Status: offline 		This will be a DaBigBabes “C” scenario, with the reduced cargo limits. Also, this will be PDU “off”, which is what explains the title of this AAR. Who says masochism can’t be fun! Even the lowly Nate has a role to play.

Arnhem and I have agreed to try and play this one as historical as possible – not in terms of it being a re-enactment – but rather attempting to bring about historically viable consequences utilising historically accurate forces and methods.

House rules we’ll keep discussing and evolving. One thing we’ve agreed to try will be a Monsoon Rule in Burma.

My strategy will be for a normal expansion to secure the Southern Resources Area. My advances will be bold yet calculated, with invasions in the majority of occasions taking place under air cover.

I really hate Allied four-engine bombers, and one of my tactics is to go after them whenever I can. I also have some strategies regarding interdicting Allied logistics that I might expand on later.

So, without any further ado:

OPENING MOVEMENTS:

One of my minelaying subs ironically hits a mine off Singapore and sinks shortly thereafter. A light freighter is heavily damaged by gunfire from one of my submarines and the poor bugger then runs into a heavy surface combat group and BB Haruna sinks it with three shells (profligate expenditure of main gun ammunition!). One of the worst results of the round for me, however, is when the Dutch sub SS KXI manages to put two torpedoes into a Yusen N carrying over a thousand troops – my transport attempts to return to Cam Ranh Bay but sinks shortly afterwards with no survivors.

PEARL HARBOR:

Quite a nice strike, in general. We lost 6 Kates and 4 Vals to flak. Half the Kates made torpedo runs. BB Nevada and BB Tennessee are definitely sunk, and it looks like BB Pennsylvania and BB Arizona are in trouble and might also sink. I’m quite happy with the hits on the smaller vessels – DD Schley, DD Jarvis, DM Breese and AM Grebe should sink, and CA New Orleans, CL Honolulu, CL Raleigh, CL St. Louis, DD Hull, DD Ralph Talbot and DD Worden will all need some time in the repair yard.

PHILIPPINES:

During a fighter sweep over Manila, Zeroes from Tainan Ku S-1 claim two P-26As.

We launch a massive 144-plane strike on Clark Field, the centre of US airpower in the region. Another 18 Sallies leak in later for another run. Of a total of 792 bombs dropped on the airbase, about a quarter are claimed to have hit their targets. The number of hits on the runway and airbase should mean that Clark Field will be unable to mount any strikes for the next few turns and it is unlikely they will be able to mount CAP operations from there. Also, it will take a long time to repair damaged aircraft there AND my opponent will be unable to construct fortifications while the airbase is being repaired. Despite the claims, I believe the total losses at Clark Field probably look as follows:

P-40B: 2 destroyed, 20 damaged
B-17D: 12 damaged
O-47A: 1 destroyed, 9 damaged
P-35A: 16 damaged

Total hits on Clark Field for the day: 47 Airbase hits, 6 Airbase supply hits, 134 Runway hits

It looks likely that all of his B-17s at Clark Field will be damaged.

Yokosuka 1st SNLF has taken Vigan and Yokosuka 3rd SNLF Aparri by parachute assault. Kanno Det will land at Vigan. Aparri will be invaded in a bit more strength: Tanaka Detachment, two JAAF AF Bns, 14th Army HQ, two engineer regiments, four artillery regiments and three construction units. Aparri’s airfield will be built up to Level 4 as soon as possible.

Mauban will be invaded by 20th Infantry Rgt, 16th Recon Rgt and 16th Engr Rgt (210 AV) by 12 December.

Legaspi will be invaded by the Kimura Detachment (84 AV) and will advance north along the railway track.

Lingayen will be invaded in a week’s time after bombardment by a six-BB bombardment group by the following forces:

1st Formosa Inf Rgt, 47th Infantry Rgt, 9th Infantry Rgt, 4th and 7th Tank Rgts, 1st, 20th, 26th and 48th Recon Rgts, 1st Medium FA and 48th FA Rgt, and 48th Engr Rgt – about 650 AV. They will later be reinforced by 65th Bde (another 250 AV).

