Naval movements

Dutch torpedo boats intercept my Oosthaven invasion TF; in low visibility they score no hits for the loss of three.

Recon had identified a CL and DD in Singapore's port, so I launched Betties and Nells from Singkawang - they only found two small minesweepers.

Light forces land at Morotai and Tandjoengeslor.

Singapore

76 Sallies bomb ground troops at Singapore. Japanese AV at Singapore is now over 2000; Southern Army HQ is at Mersing, only two hexes away. I have put the best leaders in place, and have given the order for a deliberate attack to be carried out tomorrow, 21 January 1942!

Dutch East Indies

I am continuing small landings in the Dutch East Indies. 90th Infantry Regiment has 25 planning points for Tarakan, and will land there soon.

China

My 25,000-strong infantry force in north China inflicts heavy casualties on two Chinese Corps. They will continue moving along the road towards Lanchow.

1st Army (1600 AV) is about three days out of Sian. Once they capture that city, they will march southeast towards Nanyang.

I made some mistakes in this turn...

Naval movements

I had sent 13 DMS minesweepers to Bataan from Singkawang a few turns ago...the intention was for them to sweep it once it had fallen...but I forgot to redirect them after Bataan held out a bit longer. As a result, the Manila Bay coastal defense guns were still active...and I paid for it. I eventually lose six DMS's. Ah well, at least they managed to clear 288 mines at Bataan, can't be too many left.

A US sub scores a hit on my invasion fleet from Oosthaven, a torpedo badly damages an already-damaged transport - she later sinks. My escorts retaliate, claiming a single DC hit.

Singapore

A massive bombing strike on Singapore in clear skies by 78x IJN bombers from Singkawang and 105x IJAAF bombers from Johore Bharu. There is a lot of flak, a lot of bombers are damaged.

We then launch a massive attack at Singapore. The fortifications are reduced to 2, on the plus side we destroy 132 combat squads to our own loss of 161. This is a battle of attrition that I can afford.

Sumatra

IJN paratroopers drop in to capture Praboemoelih, next to Palembang. 38th Division at Oosthaven is already in strategic mode and ready to rail up to Praboemoelih.

Dutch East Indies

Morotai is captured by a light landing force.

Naval movements

The DMS survivors from Bataan start sweeping Manila harbour; it's now completely clear.

A Dutch sub fires a spread at a TB of mine in the invasion fleet returning from Oosthaven to Singkawang, but misses. A second Dutch sub is sighted by the same invasion fleet.

Darwin

The 25 Betties go in again, claiming 8 250kg bomb hits. DD Van Ghent and DD Paul Jones are still afloat. Nothing has passed through the Torres Strait yet, but my sixteen submarines lurking there will wait to ensure the Dutch East Indies are blocked off from southern Australia.

Philippines

Here was some good news. A ground strike went in at Bataan; we then attacked and overwhelmed the defenders, with over 50,000 American and Filipino soldiers surrendering. At Subic Bay a Philippine Infantry Division also surrendered to an attack by 65th Brigade. All of Luzon is now Japanese. BANZAI!

I will move my troops to Manila and rest them there to recuperate. 14th Army assetson Luzon will now start planning for Java.

Singapore

We conduct a bombardment attack with all artillery units, resting the infantry units. I get very good results, 18 Commonwealth squads are destroyed. I will bombard another turn, and then deliberate attack again on 24 January - AV should by then be back up to around 1900.

Sumatra

38th Division is at Praboemoelih, and unpacking from strategic mode, and will move on Palembang in three days' time. Recon indicates my opponent has bunkered in at Palembang, 9 Allied units totalling 16,000 troops have been spotted there.

Dutch East Indies

We capture Loewoek, in the Celebes.

Burma

15th Army waits at Pegu for supplies to catch up (sigh). Recon indicates the AVG in Burma is at Toungoo, with the AVG in China at Changsha.

Naval movements

Small landing forces go ashore at Taytay and Lolobato.

An invasion force hits Tarakan - 90th Infantry Regiment, which has 27 planning points. The warship escorts suppress the coastal defense guns, but some hits are suffered amongst the invasion force. None are serious though. 90th Inf Rgt goes ashore in good order with lots of supply. They will assault Tarakan tomorrow with the assistance of level bomber support.

