US West Coast campaign?

Anyone ever kick around the idea of a "what if" campaign of a Japanese invasion in California, Oregon, or Washington? Taking a step back for the "what if", even the defense of Hawaii amid volcanic ash beaches. I remember one California invasion scenario in Steel Panthers I.

I think a small campaign with either of these core forces would be kinda cool:

A) Infantry battalion core force, from beach defense to street fighting in Honolulu or Sacramento.

B) Light tank platoon core force, where the scenarios have your tankers being rushed from one crisis point to another. Victory points awarded would be very low so that losing even one tank would be a major setback.

I tried making a small hypothetical scenario a long time ago where green troops were en route by truck to a checkpoint along the California coast. While on their way, gunfire echoes in the distance; Japanese SNLF have scaled a cliff and are overrunning the outpost in the pre-dawn hours. You had to rally the outpost survivors at an inland ammo dump and together with the green troops, beat off an SNLF reconnaissance in force. It didn't exactly work out :) but was fun attempting to make anyways.

That sounds like a fun scenario. ^^

I'd like to see some things on U.S. soil, though I'm glad it practically didn't happen. A series (or better yet, a campaign) based on a cohesive "What if..." assumption would be interesting. A 20th Century Civil War would be entertaining, from a wargaming perspective... though the opportunities for infiltration and/or friendly fire are so great that I don't think SP:WAW is the best route for it (though not a bad one!).

Now, a non-interventionalist US "What if..." which allowed Germany to conquer Europe and begin expeditions against the US, that would be great to wargame. The same for the Pacific theatre, too... though I believe Tojo Japan was sane enough to realize they didn't want to frick with us on our own soil. (The Nazi leadership, on the other hand, I know were fricking nuts.)

So short version: There's room for this sort of thing, IMO.

I just started messing around with seriously mapping cities yesterday, and I was thinking, "Hey, I oughta get out a street map and do Sacramento."
At least the downtown portion anyway, with the riverfront, maybe spreading out to harbor, depending on how big a map I felt like doing.
It would be interesting to do a scenario of a Japanese invasion. I just read something a couple weeks ago that mentioned the Japanese high command was looking for a way to avoid having to invade the United States. They were afraid of the number of civilians who owned guns. In any scenario I modeled for an alternate history, I'd include a few platoons of militia among the Army and National Guard units. Maybe alter some units to represent local police for a "taken by surprise" scenario.
It would be great to do L.A. and S.F. too - especially S.F. All those hills and valleys within the city terrain....

Sparing the board a lesson on US politics, I'll suffice to say that any war scenario to hit "flyover country," Texas, or any urban area should always include armed civilians (gangs in the latter case). Kudos to you for thinking of that.

Per Rick, in the movie "Casablance" to Major Strasser, who asks him if he can imagine Germans in his beloved New York: There are certain neighborhoods I suggest you stay out of. Send'em to South Side Chicago, where they are at least as well equipped to fight an urban war as any enemy could be.

When heavily involved with Gary Grigsby's Pacific War I always played the Japanese side - per Rick I understand the view of both the hounds and the fox - and threatened to pull a Dolittle-san raid on Hollywood. Was going to rename a bunch of Betty bombers Orange Blossom's and launch them from a carrier off the California coast. I was going to bomb Warner Brothers backlot and studios while they were filming yet another war propaganda movie.

The funny part was, my opponent BELIEVED me.
