I just went to order a game and was wondering how the shipping costs are calculated.
As a postal worker I asked if it could be shipped through the postoffice. I was told the only options are through UPS or Fedex. But through the post office they could do express with a $20 and some cents fee.
Since all I'm getting is a CD in it's case, where does that figure come from?
If the post office was an option like the other two I know it would cost:
Express (next day): $12.45 up to half a pound plus whatever you're tacking on - apparrently another $8! (the $12.45 includes free up to $500 insurance)
Priority: $3.50 up to one pound and you can tack on to that 40 cents to confirm delivery and $1.10 to insure up to $50, for a total of $5.00 for 2-3 day service.
Media Mail: (the old book rate, slowest/cheapest):
$1.33 for up to one pound, plus 50 cents to confirm delivery and $1.10 if you wanted to insure it for a max of $2.93 and take about a week.
I'm assuming the post office is not an option due to some sort of deal you have with the other companies?
And what would be the source of the additional money needed for shipping? the packaging? You can get free priority or express packaging delivered to you from the postoffice. The effort for someone to put the disk in the packaging? The effort to hand it to the mailman when they come to deliver/pickup, or effort to stick it in the mail box? OK, I'll quit whining. I know the other option is to download but with my 56k modem it seems to take too long keeping the phone line tied up. So I guess I could just call "1-800-waaah!" BvB

I could type a long message, or just say, see my thread in Steel Panthers WaW forum titled "Wanna hear something cool". If you are foreign and troubled over shipping costs this is for you. Of course I cant account for every permutation within the states itself, I have your solution if you DONT live IN the continental US. Or you could just go on meekly getting abused by the establishment as your product travels across the border.

Hi Guys We offer UPS, FedEx, and USPS. Any one of these options can be used in the USA or overseas. P.O. Boxes and APO MUST use USPS. We also have a shippment Quoter you can use at http://www.matrixgames.com/store/shipquote.html I hope this helps clear everything up.

I live in the states and have a normal street address. I made my order by phone and while I specifically asked if my "Lost Victories" could be shipped by USPS, the girl on the phone said no. She said my options were UPS or FEDEX. That the only USPS offering was express mail at over $20 and that any other USPS service such as Priority was not available.
So, again, my two questions are: 1) why isn't USPS supported except for express. 2) why did the operator state $20 for USPS express mail?

When I ordered MCLV in late september, the UNIQUE option available was FEDEX... This does not clear everything...Nothing in fact, and the cost difference does not like to me...

For those living outside of the USA. I figure the disk and envelope should weigh around 6 oz or less. If sent normal airmail at $.80 cents an ounce things shouldn't be too expensive. And for some countries Global Priority would be an option - in the large flat rate envelope at around $9 for up to 4 pounds. With that I can understand Matrix tacking on some nominal costs for their troubles. But when I asked what the cheapest was the lady on the phone gave me a fee of around $9.47 or somewhere in there. This may all really be trivial as I have to salute Matrix for their games. I just have always wondered what a reasonable shipping fee should be and why the normal post office is not given as an option.

The following is snipped directly from the Matrix store order processing page. You can reach this page after logging in and placing an order....
(It should be noted of course, that it is based on MY address in Canada. If you live in the states the options will likely be a bit different and I suspect somewhat cheaper.) "Review & Complete Your Order

Your order is almost complete! Please review the shipping method and the summary of your order below to make sure it's correct.
Your order will be processed when you click the "Complete Your Order" button below.

Choose a shipping option*
UPS Canada Ground $ 11.31
UPS Canada Expedited $ 37.76
UPS Canada Express $ 40.02
FedEx International $ 21.50
USPS Global Express Mail $ 20.15
USPS Global Priority Mail $ 10.50 *Additional Duties and taxes may apply for international shipments. All shipments delivery times are based on the date the order ships from our warehouse and not the date the order was placed. All sales are final. " Sorry but I can not place the link here for you. You will have to take my word for it. Tetchyy [ January 27, 2002: Message edited by: Tetchyy ]

Hi Guys You didn't say when you placed your order with the operator nor did anybody else. These shipping options are new and expanded. The reason we do not use USPS air is because there is no tracking number on these packages. Credit Cards dealers demand that we have a tracking number or we get left holding the bad. Some of you asked to use us to use USPS and return receipt. Nice idea but the Credit Card dealers do not consider this good enough. Also we do not have the staff to track and hold these little green cards when there are returned. The Options available today from us with our Shipment Quoter and our new Customer Status and tracking section should make Matrix Games Order, tracking and status checking one of the best in the industry. We tried to make it simple and fit into most gamers budget. For our overseas customers remember we now offer a good amount of dealers (http://www.matrixgames.com/dealers_2.asp) that can ship closer to many of our customers. These dealers offer many special options of their own so make sure to check them out. So until wargaming gets as popular as first person shooters this is a the best we can currently do. As you should already know we are always looking for ways to improve our service and if any one has what they think is a good idea please pass it along.

This list is missing one option (not that is Matrix's fault) Choose a shipping option*
UPS Canada Ground $ 11.31
UPS Canada Expedited $ 37.76
UPS Canada Express $ 40.02
FedEx International $ 21.50
USPS Global Express Mail $ 20.15
USPS Global Priority Mail $ 10.50 and finally.... Your online friend you made, living in the US,
$8-9.00 + $2.00 for remailing to any portion of the planet sans any other form of additional add on costs.

To David Heath's post: You asked when I placed my order. It was yesterday, Sunday, at 730am eastern time when the operator told me USPS was not an option. If sent either Media (book rate) or Priority, for 50 or 40 cents you can get delivery confirmation stateside. Is that what you meant by tracking? Then you don't have to worry 'bout return reciepts. As for international, you said you don't use normal air as it's not trackable. But you do offer Global Priority, and that is not trackable either. Global Priority is faster but does not allow any insurance or tracking. So that would mean Airmail should also be an option.
Ok, I've whined enough... it's not the money so much as the wish for the USPS options that seem cheaper and just as efficient. I deal with people that use USPS, UPS, FEDEX, and Airborne and all have there good and bad points. The postoffice has deals with both FEDEX & Airborne to share shipping of each other's stuff to some extent. Fedex ships the postoffice's express & priority on the same planes at different prices since October in exchange for being allowed to put their drop boxes in front of all post offices. The down side of this is that the postoffice in most cases now won't guarantee deliveries on Sun/Holiday for express due to FEDEX not working those days.
Well, good luck on the gaming battlefields... BvB