Minesweepers clear another 120 mines at Bataan.

Singapore

More heavy bombing raids. We bombard again, destroying more Commonwealth squads. IJ Army AV is up to 1750, we will do one more bombardment attack before another deliberate attack on 25 January, by which time we'll have double the supply required.

Darwin

25 Betties go in for a bombing run again, scoring six hits and sinking a minesweeper and a small freighter.

Burma

Still waiting for supply to catch up to Pegu. I am in the process of moving air support battalions to Chiang Mai, which is now 27% up to a level 3 airbase. Thanks to aircraft losses being low, I've managed to upgrade two Sentai to shiny new Ki-43-Ic Oscars. Three Sentai will move to Chiang Mai to contest the skies in Burma:

1st Sentai - 42 Ki-43-Ic Oscar - average experience 72
11th Sentai - 42 Ki-43-Ic Oscar - average experience 73
59th Sentai - 30 Ki-43-Ic Oscar - average experience 71

That's 114 Oscars with pilots all above 70 experience. Recon suggests there are currently 21 AVG fighters at Toungoo. Hopefully numerical superiority will assist in attriting the AVG.

NW of Paotow is an infantry force of 740 AV that is harassing two Chinese Corps on the road towards Lanchow.

1st Army with 1628 AV is east of Sian, and will cross the river to the southwest. There is one Chinese unit in the wooded hex there. There are sixteen Chinese units at Sian.

Nanyang appears to have been abandoned to reinforce Sian. A division is marching north from Sinyang to investigate.

790 AV is marching first south then west to cross the river southwest of Chengchow (there are 4 Chinese units there). 593 AV will march due west from Anyang. 210 AV is marching west from Kaoping on Tsiaotso. I'm hoping to cut off any Chinese units left at Loyang, Chengchow and Nanyang.

A good turn for my submarines!

Naval movements

Bataan is swept clear. Manila is now open and in business!

A Japanese sub scores two torpedo hits on a Dutch coastal minelayer near Lingga, sinking it. A Glen-boat sights a tanker convoy in the Fiji area and both torpedoes hit a US 14,054-ton tanker, sinking her! There are more tankers in the convoy, it's heading east, my I-boat is vectored to follow and hopefully have another bite at the apple, with the Glen floatplane searching ahead.

And then if that was not enough good news for one turn, DD Shiratsuyu spots a US submarine outside Saigon and manages to press her attack - scoring four hits with Type 95 Mod-2 depth charges, the sub is claimed sunk! BANZAI!

Dutch East Indies

We send in a massive aerial ground attack by IJN level bombers at Tarakan. Our initial assault is unsuccessful, however. Our disruption is not high, we will try again tomorrow.

A destroyer TF bombards Ambon before an invasion TF unloads two Naval Guard Units there. Another SNLF is being loaded at Kendari and once unloaded there will assist in the attack.

A small force lands at Culion.

Singapore

96 Sallies go in at 10,000 feet, hopefully they are adding fatigue and disruption to the Commonwealth units. My artillery then bombards, and three more infantry squads are destroyed.

I have ordered a deliberate attack tomorrow. I estimate that raw AV will be about 1850 Japanese versus 910 Allied - or 2:1. Hopefully we can get a good die roll. 25th Army at Singapore now has over 200 IJA Engineer and IJA Cmbt Engr 41 squads!

Naval movements

An invasion force lands at Ambon; more light forces land at San Jose (west of Iloilo).

Dutch East Indies

I send in a heavy naval bombers raid on Tarakan; but the Dutch hold out by the skin of their teeth for a 3 to 1 (87:22 - if Japanese adjusted assault was just one more it would have been a 4 to 1 and the base would have fallen).

At Ambon I have two SNLFs ashore, I am bringing a third one to ensure quick capture of the base.

At Djambi something strange happened. I had reconned Djambi, found it was clear, and the SNLF paras were sent in. But judging by the combat modifiers, Arnhem had just moved two garrison battalions in. Needless to say the Jap paras were surprised. They will soon be up to 30 AV but supply will be an issue, let's hope they can hold out. South of them, 38th Division has started making its move across the river towards Palembang.

