Are you sending any supply to China from the Home Islands? I found sending 50k-100k supply periodically to China during an offensive allowed for sustained operations without losing any momentum to shortages. If you are not, I'd highly recommend you do so. I've been trying to send some, but not quite enough it seems. Just these last few turns I've been delaying other convoys and building some up for a massive push. 20,000 just went in to Shanghai, but in a few days I'll send in the same amount or more to virtually every port above size 3 and see if that does it.

Port Arthur has normal supply of about 15,000 but massive oil and fuel reserves. I've got Fusan working for resources though and so don't use Port Arthur much at all now.

subs: SS Seal sends 4 torps at our ASW near Pontiniak. DMS W-11 and SC CH 27 avoid the fish but then lose the sub. Several subs seem to operating in this area between Palembang, Sinkawang and Singapore.

We've got 4 separate ASW surface groups here and good air ASW at several bases in range. This should mean we bag a sub or two in the shallow water soon.

O-16 appears again near Balikpapan and bottoms out but DD Hishu can't locate it.

China: We get enough supply for a bombardment today. The results are not bad at all. Our AV is about 2.5 - 1 over the Chinese. We give them double the losses in the attack, including destroying a few guns. This is usually a good sign in my experience, and we'll go for a DA when supply comes back up. Right now it's looking about a 1/3 down for every unit.

In the air we take a stab at the 22 fighters listed at Chunking, seeing if we can hit a CAF group training. 34 Oscar fly over, but all they can do is wave.

I wish there was a setting where a sweep would work as it's supposed to work. Fly in, if nothing is up, then put a bunch of holes in the planes while they sit on the field, just like in the movies.

Elsewhere catching up on the bombing campaign.

DEI: At Bandjermasin the Allied bombardment results in 1 squad destroyed for them and shows we have over a 2 to 1 advantage. We need more supply so must wait for a shipment before taking this base.

Nells based in Balikpapan begin to finish off Dutch and British troops around Borneo. The 3 units near Pontiniak get nuked after just three days of bombing. I guess they shouldn't have come out into the clear and pitched a tent.

Burma: The 1st and the 14th Tank Rgts shock 1 hex west of Schwebo and maul the BFF Brigade and a base force again.

subs: SS Seal is found this time by the sharp eyed DMS W-11 and SC Ch 27 near Munuk. No attack again however. SS Silversides found TB Otori but missed with 2 torps.

Near Perth DDs Electra, Norman and Jupiter hit I-155 twice with non-penetrating DCs and it's left with 11 sys and 2 float damage.

China: Bombing shifts to taking out troops at Liuchow. As this is a clear hex they crumble easily disabling nearly 100 squads again. Not enough supply for anything at Lanchow.

Burma: Base forces are arriving everywhere and Oscars are getting ready to fill in. Troops are arriving in Lashio on the rail lines now. No bombing yet attempted at Magwe.

subs: My heart was in my throat for this one. Akagi appeared again way too early in the replay getting sighted up by SS Tuna this time. The sub launched 6 fish and scored at least one hit that failed to explode. Whew! After taking two torps already and sitting in Yokohama for two months we need to get these sailors into the war before they get too comfy eating home cooking and sleeping with their geishas.

Just after the first salvo Tuna tried again, this time the DDs screened the 4 shots which all missed.

An escort of one of our TK convoys sights SS Spearfish, but does not drop any hits on her. Our TK was spotted, so this route might need to shift.

DD Hishu finally gets a hit on KVIII but it's not penetrating and she'll probably just hang around.

DEI: Supply has landed at Bandjermasin. We'll attack tomorrow.

Still waiting on the arrival of the big base force at Batavia.

China: Still not enough to go at Lanchow. Our transports are unloading all over China, hoping to flood the system with supply and make sure it gets everywhere we need it.

Burma: Magwe comes over to our side without an attack and the troops getting out of strat are heading over as quickly as possible. In the meantime, over 100 Oscars plus 70 A6Ms are in the area. Lots of AA is one the way.

subs: Another sub, Seal, spotted and attacked near Singkawang. No hits.