MINDANAO

Cagayan:
Twelve Kates drop bombs on the airbase from 6000 feet and claim a 100% hit rate (yeah right). Same rationale here, I want to destroy his offensive heavy bomber capability. The Kate strike likely damaged only 3 or 4 B-17s in reality. But the pain comes later when a strong Japanese cruiser bombardment force shells Cagayan with a very high detection level given strong recon: Allied ground forces report 1076 casualties (mostly Non-Combat, so it appears to be the base forces and Mindanao Force Corps HQ, with a total of 38 destroyed and 63 disabled), there are additional airbase and runway hits, and likely another 6 B-17s damaged. The Allies probably only have six or so undamaged B-17s there and runway damage and airbase damage should prevent offensive strikes and repair.

A landing force that has 40 floatplanes as CAP will land at Cagayan tomorrow with Kure 1st SNLF, II/81st Nav Guard, two JNAF companies and a naval construction battalion (total 89 AV). Cagayan will be a major IJNAF base – we will move 21st Air Flotilla here later along with a JNAF AF Unit – ultimately with 76 aviation support and 28 engineers total (to repair the airbase quickly).

Davao will be an IJA operation initially – Miura Detachment along with 146th Inf Rgt (160 AV) will assault it, from where they will advance on Malaybalay. Davao’s port will be built up – I will later send 3rd Base Force and 3rd Port Unit (45 naval support). Kure 1nd SNLF will assault Dumanquilas and Kure 2nd SNLF Oroquieta, thereby blocking off any flow of supplies from Zamboanga.

MALAYA

Kota Bharu:
We launch a massive ground bombing campaign on enemy dispositions at Kota Bharu. With a high detection level thanks to extensive recon, 156 Japanese level bombers cause 556 casualties. The pre-invasion bombardment later results in a further fifteen squads disabled. Total British ground losses at Kota Bharu for the day total as follows:

Squads: 2 destroyed, 30 disabled
Non-Combat: 1 destroyed, 40 disabled
Engineers: 2 disabled

By morning we will have 13,000 troops ashore at Kota Bharu and will shock attack. Allied level bomber counter-attacks against shipping off Kota Bharu sees seven Hudsons and five Blenheims claimed shot down for the loss of three Oscars. A raid on Patani sees two Blenheim IVs shot down by Nates there. So far my Nate jocks have shot down six planes. Banzai!

Just under 9,000 troops are ashore at Patani, with another 20,000 waiting to disembark. 3,000 troops are ashore at Singora.

The Imperial Guards Division and 14th Tank Rgt will strategic move from Battambang to Singora. Once there, they will advance along with the 1st Tank Rgt and 5th Engr Rgt on Alor Star (540 AV total). They will later be joined by three independent engineer regiments and three artillery regiments (an additional 27 AV), who should land at Singora on 12 December.

A major advance will take place from Patani using the good road leading towards Taiping. 25th Army HQ will lead 11th Infantry Rgt, 21st Infantry Rgt, 41st Infantry Rgt, 42nd Infantry Rgt, 5th FA Rgt and 5th Recon Rgt (550 AV total). Hopefully they will move with sufficient speed in order to capture Taiping in time to cut off the two Indian brigades at Alor Star.

From Kota Bharu, 55th Infantry Rgt and 56th Infantry Rgt (250 AV) will advance via the railroad track towards Temuloh. Once Kota Bharu has been secured, four JAAF AF Bns will be railed in and the 3rd Air Division will be shipped there. Also on its way is another JAAF AF Bn, three construction companies, 22nd Recon Rgt (37 AV) and 18th Mtn Gun Rgt. Kota Bharu will be a major IJAAF base in Malaya and will be built up to Level 6 and will eventually have 96 aviation support.

Much later (around Christmas Day) with decent air cover there will be an invasion of Mersing with 113th Infantry Rgt, 148th Infantry Rgt, 6th Tank Rgt , 56th Recon Rgt , 56th Engineer Rgt and 56th FA Rgt (56th Div(-), 375 AV). This will be followed up by a reinforcement 4th Infantry Rgt, 2nd Engr Rgt, 2nd FA Rgt and 2nd Recon Rgt (210 AV). Another follow-up will be 16th Infantry Rgt and 24th Infantry Rgt (250 AV) fully prepped for Singapore.