Singapore

The most exciting thing this turn is a massive assault at Singapore, which reduces fortifications to 1. One of the Aussie brigades got really banged up by 2nd Division. I have disruption of around 40 to 50; will continue bombarding to try to convert some of his disabled squads to destroyed squads and look to attack again in a few days' time. I have revised my target date for capture of Singapore to 31 January.

China

The 740 AV infantry corps in the far north inflicts heavy losses on two unfortunate Chinese Corps.

Frustrating day today.

Naval movements

We continue the landing at San Jose; the second invasion force reaches Ambon, but an xAKL is sunk by by the 150mm CD battery.

Another SNLF lands at Ternate.

Singapore

Heavy air attacks and a bombardment attack result in only 2 destroyed Commonwealth combat squads.

Philippines

We are mopping up the Philippine islands now that Luzon and Mindanao are entirely Japanese. San Jose is captured.

Dutch East Indies

The focus now is to clean up the Celebes and Moluccas and all other Dutch islands to isolate Java. I have no fear of surface action in this theatre at the moment, given the carnage inflicted at Darwin, unless he runs ships all the way up from Perth, but I don't think he has much there. I have lots of subs cordoning off the Torres Strait who should hopefully give early warning.

However - the Dutch troops at Tarakan manage to pull off a 1 to 2 after narrowly avoiding a 4 to 1 the previous turn. Drat! We suffer very few casualties though, will continue attacking tomorrow.

Allied submarines seem to have disappeared.

Dutch East Indies

Another ground strike against the plucky Dutch defenders at Tarakan. The subsequent attack is too much for them and Tarakan finally falls. I now have a convenient refuelling point for my warships in the Dutch East Indies. Damage to the facilities was minimal - 89(1) for Oil, and 89(1) for the Refinery. Three Dutch HDMLs are scuttled along with a Do-24K-1 flying boat.

Ternate is captured, again we destroy a Do-24K-1 here...Arnhem has not been pulling them out prior to capture.

At Ambon my shock attack is highly successful, the entire Dutch garrison surrenders on the first attack.

Singapore

Heavy bomber raids seem almost ineffectual, I hope its driving up fatigue and disruption. A bombardment attack destroys three squads and four vehicles. I might attack again on 29 January 1942.

My opponent's main combat-ready forces remaining at Singapore are estimated as follows:

9th Indian Division - about 300 AV (experience should be just over 40)
11th Indian Division - about 300 AV (experience should be just over 40)
22nd Australian Brigade - about 85 AV (experience should be just over 50)
2nd Loyal Battalion - abpit 23 AV (experience should be just over 45)

All the rest are pretty banged up.

Herewith estimated ship losses for both sides, thus far I am very happy, my surface fleet is very much intact:

CV/CVL

So far, only CVL Ryujo, which was sunk by CL Boise on the third day of the war.

BB/BC

BB Tennessee
BB Pennsylvania
BB Nevada

CA/CL

CA Australia
CA Canberra
CL Marblehead
CL Mauritius
CL Perth
CL Achilles
CL Leander
CL Java
CL Tromp
CL De Ruyter

No IJN cruisers sunk yet.

DD

20x Allied DD are claimed; IJN losses are 7x DD and 1x TB.

SS

Six Allied SS are claimed sunk - one by air action, the rest by depth charges.

The Japanese have lost one SS - hit a mine on the first day of the war at Singapore - and four midget submarines.

AP

The IJN has lost three xAPs, all to submarine action.

We are claiming sixteen Allied xAPs sunk - including the large xAP President Madison and xAP Rochambeau - most of them sunk at Darwin.

AK

For the Allies, 20x xAKs and 37 xAKLs are claimed sunk.

The Japanese have so far lost one AK, 13x xAKs and 5x xAKLs.

TK

Thus far the Japanese have not lost a single tanker.

The Allies have lost 5x TK and 2x YO.

Arnhem and I discussed our House Rules again. We are trying to play this game as historical as possible, this is DaBigBabes scenario 28 "C" with the reduced cargo limits and we're playing with PDU "off".

We've just reconfirmed our house rules and I've taken out the ones that have become obsolete since we started the game. To confirm our current house rules in play at the moment are as follows:

(These House Rules were mostly derived by Fletcher a few years back. The Monsoon Rule was based on rules set up by John 3rd. The origin of these rules are therefore gratefully acknowledged.)