I-164 attacked AK Aroona near Colombo, but misses with two torps. Strange we've had so many misses with our subs this game. Usually I expect when an IJN sub lines up an unescorted transport she's going down 80-90% of the time. It's been more like 50-60% this game, and we've even had a significant number of duds.

So Pac: B-17s hit Noumea today. This is a long flight for them, 16 hexes at least, so since nothing critical is here now we'll trade a bit of field damage for those ops losses that will come. 1 today.

So Pac is quiet, but Lord Howe Island is being reconned. I bet this will lead to an invasion as we have nothing there now. We're waiting for some of the small AF Coy to become free from the DEI before stage two of the So Pac plan takes shape. This is to have these units at a central location, like noumea, and fly them in to distant island bases to then support search and recon for a few days before being flown back out. Our subs just can't locate any supply lines and we need to make use of them better. It will also give opportunities for advanced warning of Allied buildups and advances.

Wallace Island, Lord Howe, and Raoul are prime targets for this activity. I'd like to acquire a few more to keep things a bit mysterious and unsettled down here. Niue looks promising, as do Pukapuka and Flint Is.

The KB has regrouped and will now carefully move to Tulagi. Lots of subs appearing, but we do have good search and ASW in place.

DEI: Our base force has significantly imroved the situation at Batavia. All units went green for support, and disabled squads are healing up quickly now. Tomorrow we'll try again here. Fingers crossed.

Interesting, our attack at Bandjermasin came out terribly. A 1 to 7! but only one squad disabled and disruption in the teens. Nells will try to loosen up the resistance.

Burma: We had a small surprise for the 48 fighters that had been based in Akyab, but it's possible they sighted our bombardment TF on it's way there. We put a good hit on the port and fields with several CAs nontheless, and fires are still burning.

subs: O-16 hits Daigen Maru in the night, and puts one torpedo in her. If that wasn't enough, which it most likely was, she popped up again in the day and hit her with another. Under the waves there is now a brand new reef that would one day become a great diving spot.

S-39 attacks another convoy near Shortlands twice and gets one hit on Genoa Maru, which is carrying part of a base force.

DEI: JAPANESE FORCES CAPTURE BATAVIA! I know. It isn't that big of a deal, but feels pretty good to get it done. Also, I learned some key information about how this ground combat game works. While airpower helps, support, HQs and supply are key.

These forces will now move to surround and kill off the remnants of the Dutch. Then move to do the same in Tilityap. Then North OZ. Originally I was going to send them back to the PI to help finish that off, but as the AV there continues to drop for the Allies, I think it's now not necessary.

subs: Between 1-3 reports a day now of subs being attacked and hit. This is significantly higher than a few months ago when even more subs were densely congregated around our ASW air search areas. I know the crews are getting better, so I assume some of these are actual hits. Most IJA ASW is still using Lilys, so these won't kill a sub most likely, but could possibly send it home for a while.

China: Finally there is enough supply to DA at Lanchow. Here we go. Bettys have been hitting it hard for days. Hopefully things are softened up by now and supplies are getting low.

DEI: Nells bombing Badjermasin certainly seem to be softening resistance there. 15 combat squads were disabled today, plus 17 support destroyed and 34 disabled. We'll DA tomorrow.

No Pac: The Air HQ (range 1) arrived at Yunaska today. All surrounding bases are building. In less than a month this should be thoroughly ready for active defense. 1 recon unit is preparing to move into the are to scout and keep an eye on Kodiak.

Burma: Troops have made it to Lashio and a base force is installed supporting a group of Oscars and recon. A tank brigade is moving up the road to close off the Burma road now. This should hurt China as much as any bombing we're doing there.

Today many of our long term plans begin coming to fruition.

subs: 2 more reported hits on subs by Lilys. Also, our wounded nearly sunk sub (forgetting the number) returns from it's long journey from the Indian coast and limps into Singapore to be patched up. I'm happy my opponent will get one of those reports stating the sub was falsely reported sunk. I've already had about 4 of those.

