Hello,

I first got this game soon after release but for reasons too embarrassing to mention, I haven't updated it since.

I'd like to now make up for lost time but to play the most up to date version, should I simply download and apply the latest patch or does such an old version as mine need some form of extra aged care?

Thank you.

Welcome!

Download and install the latest "comprehensive" patch. IIRC that is 1106i. Then download and install the latest Beta. There is an "official" version of the Beta in the same place as the other official downloads. As more Beta releases come out they wil lbe in the Tech Support sub-forum under a Beta release thread. I recommend keeping at least fairly current with those as well. That will get the code and stock scenarios as up to date as can be.

Next, I recommend you get DaBabes scenarios (Link) for a couple of reasons. One is that they are made by a group of people that include some of the AE developers, and DaBabes has been used to introduce various fixes, improvements, and refinements that might never make it back into the stock game. Also at DaBabes you will find an extended map (optional) which I do recommend you use. Still more that I recommend, files that implement optional stacking limits. The stock game only has stacking limits for atolls and small islands. These files implement stacking limits for every hex on the map based upon terrain and infrastructure. If you go with these things from the beginning you will not have to "un-learn" bad habits of using unrealistic masses of troops where they could not have been supported and so on.

Good luck!