General
- IJAAF units must operate with IJAAF aviation support present and IJNAF must operate with IJNAF aviation support;
- The only IJAAF plane that may be used in an ASW role is the Ki-51 (to reflect historical use);
- Japanese subs may only be equipped with the Glen;
- No partial parachute deployments (i.e. one unit one target);
- No submarine invasion – except for Marine Raiders on US SST submarines
- All PT boats in a hex must be in the same TF;
- 4E bombers cannot operate on Naval Attack below 10,000 feet (but are free to operate at any altitude for other attacks);
- 4E bombers – excluding B-29s – cannot operate on Ground Attack in hexes that have Allied units in them (i.e. close air support); B-29s cannot be used on Ground Attack at all (but may be used on Airfield, Port or City Attack);
- No strategic bombing by either side until July 1943; in the Dutch East Indies strategic bombing may only take place from 1 Jan 1944;
- No night bombing if moonlight is less than 50% (except B-29s, who are assumed to have ground-mapping radar);
- Minimum altitude for night bombing is 3,000 feet;
- Fighters may only fly sweeps or CAP at best or second best maneuver altitude bands;
- Japanese surface ships cannot transit Malacca Strait until Singapore has fallen;
- The atomic bomb may not be used on Tokyo;
- Commonwealth land and air units may only operate to liberate Commonwealth possessions as well as the Dutch East Indies – i.e. British, Indian, Dutch, Australian and New Zealand units are limited to Australia, New Zealand, India, Burma, Malaya, New Guinea, New Britain, the Solomons, New Hebrides, Fiji, Tonga, Samao etc and the whole of the Dutch East Indies)

Monsoon Rule
- From 15 May to 15 October each year in all jungles and mountain hexes in Burma and also Kohima-Ledo-Imphal area the following restrictions:
o No shock or deliberate attacks in jungle hexes in the area during this time;
o Deliberate attacks still allowed in non-jungle (open) hexes;
o Bombardment attacks allowed everywhere;
o Movement into friendly or non-occupied hexes allowed;
o Aircraft flying from bases in this region during this time is a factor of its size*10% (e.g. if Chiang Mai is a level 4 airbase, it can only fly 40% of its aircraft, so Rest must be set to 60%)
o No carrier aircraft strikes on Burma from the Bay of Bengal during this time (but carrier aircraft can still strike Bengal, Northern India, Malaya from carriers in the Gulf of Bengal)

China
- No industry bombing in Chinese bases by either side, but bombing Manpower allowed;
- Maximum of 4 squadrons of US 4E bombers may operate from Chinese bases, but only from level 6 airbases (or higher), and there must be American aviation support present;
- No Chinese ground or air units may leave its borders except those assigned to the Chinese Expeditionary Force in Burma;
- The NCAC (Northern Combat Area Command) shall be limited to 4x Chinese Corps and one Chinese fighter squadron, and may enter Burma now that Rangoon has fallen;
- The AVG may operate in Burma and China only.

Kwantung Army
- Units must pay PPs to cross the Kwantung border;
- The Japanese player may buy out artillery units to a maximum of 1 artillery regiment for every 3 infantry regiments who have already paid the PPs to exit (i.e. no stripping or arty units only);
- No Kwantung HQs may be bought out until one of the following events:
o 1944;
o Invasion of the Marianas;
o Liberation of Rangoon;
o Liberation of any base in the DEI with a level 4 airbase or larger.
- No air units may be removed from Kwantung until 1 June 1942, and from then only one daitai may be moved per month (but subject always to a minimum of 4 fighter daitai and 8 bomber daitai); this does not prevent offensive air operations from Kwangtung on targets in China;
- If the Japanese player decides to invade the Soviet Union, he must invade Soviet territory in an unoccupied hex to activate and may then only begin offensive operations a week later (i.e. no strategic surprise to reflect superior Soviet intelligence assets in Japanese government);
- Once Soviets are activated, no Japanese unit in Kwantung may get a HQ reassignment, except isolated units that can be evacuated by sea.