Today O-16 is sighted again but 3 DDs can't track it down to attack.

DEI: We're walking over to eliminate the last of the Batavia Dutch troops.

A base force has been brought to Koepang and Nells and zeros are transferring there to hit Darwin. C5M2s are in Dili now doing some recon there. A small group of 12 Oscars is heading to Saumlaki (which just made a level 2 field) to sweep ahead of the bombing raids.

No Pac: A few more Naval Guard units are heading out to the Aleutians. To start we're putting one guard unit and a base force onto about 8 of the islands. 2 more Guard units will be placed on strategic islands we don't plan to build up. A mobile reserve in Adak will begin with a Rgt from Manchuria due to be bought by June and might grow depending on Allied interest in this or other areas.

Several training squadrons can be brought out here as many of the islands are within the General Defense command structure. We'll have 45 Nells moving out soon as well as a full 45 plane zero group and several smaller fighter groups as well as Kates and Vals. If the Allies do come this way, they may find more than they are expecting, and hopefully will bring a lot of ships. Shoho plus a strong surface combat TF will remain in the area. In the event of a large concentration of Allied forces attacking in So Pac, these forces would be used to raid supply lines and support further small harassment invasions of bases in Alaska.

The entire philosophy of this invasion and occupation is not to keep these islands for a long period, but to use them to slow Allied advances and to bleed their forces when they come. If our units are destroyed they will be bought back and placed on the Kuriles for the next year's defense plan. Those bases are being extensively built, but only Paramushiro, Onneketan, and Uruppa-Jimas are being garrisoned with combat troops and air forces at this stage.

Burma: The road to China is closed! This should mean 15,000 or so less supplies per month trickling into China.

China: A long term plan to invade the 3 southern bases in China is now coming to its climax.

Over the last months since the invasion of Singapore our forces used there have been resting and preparing for southern China. This while my opponent has sent several emails mentioning his wonder at where these forces will strike next. In these he seemed to imply he was thinking they would move to a far-flung location like India, New Zealand, or E Australia. Instead, after spending most of the first months of the war solidifying middle and SE China as well as pushing far north to Sian and then Lanchow, we will now attack in force across a broad area of Central to Southern China.

2,700 AV plus the Southern Army HQ will move into Nanning tomorrow, shocking across the river. A smaller force of 1,000 AV moving north from Wuchow will simultaneously move into Kweilin, cutting the rail from the center where most of the Chinese force is concentrated. For several days previously we have been employing two feints in Central China. 1,600 AV have been showing movement into Changsha for 4 days already, but have not actually been moving into the city. Just to the south, one hex below Changsha another 1,700 AV have been sitting on the rail line showing movement into Henyang, trying to freeze the 12 units in that city as well. As Chinese recon is not stellar, I'm sure my opponent does not know the exact strength of these forces.

So far nothing has moved to support the southern cities, and in fact units have begun to move out of both Nanning and Kweilin toward Liuchow. The Allies have had a tendency to evacuate when under pressure rather than fighting, so this could be the case again.

If we achieve the primary goal of winning these three southern cities, we will then begin to actually move both central forces into Changsha and turn all bombing onto that city. In the south we will solidify our rear with about 1,000 AV and move on Henyang with 2,600 to attempt to open the entire rail line. As this coincides with our closing of the Burma Road, it should be hard for the Chinese to mount a counter offensive. They have A LOT of units in the central cities, about 50 altogether, which should be quite a supply drain already. If they do move out of Changsha and come for us toward Wuchang or Nanchang, which is the fear, we will move back into our forts and fill from the rear with our reserve.

It can't be fun to have all of that stuff in China and no means to use it early on in the war. I have no idea what his supply situation is but I certainly didn't notice many shipments coming through Rangoon early, which means it probably isn't very good.

