitting around chewing the fat with some other radio operators. They talk about their equipment and one of them mentions a problem he had with a radio. When asked how he managed to fix the problem he replied, “I used the Italian wrench on it.” When asked to explain he illustrated by hammering one hand into the other and everybody shared the laugh.

The amount of men and material staged for the Marianas attack continues to grow and the planners now await word from the USN after they conduct the carrier raid on the islands to get a picture of what they'll face. It's expected that Saipan will be heavily fortified and have lots of troops while the other islands will be manned by fewer troops.

Red and Cookie have Lucky ashore for a walk. They talk about the land that they bought and wonder when, if ever, they'll see Honolulu again. “At this rate the war might never end,” says Red.

The USAAF bombed Emden today.

The DDs Pringle and Sigsbee encountered a mine field at Eniwetok.

The SS Drum, 17 miles S of Bulla, was attacked by 6 DDs, but she managed to evade them before any damage was done.

The SS Sailfish, 73 miles W of Kai Island, reported a heavily damaged AP. The report failed to mention if the sub inflicted the damage or was encountered in that condition.

Kweiyang was attacked by 80 X Helen, 11 X George, 8 X Tojo, 32 X Tony and 5 X Dinah. The base took moderate damage, some supply hits and moderately light casualties. The Chinese had pulled their planes out so only inaccurate AA fire was offered as a defense. No Japanese planes were harmed.

Mandalay was bombed by 114 X Liberator VI, 7 Spitfire VIII and 13 X P-38J. A bomber was lost to flak while another suffered damage. The base was heavily damaged, there were numerous secondary explosions and casualties were heavy.

Andaman Island was raided by 31 X B-24J, 10 of which were damaged by the AA fire. The airfield took light damage.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was struck by 25 X B-25J and 5 X P-40N for heavy losses.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was attacked by 10 X Helen and all of the bombs missed. This gave the demoralized and hungry Chinese troops something to cheer about.

The SS Seawolf, 75 miles S Amboina, decided to turn the tables on her hunters and hit a DD with 2 torpedoes. With her keel broken it didn't take long for her victim to die.

The SS Wahoo limped into the harbor at Noumea and immediately work crews swarmed over her.

The Flying Deuces are busy because an attack could happen at any time, especially with an unloading convoy presenting itself as a juicy target. Stick flew a morning CAP mission and then another in the late afternoon, landing in twilight. He's talking to another pilot about the increased flying tempo and still not getting a sniff of the Japanese.

Ships are gathering at Wake Island in preparation of the Marianas attack.

The Allied troops are slowly advancing in Burma and to their knowledge are still undetected. The Japanese are in for a nasty surprise and maybe will be caught with their pants down.

Elaine got 3 letters today and had to put off reading them as she accompanied her friend to the train station. The girl has enlisted as an Army nurse. Elaine can't understand it as she knows that her friend can't stand the sight of blood. That evening she reads the letters and writes back to Gil complaining about all the things that are in shortage because of the war.

Gunny walks alongside Slim as the battalion marches of to get some more range time. They talk and he tells Slim that he recommended him for a promotion to sergeant. “Why? I don't want or need the responsibility of taking care of other guys,” Slim replies. Gunny just tells him that he happens to think that Slim is a natural and that's that. They walk along in silence until Slim asks Gunny for a butt.

The Czech-Soviet treaty of friendship was signed today in Moscow.

Pagan was targeted by 54 X B-25J, 8 X Spitfire VIII and 7 X Thunderbolt II. There was no opposition in the air, the AA fire was very light and wildly inaccurate and no planes were damaged. The base was tagged for light damage and some secondary explosions were reported.

Lunga was swept by 24 P-38J and 38 X Zeke, 27 X Jack and 6 X Tony rolled out the welcome mat. 4 Zekes went down (1 damaged) and 2 Jacks were destroyed while the Americans lost 8 Lightnings and had another damaged. The squadron is on the green side and these are nuisance raids to tie down Japanese forces.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was raided by 24 X B-25J and 4 X P-40N. All of the planes took care of business causing light losses and having none of their own.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 14 X Helen and the Chinese had light losses.

Japanese ships near Kai Island were attacked by 8 X B-24D and 2 X P-38J. The CAP of 9 X Zeke, 6 X George and 10 X Tony gave no offering of resistance, but the flak downed 2 bombers and damaged another as their bombs fell harmlessly into the sea. Another raid made up of 18 X B-25J, 18 X B-24D, 10 X Kittyhawk III, 7 X P-40N and 15 X P-38J then appeared. The Japanese planes offered battle and had 3 Zekes get shot down, 2 Georges were destroyed and 2 Tonys met their demise. 2 Mitchells were damaged, 2 Kittyhawk IIIs were splashed, and 2 Warhawks went down. A DD was struck by a bomb for heavy damage and was burning while an AP was smashed by 7 bombs. Another attack by 21 X B-25J, 12 X B-24D, 10 X Kittyhawk III, 5 X P-40N and 14 X P-38J came calling and 9 X Zeke, 5 X George and 4 X Tony attacked. A Zeke was destroyed (2 damaged) and a George went down while a B-25J was damaged, 2 Kittyhawk IIIs were shot down and 4 Lightnings were killed (2 damaged). No bombs found the mark.

The Lucky 11 had a training mission scrubbed due to rotten weather. Now the crewmen drift off to find various things to occupy their time. One of them remarks that New Mexico must be an awful place to live, “Just look around you and what do you see?”

A heavy rain hits Eniwetok and pilots of the Flying Deuces appear outside of their tents with a bar of soap in hand. They hurriedly lather up and hope to be finished before the cloudburst stops. Some succeed and others still have soap on them. Stick is one of the mean left soapy and he sighs to himself thinking that at least he's cleaner than before.

Back in their area Slim considers the poor performance of some of the new men. They need more practice and today he sees that they can change barrels on the machine guns faster than they did on the range. “Until you guys get it through your thick skulls that seconds make the difference between life and death you'll keep at it. Once you make me happy you can proceed to working with the Garand. Gunny smiles to himself as he passes the group of Marines without being noticed.

