IIRC the CMF Inf squads are much better than the CMF Militia squads (I might have the names a bit wrong). Any upgrading you can get from Militia to Inf increases the anti-soft of the squads quite a bit.

not enough CMF squads around to upgrade the divisions. Only if I would disband a unit filled up with CMF squads but then I would be better off disbanding one rgt of the two arriving Aus Divs. Both options could be done within a couple of days though.

Disbanding parts of the divisions arriving in Aden doesn't seem like the best move to me. These units are pretty experienced, disbanding parts of them to be refilled later will lower that exp. The units in Australia are bad to begin with so rebuilding them won't hurt them. The second reason is that units in Australia are restricted, as long as there isn't a massive invasion of Australia, you're not going to be using all of them anyway, so you might as well use them as a replacement pool for your other units (though it's starting to look like you might be fighting on Australian soil soon).

Yeah, disbanding a rgt of the Aden divs wouldn't be the best one could do but if bluebook really goes for Australia then I need those AIF42 squads as those are 50% better than the CMF militia. Have found an easier way to do it though, got three dozen AIF42 squads in the pool and can upgrade an uderstrenght bgd using those squads. Then I am going to disband the bgd in Sydney which will bring my squads to something like 70-75 which is enough to upgrade a division every couple of days.

Yes, this is the way to do it all the way through. Upgrade smaller units like lark and gull. Then after filling them up and upgrading them disband them. The extra squads will go into the pool as upgraded squads and you can then start upgrading full divisions by doing it a brigade at a time. Realistically you are looking towards using Australian units on the offensive in 1944. With careful disbanding and considering the pitiful replacement rate and PP costs you can sustain about 4 active divisions in combat. This should be your goal. Once there is no threat to OZ focus on building four good divisions. The fully upgraded 1944 Australian divisions are very powerful and loaded with support. Very good units but you have to be very careful about replacements. Does not help that they use commonwealth devices of which there are never enough.

So many players go to great pains to reconstruct the lost Singapore brigades and divisions but quite frankly it is a waste of time and resources. Focus on building up the units you already have. You will eventually have more than you can use anyways. What with PP costs, I am in mid 44 and only have about three Australian divisions and one or two NZ brigade bought out. Just too many demands on my precious PPs.

PP costs are the reason I do rebuild the Singapore division from the bird battalions. Together with the 3 divisions that arrive in Aden over the course of the first years that gives you 4 unrestricted Ozzie divisions without any PP cost. It does help that I never got attacked in Australia and didn't need to fill out the restricted divisions of course ...

Yes, that would work. But if you have a serious fight in Oz and take losses then the choices become harder. I bought back the bird battalions in 44 but only because I needed some more small garrison and invasion units. Never did recombine them.

I have turned all base forces at Clark Field to take replacements and they do have an awful lot of AA guns now but this doesn't help at all as the enemy is flying airattacks 99% of the days without any pause and this keeps my base forces so heavily disrupted that they do literally nothing... guess the enemy hasn't even lost halve a dozen bombers over Clark Field while flying probably two or three thousand sorties... not only this, having such a high number of AA guns the supply consumption is exceptionally high... put everything together and it was a real mistake to turn replacements on for the base forces...

Broome is Japanese, the valuable RAN base force has been moved out earlier when it became apparent that the enemy is aiming at (Northern) Australia... naval support is quite precious in Australia at this stage of the war so not losing that unit is good... the base force was split into three separate units which were ordered to recombine on day one of the war...

I love it, I really love it... look below how DAMAGED the sub is... no matter what I am told, while I accept the explanation that it is due to not enough agression of the sub skipper, I still think that it is laughable... why on Earth would a sub skipper not attack an unescorted freighter? there just isn't a reason at all... and if it happens, it should happen once a year but not four times a month...

seriously, like my rants or not but please don't tell me that this is something that can be called realistic and all it needs is adjusting the routine that in general is thought out quite well but the variables put in were wrong... the sub would attack submerged just fine, but due to attacking surfaced this routine kicks in and prevents the sub from attacking and saves the freighter... so what I have said earlier could not be more correct, having no escort is actually an advantage for the IJN freighters which is really laughable...

and to put not the best skippers into subs but the aggressive ones may be a workaround but it still doesn't change the fact that this routine just isn't working as it should and in all seriousness, I think the one that came up with it thought it would work different...

And here another interesting observation. I know there are ppl around that think all my rants or critics (or whatever you want to call it) are taken out of the blue and have no basis at all. Many times I think that ppl just don't look exactly enough, aren't really interested or just fail to notice what is going on. I have my pet peeves and the one mentioned here isn't one of them but I thought I could still show it.

We have had O24 driving home the most succesful sub attack of the war so far and there won't be many more succesful ones I guess so sinking two freighters and a fleet oiler in one night should IMO result in some experience increase. Ok, thought it would be worth it to look up O24 in tracker to see what happened... what happened? nothing... so much about the experience routines, lol...

I've actually seen pretty decent experience gains for some ships after a successful battle, but the caveat is that it was against other warships. For subs who'll mostly be shooting at merchants you're not going to see a lot of improvement.

