The following is an excellent thread re using ports without a repair shipyard to upgrade ships that requires a size 0 repair shipyard (the info also appears in the faq).
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2489860

Although the exact formula is unknown per Don (which is, of course, okay/not a big deal) does anyone have any additional insights from gameplay experience re calculating what size ports you need and combination of support to upgrade "size 0 repair shipyard required" ships?

E.g., Don gives an example, but I do not understand how a lvl 5 port + no naval support + an AR = can only upgrade yard size 0 ships up to 18,800 tons.

Not looking for an exact answer, but rather a "rule of thumb" or other examples that work.

Thanks!

I think you can do those upgrades pretty much everywhere. I've never notice that the port size is a problem, maybe because most of those "size 0 repair shipyard required" ships are by definition small.

I think some of the CL and AS class ships have size 0 shipyard upgrades too, but usually I operate them medium size ports anyway.

I has logic.
Most of those "0" yard upgrades are when you changing small guns etc. It is nothing that can be done with few man, small lift and rope

I never thought this was a big deal until I had a bunch of trouble and ended up doing trial-and-error in multiple ports to get a IJN AKE to upgrade its AA guns. In the end I threw in the towel and sent it to Singapore.

Did that AKE had supplies? Ship have to be empty.

Puhis,

Doh! Thanks, I forgot - I am sure that was the problem.

The caveat for upgrading in a port without shipyard requirement is that: port size^3 * 100 has to be larger than the vessels tonnage.

Don't try to find it in the manual, it's not there. But it has been confirmed by a dev.