It's not a lot of fun trying to just not lose China in his situation. I can understand that he might have a bit of hopelessness about the area. Well, we are in negotiation about some of the house rules. A bit more on that as I catch up a little, which I've been saying forever, but will actually happen this week.

Jocke had been off work sick for more than a week which let us do 2-3 turns a day! Back to the normal schedule now.

In my eagerness to post a map I neglected an important event form yesterday.

China: Lanchow falls! After waiting many days for supply to top up our first attack crushed all resistence. This will hurt as the southern forces also move in and show their cards simultaneously.More than three months of Chinese replacements wiped out.

Even better is that all facilities are at 100%. This should also take away fuel from the rest of the Chinese economy, which might just wither and stop producing HI after a month or two.

subs: O-16 again is spotted and again slips away from our DDs. This sub's luck will run out soon I think.

China: After our victory in the north yesterday troops rested there before moving north for our last goal, Sining with its many resources. We'll split the army and let some units heal in Lanchow while 5 Divisions and armor move up the road.

In the south our army moves into Nanning over the river, shocks, and takes the city which had only just been vacated by Chinese troops. On to Liuchow.

At Kweilin our smaller army moves in as the two Chinese units here attempt to leave as well. We'll attack tomorrow but I'm sure they'll be out of the city by then.

Bombers mercilessly attack units in the clear hex at Liuchow, inflicting over 800 casualties and even some destroyed squads.

DEI: Mop up continues with the capture of Bandjermasin. Only lost one point off of the resources. Units retreat up the road. Our SNLF will pursue hoping to force this and other units there up the road toward the one clear hex so they can be pounded from the air.

Nells and Betties have been adding to the clean up since Batavia fell by bombing out stragglers near Pontiniak and near Jesselton. Both spots are nearly wiped out now.

Clean up of Batavia troops continues today, with over 200 squads destroyed one hex E of Batavia. Still more left, however.

Burma: Bombers attack Paoshan hitting the 33rd and 88th Chinese Divisions. Recon shows only 7,100 troops here so these must be some of the small divisions that start on the Burma side. Not taking many squads off of them, so maybe forts have been built up here.

subs: Our subs in the North Atlantic are in position, roaming the waters for the summer until the threat of counter-invasion lessens with the coming of winter. Subs are also all across the bottom of the map, searching. Still no sign of any convoy routes.

China: Massive losses from airial bombardment of Liuchow make me think the 12 units here are moving into strat mode to get out of dodge. Almost 2,000 casualties on the day from air attacks.

DEI: Troops have taken the whole of W Sumatra other than Benkolen now. This has 4 units and will be bombed by Sallys from Palembang. A few straggling Dutch units from the Medan area are also in the wilds. They're next on the elimination chart.

PI: At Luzon AV is now down to 1118. The Brigade hitting islands is moving back to Luzon to take part in the final attack on the fortress. We'll begin when the AV hits around 950.

House Rules: After the realization of what was happening in China Jocke informed me that he was feeling pretty down about it all, and that he thinks his whole position may crumble soon due to supply issues in China. He was amazed and disheartened by the seeming ease of supply transport for the IJA in deep north China. His troops apparently began going into the red once they hit the mountains near Lanchow, and never recovered. I had to tell him how much we were pouring into Shanghai and other ports to help him realize this wasn't unusually one-sided supply movement.

He also said he was opening a thread in the War Room to get advice on China and to think about the next steps in case it was completely lost, including a revision of our house rules on restricted units crossing borders and PPs. More on this once he gets some feedback and suggestions and while I have a think about what's fair in this situation. (As stated before, the AAR is a bit behind, and that thread has been up for over a week).

I'm incredibly sympathetic and know how hard China can be early on for the Allies, especially if it becomes the main focus for Japanese land forces and air power, as it has been from December in this game. Still, I don't want to agree to something that will limit the result of the emphasis I've put on this theatre, so it will be a hard decision about how much to allow for movement of Chinese units out of China and other (Indian specifically) units into China. Also, the question will certainly come up as to how much should Chinese units be allowed to fight outside of China if I do agree to them being able to cross borders without the PP payment?