Sandy knows that she shouldn't be concerned, but it's been days since a letter arrived from Bill. Dave says that the news told of an easy victory in the taking of an island named Eniwetok. “If it was easy then the Navy shouldn't have lost any ships so I'm sure he's OK.” She smiles at her father, knowing that he's trying to cheer her up. Normally she'd go for a hike, but being winter and all of the snow on the ground that's out, especially after what happened to her before.

Combat

The SS KXVIII, at Lautem , laid her mines when suddenly she suffered a mine hit. Flooding is heavy, but the systems damage is light so it is hoped that she can make it to Darwin.

The SS Seawolf, 16 miles NW of Amboina, spotted 2 MLs and hit 1 of them with a torpedo causing fires and heavy damage.

Mandalay was bombed by 117 X Liberator VI, 7 X Spitfire VIII and 20 X P-38J. No planes were damaged as they administered very heavy damage to the base. Some secondary explosions were seen and there were heavy casualties to the troops.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was struck by 18 X B-25J and 5 X P-40N. The units sustained moderate casualties and still stubbornly holds it's exposed position.

The Hopei Militia Division, was raided by 10 X Helen and had light losses.

The RN TF 12 miles from Wyndham was attacked by 17 X Betty and the LRCAP of 8 X Kittyhawk III and 6 X P-38J tore into the unescorted bombers downing 9 of them and damaging another 3 at the cost of a damaged Kittyhawk III. All of the torpedoes launched by the Japanese failed to find the mark.

A sheet of paper is handed to FDR and he sees:
Ship losses to date, all types: Japanese 306 Allied 199
Aircraft losses to date, all types: Japanese 9516 Allied 7950

Major Smith finally arrives at his destination and grabs some hot chow before being taken to the area his division will be assigned to. All he wants to do is stretch and then grab some shut eye.

Our old friend CDR Sheetz and his ship, the AS Fulton, are busily handling the subs that seem to be flocking to Darwin. “At least there's plenty of supplies,” one of the blue shirts says as they work on a balky bilge pump on a Dutch sub.

Sam is glad to have his feet on the ground again. He's growing to hate every voyage with increasing intensity. He's summoned to the company CO's tent and once there is presented with stripes. It's official that he's now a squad leader. Lucky me, he thinks, knowing that he's got added responsibilities and that the Japanese tend to look for leaders to target.

The rest of the assault troops are boarding ships to leave Eniwetok as other ships unload the men who are the island's garrison.

Bill has a message on his desk that mentions that the Helena is scheduled for a refit in April of 1944. He wonders if the schedule will be adhered to and if the work will be done Stateside. If it is then he'll be able to see Sandy. He writes her a letter and wishes that he could tell her that he'll see her soon. There's to many ifs involved and of course it would never pass the censors.

Gil watches as the dummy bombs are loaded onto the plane that the Lucky 11 will be using for today's training flight. He heads off to the briefing room where he joins the rest of the crew. The flight will be a short one and they will be “attacked” by defending fighters in the target area. This'll be interesting, he thinks to himself. The gunners look at one another with smiles on their faces.

On the O'Bannon one of the newer members of the crew is studying the Navy's silhouette chart for ship recognition.

German strength on the Eastern Front is 2,086,000 and 188,000 allied troops. German casualties for 1943 were put at 900,000.

Combat

The SS Triton, 11 miles E of Kagoshima, tried to attack a heavily escorted TK, but the escorts detected and attacked her first. Though the crew was shaken up the sub is fine and they continue their patrol.

The SS S-27, 15 miles E of Kendari, torpedoed a ML which was virtually vaporized by the explosion.

Mandalay was bombed by 105 X Liberator VI, 8 Spitfire VIII and 19 X P-38J. 2 bombers were damaged by the AA fire as the base was heavily damaged, some secondary explosions were seen and the troops had moderate losses.

Koepang was under an umbrella of 4 X Zeke, 11 X George, 3 X Jack, 10 X Irving, 3 X Tojo and 7 X Tony when a raid of 33 X B-24D and 24 X B-24J arrived. The Japanese pilots aggressively attacked the bombers and between the air to air combat and the bombs a pair of Zekes were splashed (1 damaged), 3 X George were shot down (6 damaged), a Jack blew up (another damaged), 8 X Irving were damaged, a Tojo was shot down and another was damaged, a Tony was flamed (4 damaged), 2 Sallys, a pair of Bettys and a Helen were also destroyed. 5 X B-24D were downed (23 damaged) and 8 X B-24J were killed (8 damaged). The airfield took light damage, there was a very large secondary explosion and troops had light casualties. Another attack was made by 38 X B-24D and a reduced CAP of 2 X Zeke, 7 X George, a Jack, 5 X Irving, 3 X Tojo and 5 X Tony met them. 5 Liberators were shot down and 18 others were damaged as the Japanese suffered both in the air and on the ground. 3 Zekes were destroyed, 6 Georges are no more, a Jack was trashed, 5 Irvings were damaged, a Tojo exploded in mid air, 3 Tonys were downed, 4 Bettys, a Sally and 3 Helens were also destroyed. The base was moderately damaged, numerous secondary explosions were observed and ground personnel sustained moderate losses.

Jaluit was hit by 29 X B-25J and 46 X P-38G as the port took light damage and the flak wounded 3 bombers.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was once more attacked by 21 X B-25J and 6 X P-40N. No planes were damaged and the troops had moderate casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 10 Helens and the unit had light losses. The soldiers that remain refuse to move unless they desert.

“Training tempo will be increased and once the shipping is available we'll be leaving this Garden of Eden. Our destination will be revealed when the brass deems we need to know.” With that Gunny asks who's up for some calisthenics and a moan goes up among the men.

Gil loves flying and his favorite spot is the Bombardier's position in the nose of the plane. Yesterday's flight earned them a fair rating and they can expect plenty more practice bombing runs in the near future. For today's flight they took off in the dark and now are proceeding to their destination, will fly some various course headings and then return to base. Gil marvels at the night sky and he is awed by the view of the stars. He composes a letter to Elaine in his head and when they return to base he'll put it to paper.

Major Smith is complaining about the lack of space being allotted for the 1st Marine Division, to no avail. “Every one has the same gripe Major so save your breath as it'll do no good,” he's told by a staff officer at CENPAC HQs.