Except, isn't that the whole point of submariners - that they shoot at merchants?

One would hope but not if they are escorted in AE. What really surprises me is not that CT's attacks on the surface are lackluster but that his opponent sees the need to ever send out ships without escorts. Even a lone crap PB will draw a sub attack away from the merchants most of the time. And the sub will usually miss the escort.

"ships" yeah, but subs? I have had subs hitting enemy carriers and they gained nothing. Don't know what's the story behind.

bluebook has an awful lot of convoys moving around but yeah, he probably could scrape a PB for every convoy. But why should he, my subs are toothless dorks anyway if they attack unescorted convoys.

On the ships issue I was actually bowled over at how much night xp was gained by one particular ship in my last game. I normally don't pay meticulous detail to ship crew experience gains, but took notice one day that the Detroit had a night xp value of 65 by late fall '42.

Not knowing what it started with I mistakenly believed that it must have started somewhere near that value and took note to be sure to get it in action as a light SAG leader early on in my next game. I started the next game and examind the Detroit's game start xp value and was very surprised to discover that it starts with a night xp value of 35.

I can't recall how many surface fights it participated in during the prior game to get an increase of 30 points in 9 months, but I do tend to be very aggressive with small light SAGs and tend to lead them with the CLs that have very low AA values as I see them as primarily surface combatants since they suck as carrier escorts.

yup, you can bring up your ships experience levels, they just have to survive those battles you send them in inexperienced, which is a hard task if you consider you need 3 or 4 succesful engagements against an enemy at least equal in numbers to actually reach the enemy's experience. A single fight can give you more than a dozen points depending on where experience is when you start the engagement. But overall, you won't hit the enemy's experience levels with your ships that start out the war or come in as reinforcements until mid 44. Those then suddenly are night battle super heros.

I'm uber-aggressive with surface combatants, almost insanely so - my 1942 era warships are still terribly inexperienced in 1944 though. Even being hugely aggressive the number of cruisers likely to experience multiple surface battles, and survive them all, is pretty slim.

hurrey, a truly borked routine... what gives, realism tells you this shouldn't happen as it does in the game, no sub skipper in WWII would have run from unescorted freighters all the time! NO SUB SKIPPER WOULD HAVE DONE THIS! Now go figure what is wrong, the sub skippers agressiveness ratings or the routine taking those agg ratings into account... but noone to tell me this would be realistic... and choosing idiot skippers not able to command a sub is just something that makes me

we kept our 40+ Marauders on low nav attack as I wasn't happy about this convoy unloading in the area but today the enemy has ordered Zeroes from Rabaul to LRCAP the ships and the Zeroes achieve quite a result flying LRCAP from no less than 10 hexes and there surely aren't that many there at Rabaul... the Marauders take it on the chin but manage to probably sink one of the xAKL... if just more of the bombers would fly... with only 2 min pre warning time the Zeroes did very well against the fast medium bombers at 1000ft as two B-26 were outright shot down...

Guns lost 441 (441 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 414 (414 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units destroyed 32

finally, deliberate attack number 8 or 9 finally overruns the brave defenders of Singapore... we were holding out until 9th Feb, historical surrender was 15th Feb so we did quite well here considering how many units bluebook sent here to take this important base... losses for us of course are enormous but we just have to live with those units on Malaya, Java and the Philipines being lost...

we inflicted exceptional losses on the enemy though, counting up combat squads destroyed we are at roughly 620 enemy combat squads destroyed, with many more being disabled (and back in action soon)... haven't counted the support squads and guns, in total the enemy surely had more than 1000 squads destroyed... bluebook's reactions about the fight at Singergrad clearly showed that he wasn't really amused about how this was going, which is quite understandable... not only the losses within his troops, the delay of his further offensives probably even more so are not according to IJ plans... the weeks of delay at Singapore may be exactly those weeks we need elsewhere to stiffen our defense to a level it gets not as easy for the IJ as it is within the SRA when we fight on lost ground anyway...

Hi CT,

There is a database issue with dutch subs not firing their deck guns because they are rated as AA.
Perhaps there's some morale check in surface battles on rounds fired vs rounds received or something. It must be bad for the morale of a submariner to be shot at but not being able to shoot back with that magnificent Bofors AA gun.

In short: perhaps the diving is caused by the database error having consequences in the battle algorithm.

I've actually seen pretty decent experience gains for some ships after a successful battle, but the caveat is that it was against other warships. For subs who'll mostly be shooting at merchants you're not going to see a lot of improvement.

"ships" yeah, but subs? I have had subs hitting enemy carriers and they gained nothing. Don't know what's the story behind.

Detroit has been my supership from day one. In fact all of the old light CAs seem to make excellent destroyer leaders and do very well. I have lost most but I am willing to bet that Detroit has been in about 20 fights small and large during my campaign. A charmed life indeed. I will have to check her exp. Sad thing is, she should be in the 80s range by now but it just does not happen. Just a part of the game that any American warship before 1/44 has average to low crews and any after 1/44 had excellent crews.

my Dutch subs do fire their deck guns, there were incidents when they fired their whole AA gun ammo into freighters but usually they break off. Guess that db issue might habe been fixed in babes?