Dutch East Indies
- Dutch air units cannot be disbanded nor can they be withdrawn;
- Dutch surface vessels may operate in Indian Ocean waters or between Australia and New Guinea, but not in the Pacific;
- Dutch submarines can only operate between the South China Sea and northern Australia (not in the Pacific);
- Garrison requirements must be observed by the Allied player;
- IJA units need a minimum of 25 planning points to amphibiously land at/parachute into an enemy-held DEI base (not needed for IJN units)

Australia
- Japan may only invade Australia once Timor, Ambon, Kendari, Mindanao, Batavia and Soerabaja have been captured (to reflect secure lines of supply) and I have saved a reserve of 3,000 political points; these political points must be kept in reserve until either:
o Capture of all ports in northern Australia (Port Hedland; Broome; Derby; Wyndham; Darwin); or
o Capture of either Perth, or Sydney, or Brisbane (strategic long-range operation);
- IJA units invading Australia must have at least 80 planning points;
- If Australia is invaded by the Japanese, the Allied player may not spend PPs on anything except sending forces to Australia by any means or medium, whether land or air (with the exception of reassigning leaders);
- Australian CMF units may only operate in Australia and Papua New Guinea;

India and Ceylon
- No restricted Allied unit in India may change its command area until 1 January 1943. PPs must be paid in order for units to leave India (to reflect the large number of British troops required in India to suppress the “Quit India” movement as well as the Indian National Army guerrilla activities);
- If Japanese forces cross the border into India, British and Commonwealth units may only spend PPs to send reinforcements to India;
- The Japanese player will need a reserve of 4,000 political points in order to invade India, this must be maintained until the capture of Calcutta, Bombay, Colombo or Trincomalee;
- Any IJA units invading India or Ceylon must have at least 80 planning points;

Thailand
- Thai ground forces may invade Burma but are limited to east of the Salween river (i.e. only Mergui, Victoria Point, Moulmein);
- US ground forces may not enter Thailand, but US air forces are able to bomb Thailand (USA never declared war on Thailand).

Royal Navy
- Until 1 September 1942 no RN capital ships (CV, CVL, BB or BC) may operate in the Pacific (except for repairs, transit to ports in the US/return from them);
- From 1 January 1943 a single capital ship may operate in the Pacific (reflecting HMS Victorious in the Solomons campaign);
- From 1 January 1945 no restriction, Royal Navy may operate freely in the Pacific once assigned to Pacific Fleet under US command.

Other than the arty policy, seem pretty good set.  Arty isn't so cheap to buy out any more, I think that restriction is now obsolete.

Fortunately I am blessed with an opponent who is also willing to try and play this game as historically as possible!

I know that I am in for a lot of hurt and anguish as Japanese player since I'm playing with PDU off...I have lots of daitai that start as Nates and end as Nates - in 1945.

One thing I'm enjoying about this mod is how much slower the tempo is. It takes a looooong time to repair, never mind increase, base facilities. Engineers in DBB-C are at a real scarcity. I captured Cagayan two days into the war. I only managed to have the airfield fully repaired three weeks later.

This really makes planning your invasions and ultimate strategy so much more important. You need to realise that you're not going to turn a level 0 airbase into a level 4 overnight.

You also never have enough aviation support where you need it.

These House Rules, while attempting to keep things as historically viable as possible, do have certain adverse effects, however.

For example, once the Monsoon kicks in in Burma, I know I have a period of five or so months to rest, recuperate and build up existing bases there.

I also know that my oil centres in the DEI are safe from Allied bombing until at least 1 January 1944.

By the same token, my opponent Arnhem knows that it is highly unlikely that I will invade India or Australia, given the extremely onerous requirements before I'm able to do so (3,000 planning points in reserve and any IJA unit invading needs 80 planning points), and he will be able to deploy troops elsewhere.

That being said - it is now 27 January 1942 in our game and my political points stockpile is currently just over 2,000 - never say never.  At this rate an invasion of Australia might be on in late March 1942 still utilising the Japanese early war amphibious bonus!

However, any possible operation in Australia would require the invasion of Java first. This requires the capture of Singapore first to provide a nice deep port to sustain this.

