Cagayan makes for dismal reading.

We captured the base on 9 December - more than two weeks ago.

With 20 engineers present there, guess what the damage levels still are on 26 December?

Port Damage: 46
Airfield Service Damage: 54
Airfield Runway Damage: 14

With engineers being in short supply it is going to be even more important to protect strategic airbases.

One thing I've really noticed is the importance of preparation.

Forcing myself to have a minimum of 25 planning points for IJA units invading bases in the Dutch East Indies (most of my SNLFs are at that level or close to it anyway, e.g. 2nd Kure SNLF on its way to land at Dumanquilas has 26 prep for that base, Sasebo 2nd SNLF on its way to land at Oroquieta has 36 prep etc.) has really cut down on disruption and casualties.

I totally agree. 25pp is a good marker, more for sure is better , but needs must when the Devil vomits in your kettle, and you KNOW the enemy is starting to wobble....Banzai!!

My opponent gave me a bloody nose at Ambon. More details will follow later, but my entire Ambon invasion task force has been destroyed in return for two Allied destroyers.

NAVAL MOVEMENTS

Disaster at Ambon. A strong Anglo-American surface group including BB Prince of Wales and CA Houston hits our invasion TF before they've had a chance to unload at Ambon.

The six destroyers escorting the five Kyushu's do well, under the circumstances...DD Alden is sunk, DD Paul Jones is also claimed, hopefully DD Electra and DD Express are also carrying moderate damage...I've sent in some ships to try to intercept the this force, hopefully we can land some torpedo hits on the larger vessels...

Two SNLFs have essentially been destroyed, 120 AV gone. My opponent must be grinning like a Cheshire cat.

And if that's not bad enough, a sub torpedoes a transport of mine, that subsequently sinks. At least the transport was empty!

MALAYA

The 3rd SSVF Battalion that retreated out of Georgetown surrenders to my troops. 5th Division is making good progress along the western coastal road towards Kuala Lumpur. Troops from 18th Division have FINALLY reached Temuloh (after 19 days' march). Once Temuloh is captured, all divisional assets will be railed there and they will rest a bit to allow 5th Division to reach Kota Bharu.

CHINA

At least things are going smashingly here...I suppose my good fortune in China makes up for the utter disaster that was the scalping of my invasion TF at Ambon. We shock attack the remainder of 88th Chinese Corps just north of Wenchow...heavy losses are inflicted. The 88th Chinese Corps now only numbers a few hundred men. We will continue marching south to capture Wenchow.

Two brigades start marching from Lang Son towards Nanning.

DUTCH EAST INDIES

Miri is captured - but only 123 of the oil centres are undamaged. It's going to be a long road to repair it all...I'm not going to repair the refineries, though.

NAVAL MOVEMENTS

I drop off the last remains of my Ambon invasion force - they get wiped out by attrition. DD Sagiri is still in good shape, hopefully we sank two Allied destroyers.

MALAYA

We are advancing down the peninsula, and virtually destroy 1st Mysore Battalion. A massive invasion force will land at Mersing in the next few days. I am planning to capture Singapore by mid January. Its port will be vital in my further expansion.

THE PHILIPPINES

We clean up Surigao on Mindanao.

NAVAL MOVEMENT

A Dutch sub is sighted near Djemadja but escapes unharmed. A US sub sets a freighter of mine on fire near Samah. Another US sub misses a freighter near Samah, while a third sub shells a transport near Truk (the transport makes port later).

MALAYA

The last remnants of the 1st Mysore Battalion are eradicated via aerial bombardment. We land at Mersing - over 800 AV in two task forces - all with planning of at least 25 points or more, but I still suffer some casualties while unloading. At least they are not heavily disrupted. There are no British troops present.

We clean out Pontianak, south of Singkawang.

THE PHILIPPINES

Cotabato is captured by two infantry regiments. They will now advance to Cagayan and from there my Mindanao corps will proceed to Malaybalay, where my opponent is concentrating his forces in the mountains.

CHINA

I suffer a massive brain fart, setting my stack to attack at Changsha as soon as they arrive. BIG mistake.

I lose 142 combat squads and 35 engineers. STUPID STUPID STUPID. My troops are horribly disrupted. AV has dropped from 1367 to 800.

If Arnhem counterattacks next turn, I'm in massive trouble.

NAVAL MOVEMENTS

I had sent three destroyer task forces to hunt for the remains of Force Z that wiped out my Ambon task force. One of them finally runs into a Dutch convoy and sink two minelayers, a transport and a freighter. Small consolation.

