After my excursion into Burma I talked my adversary into the new stacking limits map. I am glad we did this .. . although I have a nightmare in front of me to correct places that usually will hold 60K like Nomeua ..

The Gilberts will be bloody in November. The IJ have 2 Zero Sendai here loaded with 80+exp A2A of 80-90 .. the elite creme de la creme of Navy non-carrier pilots. I am matching up with 3 times more mediocre platforms and pilots .. even at 3-1 higher loses elimenating these units will have long term ramifications. Sweep Sweep Sweep ...and hopefully it is no worse than 3-1 losses average .. this turn we traded at 4-1 after scaping damaged aircraft

We will start a night bombing campaign on Rangoon. The B-24's and B-25's are in range and over time will take thier toll on the overstacked airfield.

Ok more later ...

The war ebbs and flows .. and this day was about missed opportunites .. well the inability of our submarines to make the most of opportunites .. if you look at the AAR you see very few turns we have made no sub-contacts .. I sure hope I can keep this up with life torps ..

Ok the new stacking limits are a real challange .. I will be working the next week or so correcting these problems ..

It looks another AAR/PBEM by Obvert and his opponent will also be making the plunge. It seems to be a learning curve, but it will be worth it. Glad to see you going in this direction. I may have to rethink my defense of Luzon with this in a new game using RA mod that will start in a few days. I don't think I can get everybody into Bataan.

If I did stacking earlier ...the Chineese Deathstar into Inchang would be impossible, and the battle for Katha would have been far more intersting. WitPAE is not a similation -- so I am not expecting some sort of "Real life results," but I can see how it would make the game more interesting for my opponent and I given this is scenario #1. You bring up an excellent point in my opinion of stuffing 100K of troops in a very small confinement area it would be possible but supplies would be used at a greater rate and a quicker surrender.

On a different note -- with all the great land battle models built by Gary this model is the worse in terms of gaming the system. The thought of not keeping the advance of a force and resetting the force back into a hex on encouter leads to so many possiblites of gamyness . then the whole free retreat of one hex. You say pursuit? In my attack and pursuit I moved a force over 80 miles in jungle over 2 days ..where I can only regularly move 2 miles a day.. what is that? Forget real life ...from a game standpoint it puts the defense in a while new light.

Anyway at least stacking forces some speading out of forces and the thought of a defensive/offensive front of reasonable proportions.

Sorry for being somewhat lazy, is the new mod for existing games? tech section? I am currently reading the manual, again, as I try and organize my first opposed landings, more clicking, searching and reading than turn 1.

I have been playing a game of "where's Waldo" in the Marshall's and I think through deductive reasoning I have eliminated all possibilites for those 2 Zero Sendais. The only possible base is Roi-Namur and they're on a 8 hex LRCAP over Milli & Jaluit. One strategy might be to get them to fly on a daily routine using different USAAF squadrons over time. Thus, we will be getting killed but hopefully they will get fatigued. At some point the experience and fatigue lines will cross and attrition become equal. It is a thought ...

Flying B-24 into death is not the solution. Unlike other zero fighter squadrons these guys can shoot down 4E's and have superior defensive skills.

The map below adds to previous postings diagraming the IJN strategy for the Marshall's. A fleet in being ready to pounce.

No laziness .. that is what threads are for in my book .. crosslinking ..

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3061702

The only drawback is the situation I am in . I have 30K on Tarawa wihin stacking limits in normal game.. until the new map mod ...stacking now is 20K .. I have to move 10K troops off the Atoll or until I do ...supply usage is double ..

Are you setting sub patrol boundries or patrol areas?

ps. thanks for the link, should we decide to go that way I would require a two week game time advance notice.

The Answer is .. Yes

In some cases I am patroling up deep water slots and then putting submarines on one hex patrols in strategic shallow water places where I think the IJN are "cheating". [well not cheating really but they are purposefully avoiding contact ...] This does not work with heavy escorted convoys but lone xAK's find themseves targets. This is my Gilberts Strategy. I often move patrols to interdict those 8 magic hexes from a USN target or stagger patrols around a known convoy.

In other cases I set "Patrol Around" and pick a target like a lone island .. especially in the Carolines where this method produces naturally overlapping patrols.

Fighters found! in a "Where's Waldo" moment I found the 14 Zeros at Roi Namur. Accidently we are going back to check again because I forgot to shutdown the mission Anyway this is very good news as I know the LYB's are LRCAP'ing at 8 hexes .. more so we can start thinking of launching a long ranged night mission to bomb these LYB's ..

One thing we are going to need to do .. upgrade our P-38's. At 11 hexes it is just long range .. with the upgrade we can sweep to 13 in regular range ..

In other news .. the stacking limits has forced me to create 2 maybe three more staging bases .. I have sent out 50 ships to go pick stuff up and move it to my new locations ..it will take at least a month to completely get stuff together again ..