Hong Kong:
63 level bombers attack Hong Kong’s airfield, destroying a Vildebeest III and a Walrus II, and probably damaging two more Walrus’s. Repairs to the airfield damage should prevent fortifications progressing at Hong Kong.

Singkawang:
91st Naval Guard covered by a heavy surface combat force is already ashore with 58 AV and will attack tomorrow. A follow-up wave with 11th Special Base Force and 18th JNAF AF Unit will land here in three days’ time. Later, 22nd Air Flotilla will be sent here, and Singkawang will be improved to a Level 4 naval air base (with 72 aviation support) and be used to suppress Singapore.

I’ve laid a minefield at Singkawang and the surface combat group has retired to loiter two hexes away, covered by Zero LRCAP with orders to react to any Allied surface encroachment. They are sufficiently far away enough that stringbags from Singapore will not be able to carry torpedoes against them.

Late in the afternoon torpedo-armed Betties decide to launch an unescorted raid on Force Z which is loitering just outside Singapore. The Betties are absolutely slaughtered by the Buffalo CAP (I lose 17) but there is a silver lining – two torpedoes hit BC Repulse, one of them causing *Critical Damage* and heavy engine damage. The traumatised Betty pilots claim BC Repulse as sunk, but I know the poor buggers are over-ambitious, but at least Repulse will no longer be much of a factor in my immediate short-term planning.

I assigned almost every single one of the over 900 Japanese cargo ships to either convoy duties, conversion, or moving them to where I want them.

On Turn 1 I had 360 task forces.

I will also be setting up a fast amphibious group - approximately 900 AV (two divisions and two tank regiments) able to be deployed at 17 knots.

Status: offline 		The most important short-term goals are acquiring sufficiently large ports close enough to the Dutch East Indies, where the vast majority of action will take place in the next few months.

As such, Hong Kong needs to be captured and its port cleared of mines as soon as possible. To expedite this process, in addition to the usual troops attacking Hong Kong, I have detached the 66th and 67th Infantry Battalions from Canton to assist in the attack. Along with 68th Infantry Bn they will later form the Hong Kong Defence Force, which will be the garrison.

Singapore has to be captured quickly and I will be following a very aggressive timetable in Malaya.

Status: offline 		The sheer scope of DaBigBabes has meant that it has taken my opponent quite a while to finish his first/second turn. From here on in we should be doing daily turns.

OPENING MOVES:
 
Batan Island is occupied by an IJA air battalion. I will stage Nates there to provide LRCAP over invasion beaches in Northern Luzon. Interestingly, the Philippine Mosquito Fleet and US PT-boats attempt to sortie out of Manila - but three of them hit mines recently laid by one of my subs off Bataan. If this information is correct, the US PT-boat force in Luzon has just decreased by a third.

British minesweepers clean the minefields I've laid outside Singapore. It later becomes clear that Force Z (less BC Repulse, I assume she's in port at Singapore) is running south, presumably to Java. My naval search is also reporting a number of ships at Singapore, including an xAP - might my opponent be planning to evacuate Malaya?

My Vigan invasion amphibious group's surface combat escort tangles with two British DDs out of Hong Kong at night. CL Naka takes two 4" shells, but HMS Thanet is sunk by a torpedo and HMS Scout will probably be finished off in the next day or two; the damaged DD is sighted by a Nell the next day limping back to Hong Kong at 7 knots. A destroyer task force off Iba sinks a British freighter. My sub that lay a minefield off Bataan attacks an American yard oiler, setting it on fire. Many ships are reported by naval search in the vicinity of Iba, I have a number of surface combat groups (consisting of about four DDs each) ready to be vectored onto any Allied shipping sighted by my search aircraft.

