A few days ago, Brian (Borner) opened up another campaign - this time with changed faces. He´s playing the IJN and I gonna give a try with the Allied forces. Since I am really not very experienced with them it should become a very interesting game...

Mid-May, 1942

The Imperial forces made some of their initial landings so far - GG, Lunga and Irau. Another beach party was reported having a campfire at Rossel Island, but did not attack yet.
To cause the IJGHQ some trouble, I sent some cruisers and DDs on station in the vicinity of the Southern Solomons. They were lurking there just in time to meet two IJN invasion fleets...sinking a good number of them right off the beachhead! To make matters worse, my small force escaped the IJN 5th Carrier Division which had rushed south to cover the Guadalcanal operation.

Very delightful launch so far. However, I must admit the allied forces are truly weak early in the game. Not much I can do for a couple of weeks... And most of my pilots are pretty green rookies

one of our coastwatchers (an English man called Ol´ Nose) took this shot yesterday... he was instantly flown out by one of our Catalinas down to an allied base, having his films developed...

some of my subs are ordered to lay mines here & there... recently one of the big IJN MLs hit one. Even if not sunk, it will keep this very dangerous vessel out of the war for some time.

Otherwise relatively quiet war progress so far.

here we go again.  Ralf has hit Lugna twice with a fast CA group with my carriers supposedly within covering range of the islands. Other than that, not a whole lot to report yet, although that will soon change

July, 1942

Increasing action now. Had strengthened PM a bit to the point where I could launch some mediocre strikes against IJ shipping in the Lae vicinity. However, had to pull my airforce out recently after some air raids over PM.

In the meantime Kido Butai seems to be at full throttle, harassing my sea lanes everywhere. Right now they´re painting red the Aussie coast.
So we decided to send our carrier force north to retaliate a bit. Some transports were bombed at Lunga anchorage.

I am wondering if the Allies can compete in this game given competent Japanese play. I guess the Allies goal should be to avoid battle until the improved air units arrive in 1943, but this assume the IJN will not be overly agressive.

an evasive Allied player can be quite frustrating, and you´re running into the danger either to make errors while beeing too aggressive or at least your powerful IJN forces suffering alot of wear´n´tear damage in the prolific months of 1942...

Though maybe not very fancy, you can splendidly "survive" the early stages of this game as allied player....

End of July 1942

The mighty IJN set out several times for Southern waters, hunting Allied shipping and harrassing the Aussie coast. Lost a good number of transports in the process. However, nothing critical happened and I managed to keep my carriers out of harms way.
The Hebrides and SOPAC area is safe and quiet so far.

Meanwhile, the struggle for PM has begun. As it seems the Empire brought insufficient troops from Buna over the Owen Stanley Range. And since I was able to bring in major reinforcements to Port Moresby we launched an immediate attack on the intruders which are losing strength & men daily. Not sure if I can hold out long enough, but it doesn´t looks too bad.
Fortunately Brian lost a decent number of tranports during his troop shift to Buna. As I hope the lift shortage will be felt soon enough. From my own experience, the Japanese are always in a desperate need of supplies and even more: FUEL.

after some flaws & bugs affecting the gameplay, and KB suffering a destastrious defeat of PM while trying to cover a renewed invasion try and outflank my forces, we dicided to give the Allies a win and to start over for another one.

Being at the End of May 1942 now again, with nothing worth to mention happening so far.
