Status: offline 		yup, though I was thinking it was the Michel, not the Komet? and of course the trick part of the question was that at the time the USSR wasn't yet one of the Allies. whichever one it was, their journey was not completely 'at sea' as after the passage of the Bering Strait, it docked in Japan. [I like to send German CX units to Japanese bases outside of Japan where no FTC is required; Saipan is a good one for this]

I had a much better question for that unit, but now I blew it already - what WiF unit sailed off the map?

Spent a whole hour pouring through my books, no luck so far. All I gathered that it must belong to Heeresgruppe A, fighting near the oil fields. But as it's now 3:10 am I'm off to bed.

I think I actually know this;

Farthest east - 16th inf div (mot)

Farthest into the SU - 13th panzer division. If I'm not mistaken they were less than 60 miles from Grozny, at a place I won't even try to write correctly...

Status: offline 		though I like the trick question some times, no tricks. just the combat unit that made it the farthest east and lived to tell about it. their parent division, actually. it's not much of a hint to say it was a reconnaissance abteilung = battalion. they may have smelled salt air but they didn't see any blue water, at least not the land unit. there is an Axis naval unit involved too. What was it?

the farthest into the Soviet Union is a different answer.

What Axis naval unit was along with the 16th Mot Recon? That is from a little sketchier bit of info.

The 16th mot was nicknamed "Windhund-Division" the "Greyhound Div" because of their speed and far advance.


I know we are not allowed to use Google,(frowned upon) but may we use pages in the net that have not been googled such as our bookmarks?

Status: offline 		I think you should be able to do that, but then you should state that you did :) I have alot of books about WW2, but I find that more and more information comes from the net, and I can't remember the last time I actually read a historical book for the first time. Probably 4-5 years ago. Which is a shame, few things beat a good sofa, a blanket, a cup of tea and an interesting book.

That said, I'm playing an advanced form for Axis and Allies with 3-4 friends a couple of times each year - we're playing World at War with almost 100% changed rules, and we got into a discussion last time about how far the Germans actually got before they were turned back. So, I learned this one two months ago, but we did google it back then.

If I'm not mistaken Wilhelm was still upset that he had to leave Germany and live a simple life in Holland. He never visited Germany at all.

The moment he would try to enter Germany, Hitler would have him arrested. Also: when the Germans conquered the Netherlands a special unit was gathered to guard the castle of Doorn to prevent him leaving there. Hitler didn't want him anywhere in Germany at all. The Kaiser also made a vow never to return to Germany and even forbid the returning of his remains to Germany if the Monarchy wasn't restored first. That a Bömisches Corporal ruled over Germany was appalling to him, but so was the Weimar Régime or President Hindenburg in his eyes.
You are still right about the Kaiser hating the Nazi Regime. However: there was one very particular statement made in his wishes, regarding his funeral. This has to do with the wreath, but it wasn't the wreath itself that was against his wishes...

There are still princes here in Germany. Check out Prinz Ernst August.
He's always involved in some kind of scandal.

But the "royals" don't really have much power, they more or less just have their lands and status.

Status: offline 		I always thought 13th Panzer also made it the farthest east and read something recently about that actually being the 16th Mot. I went on to the net to get the details, and the details included a convoy of blue trucks advancing along with the 16th Mot's recon. On the blue trucks were said to be a squadron of Italian motor torpedo boats to launch in the Caspian Sea. I don't know how that turned out, just something I read online. Had never heard of that before.

Magee was the ball gunner of the B-17. Why was he so honoured?

Status: offline 		In the Royal Navy (British Navy) during World War II how can you tell the difference between a Mechanical Transport (MT) and a Landing Ship Infantry (LSI)?

(1) Check with the Ministry of War Transportation (MoWT).
(2) Check what they are carrying.
(3) The troops are getting in the boats.
(4) They carry landing craft.