Another four DD surface combat task force of mine runs into five  British freighters at dawn trying to escape from Hong Kong, and sinks all five. The same TF then runs into another three British freighters, and sink them too. They are then surprised by the third destroyer out of Hong Kong, HMS Thracian, but in low visibility due to rain no hits are scored and the Japanese task force disengages. DM Thracian appears to continue SW towards the Philippines.

It later also becomes apparent that the four MTBs from Hong Kong are making a run for the Philippines when they are unsuccessfully attacked by Nells out of Formosa.

More ominously - it also looks like his entire Philippine submarine force is heading north, in the direction of Formosa.

PHILIPPINES:

The fighter jocks from 3rd Ku S-1 launch a highly successful fighter sweep against Manila. 63 Betties with massive escort then bombs Manila harbour, in the hope of catching some US ships in port, but score no hits on any ships but claim a dozen bomb hits on the port facilities. No fighter opposition is up at Iba or Clark Field; 34 IJAAF bombers perform another run on Clark Field, scoring another 7 runway and 2 airbase hits.

My Zero pilots claim 20 P-40Es shot down for the day with no loss. All in all, I can't imagine that he has very much of a fighter force left in Luzon - a lot of P-40Bs at Clark Field are damaged.

My SNLF takes Puerto Princesa, destroying three Kingfishers on the ground there. I've disbanded an AV there and its six Petes will provide naval search.

My Cagayan invasion troops go ashore, and will attack tomorrow. Substantial units will land at Aparri tomorrow under air cover and with extensive ASW escort.

CL Boise is spotted by a Mavis out of Babeldaob near Talaud-eilanden heading SW. My thinking is that my opponent is trying to reform considerable ABDA naval forces in Java.

Two seemingly juicy targets are spotted just south of Mindanao, within range of Kates on CVL Ryujo - reported amongst the two convoys are a TK, xAKs and xAKLs. We'll try to engage them tomorrow.

MALAYA

After biting my nails waiting for my opponent's response, I'm a bit surprised that absolutely no airstrikes are launched from Malayan bases against any of my invasion forces. I was also concerned that Force Z would be deployed against my rather aggressive invasion of Singkawang. Ultimately, there was no response and it appears that my opponent is going to be withdrawing naval and air assets to the south, probably Java, to combine with Dutch forces there. HMS Repulse is likely sitting in port at Singapore.

Two of my submarines encounter Force Z (HMS Prince of Wales, CL Danae, DD Vampire, DD Vendetta)  near Toboali on its way south but score no hits, I'll keep dogging them with those two submarines in the hope of disabling the battleship.

My deliberate attack at Singkawang is successful. Interestingly the West Borneo KNIL Bn surrenders, with the Singkawang Base Force retreating! I'll have about 36 aviation support landing here by 10 December and will then have Zeroes based out of here.

There is another massive aerial bombardment of the Indian and Malayan troops at Kota Bharu, and a shock attack results in the 3rd ISF Base Force surrendering and the FMSV Bde and 8th Indian Bde retreating towards Temuloh along the railroad track. They can't have very much left in the way of combat efficiency and are probably heavily disrupted, though - over the course of the last two days the British troops at Kota Bharu have had 132 combat squads, 104 non-combat squads, 17 engineer squads and 18 guns destroyed (apparently).

The runway at Kota Bharu will be repaired as soon as possible and aviation support railed in from Thailand.

I can only assume that this is a combination of (1) superior pilots, (2) altitude advantage, and (3) superior numbers at all times (at all times the Zeroes maintained a ratio above 1.5:1).

Yeah, I confess that for me this is the main (masochistic) appeal of the scenario. I think it'll mean some real constraints on Japan.

My Allied subs are sinking 2-3 ships a day in 1944, but my opponent says that while this loss is causing a noticeable effect it's not that major. I dont think it's possible for the sub war to be decisive in stock. In this though, I think it could be extremely vicious and difficult to manage as Japan from '43 on.

I don't think I'm quite brave enough to play PDU off though I must admit.

That being said I'll have to find ways to be creative with all those Nate squadrons I'll be forced to keep

I'm still trying to decide whether having the uninterrupted road and rail connection from Singapore to Fusan to carry resources and oil accurately reflects the historical capacity of that connection.

