I'm on my bi-monthly "try to get past the first month of the grand campaign" restart, this time as the Japanese so that I can take the initiative and dictate my own pace instead of getting beat up on for the first couple months. I figure I can just focus my attention on key spots like Singapore and Manila one at a time, historical pace be damned. Anyway, I had a couple of quick questions:

1. When you're bombing a hex in support of ground combat, should you still use port/airfield attacks to generate the supply-reducing hits, even if the port/airfield is not being used, or should I just focus on Ground Attack to generate destroyed and disrupted squads?

2. Do IJN bombers like the Lily or the Sally (or even bomb-laden Nells and Betties) get similar hit rates as Allied 2E/4E bombers when set to 100 foot bombing altitudes? Yes, some would consider this a gamey tactic, but I'm playing against the AI, so I don't mind either way.

1. Two ways to look at it. While bombing the port/airfield will result in direct losses of supply (even if the port or airfield isn't in use), you can also bomb troops directly with less effect (however if they are disrupted or have damaged, but not destroyed units they will use supply to repair). In truth, the P/A route is probably the better, though I often use a mix of the two.

2. Japanese 2Es are notoriously weak in the face of heavy flak (which the Allies invariably have). They are more effective down there, but it will cost you dearly in planes (and even more importantly pilots) lost. Staying at 6k probably gives the best effect to loss ratio. Truth be told, IJA bombers are pretty bad overall.

Thanks for the advice :)

Do we have a reference / post for how to conduct manual sub ops? I've repeatedly heard nowadays that it's better to do it by hand, but I don't know where to start, especially on how different it is from doing commanding normal surface TFs. How much babysitting would be involved?

Bombing Air Fields and Ports is good for preventing Fort levels from increasing. Engineers will repair all damage to air fields and ports first before working on fortifications, so to me it's just as important, if not more so, than directly attacking troops.

Not sure if one exists, but I can give some advice...

You want to base the subs out of Kwaijelien or Truk early, patrol in the zones south of pearl harbor where scout planes can't effectively reach, and find the SLOCs.

I have had really good luck stationing patrol routes in that area, in the area around Suva (in 1 game I-10 put 4 torpedoes into Enterprise for me near Suva), and also between Australia and New Caledonia. Also, if you are playing the AI, in the area near Soerbaja is a good place to hunt. Later in the game, you need to adjust the patrols farther out and move their home bases forward.

Don't do like the AI and hover around the Great Barrier Reef...just gonna get em sunk in shallow water that is well covered by patrol planes.

If you need a reference I can make some screen grabs to post and show you the areas I usually patrol.

Thanks for the notes on patrol areas, but I was also going to ask about how to actually order the subs around. I know that for regular TFs, you create them, give them a destination, then they sail back and you have to disband/recreate them or give them new orders after replenishment. Do sub TFs work the same way or do you just set a patrol area for them and they'll shuttle back and forth from the base and the area?

A sub TF is just a TF.