I think Force Z have retired to Darwin, they'll probably head towards Brisbane or thereabouts for repairs to some of their ships (notably Repulse). I might have a surprise waiting for them.

A Dutch sub is sighted by ASW assets in the Makassar Strait, but escapes. My light forces in the Banda Sea are attacked by Swordfish torpedo bombers near Denpasar. His torpedo bomber assets are completely unscathed, having been pulled from Malaya. I'll have to do something about them.

MALAYA

Mersing is captured. I have 818 AV ashore. 2nd Division is moving south to capture Johore Bharu and seal off Singapore. Armour elements (6th Tank Regiment, 56th Recon Regiment) will rapidly advance to the west and then continue northwards to rapidly clear the railway line along the west coast. The target here is to capture Singapore by 15 January.

CHINA

The feared counterattack at Changsha does not materialise - hallelujah. I've replaced my ground commanders there. Hopefully we can hold. I have 8,700 troops at Lang Son. We bombard, there is one Chinese Corps there, I will attack tomorrow. Ultimate target here is Nanning.

My troops will also reach Wenchow tomorrow.

NAVAL MOVEMENTS

The final day of the year 1941...

A Dutch sub tries to enter the Sulu Sea, but is sighted by our ASW patrol guarding the entrance. One of my submarines placed at Noumea to scope out strategic movement is attacked by two modern US destroyers. They report merchant shipping there. Hmmmm....

[...After Kido Butai had returned to Hiroshima/Kure, I replenished sorties and then split them into two - CV Kaga and CV Akagi set sail for Takao (under great secrecy) where she met up with CVL Zuiho, to form a smaller Air Combat TF (48 Zeroes, 70 Kates and 45 Vals). They set sail along the east coast of the Philippines, hopefully unsighted, with the idea to reach Babeldaob, there to refuel, and then head into the Celebes Sea and finally into the Banda Sea and then to threaten Darwin. At the same time, TF 5 - my Combined Fleet heavy surface group under Tanaka - had rearmed and refuelled at Hong Kong and was waiting at Kendari along with a number of light cruisers and destroyers. Fuel was sent to Kendari.

The other four carriers, CV Hiryu, Soryu, Zuikaku, Shokaku - 72 Zeroes, 90 Kates, 90 Vals - was sent to Truk under extreme radio silence. No search missions - only floatplanes from the escort cruisers. Also sent to Truk was a massive fuel replenishment task force.

The idea with my main Kido Butai group with four carriers was to penetrate the Coral Sea between Stewart Island and the Reef Islands, scope out New Caledonia, then head west to try to attack any shipping heading south to Brisbane/Sydney (hopefully some damaged stragglers from the DEI), then head up north and eventually rejoin the other carriers in the Dutch East Indies and support the invasion of Java (much later).

When the abovementioned sub of mine sighted shipping at Noumea, this main KB group was about two days' sailing away.]

PHILIPPINES

We continue bombing of Clark Field. Troops are all getting into place for the attack, probably in just under a week's time.

CHINA

We attack a Chinese Corps blocking the road from Lang Son to Nanning, inflicting heavy casualties. Intention here is to try to take Nanning.

A new year dawns. Will it herald glory for the Imperial Japanese Empire?

NAVAL MOVEMENTS

My heavy surface action group is attacked by a US sub off Kendari - a torpedo duds - and DD Michishio responds in anger, claiming a deptch charge hit.

My sub off Noumea tries to torpedo an Allied freighter, but misses - she is then brutally attacked by a US submarine...but should survive. She gives intel claiming xAP type ships off Noumea. KB is only one day away! We might bag something nice here...

CHINA

The AVG ambushes a Mary attack on Chinese troops just pushed towards Nanning the turn before, and absolutely cuts them to ribbons. We have cornered Chinese units at Wenchow. We will attack later, bombarding first, hopefully to reduce their supplies.

While trying to recover my disabled squads at Changsha, Arnhem has moved in a LOT of troops - we are attacked by almost 4,000 AV (150,000 troops).

I suffer heavily...losing 700 squads. My stack has been reduced to only 600 AV. Arnhem has really given me a bloody nose here, and it will take a long time to recuperate the losses sustained at Changsha. But I have learnt my lesson.

The consolation here is that with stacking limits it will be impossible for Arnhem to move that massive army in the open - it will just eat through his supply and increase fatigue massively. Oh, and also, the fact that we destroyed another 125 Chinese combat squads. He will find it hard to replace the losses I have been inflicting since 7 December. Once a month's fighting has passed, I shall calculate what the respective side's losses in China look like...