According to the manual, supply, fuel, resources and oil stockpiles can all be moved automatically between bases via an overland route if the two bases are linked by a valid supply path, but that some of the items being automatically moved are expended during the transfer (but never more than 20% will be expended).

Now what I'm thinking is that this probably ties in with supply route cost. You start with a baseline of 100, and obviously each hex then has a supply cost depending on terrain and road connection.

I'm assuming that the cap of 20% applies where your supply route is strained to maximum (i.e. the overland transportation route's value is 10).

There would then be a linear progression in the percentage stockpile expended, e.g. 1% if the route value is 99, to 10% if the route value is 55, to 20% if the route value is 10.

From what I can see, the portions in this Singapore-Fusan route that would have the highest supply cost are between Pnomh Penh and Saigon, Lang Son and Nanning, and Changsha to Wuchang. As an example there are three hexes on the road between Lang Son and Nanning which is connected by a main road - the supply cost of this connection is therefore 9.

Simplistically I'm assuming then that between Lang Son and Nanning, if I were to attempt to shift 10,000 oil, I would lose 2%, or 200 oil.

I might need to analyse the entire route to see what total expenditure over the entire route might be but on the face of it it appears that it could be more cost-effective than having to haul oil with tankers from Singapore to Japan. It will hopefully save a lot of fuel.

Status: offline 		Utilising my assumption described in the post above, I've looked at the route from Magwe to Singapore.

Many JFBs know that oil from Magwe will automatically be pulled all the way to Singapore.

If my thinking on this is correct, I've calculated that if 1,000 oil is sent by Magwe all along the shortest (in terms of supply cost) route - all of 4,000 miles - then only 805 of that oil will end up in Singapore.

I am going to try and calculate a similar expected expenditure over the anticipated Singapore-Fusan overland route.

Status: offline 		Nice.  I wish I could tell you that nothing can slip through, but ...  I've had search patterns like that and still had the Houston slip through.  Some of it I know is the NavSearch skill of a lot of my pilots.  Early war, there is a real deficit in that skill.  And also, as the range goes up, the probability of a contact goes down. 

Anyway, you've got as good as you can setup.  I just wouldn't say it was impenetrable.  I've had way too many experience contrary to that expectation.

Status: offline 		In this round I made quite a few mistakes...and my opponent made them count.

INITIAL MOVEMENTS:

CVL Ruyjo runs into a burning freighter (set on fire by the naval bombardment of Cagayan) but does not engage. I had sent the surface force that had bombarded Cagayan to hunt for escaping Allied ships, but had forgotten that even though the CAs and the CL had about 60% of its main gun ammunition, that the DDs did not...and as a result (frustratingly!) my task force disengaged time after time against juicy pickings...

A large group of merchantmen, tankers and support vessels, escorted by four US DDs, are intercepted near Puerto Princesa, where my two destroyers score a few shell hits. Out of ammunition, my two destroyers withdraw when they encounter AVP Heron.

A submarine scores a hit on a transport near Tawi Tawi, and later scores a further hit on a freighter.

Then...the dreaded CL Boise makes an appearance, engaging CVL Ryujo and her seven DD escorts. Initially, Ruyjo scores a hit on Boise and the task forces break off. But Boise re-intercepts and in this battle manages to make her presence felt before she is in turn sunk - CVL Ruyjo is heavily damaged and DD Shiokaze sinks.

I had hoped to save Ruyjo, but sadly she sinks at sea. It is a loss I will have to live with.

My Zeroes continue sweeping Manila, Iba and Clark Field, and inflict one-sided losses on the American fighters. Clark Field is once again bombed. More troops go ashore at Aparri and Vigan.

MALAYA

I sweep Singapore with 18x Zeroes who encounter a very strong CAP (33 aircraft) but perform exceptionally well in claiming around 10 Buffaloes for no loss.

97x two-engine bombers perform ground attacks on Alor Star. I have a 450 AV force moving to cut off the Commonwealth troops there from Taiping. The idea is that bombing them will hopefully slow them down and cause some disruption.