The crewman on the O'Bannon is taking the recognition charts very seriously as he continues to study the silhouettes. This has been brought to Phil's attention and he tells Frank to keep an eye on the man's progress. “We could always use another set of eyes,” he says and Frank agrees.

Great Britain, the USA and the USSR all broke off diplomatic relations with the Yugoslav government in exile and recognized Tito as the government to be.

Combat

A pair of IJN DDs encountered a mine field at Palembang.

The SS Rasher, 66 miles SE of Okinawa, slammed an AK with 2 fish and then suffered through an extended attack by the escorts.

The SS Jack, 14 miles SE of Kendari, was ineffectively attacked by 4 destroyers. The sub then located 6 APDs and managed to torpedo 1 of them, sinking it. Another attack later in the day rattled the sub some more.

The SS O20 was near Kai Island to lay mines when she spotted a ML and tried to get an attack in on it, but failed.

The skies above Lunga were busy as 20 X P-38J came in on a sweep and met 52 X Zeke, 11 X George, 52 X Jack and 8 X Tony. It was a lopsided contest that saw 9 Zekes flamed, 4 Jacks shot down (2 damaged) and 12 X P-38J downed. Then 31 X B-24J appeared and 43 X Zeke, 11 X George, 48 X Jack and 8 X Tony pounced on them. A Zeke was shot down (10 damaged), 2 Georges were shot up, 2 Jacks were destroyed (10 damaged) and 4 Tonys were damaged while 16 bombers went down. No bombs fell on target.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was hit for moderate losses by 23 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N.

Elaine is bored and upset at not getting a letter today. She wonders where Gil is and if she'll get to see him again.

Pete tells Sylvia that he's been asked to teach a navigation course and tells her that it'll only take a few hours out of each day from 2 to 5 PM. She's not happy, but knows that he wants to do something to help the war effort so she agrees. “But, remember this is classroom only. I don't want you flying about. Remember what has happened to you in the past. You're married now and soon you'll be a father so classrooms and that's it.” He agrees and will tell Mr. Doe when he sees him .

Red is dozing in the radio shack as the Palawan heads to her new destination. She's part of a large convoy bound for some island in the Central Pacific. Lucky is lying on the deck below Red's outstretched legs. Cookie stops by and decides not to bother Red, though Lucky is immediately on his feet, tail wagging. Boredom is better than excitement, he thinks.

Gil and the Lucky 11 are in a classroom. They are pooped from the flight, but the schedule doesn't bend. After the morning debriefing and class they head off to grab some chow. Gil promises himself a shower and time to write to Elaine before he sacks out.

Sam struck out today at mail call though one of the guys in the squad got a package from home. It contained a stale, crumbling cake. Another of the guys tells the recipient to write home telling his mother to use popcorn to surround the next cake. This will serve a dual purpose of being a cushion and also it'll absorb moisture. “Good idea,” says Sam, “now can you figure out how we can win this war and survive?”

Berlin has been hit with 18,500 tons of bombs to date.

Combat

Kunming was hammered for heavy damage when 123 X Helen, 8 X Tojo, 36 X Tony and 5 X Dinah came calling. The Chinese intercepted the attack with a mere 7 X P-40N. 2 Helens went down (5 damaged) and 3 Tonys were destroyed while the Chinese lost 5 Warhawks and 4 Mitchells between the air and the ground. The troops sustained light losses, but the supplies went up like a roman candle.

Mandalay was bombed by 112 Liberator VIs along with their escort of 9 Spitfire VIIIs, 10 Thunderbolt IIs and 25 P-38Js. A bomber was damaged by the flak as they unloaded on the base which was very heavily damaged. Casualties were placed at very heavy and there were many secondary explosions.

Myitkyina was attacked by 18 X B-24J and 4 were damaged by the AA fire. Damage to the base was light as were the casualties, but numerous secondary explosions were reported.

Lautem was raided by 63 X B-25J, 45 X B-24D, 93 X B-24J, 32 X Kittyhawk III, 14 X P-40N and 22 P-38J. The Japanese threw 22 X Zeke and 36 X Jack at the Allied planes. It was a very bloody affair between the air to air combat, the heavy AA fire and the falling bombs. Japanese losses were reported at: 20 X Zeke shot down, 7 X Jack splashed (13 damaged), 8 X Betty destroyed, an Emily burning and a Dinah trashed. Allied losses were 3 X Mitchell (13 damaged), a B-24D (11 damaged), 2 X B-24J (19 damaged), 22 Kittyhawk III, 3 X P-40N and 5 X P-38J (3 damaged). The base took heavy damage, had lots of secondary explosions and heavy losses to the ground personnel.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF stubbornly holds it's position at the river crossing and 20 B-25Js along with 10 X P-40Ns made the unit pay with moderate casualties.

The 8th AF Construction Battalion, near Mandalay, was attacked by 56 X B-25J and 7 X Spitfire VIII. Casualties were very heavy and no planes were damaged.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 10 X Helen for light losses.

Combat

The SS Grouper, 74 miles E of Kagoshima, was attacked by 3 PGs and 2 PCs who failed to deter her from executing an attack on a nearby AK. The sub placed 2 torpedoes into the victim and silently moved off.

An AK ran into a mine field at Palembang, struck 1 and reportedly went under as a result.

The SS Jack, 131 miles SE of Macassar, spotted 2 MLs, but failed to get into a position to attack them.

The SS Drum, 87 miles E of Tarakan, hit a lightly escorted TK with 2 fish and then resumed her patrol.

Mandalay got another dose of bombs delivered by 123 X Liberator VI and their escort of 6 X Spitfire VIII, 10 X Thunderbolt II and 19 X P-38J. A bomber was damaged by light, sporadic and inaccurate AA fire as the base absorbed heavy damage, multiple secondary explosions and heavy casualties. The 20th Road Construction Battalion was then hit by 62 X B-25J (1 damaged) for light casualties.

Myitkyina was struck by 34 X B-24J, 9 of which were damaged, and sustained light damage, though some secondary explosions were reported and the losses to the troops were placed at light.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was visited by 10 X Helen and the unit suffered very light losses though the morale continues to sink ever lower as food and supplies are gone. The Chinese troops in this area are cut off and starving, unable to move and are withering on the vine as desertions will eventually leave them with nothing.

