So we're nearing the end of April 1942 in our PBEM. I'm the allies. I'm not a newbie, but I'm still relatively inexperienced compared to a lot of PBEM players. My opponent seems to have played much more than I have. Things are not going well for me, and I'm hoping for some input. Here is the situation by region:

SRA:

Japan controls it. All of it. I have no ground forces left, and the only Allied naval forces in the area are the subs I'm trying to catch some of his transports with.

Australia:

He's landed at Darwin and pushed south to Tennant Creek. Tennant Creek will likely fall within another day or two. I'm building up the airfields at Alice Springs, and moving infantry forces up to make another stand there, as it will be more difficult for him to move on the poorer quality roads between Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. I have significant bases built at Perth and Townsville, in addition to all the standard southern ones. I have most of my 4E bombers in Townsville right now, which I plan to move to Alice Springs to slow his army's advance southward once the airfield gets built up a bit more.

SWPAC:

He's had his way with this region too. Rabaul, Port Moresby, Luganville, all his. Noumea is still in Allied hands, but he could take it in a single day if he wanted, as I have very little I can bring to defend it in terms of land forces. New Zealand is still safe, as well as my LOC to southern Australia.

Central and South Pacific:

Japan has Wake, all the islands around Kwajalein, and Baker Island. I have heavily fortified Canton Island and have a huge fighter and bomber force there, as well as a sizable infantry force. Suva is also heavily built up, though not quite as much. Pago Pago is a work in process. I've been using Papeete as a stopover for transports, as it gives me a safer route to Australia. Midway has been heavily built up as well. The most significant action in CENTPAC so far was just a few days ago when I tried to sneak a SCTF near Wake to use floatplanes to recon Wake for possible bombardment raids. However, he just happened to have a couple CV's scouting between Wake and Midway, and decimated my SCTF... 1 CA, 3 CL's, and a few DD's lost.

Indian Ocean:

He landed at and took Moulmein and Rangoon, and is pushing up to Mandalay. I have Mandalay fortified, and hope to slow him there. I've been building up Imphal and Dacca for use as air bases and defensive bastions, especially Dacca. I have subs in the area, as KB is present. He's been launching huge raids against bases in the area, to the point that I've grounded my fighters and am just relying on my significant AA presence at Dacca to protect them, as they just get shot down whenever they fly. Ceylon is still mine, but isn't nearly as heavily defended as it should be.

Allied Fleet:

Apart from my PH and CENTPAC losses, my fleet is still pretty intact. I've taken heavy transport losses though. I have 7 Fleet carriers (5 American, 2 Brit), plus Hermes and Long Island. I've been mostly keeping them hidden, but have launched some brief raids in the North Pacific, and kept a couple south near Suva as a surprise if he ever tries to land at Suva. I haven't lost too many subs, but many are severely damaged and in port for lengthy repairs, so I only have a moderate sub force to use.

That is the bulk of what's going on to this point. He has about a 5:1 victory point lead on me already, and I don't see any way I can prevent an auto-victory come 1943. Considering the information I've given above, what suggestions do you have? I'm getting clobbered everywhere, and whenever I try to sneak in a counter-attack or surprise, it just gets beaten back or outright destroyed. The most productive thing I've been able to do is get one lucky Mk. 14 shot to actually detonate on Kaga.

What can I do? Where can I do it? How can I do it? How can I prevent an auto-victory? His margin only keeps growing. Thank you for any insight you can give.

Hi,

First question is if you are posting in the correct forum? I saw you mention Tenant Creek and that base does not exist in vanilla WitP but it does in AE.

Second reflection I have is that I lost Noumea in a game (in WitP) recently and didn't like it. If KB is in the Indian Ocean and you have 5 US Fleet carriers can you try to reinforce Noumea?

I believe it's a bit too early for you to make a stand somewhere. If he concentrates he should be able to push you out anyway but it would mean that he probably has to concentrate his forces there rather than hitting you somewhere else.

Hopefully somebody else has more (and most likely better) advice for you since my experience is more or less limited to playing the AI.

It helps to keep track of his forces as much as possible in my view.

Good luck

It's WITP, but the CHS 159 scenario, so it has lots of bases vanilla WITP doesn't.

It doesn't matter what game, WITP or AE, vanilla or a mod.  The thing you need to decide is where to fight and then draw your line in the sand.  Knowing your own strengths and weaknesses are as important as knowing those of your enemy.  Some places need to be given up with little or no opposition and others need to be made bloody.

If you know where the KB is why don't your CVs do something that's relatively safe?  Keeping your growing fleet of CVs together is important if you do run into trouble.  Once the TBDs are replaced with TBFs your fleet becomes a little stronger.  The Wildcats being replaced by the Hellcats make you a buzzsaw.  Even losing a CV battle and doing little or no damage to the KB is OK.  Your CVs will respawn and he will probably have empty flight decks.

Marine Defense Bns are are handy unit to place on the islands that you decide to make a fight for.  Adding an RCT for some additional muscle and laying mines doesn't hurt either.  Remember that the IJN can run in and out, bombarding you and avoiding your LBA in most cases if it's used properly.  Even your PBY searches will miss these nasty surprises if you don't have interlocking search areas.

Raids with surface assets can be a nasty problem for the IJN to deal with as long as you can avoid his CVs and LBA when doing it.  Remember that nobody can be everywhere in strength at once.  Find the chinks in the armor.

In Oz your strength will grow and then throwing your Aussies and SWPAC assets into the fight should liberate the territory held by the Japanese.

Retaking the SRA isn't really needed as cutting it off will kill his industry.  Pushing sub bases forward and eventually using LBA for this will do nicely.

Time is on your side as mid 1943 sees you swinging into an relentless offensive mode.

Thanks for the responses so far.

I'm thinking he has Noumea in his near-term plans, so my idea is to take the 2 Brit CV's I have near Sydney and the 2 US CV's just off Suva and place them in a couple different spots just off and on opposite sides of Noumea. Most of his naval air power is tied up in the Indian Ocean, so I don't think he couldn't put more than 2 carriers in a force for a Noumea invasion. With two separate allied CV groups on opposite sides of the island, I'm figuring if he detects one, there's a shot he might not see the other, and the impromptu trap will spring. Even if he doesn't send CV's, I'd still probably sink a ton of transports and a few warships..... if I'm right about him going for Noumea.

The risk is that splitting one's CVTFs invites big trouble.  I'd put the 4 CVs into 2 CVTFs operating within the same hex to concentrate the CAP.  If he detects 2 CVs in your proposed deployment it's likely that they will get clobbered.  The other way offers an improved chance of victory.

Besides if he spots 4 CVs maybe his invasion would be called off.
