Just want to make sure - there's no point in encircling routed units, right?
They'll slip away no matter what I do...?

I might be wrong but i beleive if you come into contact with them, they will route again (dispalce?), if you encircle them without contacting the next turn if they dont recover you shatter them when you do contact them

Have to do a two stage process. First, surround without going next to them. Next turn, mop up the remains.

Routed unit if surrounded and stay routed will automatically surrender. If they make whatever dice check then you have to move in and kill them. At least, this is my understanding of the rules.

Oh, that's a bit different than I thought.
So I should just treat routed units the exact same way as normal units with regards to encircling?:
First turn: Encircle and pray the circle holds through the enemy turn (I assume routed units cannot break loose on their own - unless some dice roll is successfull and they escape from their routed staus...).
Next turn: Knock them down.

Yes, routed units cannot do anything on their own, and will "run away" with more losses and morale hits. If they are stacked with a non routed unit, they will stay in place. On their next turn, if isolated, and they don't pass a "morale" check (not sure what it is, and don't feel like trying to find it atm), they will surrender before you can do anything. If they pass the check, they will be on the map, just waiting for you to go up and attack them.

I find in what I would call more advanced play, you can watch the way they route, which is towards an HQ, and pretty well "herd" a big group of units in that direction. The hardest part is moving in a big enough encirclement so they stay in place and you get easy surrenders.