The SS S-27, 13 miles SE of Kendari, moved in on an AK being escorted by 2 tin cans and hit the target with a torpedo. The sub then melted away without ever being detected.

The SS Trigger departed Wake Island, bound for extensive repairs back in the USA.

The Commonwealth troops continue their advance into Burma. So far it is believed that they are undetected and once they get off the trails and hit the road Mytikyina will be cut off and hopefully Mandalay will fall. From there it's anybody's guess as to what will happen and it's all based on the Japanese response. Total and uncontested air supremacy in the region has enabled this operation.

A pitched battle between resistance fighters and the Germans was fought at Bernex, France.

With the USN's nosing around the Marianas the brass now has an idea of the Japanese strength there and all is a go.

Dave notes that LT Little has been listed as KIA and Dave remarks that he won't be adding to his tally of 25 kills any more. Sandy snaps and yells, “You act like it's the box score of a ball game. He was a person, not a statistics.

Elaine shows her sister a letter from Gil. “You'd think that he'd be more romantic. All he talks about in this one is what a great bunch of guys he's with and how much he loves flying.”

Pete has been asked if the navigation class would be OK for him on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-4PM. He considers this and consults with Sylvia, who says, “Do you want to do this? Does it fit OK with your schedule? Will you remember your promise to me and keep it just on the ground, here in Brisbane?” He nods and tells her that he'll give his answer tomorrow and that she can count on him not to go running around.

The Allies announced that Tito is to be the Allied commander in Yugoslavia. He now has a force of 250K.

The SS Triton was attacked by 3 DDs about 73 miles from Tokyo, but easily evaded them.

The SS Jack, 69 miles SW of Kendari, found a lone AK and torpedoed it.

Mandalay was bombed by 116 X Liberator VI, 9 X Spitfire VIII, 7 X Thunderbolt II and 26 X P-38J. No planes were damaged and their bombs did very heavy damage to the base, multiple secondary explosions were claimed and troops took heavy losses.

The 20th Road Construction Battalion, near Mandalay, was hit by 42 X B-25J (1 damaged). All of the bombs managed to fall harmlessly.

The Hopei Militia Division was attacked by 14 Helens, but their bombs on kicked up dirt and rocks as they fell off target.

Saipan was raided by 106 SBDs, 38 TBFs, 32 TBMs and 13 Hellcats. AA fire accounted for a Dauntless being shot down (15 damaged, a TBF destroyed (7 damaged) and 2 TBMs went down (6 damaged). The airfield sustained moderate damage, a Dinah was destroyed, the port had light damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and troops had heavy casualties.

Tinian was visited by 20 X SBD, 29 X SB2C, 23 X TBF, 16 X TBM and 14 X F4F-4. Flak damaged 3 SBD and 3 TBFs as the airfield had light damage, the port also had light damage, a few secondary explosions were claimed and troops had very light losses.

The news from the Pacific seems to all be positive and Dave wonders about the validity of this. He has a deep seeded mistrust of government and knows that it is exercising control over the newspapers and radio.

Red and Cookie wonder if they can get a message to their lawyer in Honolulu and decide that they'd better get the OK from the skipper. Captain Demesa listens to them and tells Red to send the message through the company's office and that they'll pass it on for them. He then says, “You know that this'll cost you? Some day when you own a Hawaiian hotel I might come knocking asking for a room.” Red and Cookie look at him and both say, “Sir, you will always be welcome on the arm.”

Gil managed to sleep through another training flight that lasted 9 ˝ hours. Everybody in the Lucky 11 is tired except for him. He takes lots of teasing about how good he has it, but everyone knows that he's a vital part of the crew. Before he conked out he managed to write a letter to Elaine. He hasn't gotten any mail for a few days now and he's concerned.

Gunny informs Slim that the word is shipping will be available to carry the 2nd Marine Division so they'll bee at sea sometime soon. “Have all of your men check and recheck their 782 gear. I want everything squared away as of yesterday and as of right now all liberty is canceled. I don't want to hear about any of the lads going over the hill either. The skipper also tells me that you are no longer a lowly corporal, sergeant. Congratulations, here's your stripes. Who will take over for you as your gunner? See to it that your section is manned as you see fit and report back to me at 2000 hours for a warm beer or three.”

Port Moresby was raided by 96 X B-17E, which were met by 9 Tojos and 9 Tonys. Though they gallantly attacked the big American bombers, flying through their own flak, the attackers dumped their bombs on the airfield and caused moderate damage, some secondary explosions and moderate casualties to the ground personnel. Between the air to air combat and the bombs the Japanese lost 6 Tojos, 4 Tonys (1 damaged), a Dinah, 6 Bettys and 2 Zeros. 14 B-17Es were destroyed and 46 were damaged.

In the Mandalay area, the 20th Road Construction Battalion was tagged by 42 X B-25J and 7 X Spitfire VIII for light losses while 2 Mitchells were damaged.

The Hopei Militia Division was hit by 10 X Helen, but both sides had no losses.

The SS Sailfish, 19 miles E of Kendari, was forced to dive as her radar detected 5 X DD heading her way. They never located the sub.

So the squad's realignment was done quickly and a new man is now an ammo carrier. Slim met Gunny at the appointed time and they proceeded to down some beers and shoot the breeze. Talk turned to those that they lost in action and the session became melancholy until Gunny started to talk about the funny things that happened. Both of them don't talk about what they know will be next for them as there's no reason to since they know that it'll get tougher and tougher as the war progresses.

Stick was scratched from flying today because he has managed to contract an intestinal virus. “If you don't get better fast you'll be looking like a skinny stick soon,” one of the men jokes as Stick races off once more. Pete will be told when his class schedule starts within a few days. In the meantime he and Sylvia are busy planning the Christmas party at the Hotel and John Doe is once more providing things that would cost a fortune on the black market, if you could find them. Her mother and father will help tonight, Christmas Eve with the decorations meaning that Milt will have designs on the pub's stock of beer and whiskey.

Sandy is depressed because she'll be missing Bill for Christmas and New Year. “Holidays are supposed to be spent with loved ones,” she says and Dave agrees with her as he kisses her forehead and gives her a big hug. “I know, I miss your mom,” he whispers to her.