PHILIPPINES

Iba is finally taken, catching the US troops as they are trying to move out, inflicting heavy casualties. The Allies now only have Clark Field, Subic Bay and Bataan in their possession. We will continue bombing the troops at Clark.

NAVAL MOVEMENTS

A Dutch sub takes a shot at one of my destroyers covering a task force unloading supplies at Mersing.

Kido Butai finally makes its appearance after no hostile action since December 7th...they attack an Allied supply convoy, sinking eight Australian cargo ships, a PG and a French minelayer. Now Arnhem knows exactly where Kido Butai is (less Kaga and Akagi, of course).

Lots of action this turn...I was biting my nails.

NAVAL ACTION

Mini KB (Kaga, Akagi, Zuiho) had steamed south through the Banda Sea, closely followed by TF 5, my heavy surface combat force commanded by the daunting Tanaka...I ordered a port attack on Darwin.

We found a LOT of ships - 190 counted - including Allied warships! We score a number of nice bomb hits, including CA Canberra and CL Dragon!

Naval search detects an Allied surface task force steaming south between Moa and Bahar - sighted includes a CA and three DDs! I order mini KB to immediately sail as far as possible to the west to avoid this, remembering full well what happened to CVL Ruyjo...

In the south KB is in range of Brisbane and launched a raid at extreme range...the port is virtually empty (only a small minesweeper, which is sunk) but there are a LOT of troops in town and the flak is heavy...I lose 6 Vals. Main KB will now run up north towards Darwin...190 ships including Allied warships is too good a target to miss out on!

I will now try to swamp the area with TF 5 as well as CLs and DDs from Kendari to catch any attempted runners from Darwin.

CHINA

We continue bombarding Wenchow, since I wanted Pucheng to be taken first by the 102nd Infantry Regiment. 102nd will now march to support offensive operations against Wenchow, if required. Once Wenchow is taken, the Chinese will only retain Pakhoi as a port.

If I thought the previous turn was nerve-wracking, nothing could prepare me for this one...

NAVAL MOVEMENTS

An I-boat FINALLY connects off the West Coast, scoring a torpedo hit on a C2 Cargo freighter. US subs are now off the Japanese Home Islands - they torpedo an Aden-class freighter, but she'll make port. I'll need to sort out my escorts! The same US sub tries to attack another Aden, but is sighted on the surface, apparently out of gun ammunition and breaks off. Lucky escape for my freighter.

Now for the scary bits

My mini KB trying to run away to the west from Allied warships sighted coming in from the north runs smackbang into an ABDA task force of CL De Ruyter, CL Marblehead and two British destroyers...CL Marblehead has survived a number of encounters...I want to sink her!

I nervously watch, fully expecting one of my carriers to be disabled...but my brave destroyers do a fantastic job screening the carriers from combat...CL Abukuma takes two shells but suffers very little damage...

I then thought, phew! lucky escape...but then the same mini KB was intercepted by a large ABDA force consisting of nine destroyers led by CL Tromp...Admiral Doorman crossed the T...I expected disaster...again my brilliant destroyers screen the carriers from combat...CV Kaga does take two 15cm shell hits to her flight deck, but almost no damage is caused...

Having had two lucky escapes, my carrier aircraft launch in search of retribution...two Dutch transports are found, and sunk...they then find the ABDA attack force that had attacked them earlier...and revenge is sweet!

CL Tromp, five destroyers are showing as sunk outright...it looks like the remaining four might sink as well...a lot of the Dutch destroyers were indicated as being dead in the water...BANZAI!

MALAYA

We capture Malacca. Now we only need to capture Kuala Lumpur and I will have an uninterrupted railroad line from Thailand to Johore Bharu. BANZAI!

NAVAL MOVEMENTS

A US sub tries to attack a transport TF off Cam Ranh Bay, but is sighted by escorts. Another US sub is in Japanese Home Waters, luckily the torpedoes dud.

One of my RO-boats off New Caledonia tries to take a shot at an AVP, but is sighted and has to escape. It is later sighted again and takes two depth charge hits, but suffers minimal damage... A US sub is successfully depth-charged near Taliaboe.

A US cargo freighter is torpedoed off Catalina Island.

Mini KB off Darwin has shifted position to be covered by an incoming DD task force (one CL and nine DDs) as well as to be closer to TF 5, which is still steaming along. A port raid is launched on Darwin, and we score some nice hits - ANZAC cruisers are in port! We hit CA Australia, CL Leander and CL Achilles...