The destruction of surface combat vessels in this theatre (two CAs, about four or five CLs, and twenty DDs) really, really makes me consider the northern Australia invasion as a viable option. The ability to cover this invasion(s) with land-based air assets from Timor, Ambon and Kendari - gold. I would be able to effectively prevent any form of amphibious resupply of those ports (Port Hedland, Broome, Derby, Wyndham and Darwin) with my overwhelming surface vessel and aerial assets able to be concentrated in the area.

If I were to seriously contemplate northern Australia, I'd have to start prepping units by 1 February (I find on average my infantry divisions accrue about 1.5 planning points per day average, so for 80 planning points, 53 days plus buffer makes for 60 days required).

So I'll have to make up my mind soon if I plan to invade Australia with the amphibious bonus

That being said - with aerial and surface supremacy in the area - the amphibious bonus becomes irrelevant.

With regards to the Solomons - which I will be embarking on in February - I have 4th Division (at Ponape ) almost 80 prepped for Port Moresby, 144th Infantry Regiment is at Truk prepping for Rabaul (about 60 planning points). Full Kido Butai is escorting a massive resupply convoy on its way to Truk. Also going to Truk is the entire Combined Fleet - amongst them eight BBs. There are AKE's at Truk now able to reload those BB's main guns.

Things are going to heat up in the Solomons pretty soon

Naval movements

One of my I-boats sitting in the Torres Strait fires two torpedoes at a minelayer, but misses.

In the Philippines, landing forces go ashore at Boac and Cebu.

Singapore

More heavy air attacks, and another bombardment attack, yields only a small effect.

Palembang

38th Division crosses the river into Palembang, and achieves a 1 to 19 on the shock attack. Fortunately I am facing low experience units, I only love 7 squads destroyed but the rest are pretty disrupted.

DEI

Following the fall of Tarakan, I forgot to update my level bombers at Kendari's orders, so they continued on Ground Attack - one squadron attacked the remnants that fled Tarakan, another squadron decided to bomb Soerabaja. Ah well, at least I got some recon on Soerabaja.

China

I have added another infantry regiment to my forces at Wenchow, we achieve a 1 to 1 and reduce forts to 0. Hopefully it will fall in the next turn.

I am busy with a secret operation in northern China, one aspect of which sees me moving on Tsiaotso, achieving a 2 to 1 to reduce forts to 0.

Burma

We capture Rangoon with all facilities intact. I'll hang tight here for a while - once again waiting for supply to catch up...

M'kay, I gave your opponent some Babes hints on this and that, so now it's your turn. Just so you know, nothing I say is a priori, it's only a comment on a posted result, or a general comment like this one.

As you know, Japan has this early war unload bonus (which I hate to utter death. If there's one thing I could change in the code, it would be this, because I know why it was done in the first place, but know just how to do the exact same thing with data, but there it is, so ... ). But once it's gone, some serious consideration has to be given to those xAKs that were designated -t, and get them back into the cargo schlepping mode.

Now, there's a few Classes that upgrade to AKs (without the little x in front) and a few more that can convert to this. Most people have no clue what this means, but you are a Babes guy, so ... AKs (without the x) provide load/unload bonuses. if you have an AK and do the -t option, it becomes identical to an AP; all the load/unload bonuses, but configured more for troops. Can tell you more, but not on an open forum where preteens live. PM coming.

Cebu is invaded, and later falls. A US sub near Bataan fires two torpedoes at one of my minelaying subs, but misses.

We bomb Palembang with naval level bombers; more Betties discover a Dutch ship near Kendari which is promptly sunk with two aerial torpedoes.

Sallies go in to bomb Singapore again, but cause little damage. A follow-up bombardment does little.

We attack at Wenchow - but disappointingly achieve a 1 to 5. We're going to be in for the long haul here then...

My elite infantry corps marching on the secondary road in northern China towards Lanchow puts the hurt on the shell of a Chinese Corps, which is destroyed by attrition.

Also in China, we capture Chengchow, inflicting heavy losses on the 24th Group Army HQ. A first attack at Tsiaotso brings the forts down to 0.

I am busy springing a nasty trap in China

As part of the deception I allowed 116th Division to be sacrificed in Nanyang to firstly provide an idea of forces there and secondly give my opponent confidence. All will be revealed soon.