Mandalay was bombed by 122 Liberator VIs, 9 Spitfire VIIIs and 29 P-38Js. The AA fire was light and inaccurate and a lone bomber was damaged. The base absorbed very heavy damage, several large secondary explosions were reported and troops had heavy losses.

Dili was raided by 48 X B-24D and 32 X B-24J and 2 of the former and 5 of the later types were damaged by flak as there was no fighter opposition aloft. The airfield took heavy damage, numerous secondary explosions occurred, ground personnel sustained very heavy casualties and 4 Bettys were left burning.

The Hopei Militia Division was jumped by 10 Helens and once more both sides had no losses.

The SS Sailfish, 27 E of Kendari, was forced to dive as 5 DDs came calling. The Japanese never pinned her location down and the sub silently glided away unharmed.

Luckily for Stick he recovered in time and he enjoyed the holiday meal fed to the Flying Deuces. “now if I'm really lucky I'll be declared fit for flying,” he jokes.

“I hear that a USO show was held in Noumea,” says Slim. There is some talk and they decide that Luganville is to far forward for some entertainers to venture. They do agree that seeing some starlets in person would be more than welcome though.

A holiday meal was wolfed down by Gil and then all of the Lucky 11 get together to share some whiskey that somehow managed to find it's way onto the base. They aren't scheduled to fly for a couple of days and tomorrow being a holiday weekend there will be no training of any sort, just some details to avoid. Gil finds himself getting dizzy in no time as he never had much to drink before entering the military. “Somebody is going to be hung over tomorrow,” says Willy as he stumbles forward reaching for the bottle. The men share a laugh and tell him that it looks like Gil will have plenty of company.

Sandy and Dave have a quiet meal and she thanks him for being such a good father. She hands him a gift that when opened brings a huge smile to his face. “Coffee! Where the hell and how did you manage to get so much?” She smiles and says it's a secret.

Pete and Sylvia retire after a long and festive time. They really enjoyed their party and Pete tells her that her idea of hiring disabled soldiers has worked out wonderfully for everyone. “Did I ever tell you that I love you Mrs. Myers?” he says as he gives her a kiss and gentle hug.

FDR sits in his wheel chair rubbing his temples and tells the steward to go home to his family. “Thank you for all you do,” he says, “Now share the holiday with your family.” The man replies that his wife cooks in the kitchen here at the White House and his 2 sons are overseas. The man says that he is with his family and FDR shakes the man's hand and says, “Merry Christmas to you. Would you care to invite your wife here to share a quiet taste of some branch water?” The man smiles and promises to return shortly. FDR is tired and lonely. He's always surrounded by people, but is lonely and the weight of his responsibilities are taking their toll on him.

The DDs Tjerk Hiddes and Banckert detected and attacked a Japanese sub near Kai Island, claiming many hits. The DD Evertsen, hit a mine, which caused fire and heavy damage to her. The Dutch TF, made up of 2 CLs and 6 DDs then ran into 2 MLs and between gunfire and a torpedo into each of them the IJN had 2 less MLs. No damage was sustained by the Dutch. They then found another ML and the Dutch guns dispatched it to the deep. Again not a scratch to the Dutch ships. Still not done they attacked an AP that was blown to smithereens by many shell hits. Finding no other targets the Dutch then departed, flushed with victory.

The SS Drum, 13 miles NE of Balikpapan, found a TK escorted by a PC and an MSE, but failed to achieve a position with which to launch an attack.

With Christmas in the rearview mirror the men consider 1944 and wonder what it'll bring besides warfare. They want the war to end so they can go home and sitting on their rear ends at Luganville isn't going to get it done. Gunny tries to tell them that their turn at bat will come and that they'll miss Luganville then.

Stick is back to flying CAP again and he's getting pretty good with how far he can lean the mixture to extend his range in the Corsair. His crew chief told him to cut it out because the engine won't last running it like that. Stick apologizes and promises to behave.

Sandy and Dave went into town and she stopped by the Post Office to find a couple of letters from Bill there for her. She posts some to him and then goes looking for her father.

Bill was very pleased with the Christmas festivities aboard Helena and now everyone is back to work.

Pete and Sylvia join their employees cleaning up from yesterday's party. It was lots of fun and the food was outstanding. Pete gets a phone call and now he knows about the classes he's to be giving.

Gil and the Lucky 11 are scheduled to fly on the 28th and until then they've got some other duties thrown at them.

The Scharnhorst was sunk and only 36 out of a crew of 1,839 survived.

Combat

The SS Jack, 14 miles N Lautem, was driven under by a radar contact that never knew she was there.

The SS Grouper, 87 miles E of Okinawa, was attacked by a pair of PGs and a PC. The attack was short and very violent.

Tavoy was swept by 12 P-38Js, but after a while they headed home as no Japanese planes were aloft.

Mandalay was pounded by 116 X Liberator VI and the escort of 7 Spitfire VIIIs and 23 P-38Js. The flak damaged 2 bombers as the base was very heavily damaged, there were a few secondary explosions and casualties were heavy.

Myitkyina was attacked by 31 X B-24J, of which 3 were damaged by the ground fire. The base was lightly damaged, though there were many secondary explosions noted and the troops took light losses.

The Hopei Militia Division was raided by 9 Helens and both sides again escaped any losses.

Troops are boarding vessels that will carry them to the Marianas for the invasion of Guam and then Tinian.

The Palawan is loading supplies for the invasion of the Marianas. Red and Cookie watch as the crew manhandle the cargo nets and lower them into the hold. “I used to hate having to work in the hold,” says Red. Cookie gives a knowing smile and the continue to chat away while they walk over to a shaded spot. They look around and are amazed at the amount of shipping that they see. “No way the Japanese can stop this,” says Red.

Sam watches the troops loading onto ships and wonders when it'll be his turn. “They don't pay us to take it easy,” he mutters to a member of the squad. They have no idea of where the troops are going, just that they have no orders to board a ship themselves.

“The scuttlebutt is that we're going to follow the 1st Marine Division as soon as the Army sends replacements for us here,” says the clerk from regimental HQs. Slim looks at him and wonders if any of this is true.

