or does it modify an earlier version of Operational Art of War that needs to be installed first in order for it to work? Does it run well on Windows 7, or does it need to be launched in compatibility mode? Thanks for your help!

TOAW III is a stand-alone game. (But note that the updates to TOAW III are not stand-alone: you must have TOAW III installed for them to work). It should be set to XP compatability mode to run properly in Vista or Win7. With that caveat, it runs fine in them.

I have no problem running TOAW III on W7 without any need for the compatibility mode.

The same here.

I suppose to run the installer in compatibility mode. The 3.4 patch however doesn't need that.