All of this is of course subject to the continued success of Japanese forces in China. There is a long way to go, and some of the best Chinese defensive terrain is between our forces and the Chunking area, and then of course there is Chunking itself with its forts and good urban defensive bonus. But if it will ease Jocke's mind and help us continue to have a good relationship and have fun with this game, then we will negotiate.

We sent our main surface battle fleet in the DEI from Babeldaob to Soerabaja in anticipation of the need to use them around N OZ soon. 3 BB and 3 CA are in this TF. They ran over SS Salmon near Macassar but the sub missed a DD with a four shot spread. No DCing.

China: All of our small southern army have moved into Kweilin now. We'll DA tomorrow.

DEI: Near Batavia the last of the Dutch forces pushed out of the city are destroyed. Now on to Tilityap.

Burma: Two tank Rgts take Katha today easily. A base force and construction unit will rail in from Moulmein. We're aiming to get all of these bases built up before the monsoons kick in. A Thai Division will push on to Meitkyina, which recently had 6 units in it. We haven't reconned lately but will again now to check it out.

At Katha several waves of Hurricane sweeps come in and hit a few wide ranging Oscars from various nearby fields. The combat turns out roughly even for the day, with each side losing 5 planes but a few more ops losses for the Oscars.

Bleinheims came in later to bomb our troops but hit nothing.

DEI: Nells hit the port in Darwin today, likely sinking 3 AMs as well. We're doing great against minesweepers and patrol boats (other than PTs) this game. If only we could find some bigger ships to hit these attacks might mean something. At least there will be less escorts and local ASW for a very short while until the Allied Industrial engine picks up speed.

subs: SS Haddock launches two torps at our ASW PBs near Kuroshima. About 5-6 US subs are now operating near the HI. Half of them are visible each day as they're found by our ASW air patrols, so it's often been easy to go around them. Our first Helen ASW group is almost trained and will be used here soon.

China: A full retreat seems to be starting in Central China! All major cities show units moving back toward Chikiang. This is very unexpected. Our two armies to either side of Changsha have been ordered into the city immediately.

Maybe Jocke has been getting some advice about how to maximize what is here with the amount of supply available, or just made up his mind to consolidate. I have to say I will be pleased if these units are actually all on the move and we can link the rail lines. The thought of 50 units in Chikiang however makes me uneasy. We were hoping to wear some of these down in the conquest of these cities so that the second line of defense later would be weak.

Either way, very interesting developments. More as the actual nature of this move is observed. Recon is over every city in China each day, so we'll know soon.

DEI: Moving lots of units and ships around now to begin to prepare for the next phase for the troops on Java. They are now 2 hexes out of Tilityap, so still a while before this is done. most of our big troop ships and good quick unloading AKs are in Saigon, so we have to get them started now and send some more PBs over there to escort.

Burma: All of the Oscars here, 5 groups of about 180 planes, are set to 50% CAP 20% rest and 10 hex range. The 45 zeros of Tainan group are set to 30% CAP 30% LR CAP (no target) and 20% rest. If Hurricane sweeps come again, virtually anywhere in central Burma, there will be a lot of planes flying around.

subs: I-166 actually ran into a convoy near Goa today. It was sighted by the two DDs escorting at least one AP and couldn't get off an attack.

China: A small unit, the Lusu War Area HQ that starts in the swamp hex near Nanking called Hwaiyin is blithely wandering around the SE of China. We've chosen to ignore it as it can't really block any supply paths at this point. We've now decided to bring in some Sonias to get practice bombing without any real risk and take it to the point where it's losing squads, then stop and let it evaporate. I'd rather it not come back in a month much stronger in Chunking.

Caught up to troops N of Lanchow with a major portion of the army and will DA tomorrow.

Between Liuchow and Kweilin we also tracked down two Chinese units and will attack tomorrow.

