I've been debating with myself (I always win that way) about making an AAR for this and I won out, again.

Italy 43 is IMO a great beginner's scenario. It's large enough to give you several options in maneuvering and still small enough in scale to not overwhelm a new comer to war gaming.

This was my first scenario to complete. After several false starts I hit it again from the beginning armed with some basic knowledge about rail, sea and air lift and Supply Points.

By turn 40 I was in complete control of Rome and by T 55 or 60 not a single nazi could even see the smoke from the home fires in the burbs. At T75 I had a double defensive ring with armor forward around all of Rome and the nearby Anchorages just waiting for someone to have a go at me. I also had some "rover" (quick action) divisions inside the ring to quickly throttle any potential breach.

TBH, I simply paid attention to my supply points (and theirs) and took full advantage of the 5000 Sea lift capacity between T32 & 38 to move the bulk of my armor and some infantry into position to strike at the Nazi Roman occupiers.

I also sent forth my Engineers, Airborne & Spec. Forces troops to garrison key bridges, intersections & anchorages and most importantly, their Supply Depots. So they had no place to go and nothing to wear if they did. I derived a truly morbid delight in watching them go from green to yellow to orange and then red simply because I cut off their supply access. And every time they attacked me I would ROFL as the "Unit Evaporated" battle results displayed.

Additionally, I put decoys in places to draw them away from key SPs in advance of an advance and it worked every time. Anzio (a Supply Point/Anchorage near Rome) fell into my hands without firing a shot.

I decided, why go through them, when you can go around them? So I didn't have as many epic losses in battles while they suffered heavily when attacking my defenses and rear guards during the march north.

I am extremely impressed with the Garrison troops. Once dug in the AB, SSF & Engs. are nearly untouchable unless by a very heavy and determined armor/arty assault. Not one of them were pushed out of their positions after entrenching. I had to reentrench the Engs a few times but no losses and they stayed supplied. Then I blew the bridges on withdrawal.

I ensured the enemy had to take the most difficult paths to reach Rome and they of course had little in the way of sustenance the entire journey. So by the time the Nazis arrived at the Roman AO from the south they were exhausted and starving and in no hurry to engage my well fed and fully supplied forces.

In the end I got a draw out of it. Even though there was zero chance for the Nazis to recapture Rome, the main objective in this one.

It'd be nice if the game designer could award a win for achieving the primary goal of liberating Rome instead of only scoring all those dinky little flags, which have to be left behind to achieve the main goal.

If you're a noob like me I highly recomend reading the articles here. https://sites.google.com/site/toawredux/Home/toaw-articles They proved to be the difference for me as well as all the invaluable advise given by our panel of veterans.

Gaspadin,

nice Synopsis for a TOAW newbie, well done! Perhaps you like to spice up future ones with screen shots etc.?

PhotoScape e.g. is a good and easy to understand program I used for this - http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2942294&mpage=1

Klink, Oberst

TBH, Herr Oberst, I was just being lazy.

So being duly chastised I got ambitious.

I'll pick up the action at Turn 12. The Salerno Supply Point (SP) is well defended at this point with all the British and Canadian troops that entered at the "toe" of the Italian boot having used sea-lift and road marches to move northward.

Note the Campo Alpini SP to the east, belonging to the Germans is now Allied property leaving them with fewer vittles and equipment replacements. Also a British division is now holding an anchorage near Napoli where the next dual use SP is located. The Nazis got a bit excited at this point and lost several units attempting to recapture their supplies.

Turn 24

I let them have Campo Alpini back, but the march north rendered it insignificant so no attempt to retake it was made.

Note that Salerno (SP) is still in Allied hands as well as Napoli and it's accompanying SP and anchorages, on the next peninsula northward.

Additionally, I sent some Airborne and Engineers north to take and hold some key intersections in the central valley. These guys were absolute ANIMALS! The Engineers would occasionally get knocked out of Entrenched mode, but never gave an inch. The Germans must have left a lot of potatoes, sauerkraut and beer in these spots as my boys were never in any danger of going low on supplies. They choked off all northbound traffic and kept the bulk of the Nazi troops on the long draining routes to Rome.

Turn 38

After taking FULL advantage of the 5000 Sea-lift capacity the Allies were in very good position. Several Armored units were transported north to Anzio this way and quickly solidified a beach head. The British AD to the north and the SSF troops at the east intersection came in early as decoys to draw the enemy off of the Anzio hex and it worked like a charm. The Allies landed at Anzio like they were arriving on holiday.

Meanwhile (still on T 38) the lads at Napoli are giving the Nazis what for as we continue our northward march.

The key bridges and intersections are firmly under Allied control now and its all going according to plan. The road march troops did an excellent job keeping the Nazis busy while the bulk of the reinforcements where taking a leisurely sea cruise north.

Turn 56

The Nazis have received their eviction notice, but stubbornly attempt to hold on to Roma. With more Allied forces inside Rome than fascist we both knew it just wouldn't work out. And since we now control the cupboard, guess who has to move.

The road blockers are still standing tall and making us all proud. The rest of the invasion forces will soon all be around Rome drinking the wine and enjoying the attentions of the locals

Turn 65

Rome is liberated! With the exception of a few hidden Nazi symapthisers Rome is free.

The Armored troops have been given carte blanche to sweep the areas around Rome clean while a formidable security force is setting up at the eastern approaches where the exhausted Germans will begin arriving soon with little food or functioning equipment after a long & arduous trek north courtesy of our exemplary AB, Eng & SSF efforts to hold the bridges and intersections southward. They ROCKED!

And finally, Turn 76

It's quite evident that the Nazis have no chance to retake Rome at this stage with the forces available and they DO have other fronts besides Italy.

Rome is completely encircled and defended by two rings. Armor outward and well fed infantry on the Roman outskirts keeping the "locals" happy. The ladies were most appreciative.

I sent out some British AB to take any objectives they could. I made one critical mistake and failed to stay parked on one of their entry/supply points in the northwest area, but still with few troops to send to Italy the Nazis had nothing to retake Rome with.

I hope you enjoyed my little picture show. Over & Out