There are some ineffectual naval attacks by British aircraft on my shipping at Singkawang.

Cagayan falls to our first deliberate attack. We have destroyed a very large number of Non Combat squads - i.e. the Force Mindanao Corps HQ - which should result in support issues for his troops remaining on Mindanao.

Ouch! That is a hurting thing this early in the DEI area. Sorry. This will make certain airfields like Singkawang, Ambon, Kendari, Jolo, and Balikpapan that much more critical.

Singkawang is already secured and should be a level 4 airbase with 72 aviation support in the next day or two.

I am currently busy with an interesting sortie from that base...we'll see how it has panned out once I get the turn back.

Cagayan is also already secured, but needs extensive repairs to the airbase and runway. Jolo will be secured soon.

Ambon, Kendari and Balikpapan are out of the scope at the moment. Manado should be secured in the next five days.

INITIAL MOVEMENTS:

I-164 sees the Dutch sub K.18 travelling on the surface at night near Ketapang, but her two torpedoes miss. The minefield a sub of mine lay between Borneo and the island of Tawi Tawi must have paid off since my opponent sends six AMs to sweep it. I rectified my heavy force from Cagayan by stripping out the DDs that were low on ammo and this pays off - they set DD Alden and DD John D. Edwards on fire during an encounter with four US DDs, and sink TK Manatawny, xAP Elcano and xAK Ravnaas near Tawi Tawi on their way south.

The interesting thing here is that my opponent committed CL Marblehead and all the US destroyers that started at Balikpapan and Tarakan to the Sulu Sea as opposed to running for Java.

A four-DD surface group of mine then runs into the same US destroyer group - end result is all four are damaged (with three on fire), and presumed to be heading for Tarakan. The same four-DD surface group then runs into xAK Governor Wright, the sole survivor of the US freighter group that my cruiser force ran through earlier, and sinks her. To end their night, my DD SAG runs into the US AMs sweeping off Tawi Tawi and causes consternation, sinking AM Tanager, AM Lark, PG Asheville and PG Tulsa, and damaging various others. A Dutch sub then tries to torpedo DD Natsushio unsuccessfully, while the other three DDs then sinks a light freighter and damages another. They try to engage another light freighter but near Tapul but can't close.

DD Kuroshio, DD Natsushio, DD Hayashio and DD Amatsukaze have the following scorecard for the night of 9/10 December 1941 (in rain with maximum visibility varying between 2,000 and 6,000 yards):

2x AM, 2x PG, xAK and xAKL sunk
2x DD, 3x AM, 1x PG, xAKL damaged
54 shell hits total, 2 torpedo hits

My minelaying sub off of Luzon sinks a light freighter near Lubang. The Dutch sub K.13 tries to attack a convoy near Soc Trang and is heavily punished by ASW, with six hits claimed (the Dutch sub is also later claimed as sunk).

Dawn breaks, and after my successful devastation of his sweeper force near Tawi Tawi, he sends another sweeper force consisting of DD Peary and AVD Childs. These two ships were part of the larger force that left Manila trying to exit the Sulu Sea via Balabac but then diverted southwards and appear to be trying to run for Tarakan or Balikpapan. I imagine he is trying to run the bulk of this force (including support ships like AS Otus, AS Holland and AS Canopus) via the gap between Tawi Tawi and Borneo shortly.

In clear conditions my light surface group covering Vigan runs into eight MTBs off Luzon - these British MTBs were sent from Hong Kong. Only two remain floating.

PHILIPPINES
 
Iba is swept again, but is clear. We again bomb Clark Field, destroying a P-40B and a P-35A and damaging some other aircraft. It is becoming clear from recon that my opponent is setting up his Luzon defensive position at Clark Field, with over 50,000 troops spotted there. Hopefully the heavy airfield damage has prevented high levels of fortifications being built and is sucking up high levels of supply.

For now I am content to sit at Aparri and Vigan building up those airfields to at least size 4 to sustain a long-term siege Clark Field/Bataan.

Kimura Detachment lands at Legaspi in south Luzon.

Cagayan's runway is taking a long time to repair.