DEI: Benkolen and units from Bandjermasin continue to be bombed. Two SNLFs are moving toward Benkolen.

PI: Bacolod fell today. This Island hopping Brigade will return to Luzon to help finish off Bataan now.

So Pac: No change or action by the Allies here that we can see. But, we CAN see into Sydney Harbor today thanks to a rare sigint and recon combo illuminating 17 ships, at least 2 of which appear to be CLs and several more of which might be DDs. AKs and APs also are listed. We're contemplating another raid just to keep the Allies on edge and also to get better recon of the area from close up. Strangely no fighters are listed in the airfields.

We'll make a call on this within a few days.

subs: O-23 was spotted by E Shimishu, which is decidedly not a super E, with only a 1 ASW rating. It couldn't get in position to attack in spite of the shallow water.

China: In addition to the continued movement of forces out of Central China cities, the weak stragglers in the woods, 16 units with about 200-300 AV if they're lucky, are moving toward Loyang from two hexes away down the yellow road. We're sending reinforcements to the area by rail, but there is a concern they might not arrive in time. This base has not built forts since we captured it. A 45 AV engineer unit is now scheduled to go there and a Brigade will be sent to shore up the small garrison of one cavalry unit. A few small Chinese units that were posted watching this Chinese army, keeping them off of our supply lines, will also move down to Nanyang and over to Loyang, but might not get there before the Chinese. Some bombing is being redirected to slow these troops as well.

Near Lanchow we caught up with the northern Chinese army again and DAed for a 1 to 1 attack destroying 466 infantry squads(!) and disabling 132 more.

Between Kweilin and Liuchow our small southern army attacked the units form Kweilin trying to make they're way into Liuchow and got a 13 to 1 attack destroying 96 infantry squads. Unfortunately they retreated north of Liuchow, as our troops have entered that base, so will both escape and block our quick movement up the road to Tuyun once Liuchow is taken.

DEI: Forces continue to move toward Tilityap as the IJN moves to prepare convoys for the next phase of operations. Several fast transport groups will be employed to hit smaller northern bases, but at least two very large convoys with BBs and CAs incorporated will be used to transport the 2 Divisions to Darwin. At least one DMS will be in each, and a little bit of softening will take place through air attacks and bombardments before a landing. We're also contemplating a paradrop on the dot next south of Darwin should this base still be empty by the time these forces are ready to move. Transports can now fly from several of the closer DEI islands such as Saumlaki and Babar.

Burma: The troops moving to attack Paoshan will face no resistance, as the CHinese units there are pulling out. We like it. The river crossing into a mountain hex didn't look like much fun, especially with forts built. These forces will continue to move up the road with the intention to eventually reach Kunming. We've just bombed both this base and Tsuyung to hit the airfields and suppress fort building. Neither has more than 10,000 troops.

subs: I-6 finds a juicy TK convoy about 10 hexes outside of PH, but can't get a shot past the DD escorts. At least 4 TKs here. Other subs in the area will sprint for an intercept near PH, risking the ASW.

Trigger pulls it twice against two PBs near Truk. Both shots miss. No DC attack. After a good start, PBs have been seeing subs but not attacking them lately. The level of commanders is not generally high, but there just aren't any more good ones to use right now, so maybe through the war these guys will incrementally improve.

Triton duds on a small TK near Hokkaido and the 8 ASW CHa doesn't even get a DC in the water.

Burma: Recon showed only 14 fighters at Chittigong. We set the Tainan group loose, but the Hurricanes stood up well to this elite unit. I've been siphoning off TRACOM pilots lately, but there are still 7 aces and at least 5 pilots over 80 exp. On the day we lost 4 zeros in the air to 6 hurricanes. 2 more ops losses for each side.

China: Changsha was captured today! No units left in it. All Chinese are fleeing the area toward Chihkiang. We'll cross the river immediately to both Siangtan and Henyang.