The CL Helena has finished replenishment and moves off to make way for the next ship. Bill watches the helmsman deftly handle the ship. He remembers the first time he had sea duty and how scared he was of making a mistake as the LT, JG gives orders and they are carried out. He leaves the bridge and stops in the wardroom for some coffee, which makes him smile as he thinks of Dave, which in turn brings Sandy to mind. He decides to go to his cabin and there he will compose a letter to her.

FDR listens to the presenter and nods. First Guam and Tinian, then Saipan, followed by Ulithi and Pagan. Depending how things go Yap and Palau might be targeted or starved to death. In the meantime troops are being shifted for the next big operations as fuel and supplies flow forward.

“We have orders for what? When do we ship out? Oh, our next base is still in Japanese hands? OK, so we'll just cool our heels here for a while.” The Flying Deuces CO leaves the base CO's HQs and returns to his ops tent to see tomorrow's flying schedule.

Combat

Pagan was raided by 64 X B-25J and an escort of 7 X Spitfire VIII, 7 X Thunderbolt II and a few F-5Cs snooping around. No planes were hit by ground fire which was very light and inaccurate. The base was lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were light.

The DD Evertsen limped into Darwin's harbor today having won her battle against the sea after hitting the mine at Kai Island. The crew immediately set off to find the pilots who covered them during their arduous voyage to thank them.

Another long training flight and this time they had to abort due to an engine failure. After returning to base the Lucky 11 discuss this problem and Gel says, “It's a new plane and we're the ones that'll have to work the bugs out of them.” It's not exactly something the guys are comfortable with. Gil has decided that they're going to fight in the Pacific. When the others asks him how he knows he just replies that he really doesn't. Then he says that if the B-17s and 24s have the range for Europe why does the B-29 have so much more in the way of legs? Food for thought.

The ships continue loading at Wake, though the Palawan has moved off as she's been filled to capacity. Red plays with Lucky on deck while Cookie prepares a meal for the crew. Red really enjoys being the radio operator as it saves him from the manual labor required on the ship. The crew's mood is somber as they wonder where they're going. They've done many supply runs before, but invasions aren't their regular thing. “Would you get a load of the size of that carrier,” says the man leaning on the ship's raid, “It dwarfs the battle wagon.”

Sam has been called to a meeting of all the company's NCOs. Once there they are informed that the operation that they have been watching is only a part of it, not the part that's for them..”There's an island named Saipan, big and heavily defended. That's our mission. We load up and follow after the other 2 islands in the group have been taken,” says their CO. After the meeting ends the men return to their charges and pass the word on to them. Sam thinks that this'll make Eniwetok look like a cakewalk. He hopes that the Navy pounds the living daylights out of Saipan and that there will be lots of air support.

3 German DDs were sunk in the Bay of Biscay by the RN cruisers Enterprise and Glasgow.

Ortona has finally been cleared.

Combat

The SS S-46, 19 miles E of Macassar, located and attacked 5 APDs, hitting 1 of them with a torpedo causing the vessel to sink. She then underwent a violent and prolonged attack from the other 4 ships.

Mandalay was bombed by 116 X Liberator VIs and their escort of 9 Spitfire VIIIs and 25 P-38Js. A bomber was damaged by ground fire as the base was inundated with bombs for very heavy damage, multiple secondary explosions and heavy casualties.

Myitkyina was raided by 28 B-24Js, of which 3 were damaged by the AA. Damage to the base was moderate, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and losses to the troops were light.

Kwajalein was raided by 26 X PB4Y and 24 Zekes were up to intercept them. The bombers fought their way through the CAP and flak loosing 4 planes and having 10 others damaged while they destroyed 4 Zekes and damaged as others. The airfield took light damage, there were a couple of secondary explosions, 6 Bettys were destroyed and casualties among the troops were light.

Jaluit's port was hit for light damage by 42 X B-25J, 2 damaged, and 46 X P-38G.

The base commander at Wake Island can't understand the unknown radio signals that have been detected. Were could anyone find room to hide on this cramp piece of sand and coral? In any event he orders that the source be found and dealt with. The concern is that the Japanese could have a spy here who is watching the loading fleet.

Stick flew another CAP mission and then enjoyed a shower in the rain. He even got to rinse himself off before it stopped.

Gil talks to Gel about the alarming number of engine failures and the flight engineer tells him that most planes rushed into service will have bugs to be worked out. He goes on to say that in his opinion the engines are a bit underpowered for the loads that the planes will be carrying. He finishes with, “They are big, beautiful birds though.”

Elaine, her parents and sister are sitting in the living room around the fireplace. Pittsburgh winters get pretty raw and tonight is no exception. Elaine and her sister are talking about when they were younger and Elaine says, “I remember when we made those paths of ice with the hose and then ran and slid around the backyard all day.” She also remembers that Gil is off somewhere and the war continues to rage. A neighbor put a small flag with the star on it representing a lost son in their window today.

Slim and his squad spent the morning with the company doing calisthenics. There is precious little space on the island to do much more than that. In the afternoon after tending to their weapons they laze around watching planes come and go.

Cookie reads the message that the company has forwarded to the Palawan. Red told him that he wouldn't like it and he agrees. The lawyer has informed them that the bank has decided not to extend any further credit to them and that this decision would be reviewed after the end of the war. “Damn,” mutters Cookie, “I suppose that our investments will be frozen at their current levels until we can find another source of money.” Red agrees and stretches out on the hatch cover catching some of the warming rays.

The British commanders are confident that their attack into Burma will surprise the Japanese and they are pressuring London for additional troops so that their campaign can be expanded in scope.

FDR sits in a room with Admiral King and General Marshall and discusses the course of the war. He is confident that the Germans and Japanese are on the run, but he asks about the Marianas campaign. He is told that there is no reason to doubt the complete success of the operation.

Berlin was heavily bombed again.

Combat

The SS Triton, 198 miles NE of Tori Shima, hit an ML with 2 fish, killing it. The other ML ran like a rabbit.

Chungking was swept by 3 Zekes, 37 Jacks, 35 Nicks, 58 Tonys and a Dinah. The Chinese threw 78 P-40Ns at them and 74 of them were destroyed. The Japanese lost a Zeke, 9 Jacks (1 damaged), 6 Nicks (1 damaged) and 32 Tonys. The Dinah was damaged and the Chinese are wondering if it will survive to report the demise of their fighter force.

