I am assuming this is not a bug and that I'm just not doing something right, but I can't get any of my IJN minelaying subs to load mines, even at a huge port like Tokyo. I set the task force for sub minelaying and hit the "replenish from port" key, and then I get a message that says "submarine is already loaded with mines." But, the submarine is NOT loaded with mines and if I sent it out to lay some, nothing happens.

I have never had this problem before against the AI or PBEM. Am I forgetting some key step? Was something changed in a patch? I assume I am messing this up somehow.

Do you have mines in pool?

Put it in a sub minelaying TF. It will load mines automatically. Then, when it gets back you can then replenish from port and reload the mines.

Yes, there are plenty of mines in the pool.

Nashvillen, that's the problem. It is a Sub Minelaying task force, but when I tell it to load mines, it says it is already loaded with mines. However, if you look at the ship display, it says there are not any mines loaded. I sent the sub out to lay some mines as an experiment to see if maybe it was just a display glitch, but no mines got laid. I disbanded the task force, waited a couple of days, then tried again and got the same "sub already loaded with mines" message. But it isn't.

Did you have toggled on, "lay mines"?

Even if a sub minelaying TF is loaded with mines, it still has to be told to lay them once it reaches the minelaying destination.

Alfred: yes, it was told to lay mines.

I assume these are not dedicated submarine minelayers. That being so the subs would displace some of their torpedo capacity when taking on mines.

Do the subs display fewer loaded torpedo tubes than when they have no mines loaded.

No, these are the dedicated sub minelayers, specifically I-122.

Yeah, I will get one next turn.

If you look at the ship screen, there is a red zero where mines should be loaded, even though I get the "mines already loaded" message when I try to load.

The sub is undamaged.

That is strange. We are missing something. I have had difficulties myself in the past, so I can feel your pain. Some screenshots of both your TF, the subs, and your device list with your Type 88 stockpile in it.

What I would love to do someday is do a partner game with one player taking care of all sub ops. One taking care of the IJA, one taking care of the IJN, and one taking care of the economy and the merchant marine and be overall in command. It would be cumbersome and slow, but really cool!

OK, here is the sub. It is I-124 actually, but still a minelaying sub. It is in a "sub minelaying" task force at Tokyo. If I tell it to replenish from port, it says "already loaded with mines", but the red zero won't go away, and it won't actually lay any mines.

That pic is exactly what my I-124 looks like in a Sub TF, not a Sub Minelaying TF. I'd guess you have data corruption in either the TF definition, or the mines loaded variable.

I'd post in the Tech sub-forum with a save.

Next turn I will see if other subs have the same problem loading mines or if it is just I-124.

What you need to do is to disband the TF in a port large enough to load the mines and then re-create the Sub Minelaying TF. When the TF is created it will load the mines, if the port is large enough to do so. It will not load mines by using the "replenish TF" button. Mines are only loaded when the minelaying TF is created - at least, that is what I have experienced.

Bradford: Yes, I know that. I-124 was disbanded in Tokyo for 4 days. Shouldn't Tokyo be a large enough port?

I have never opened up the game on the Japanese side, so I am not sure if there are any issues with I-124. She isn't a Glen carrying sub, is she?

I am sorry, FDRLincoln, but I read something different in your post:

"It is in a "sub minelaying" task force at Tokyo. If I tell it to replenish from port, it says "already loaded with mines", but the red zero won't go away, and it won't actually lay any mines."

This tells me that you were trying to add mines to a Sub Minelaying TF that was already in existence. That will not work, thus my message.

If there are mines in the pool, your sub is disbanded in Tokyo and when you create the Sub Minelaying TF it still loads no mines (even though it says that they are already loaded) then you have a bug. I would post this in the Technical Support forum and attach a game save so that MichaelM can look at it.

Sorry, Brad.

The chain of events was like this.

I-124 starts the game with mines. She laid them, per orders, then went to Tokyo.

She got to Tokyo. I disbanded her for a few days, then tried to send her out again on another mission. I created the Sub Minelaying task force, per usual, but a message came up that said "sub already loaded with mines."  Except she isn't.

I will try this with other subs and see if it is just this one ship or if it effects other subs and also surface minelayers.

I figured out the problem.

Mines were set to stockpile...so it was impossible for the sub to reload. I switched to "no stockpile" and I-124 loaded her mines. Problem fixed.

Thanks for being patient with me everyone. The details in this game are incredible.

You mean that the supply officer was following orders from above and not listening to a lowly sub jock? Horrors!!!

LOL, yeah.

Commander Hori: "What do you mean, I can't have any mines? We're supposed to depart for a minelaying mission tomorrow at 0600!"
Lieutenant Arashi: "I'm sorry, Sir, but I have orders to stockpile all mines. I'm not authorized to issue mines to your submarine or anyone else's"
Hori: "This is ridiculous! My orders come directly from Admiral Yamamoto at Combined Fleet!"
Arashi: "So do mine, Sir."

I remember reading an example from the ACW where General Braxton Bragg, as Commander of the Army of Tennessee, had requested supplies for his forces in the field. However, a few days later, General Braxton Bragg, in his dual role as Commander of the Department of the West, denied said request for supplies from the Army of Tennessee...

Kind of like sitting through a briefing at the Pentagon on the Army staff where an organization non-concurred on thier own recommended course of action.

Being I was somewhat junior to the primary participants, it was the only thing that kept me from asking "then why did you recommend that course of action in the first place?".

Stupidity, then, now and always......

i'm inclined to think that there's also a delay involved (even if stockpile is off, <grin>) where if several empty minelayers show up at an appropriate-size port, they won't all get re-armed immediately. similar to the way that several LCUs might need a certain device to fill out their TOEs, but they'll only be given a portion (despite enough devices being present in the pools) of their needs, 'cos the game-engine is biased against 'instant gratification'.