The Chinese Army moving on Loyang has entered the city faster than we'd expected. We have a Cavalry, an SNLF, and an Engineer unit for about 140 AV in the base. It's at forts 1 92% and should go over to 2 tomorrow if nothing else happens. A Brigade is one day out as well coming out of strat mode.

DEI: One SnLF moved into Tilityap and bombarded. There are 6 Dutch units there for 173 reported AV. Two Divisions are on the way.

subs: I-6 chases the TK convoy and finds it again, but is again unable to get a shot off. O-16 is seen but not attacked again near Balikpapan.

O-23 lanches 2 torps at a 2 DD ASW TF near Billiton but misses. It is DCed and receives one non-penetrating hit.

SS Greenling launches 4 fish at Ada Maru off the coast of Luzon. At least one hits and duds.

So Pac: We decide to go for a raid on the OZ coast with the KB. There is just not enough going on near here and we have no good info about this area anymore either. As a decoy we've launched a mini-invasion of the North tip of OZ. Troops were supposed to land at an unoccupied Cooktown, but apparently our recon was old or wrong, and there are 2 units here. The 15 AV SNLF is ordered to quickly reload. We'll see if we can get it off quickly enough. It will head to Portland Roads if it survives. This 4 DD TF is LR CAPed from Port Moresby, also a test to see if any DBs are up here.

Our Bettys from Port Moresby hit Cairns Port and sink one AM, HMAS Townsville. He's certainly keeping these little ships in harm's way. I guess about 60 are made during the war, but at this point in 42, every bit helps and keeps less ASW in the water.

China: All air groups in range hit Chinese troops at Loyang and dish out heavy losses. They shock though and succeed in taking the base. This is a minor reversal that will be corrected within a week, but it teaches me not to discount any force, no matter how beaten down it appears. Our brigade was 1 day out and the forts were nearly at 2. Oh well. Nothing lost but a bit of LI and a few resource production points. We will surround these troops and push them out in roughly 4-5 days.

subs: SS Triton tries for a supply convoy to the Kuriles with two torpedoes but misses. No ASW attack.

So Pac: The KB is away. We've put Kaga and Akagi in one 11 ship TF and the other four in another with 12 ships. There is also a four DD ASW TF following, hopefully also acting as a screen for PT Boats should they be in Sydney. A small replenishment TF with 3 fast AOs and escorts also has a trailing 4 DD ASW TF.

Our small SNLF did get out of Cooktown intact and landed at Portland Roads all in the same turn. At least recon was right and no troops are up here yet.

China: Troops walk into an empty Siangtan and will DA tomorrow. Shaoyang and Henyang cross over in successive turns to the dark side without a fight. The great thing here is that we keep the forts that the Chinese built with all of that precious supply and the factories are intact. Troops are on the way to Changteng. There are masses of Chines troops in Chihkiang and on the road to Tuyun. They'll get there before we do unfortunately.

Burma: The 6th tank Rgt rolls into Paoshan and will take the base tomorrow.

What are your long term plans for China? If you're going for a knock out what is your timeline to acheive it, and if you don't, at what point will you look at redeploying troops to the Pacific? I think if you keep on your present course you will defeat China. My advice is make your main advance along major roads and don't try anything cute like I did. Take full advantage of the supply paths for your units and that supply simply won't pool in Chinese bases no matter the supply requested settings. Tuyun in my experience won't pool supply, so that is the key to opening the route into Central China in my opinion.

I hope your raid with KB goes well and as planned. I'd say good luck, but it seems I rely on that too much.

Thanks for the good wishes for the KB. I think the Allied CVs might still be in the Pacific. Just a hunch, because I haven't seen them for 5 months. One of the reasons for a move like this is to make it seem the KB is out of position and the Central Pacific is open. It is open, but with a trailing replenishment TF it could be fairly easy to transition to supporting something in the Gilberts within a week of sighting Allied ships. It's odd to me not to have seen any fighters at major bases in OZ. But I feel I should take advantage if the door is that wide open. If it were later in the war I'd be wary of a trap, but not at this point.