Mandalay was bombed by 103 Liberator VIs, 9 Spitfire VIIIs and 22 P-38Js. 3 bombers were damaged by ground fire while they did heavy damage to the base, caused some secondary explosions and inflicted moderate casualties on the troops.

Myitkyina was raided by 28 B-24Js and the base took moderate damage, some secondary explosions were observed and troop losses were light.

Lautem was swept by 44 P-38Js and 42 Zekes, 31 Jacks and 9 Tonys rose to challenge them. 17 of the Zekes were sent crashing to the ground, 4 Jacks were shot down and 9 Tonys were killed while 8 Lightnings went down and 3 others were damaged.

Kwajalein was attacked by 17 PB4Ys and 17 Zekes sliced into them. 3 Zekes were shot down as the bombers lost a plane and had 3 others damaged. The airfield had light damage, a couple of secondary explosions and 2 Bettys were toasted.

Jaluit was hit by 47 B-25Js and 45 X P-38Gs. 2 of the Mitchells were damaged as the port was lightly damaged and a couple of large secondary explosions were reported.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was bombed by 9 Helens and both sides sustained no losses.

The SS Grunion, near Kavieng, struck an AK with a torpedo and then was pounded by the escorts. She was badly beaten up and will now make for Luganville for repairs, if her crew can stop the flooding.

Chinese troops are poised at the river crossing to attempt forcing a crossing there into Burma.

The CW troops should emerge from the jungles tomorrow onto the road net of Burma under the cover of rain in their attempt to breach the Japanese lines and take Mandalay. In support of this more troops are moving on Pagan and Paratroops will attack there too.

Slim watches as the men taste their concoction and pronounce it suitable for a New Years Eve party. The still has been hidden from the officers, or so the men think. Actually the company's officers have turned a blind eye to the still knowing that morale would suffer if they shut it down. Soon enough, Slim thinks, they will be on their way to an unknown destination and the guys will have to figure out a way to smuggle their still onto the ship. For some creative Marines this task won't be to difficult.

The Lucky 11 had a training flight scheduled for tomorrow night, but it got scrubbed. The guys are pleased with this as they want to bring in 1944 with a celebration rather than work. Gil lies on his cot reading a letter from Elaine when one of the guys stops him to show a picture of his girlfriend. “How about your gal? Let's see a picture,” he says and Gil sheepishly produces a picture taken of Elaine when they were boating on a lake. “Wow! Hey guys take a gander at the dish Gil's been keeping secret.” The picture gets passed around and the guys agree that Elaine is a looker.

Sam has managed to obtain some spirits from the Sea Bees and another guy in the squad has obtained a case of warm beer. “Don't ask where it came from and keep it hidden,” the guy says with a grin on his face.

The Soviets took Zhitomir.

The SS Sailfish, 31 miles SE of Kendari, was jumped by 5 DDs who gave her a rough time of it. The sub finally managed to evade her tormentors, but then they found her again and picked up where they left off. Once more the sub escaped and a collective sigh was heard in the boat. It was a rough morning and then the afternoon went to hell as the tin cans found her and once more lowered the boom on her. After surviving their 3rd depth charging of the day the crew was exhausted and emotionally spent when suddenly the DDs returned for another try at the Sailfish. This time the sub's location wasn't pinned down and they escaped any further damage. Due to many systems suffering damage, the least of which is a bent propeller shaft, the Sailfish will now retire to Darwin.

Kweiyang was attacked by 114 Helens, 20 Georges, 7 Tojos, 10 Tonys and 5 Dinahs taking a peek. The base was heavily damaged, supplies were destroyed and there were heavy casualties. The Japanese departed untouched.

Mandalay was bombed by 103 Liberator VIs, 9 Spitfire VIIIs and 24 P-38Js. The base was very heavily damaged and personnel losses were heavy. No planes were damaged.

Myitkyina was raided by 35 B-24Js, 4 of which were damaged by flak. The base was moderately damaged, a secondary explosion was observed and troops losses were light.

Lautem was attacked by 62 X B-25J, 48 X B-24D, 94 X B-24J, 12 X Kittyhawk III, 16 X P-40N, 41 X P-38J and 50 X P-47D. A CAP of 23 Zekes, 28 Jacks and a Tony went to work and the skies were filled with planes trailing smoke, burning and falling. Between the air to air combat and the bombs the Japanese suffered the loss of 27 Zekes, 29 Jacks, a Tony, 11 Bettys and a Dinah. The Allies paid a price of 6 Mitchells damaged, 6 B-24Ds damaged, a B-24J shot down (10 damaged), 5 Kittyhawk IIIs destroyed (another damaged), 4 P-40N trashed (1 damaged), 10 P-38Js lost (2 damaged) and 2 Thunderbolts destroyed (1 damaged). The airfield suffered very heavy damaged, lots of secondary explosions and there were very heavy casualties to the personnel there.

Kwajalein was targeted by 13 PB4Ys and they were met by 19 Zekes. 4 bombers went down and 5 more were damaged as the Japanese had 3 Zekes damaged and 2 Bettys destroyed while the airfield was lightly damaged. There was a large secondary explosion and light losses to the troops.

Jaluit was struck by 41 B-25Js and 37 P-38Gs for light damage to the port at the cost of 3 damaged bombers.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was attacked by 6 Helens, but the bombs were off the mark and the troops didn't have anything to shoot at them.

Marcus Island's port was bombed by 64 X PB4Y, of which AA claimed 1 and damaged 20 others. The port was lightly damaged and so were troop casualties.

Tulagi was being protected by 3 Zekes, 23 Jacks and 5 Tonys out of Lunga when a sweep of 21 P-38Js arrived. The fighting witnessed a Jack destroyed, 3 Tonys shot down, 3 P-38Js splashed and another one damaged. A snooping PBY was also damaged.

Ground combat at the river crossing near Lashio saw the Chinese force their way across the Salween as the Japanese tried to hold them off. Japanese losses were light as were the Chinese casualties.

