DW not running, tried several fixes - 1/6/2012 5:41:44 AM

Hi,

Just bought DW and both expansions today, download and install on my Win 7 64bit Toshiba Satellite. Tried to run the game both from the menu and from the quick start, got the same "distant worlds has stopped working" message. So, I read around the tech support forums and tried most of the fixes already suggested for these errors. IE and WMP are updated and installed. UAC is disabled. Game ran same error whether it was original DW, RotS, or Legends. I did notice an additonal error when I ran just the original, involving not being able to activate a particular file, but expansions installed fine just the same. Tried accessing the events log, which crashed. Tried going into properties, and windows explorer crashed, which hasn't happened before. I have Legends patched to 1076, and when I tried running the original DW it was 1060. Tried re-installing several times, even tried a suggestion I read about re-installing on the desktop. Same "distant worlds has stopped working" error. Not sure what's going on, if it's a corrupt file in the original or something else. Any help would be appreciated.

Respectfully,
-Turnip

This may be a stupid question, but did you try running it as administrator?

But if Windows Explorer is crashing when you try and view properties and log files, it sounds like a more serious system issue. (Disk corruption maybe?)

I did try running as admin via keyboard hotkey (ctrl-shift-click) and then just turned user account control off entirely. A corrupt disk drive would be a problem, but it could be possible. I don't know enough myself to know if that's the issue.

Interesting development.

So I tried installing and running on a different computer to see if the problem repeats itself. Base game runs beautifully, but as soon as I installed one or both expansions I got the familiar "DW stopped working error". Tried moving everything to a desktop folder, but that didn't help. So uninstalled and reinstalled original, which works fine.

Hmm,

I suggest redownloading the install and patch files. Might be corrupt. Then try following install order:

1. Install base game
2. Install ROTS
3. Install ROTS 1.508 patch
4. Install Legends
5. Install Legends 1.706 patch
6. optional: Install 1.707 beta patch (recommended, works like a charm)

Neither of those have anything to do with DW.

Sounds like you have a problem with Windows or with your HDD, and DW behaviour is merely a symptom of those problems.

I confirm that, if the event logger or windows explorer tend to crash you probably have something wrong that has nothing to do with DW.
First, I don't see a word about .NET framework in these posts… In case you haven't, try and install the latest .NET framework from microsoft's site. If you have it already, maybe something went wrong in its install, and it may be able to cause problems throughout the whole system, and you may want to try uninstall and reinstall it (DW problems may only be a symptom of this).
Computer constructors and internet service providers also tend to install a lot of useless and problem causing software on their PCs. Maybe one of them is causing you trouble. I would uninstall anything that is not a driver or not really useful. Among useless software people install because of their outstanding marketing propaganda, antivirus software. They cause a lot more problems (like crashing the event logger or the explorer) than they solve. In fact, they rarely solve anything, but claim finding viruses all the time where there is usually none, and miss pretty much all real threats. With or without an antivirus, just avoid visiting or downloading from sites which reputation you don't know (or know is bad, of course).

To check for your hard drive integrity, you can try this:
1- Hit Windows+R on your keyboard
2- in the new window, type cmd, then enter
3- in the new black window, type chkdsk /F

It will then check your C: disk partition for any problem and try to fix them, and report its finds. If you have installed the game in another partition, specify it after the chkdsk command (something like chkdik D: /F).

I concur that there is likely some Windows- or hardware-related issue on your original PC.

For the problems with the expansions on your other PC: if the following file exists, please paste the contents in this thread:
C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Code Force Limited\Distant Worlds\1.7.0.6\DW_CrashDump.txt

The above crash-dump file may contain useful info to help in identifying why they won't run.

Thanks
Elliot