As for China, I would like to take it out of the war. I feel this is the one method of securing a lasting campaign for Japan regardless of what happens in the Pacific, (short of losing the Kuriles or something in the inner perimeter early of course). I would definitely like to free the troops in China for defensive use in Burma and in the Pacific, as well as for a decent reserve in the DEI.

The general plan is to consolidate most of the troops in the north and make it seem this is the area of our main thrust. At the same time we'll push to Tuyun and stay there while bombing the place into dirt. Some troops will circle below using the rail to Liuchow and move up to Tuyun until we have close to a 2 to 1 advantage there. Our current advance has 3,400 AV. I'm sure the Chinese troops on the way there will match or exceed this. So we'll need at least another 5-6 divisions to break through. This seems possible. It's good to know the place can't draw and hold supply. It's good territory though, and I'm wary of attacking too early and wrecking a bunch of good troops.

Once everything is in place, and if Chinese troops haven't shifted to open other avenues, I think a smaller force of 4-5 Brigades will move up the yellow road north of Kweilin as a feint to begin, then troops will push on Chihkiang in the Center. Hopefully this will draw or at least freeze any reserve from Chungking. Troops in the north will be continuing to push toward Kienko. Then, supported by massive bombing, we'll attack at Tuyun.

The situation on Luzon makes me think those troops will be free soon. I'm tempted to throw them into China as well, but they might end up in Perth. I have to do more recon over that way and find out what we'd face there.

Oh yeah. And as for timeline, I would hope to make it to Chungking by the end of 42. I wouldn't have said this to start the war, but now I feel this is achievable. Taking Chungking is another matter. We'll see when we get there.

Currently troops for the Pacific will begin moving from Manchuria. So far we've bought out engineers and armor, plus some base forces. More base forces and AA are following now, and then we'll start pulling Rgts and smaller units for a few months just to get some areas covered. By late summer we should be be able to begin getting whole divisions out and getting them to the Solomons. I'm worried about the DEI being naked as well, and I have to keep up the appearance of strength there at least. Outer Sumatra and the Andamans will be garrisoned first. Three of the Andamans already have base forces in place or on the way, and air power should be a solid deterrent there at least.

Another idea that I've been toying with is sending a division out fro mthe PI when that's done to take Diego Garcia and a Brigade for Addu. This would at least keep search and recon extended into the allied lines and he'd pretty much have to take those back before making a move in the area.

Burma: Paoshan falls today. The 33rd and most of the 55th Divisions are moving up to Paoshan from Lashio. The cavalry portion of the 55th Division is trailing, and once it arrives the 55th will reform. These troops will attempt to march over the mountains to China.

So Pac: A small Aussie infantry unit landed on Lord Howe Island today, taking the base. We'd just set it up as a forward recon area, potentially. This is interesting in light of the KB steaming near Koumac now and what we might run into if we're stealthy on our run down there.

It's been a while since I've had time (amidst traveling both to South Africa and NY, doing 2-3 turns a day, continuing with work and having a few moments with the GF) to sow the larger context of the game through some views and data.

Overall Info:

It looks from this like we're doing well. I have no idea where the VP situation should be at this point, but neither of us are concerned with VPs in a real sense. Still, it does give an indication of certain aspects of the game.
The army loss points are significant, mostly through the campaigns in China, but also by trapping and wiping out several units in the PI early and more recently the 1st Burma Div and other troops in Prome. I have to be careful not to begin to think the IJA is better than it is because I know the quality curve goes downhill from here in comparison to Allied troops.

Ship losses are in our favor by a 4 to 1 margin, but many of these ships are small refugees of the DEI, and in terms of points of ships lost we're closer together. I think about 5 AMC have been lost and a few other big merchant ships. No major losses of combat ships as of yet.

I hate being behind in air losses, but I'll have to get used to that while we fly as many missions as possible over bases in China and incur 5-10 ops losses a day across the map.
