Okay, lets try and make this a little more tricky:

Which Ship Am I?

1. I do have a counter in WIF.
Warspite1

Not the Gotland Orm.

1. I do have a counter in WIF
2. I did not survive the Second World War

What Italian port was attacked on December 2, 1943?

Over 100 German Junkers Ju-88 bombers of Luftflotte 2, achieving complete surprise, bombed shipping and personnel operating in support of the Allied Italian campaign, sinking 27 cargo and transport ships and a schooner in the harbor.

At first, the Allied High Command tried to conceal the disaster, in case the Germans believed that the Allies were preparing to use chemical weapons, which might provoke them into preemptive use, but there were too many witnesses to keep the secret, and in February the U.S. Chiefs of Staff issued a statement admitting to the accident and emphasising that the U.S. had no intention of using chemical weapons except in the case of retaliation.

The port is on the MWiF map.

Fire on ammunition ships John Harvey and bomb hits on John L. Motley caused massive detonations, which shattered windows seven miles away. A bulk gasoline pipeline and supply were severed and the gushing fuel ignited engulfing other ships.

In total, 800 crew and civilians lost their lives in the fire, explosions and poisoning by mustard gas that was on board John Harvey.

Allied Merchant Ships Lost

John Harvey (US Liberty) (7,177 tons)
John L. Motley (US Liberty) (7,176 tons)
John Bascom (US Liberty) (7,176 tons)
Joseph Wheeler (US Liberty) (7,176 tons)
Samuel J. Tilden (US Liberty) (7,176 tons)
Fort Athabasca (Canadian) (7,132 tons)
Fort Lajoie (Canadian) (7,134 tons)
Testbank (British) (5,083 tons)
Lars Kruse (British) (1,897 tons)
Devon Coast (British) (646 tons)
Bollsta (Norwegian) (1,832 tons)
Norlom (Norwegian) (6,412 tons)
Lom (Norwegian) (1,268 tons)
Lwow (Polish) (1,409 tons)
Puck (Polish) (1,065 tons)
Frosinone (Italian) (5,202 tons)
Barletta (Italian) (1,975 tons)

The australian cruiser Canberra, was badly damaged by the japanese and I believe the americans were forced to sink it after one of the naval engagements in the Guadalcanal area.

I have no idea about ships, only here because I like the quiz.

But could it be a Frenchie? That was sunk after France was lost to Germany.
Or might it be a ship that was sold to a foreign navy, thus flying an enemy flag?

True, but that would be sneaky - and besides, Canberra was the answer to my last ship question

You could be on to something Clue: she was sunk on the Pacific map

I think that has given it away.

Warspite1

It was indeed. She fought against the Siamese in the Franco-Siamese war in January 1941, and was largely responsible for decimating the latter's navy at Ko-Chang.

After a peace was negotiated - largely by the Japanese - the light cruiser was laid up and eventually became a training hulk for the IJN. She was at Camh Ran Bay near the end of the war when she was bombed and sunk.

Excuse spelling and dates - this is from memory.

3. In reality I was in existence at the start of WWII, (and in WIF I am available at the start of the Global Campaign (although I don't think I start the game on map)). Despite the foregoing, I did not get into combat until much later in the real war.

Looking over the units in MWIF I have a guess. I suspect that Warspite1 is searching for a English unit. Not that many English land units in the force pool 1939. Since it was an infantry unit but has another designation in MWIF I looked at the few units in the force pool that are not infantry

I do not think it is any of the armored units in MWIF. There is no way that an infantry unit becomes a armor in WIF (or so I choose to belive). And then there are cavalry units but that a infantry would become a cavalry in WIF is also unlikely. That leaves the 43rd Mot Div and 50th Mot Div. No real clue on which one of those Warspite1 is looking for (if I am correct this far). So in the end I decided to go for the unit that becomes available first in MWIF.

So my guess is the 43rd motorized division.

Edit: Or should the answer be 43rd infantry division?

43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division is the correct answer . My late Uncle's Division (he was in the 4th Battalion Wiltshire Regiment), he joined up in March 1939.

The 43rd was one of the finest infantry divisions in the British Army. The division was held back in the UK to train for the 2nd Front and so never went to North Africa, Burma or Italy. As a result the Wessex Wyvern's first saw action only in the fighting around Caen in July 1944.

The division fought in most of the major actions from then until the end of the war; Inc
Market Garden and the Reichswald. My uncle survived the war, despite being wounded twice - the second time was right at the end of the war outside Hamburg when his leg was blown off courtesy of a land mine.

Thanks Orm, I enjoyed that sojourn from naval counters; here's four more to be getting on with - which land unit am I?

No.1
1. I am a land unit that fought in World War II and I have my own counter - I am smaller than a Corps/Army unit

No.2
1. I am a land unit that fought in World War II and I have my own counter - I am larger than a divisional unit

No.3
1. I am a land unit that fought in World War II and I have my own counter - I am larger than a divisional unit

No.4