Anyway, carry on!

lol, lovely... tip to every IJ player: keep moving your freighters unescorted as this means EVERY Allied sub skipper with an aggression rating <55 is useless, means 75% of the top skippers with a high naval rating are pure dorks and can't be used... of course, this would be totally different if the freighters would be escorted as those dorks then attack with their low agg rating, they just don't do that when the freighter is unescorted... what a funny little logic behind that...

and today's intel:

4/38th/B Division is planning for an attack on Port Moresby.
3/3rd Engineer Construction Battalion is loaded on a Japanese xAK moving to Port Hedland.
2/9th Field AF Construction Battalion is loaded on xAK Momoyama Maru moving to Port Hedland.

interestingly enough, this probably means bluebook is going to build up Port Hedland which is quite surprising to me... we have spotted two enemy units moving over the Kokoda trail, one might be 4th Div...

and here's the long promised strategic map... looking at it, it doesn't look as bad as it actually is (all those green dots in SOPAC are Allied dot bases left) because all of SOPAC is lost with Australia and New Zealand being cut off from the US West Coast... I still own Canton Island, Palmyra, Christmas Island, Johnston and Hawaii of course... next Allied controlled areas are New Zealand and Australia... within the SRA we have three strongholds left, Clark Field, Malang on Java and one base North of Medan on Sumatra...

Thanks CT, that's a pretty daunting perimeter for only the 2nd week of Feb! You seem to be taking it all in stride though.

Are you digging in to defend PM, or has the SOPAC push interfered with your usual Australia plans? It seems like he hasn't really caught much of value for all his effort, but maybe it's kept you from doing things you otherwise would have.

Seems like Port Hedland is step 1 to Darwin probably, which wouldn't be too surprising. Are you anticipating a further reach like Ceylon or maybe NZ? With scen 1 troops and how spread out he is I think he'd have to be crazy to go for India or Australia proper before your holdouts are reduced.

Actually his push into SOPAC hasn't really harmed me. Ok, I would have preferred to hold the line Noumea - Fiji - Pago Pago but in the end it will do more harm to him than me I guess as it forces me into changing my overall strategy so he could well see me driving a land death star into Burma in halve a year.

I would bet he goes for Darwin and he has troops marching over the Kokoda trail to attack PM but only two units are spotted so this seems to be rather light. He has battleships and cruisers at Koepang together with several convoys so he either is going for the Perth area or Darwin next. If I were him, I would take Darwin first to prevent further buildup, same for PM. PM and Darwin in Allied control could well turn out to be a bigger problem for him than his conquest of SOPAC is a problem for me.

I really don't think his troops are spread out just because he took all that area. He took a place, picked up the unit and moved on to take the next target. There were two divs operating in SOPAC, guess both are tasked to assault PM now, IIRC intel showed both prepping for PM. And else there were only small IJN units operating in SOPAC which are enough to take all the empty ground of course.

Ceylon I really don't care, NZ wouldn't change the strategic situation at all, I would lose a lot of points but I would gain a lot of first line NZ units as reinforcements so if this doesn't trigger autovictory for him then it actually won't do him any good at all as he would trade perm restricted crap NZ units with non restricted first line combat units. I doubt he'll go for India, his drive into the Indian Ocean had only one goal IMO, to cut off my shipping lanes from India to Australia which points also points towards my theory that Australia will be his main target.

Japanese Ships
xAK Nisso Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
xAK Asama Maru #2

Allied Ships

Japanese ground losses:
96 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

not surprising, after his small IJN unit failed on Tahiti, using the whopping design feature aka amphib bonus the enemy lands two unprepared regiments of 4th Div on Tahiti... means the loss of the last Allied held base in SOPAC is only a matter of days...

12 Support troops accidentally lost during unload of 4th/C Div /2

Submarine attack near Madang at 97,123

Allied Ships
SS KXV, hits 8

Japanese ground losses:
29 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

xAKL Kitahuku Maru is sighted by SS KXV
SS KXV attacking on the surface
SS KXV low on gun ammo, Ver Brugge P. breaks off surface engagement and submerges

this time the sub really suffers damage so no rant about breaking off (even though DAMAGE wasn't the reason for breaking off this time )... what seems to be totally crazy though is that a sub doesn't carry enough ammo to harm even a small freighter... the troop carrying xAKL is hit by one and a halve dozen 88mm shells, isn't on fire, isn't heavily damaged... not a single torp was fired on the enemy ship... once again, I would have better been off with the enemy ESCORTING his troop convoy because then there would have been the chance to attack submerged and fire some torps... guess 3 out of 4 surface attacks against UNescorted convoys result in fails, which is worse than submerged attacks... never experienced this phenomena before because I never played someone who only uses escorts for a minority of his convoys but it obviously pays off for bluebook to NOT escort his convoys... omg...

moderately damaged and out of gun shells KXV retires...