MANILA
 
We conduct another ground bombing run on Commonwealth ground troops at Alor Star, trying to disrupt them and prevent them moving to the south. I have a 450 AV force - including 25th Army HQ - about two or three days away from cutting off Alor Star from Georgetown and Taiping. Here's hoping! If they get there in time, more than 200 Commonwealth AV will be prevented from heading south and will be engaged by the Imperial Guards Division and two tank regiments from Singora.

Kota Bharu's runway is almost repaired and in two days time I'll have more than 100 aviation support there.

INITIAL MOVEMENTS:
 
An Ehime-class xAK returning from Singkawang is sunk by a Dutch sub.

I have sent a fully-armed cruiser force (CA Maya, CA Ashigara, CL Kuma and 4x DDs) to make a run south through the Sulu Sea and into the Celebes Sea to try to run into escaping US warships. They first run into and sink three light freighters, then they encounter CL Marblehead and five US DDs.

CL Marblehead is hit eight times - a number of hits were critical, with some apparently carrying off upperworks and causing severe casualties to damage control parties - and set on fire. I'm pretty sure she's a cripple. DD Bulmer and DD Parrott are also set on fire. They later also sink a yard oiler.

Even though CA Maya is set on fire, the damage is not as great as reported and by dawn all fires are put out. She has 23 Sys and 17 Flo damage.

My highly successful sub lurking at Tawi Tawi sinks a small tanker.

My opponent has around nine submarines (sighted) in the waters around Formosa. My aircraft are reporting around twenty or so contacts per hex! Seven ASW attacks are conducted by my surface forces in the area, with no hits reported.

Much further away, Guam and Wake Island are bombarded.

When day breaks, my sharpshooter force (CL Naka with five DDs) surprises six Allied PT boats near Iba and sinks PT-41! This means my opponent now has only two MTBs and five PT-boats left (having lost six MTBs and four PT-boats).

Another Ehime-class freighter is sunk - this time near Cam Ranh Bay - by a US submarine.

One of my blocker force submarines sitting off Bandjermasin on its way into the Makassar Strait puts another torpedo into xAP Rochambeau (she was torpedoed earlier off Tawi Tawi) and sinks her.

MALAYA:
 
Alor Star appears to have suddenly emptied overnight - it might well be that my opponent managed to put all his forces into strategic mode and rail them south. Extensive recon will be carried out tomorrow to try to confirm his troop dispositions.

PHILIPPINES:
 
Iba is again clear of CAP. Clark Field is again bombed (and now I am certain that this is going to be his Alamo). Legaspi is captured.

A Kasu D carrying elements of an artillery regiment is torpedoed off of Luzon.

HONG KONG:
 
My first deliberate attack does not achieve 1:1 odds - but 1:2 instead. This could be a long battle of attrition, but I can afford the losses better than he can.

SOUTH PACIFIC:
 
Wake Island is captured!

My forces land on Guam, and will attack tomorrow.

US carrier aircraft attack two AMC raiders on their way back to Truk near Enderbury Island, and sink one (the second will sink too)...judging by their course they are heading for the Marshalls...forces have been put on alert and I have dispatched six submarines to try to lie in wait!

I am getting around 80 submarine contacts a day in this area.

CVE Hosho has been converted to a dedicated ASW platform - she is carrying eighteen B4Y1 Jeans.

Yes, Jeans.

Why? Well, the Jean has an alright normal range of 6. However, being a biplane, it has great maneuverability and most importantly, even at extended range, carries two 250kg GP bombs (which will do a real number on an Allied sub). My pilots aboard currently have an average ASW skill of around 40, and are training this skill intensively.

The idea is for CVE Hosho with its eighteen ASW experts in Jeans (of which I have 61 in the pool and have to use somehow) to operate along with a very strong ASW screen (at this stage the thinking is eight of the Ch-13 Class SC's that have four depth charge racks each for a total of 32 ASW).

This dedicated ASW Air TF would then operate under the cover of usual land-based search aircraft, and move into any areas with high concentrations of Allied subs, and, hopefully, sink some subs.
