What do you do with small aircraft squads? If they are withdrawn do they go somewhere and combine with other units? Wondering how to get my CV plane count up.

You can resize carrier squadrons; there is a "No Resize Allowed" button you have to click; it will change to "Resize to fit ship"
if you click again (twice) you can decide the exact size of the

This obviously constrained by the size of the carrier and the number of squadrons already there

As long as you are at port, the resize will happen next turn;

that said, it might take some time to replenish planes (depending on pool I guess); also, they will arrive in damaged condition

You can do it the same turn by following this:

Place the carrier in an air TF. Resize the air unit as described above. Disband the TF. The air unit should have resized. For some reason it doesn't work all the time, but I'd say >90% of the time it will work. Then you can add/substract planes and pilots immediately.

A little off-topic:

is it possible to resize those squadrons that are defined as "will resize to xx in mmm/yy" ?

so far I have had no luck, clicking on the resize button will not move it to "resize to fit ship" or allow to manually change

there's also Nationality & Date restrictions to carrier air-sqn resizes.