CL Nagara with 8 destroyers (83% main gun ammo, 97% torpedoes) is patrolling the western approaches to Darwin with orders to react to any surface shipping...TF 5 (BB Kongo, BB Haruna, six CAs, two CLs, three DDs - fully loaded) is sprinting down to patrol the eastern approaches under Zero air cover...187 ships are still reported at Darwin...

Mini KB will perform another port strike on Darwin tomorrow, any runners will have to deal with the might of the Combined Fleet...Kido Butai racing up along the east coast of Australia is about three days away from Darwin...I aim to make Darwin port his Falaise, a real Hexenkessel...

MALAYA AND SUMATRA

Palembang is swept by fighters and reconned to see what's there...not much.

Recon had indicated a CL and DD in port at Singapore...I thought they might be repairing there...I ordered 90 Betties and Nells to bomb the port...they do not find warships, only two Harbour Defense Motor Launches that are obliterated...we suffer three lost bombers.

PHILIPPINES

Arnhem launches a deliberate attack at Clark Field...but it is bloodily repulsed, suffering 59(377) combat squads and 40(12) engineers...he must be horribly disrupted, we will launch a strong counter-attack tomorrow and hopefully capture Clark Field ahead of schedule...my units have been prepping for Clark Field for a while...

CHINA

We finally attack at Wenchow...but the Chinese are too strong...we'll hold and wait for 102nd Infantry Regiment marching from Pucheng before we attack again...

My troops crossing the river before Nanning launch an automatic shock attack...it could be worse, we get a 1 to 1 and reduce forts to 0, but disruption is high...these troops will now defend until their strength is built up again.

Just north of Kweisui we probe - there is a single Chinese Corps. We have a strong force of 25,000 infantry (777 AV) that will clear these Chinese brigands out and then eventually will continue along the road towards Lanchow...

Herewith the Malaya situation.

I am very happy with my progress here. Within the next three days we will deliver another 30,000 tons of supplies at Johore Bharu.

There is 789 AV at Johore Bharu, 971 AV at Kuala Lumpur, 126 AV at Taiping, and 574 AV at Temuloh - they will all rail to Johore Bharu, rest for a bit, and then 2nd Division (88 prep), Imperial Guards Division (23 prep), and 18th Division (8 prep) will all cross the causeway to Singapore, to be later joined by 5th Division (currently 0 prep for Singapore), artillery, engineers and 25th Army HQ.

From the outset my strategy has been to utilise a heavy concentration of force in specific, concentrated areas.

Singapore was to fall to 25th Army by 20 January 1942 to sustain follow-up invasions of Sumatra and Java with its nice, big, deep port.

The Philippines has gone beyond my expectations, with 14th Army doing well, and I will end up significantly ahead of schedule there.

16th Army has performed adequately in Mindanao and will assist with the capture of Singapore (2nd Division); 38th Division will invade Sumatra soon.

15th Army is (as of 6 January 1942) about 40 miles outside Moulmein. Chiang Mai is 75% towards a Level 2 airbase to assist operations in Burma. Supply is going to be a massive issue here, it's moving very slowly along the secondary roads.

The wolves are closing in on the sheep.

My opponent asked me if I like shooting fish in a barrel...I told him my thirst for ABDA blood won't be quenched anytime soon, at all times the sailors and aviators of the Combined Fleet were rallied by the cry, "Remember the Ryujo...!".

NAVAL MOVEMENTS

Mini KB moves into position for another port strike, it has been augmented by four good destroyers to provide additional protection should a surface vessel break through...

...as pointed out previously, a destroyer task force headed by CL Nagara and then the mighty TF 5 (heavy surface group centred around BB Kongo and BB Haruna) had been sent forward under air cover to secure the western and eastern approaches to Darwin to intercept fleeing shipping.

Arnhem decided to sortie with an ABDA task force headed by Adm Doorman...one RNZN CL, one RAN CL, a two RAN destroyers, one British destroyer, one USN destroyer, one Dutch destroyer and one French destroyer...

They first react into the Nagara flotilla...Doorman crosses the T...the engagement is inconclusive, with some shell hits being traded.

Then the Allied task force runs into TF 5 that's on its way south to take up patrol on Darwin's eastern approach...the BBs and CAs score some good hits, CL Perth is sunk by two Long Lance hits...TF 5 finds the Allied task force again later that night, this time Tanaka has tactical surprise and crosses the T...but the Allied task force still performs well...CL Achilles is sunk, DD Le Triomphant looks like a goner...the Allies inflict heavy damage on DD Asashio, along with CA Atago, CL Isuzu and DD Michishio she runs north for Kendari and will eventually go to Hong Kong for repairs...