The KB is stationed at the Enewetak Atoll waiting for the next invasion. The USN are patroling between New Herbides and Tabitetuea. We face each other in a big "Mexican standoff" in the Gilberts/Marshalls.

I have preached this over and over again in this AAR, but the fact that bases in the Marshalls in particular are all very low 'normal' build level [meaning the number in the (0) ] it is very tough to suddenly build bases. It takes a committment. The USN on the other hand is now overstacked on some islands just with SeaBees building up airbases as rapidly as possible. This produces an advantage for the Allies given '43 OOB and a KB still intact that does not happen in the Solomon's.

Where the IJ have 4 total bases of level 2 Roi-Namur 4 (1); Wotje 3 (0); Maloelap 4 (1); & Milli 2 (2) -- The USN have built up 9 bases in the Gilberts. Tarawa is 4E range from Roi-Namur.

In the Solomon's for example the IJ have Tulgi 5 (2); Munda 6 (3); Shortland 7 (4) -- I have Ndeni and Utupua. Here the IJ can mass some LBA and hurt a CV adventure. Luganville is 4E range from Tulagi but he can station a lot of fighters there if he wishes. It would take a lot of Sea Battles and Bombardments to even the score out here IMHO.

So we use our advantage in 4E's to clean out the Marshall's.

The other advantage of the Marshall's is a lack of Naval support. The IJ have brought out 4 AKE's and 4 AO's out here to support 4 BB's and 10 CV's/CVL's with a supporting cast. Shortlands and Rabual are all right there in the Solomon's. Enewetak is the only 5(2) port that can replenish the big boys using AKE's. Once this single resource is in range-- the entire theater becomes untenable. This is not so in the Solomon's with layer after layer of bases that can support resistance.

That said, the next part of this little adventure gets tough. The Marianas are a full 26 hexes away from the nearest LBA launch point -- Enewetak. That means a CV supported invasion against determined resistance, and in '43 the OOB does not support this kind of operation. Depending how late in 43' the Marashall's are cleared out -- a Solomon's campaign might be the only recourse unitl the toys come '44

You seem to be doing well in Burma, Gilberts, and have a foot hold into the lower Solomons. You have two other avenues of approach that I haven't much about - North Pacific and NW corner of Australia. What is going on there??

We have built up Adak & Sitka ... otherwise it has been pretty quiet .. the Western Oz has been very quiet ..

I am not so game for the "Hokkaido Hurricane" mainly because of comments by the lead developer . he never intended a huge USAAF vs IJAAF contest over the skies of Japan and a Hokkaido invasion will produce just that as we saw with Greyjoy's AAR. Instead I am slowly working towards a Formosa campaign as Admiral Nimitz orginally proposed. Clearing out the Marshall's is the first step toward that goal.

As I expressed before .. I am not sure the Marianas can be invaded against an IJ player with an intact KB before June 44 ..and 10 Essex class CV's ..my other choice is to invade the Carolines with LBA/CV support... Damn bloody ..a third choice is to get involved in the war of attrition in the Solomons .. not my first choice by far ...We shall see how things develop as the Marshall's campaign moves forward .. .

Burma is in a happy stalemate with Lashio completely cut off and forces in Mandalay pinned in .. 3 more divisions are on thier way and will take a month through the Jungle at 4 miles per day ..[10 days per hex 4 hexes to get to the right spot ..] 1943 will be very very interesting in Burma ..the IJ I suspect will post Tojo's here and try and gain control of the skies ...

always nice to answer posts and get a disscusion going .. the CR's get boring over time ..

The sub attacks sure feel good when they are in your favor. Unexpected successful attacks on capital ships as well as loaded transports are a welcome moral boost to the early Allied war effort.

2 B25's for 3 Oscars and a Lily .. 1 airbase hit But the effect of slipping through the Tojo's at night had to be devastating ...

The IJ attempt to clear the Railline we have cut off ... it does not go well ..

Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 12 disabled

Guns lost 11 (3 destroyed, 8 disabled)

Engineers: 0 destroyed, 6 disabled

Assaulting units:
55th Division
77th Infantry Regiment
18th Medium Field Artillery Regiment

Defending units:
70th British Division
16th British Brigade

The 55th Division was holding Mandalay and now has moved to clear the rail line. The attack failed to gain attrition advnatages and we have a lot of reinforcements into this hex in 10 days. A second force is moving toward Lashio ... A third force due in a month or so cutting their way through the jungle will enter this fray ... Iron Balcony has accomplished its mission . cut the line to Lashio and oversee the IJ operations in Burma ..

I do have one big problem . supply .. the lack thereof will keep disabled squads disabled ... it is a slow death unitl supply can be restored ..as it is for the IJ in Lashio ..

The Tojo seems durable enough, but on sweeps by P40Ks and Hurricanes we have faired well. Granted the P40K squadron has elite pilots but the hurricane squadron I swept Bhamo with for 2 days scored well with little combat exprience and training in the low 60s (good defensive skills though low 70s) The combat was mostly 12 on 6-7 our favor with unknown IJAF pilot quality.