The CW troops have hit the road net between Myitkyina and Mandalay and to their knowledge they haven't been spotted yet. That will change very shortly as they approach their objectives.

Bill goes over fitness reports that he must submit for the officers of the Helena. Only one of them is less than optimal and this bothers him. He sighs as he attends to the stack of paperwork that comes with command. Very soon Helena will sail as part of the invasion of the Marianas swings into action.

Cookie has prepared a holiday meal for the crew and even managed to produce a few bottles of French champagne. “Where did you and how did you latch onto this?” asks Red. Cookie laughs and reminds Red that they spent lots of time in and around Noumea.

Word has been passed that the Lucky 11 won't be going anywhere in the near future as the training will continue until a plane is ready for them to marry up to. Gil is bored as there's little to do if they aren't flying. He watches a game of craps and writes a letter to Elaine.

Sam relaxes on the beach with the others in his squad. He drifts off to sleep in the shade of a palm tree only to be awakened by the roar of aircraft engines. He wonders how the mechanics can bear the noise levels that they must deal with on a regular basis. One of the guys says that this is nothing. He was told about some of the big bomber bases and how hundreds of roaring engines is enough to make you go deaf.

All over the world men overseas face a new year and silently consider what it will bring. For the men serving in the PTO it will bring an increased pace as the pressure will be heaped on the Japanese.

Allied merchant shipping sunk by U-boats worldwide this year was 588 ships for 3,042,371 gross tons. 242 U-boats were sunk.

Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs, Chief of Personnel Office, reported that the USN has expanded from 325,095 to 2,250,000 and the USMC from 70,000 to 391,000 over the last 2 years.

Combat

The SS Steelhead, 73 miles SE of Rabaul, was being stalked by 5 PGs and the hunted turned hunter by putting a fish into one of them.

Chungking was swept by 9 Zekes, 33 Jacks, 10 Tojos, 40 Nicks, 61 Tonys and a Dinah was along for the ride. The Chinese threw 24 P-40Ns at them and lost all but 1 for their effort. 3 Tojos, a Nick and 11 Tonys were killed while a Nick and a Dinah were damaged.

Pagan was raided by 54 Mitchells, 7 Spits and 7 Thunderbolts and the base was moderately damaged, with many secondary explosions claimed while the planes left unscathed.

Mandalay was swept by 32 Corsairs, but nobody was home so after a while they left. Then as the fighters were leaving 106 Liberators appeared and 1 was damaged by ground fire while the base was very heavily damaged, with many secondary explosions and the troops had heavy losses.

Lashio was under a CAP of 41 Georges when a sweep made up of 41 P-38Js showed up. 21 of the Japanese planes were destroyed while a lone Lightning went down and 6 others were damaged. A second sweep arrived a while later comprised of 24 P-38Js and 14 Georges challenged them. No Allied planes were damaged as the Japanese lost another 11 Georges.

Myitkyina was raided by 26 X B-24J for light damage and light casualties. 3 of the bombers were damaged in the attack.

Lautem was attacked by 89 X B-24D and 31 X P-38J. No opposition was in the air, but AA knocked down a bomber and damaged 15 more of them. The airfield was heavily damaged, many secondary explosions were reported, personnel losses were heavy and 10 Bettys, an Emily and a Dinah were destroyed.

Kwajalein was raided by 8 X PB4Y and 20 Zekes pounced on them. A bomber went down and 4 more were damaged as 2 Zekes were damaged the airfield had light damage and a Betty was destroyed.

Jaluit was hit by 32 B-25Js (4 damaged) and 38 P-38Gs who did light damage to the port.

Tulagi was swept by 21 P-38Js, but no Japanese aircraft were aloft. A PBY was damaged by flak as the fighters watched.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF fresh of it's being pushed back from the river by yesterday's Chinese assault was bombed by 49 Mitchells and 11 Warhawks. The unit took heavy casualties. The Japanese threw some shells at the Chinese troops, but did no damage.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was struck by 9 Helens and the Chinese had light losses.

Marcus Island was attacked by 48 PB4Ys and AA fire claimed 3 and damaged 21 while the port was moderately damaged and troop losses were very light.

“I told you this war would last forever,” says the man. Stick shakes his head and the man continues, “It's a new year and you still have a chance of actually flying a real combat mission.” Stick has lost his fervor and now just wants to get off of Eniwetok. The squadron's exec walks into the ops tent and says that Stick has been granted his wish as the Flying Deuces are now in a standby status to fly back to Wake Island. He explains that they will be replaced by 2 other squadrons here and that they will be loaded on a ship to be sent to some other place further west.

Slim and Gunny are attending a meeting for the company's NCOs where they are told nothing new. Upon his return the guys try to pry news out of him and all he can tell them is the same old stuff. “If you don't believe me ask Gunny,” Slim tells them. Most of the guys just moan and drift away, hungover from last night.

Palawan awaits her convoy's sailing orders. They are going to and island named Guam, once it falls into friendly hands. After that they will be based there for a while. “See, we get farther away from Hawaii over time,” says Red. Cookie can only agree and they both say that hanging around Luganville and Noumea was a damned site safer than this.

Gil sits in the mess hall thinking of the future as he toys with his chow. He misses his family and Elaine, but he doesn't miss being a civilian. The military offered him an escape from the Great Depression. He thinks about all that has transpired and thinks that since he's been in the Army he's actually gained weight. Life certainly is funny, he thinks. I've got a girl in Pittsburgh and here I am in New Mexico bound for who knows where. Hoppy, the left gunner, asks Gil what he's going to do once the war is over and after a bit of thought Gil responds, “I'd like to go to college and become a history teacher.”

The man leaves 10 Downing street and climbs into the waiting car that takes him away. Churchill looks at the packet left by the man and chews on a cigar as he reads. The operation in Burma is progressing nicely and the RN has managed to put together the shipping needed for an amphibious attack below Rangoon to isolate it. Once the troops have assembled they will await the advancing army to close on Rangoon and then they will board ships bound for Moulmein. It's not a very ambitious operation, but it just might gut the Japanese defense of the entire area. Winston would love to see British troops retake Singapore.

Rommel became the CinC of Army Group B (France N of the Loire River).

Mark Clark took command of the US 7th Army in addition to commanding the 5th Army.