Tanaka's TF 5 again finds the Allied task force during daytime...all that's remaining are four destroyers...and all four are sunk.

Later mini KB does not launch its port strike but Vals attack DD Van Ghent as she tries to run back to Darwin...two 250kg SAP bomb hits are scored and she is set ablaze...

The main KB is still steaming northwards, about to turn past Horn Island, and is a day's striking distance from Darwin...here's hoping we can sink a lot of ships in the next few days while my carriers still have sorties...

The butcher's bill for the day appears to be:

CL Perth
CL Achilles
DD Le Triomphant
DD Pillsbury
DD Stuart
DD Voyager
DD Vendetta

Based on ships attacked in previous turns, I believe the following warships are still at Darwin (and damaged):

CA Australia (last seen on fire in Darwin harbour, having taken 5 250kg SAP bombs and two aerial torpedoes)
CA Canberra (took two 250kg SAP bombs in Darwin harbour)
CL Leander (took two 250kg SAP bombs in Darwin harbour)
CL De Ruyter (took three shell hits a few days ago)
CL Marblehead (took one shell hit a few days ago, should still have damage from earlier in the campaign)
CL Dragon (last seen on fire, took two bombs in Darwin harbour)
DD Vampire (last seen on fire near Koepang on 4 January)
DD Electra (last seen on fire with heavy damage, took a bomb hit in Darwin harbour)

At the very least I want to sink these, either in harbour or while attempting to make a run for it. If I can sink all of these, Allied surface assets will be completely absent in the Dutch East Indies which will considerable de-risk my planned invasion of Java.

BC Repulse and BB Prince of Wales have definitely escaped to fight another day.

Subs

A US sub tries to take a shot at a transport convoy on its way to Hong Kong to pick up 38th Division which is going to invade Sumatra...a deptch charge hit is claimed by a torpedo boat...another US sub fires four torpedoes at the same convoy, but they don't explode...yet another US sub attacks my Hong Kong convoy, but is sighted by the escorts...there are a lot of US subs near Hong Kong...ASW assets will be despatched here...

My dedicated ASW CVE Hosho task force sights a sub near the Home Islands, will close in and hopefully score a hit or drive the sub from the home waters...

MALAYA

We capture Port Dickson. There are no Allied troops left in the entire Malaya peninsula. We commence ground attacks with IJAAF bombers on Singapore, even at 15,000 feet there is a lot of flak.

1st Raiding Regiment performs a parachute assault on Port Blair! They have been prepping since early December. I've sent a Sentai of experienced (avg exp 71) Ki-43-Ic Oscars there to prevent AVG LRCAP'ing my transport aircraft...we will fly in a IJNAF Air Unit and base Mavis's here for long-range naval search, an early warning base to cover Allied operations from the Indian Ocean...

Georgetown will be my Indian Ocean submarine base.

PHILIPPINES

Things are going fantastic here. At Clark Field we carry off a 2-1 attack, reducing fortifications to 0. We'll take Clark tomorrow, 7 January 1942. We'll then recuperate our forces before moving to Bataan.

Interesting to note here is that Allied defense was adjusted be poor preparation, poor experience and (NB) poor supply. I can only assume that Arnhem has managed to stockpile all his supplies at Bataan. That said, we captured a lot of supply intact at Manila.

CHINA

Some proving attacks here. I forget to stop an armoured car regiment, they cross the river towards Changteh and shock attack, suffering serious losses. At least we now know what's at Changteh.

A bombardment attack at Nanyang discovers 1606 Chinese AV. Arnhem has a lot of troops at Changsha and Nanyang. I'm assuming the Nanyang troops have been pulled from the Loyang-Chengchow area.

1st Army continues to advance towards Sian. We are looking to possibly cut off large numbers of Chinese troops on the open plains of north China.

In north China, a strong infantry force pushes out a Chinese Corps from the mountains north of Kweisui. This force will ultimately target Lanchow...

I will post an update tonight after work detailing total losses so far, as well as what my industry currently looks like.

Thus far things have been going at or ahead of schedule.

Major setbacks I've suffered thus far include:

1) Losing CVL Ryujo to CL Boise
2) Having my entire Ambon invasion task force obliterated by Force Z
3) Attacking at Changsha, I lost almost a thousand squads in total here
