Singapore finally falls to a shock assault by rested Japanese troops, bringing an end to the very long siege.

Almost 50,000 Allied troops surrender; the base facilities at Singapore are intact.

The deep port at Singapore will be very useful during the upcoming Java campaign...troops will be rested but are already planning for future targets.

Elsewhere we reinforce Koepang with another SNLF and will attack tomorrow; we land troops at Baybay on Leyte (cleaning up the last Allied resistance in the Philippines)...

Batavia is again swept but is clear of Dutch fighters, for some reason my bombers decided not to fly...oh well, let's hope they fly tomorrow and bomb these Dutch bombers and fighters at Batavia.

Two uncoordinated sweeps go in at Lashio, where I know just over 20 AVG fighters are...no CAP is up. I'm toying with the idea of a sweep...

In China, an additional 400 AV is about a day or two out of Wenchow - Arnhem will get a nasty surprise there.

At Nanyang, after a day's rest, we conduct a massive shock attack, which reduces fortifications to 0. We suffer some heavy casualties, but we've disabled a lot of Chinese squads who are very low on supplies. We will conduct a bombardment attack tomorrow before looking to carry out another shock attack to kill off as many Chinese troops as possible.

The capture of Singapore and the surrender of almost 50,000 troops has resulted in quite a large swing in VPs - from a position where it was more or less 1:1 a day ago, the score is now 1.5:1 in favour of the Japanese.

Not that score is important, the goal is to do better than the Japanese did in real life.

Another positive is that I've been very stingy with political points, so much so that I currently have a stockpile of over 3,000. This means I can invade Australia, should I wish to do so (in terms of our house rules) - of course, first I have to secure Java first (again, in terms of house rules, an invasion of Australia can only take place once the entire Mindanao, Kendari, Ambon, Timor, Singapore and Java have been conquered).

If I want to invade India, I'd have to stockpile an additional 1,000 PPs.

Another option is to buy out two experienced, heavy infantry divisions from Manchukuo for usage elsewhere. A strong focus of mine is China, if I can make some strong inroads here early I can release a lot of LCUs to reinforce my perimeter in the South.

Decisions, decisions...

9th Division (currently attached to 3rd Army in Manchukuo) has 80 exp and 437 AV and would be the first division to be bought.

14th Division (currently attached to 6th Army in Manchukuo) has 80 exp and 423 AV.

Having these two divisions show up somewhere where they are not expected could be a nasty surprise to my opponent.

On the other hand...

...these two units could be perfect candidated for my Rapid Reaction Force.

The idea is as follows:

3x Asama Maru-class xAPs, 2x Brazil Maru-class xAPs, 2x Heian Maru-class xAPs, 2x Buenos Aires Maru xAPs, and the Yasukuni Maru-class xAP.

We then have ten transports that have a troop carrying ability of 37,630 and cargo capacity of 12,133. Also, the slowest of these is 18 knots - i.e. at mission speed we are talking 9 hexes per day - and they all have endurance of at least 10,700.

The 9th and 14th Divisions require troop-lift of just under 30,000 and cargo lift of about 3,000 - a perfect fit for our transports which will carry around 9,000 supplies in addition.

This Rapid Reaction Force would be heavily escorted by CAs and DDs and accompanied by CVLs.

Any Allied invasion of the perimeter, once it comes in the second half of 1942, will then potentially be met by this force reinforcing a contested base.

I'm finally back up to date, having failed to post over two weeks' worth of results.

Below is a screenshot summarising the current position in terms of bases held, the date is 5 March 1942. The Philippines has been entirely cleared, there are no enemy troops left, only two minor unoccupied islands are still Allied.

In the Dutch East Indies Palembang is about to fall - after that, the rest of Sumatra should follow quickly (I have two elite IJA divisions and two tank regiments there who will roll up defenders quickly (in theory)).

Java is about to be invaded, the initial invasion force will only be two and a half divisions going ashore at Kalidjati. My opponent has been very shy with his aircraft on Java, I am trying to lure them out to play. Recon of northern Java indicates that he is concentrating his defense at Bandoeng, which is a mountain hex. I will look to isolate the Dutch defenders here and maintain a long siege with minimal assets, my goal here is to take Batavia and Soerabaja as quickly as possible.

In Burma the AVG was dealt a bloody nose when my elite Oscar jocks shot down thirty for no loss on 4 March 1942. The AVG in total has now lost about 60 planes and has vacated its previous home at Lashio. Chiang Mai is almost built up to a level 4 airbase, I should have air supremacy in the Burma theatre shortly.

Quite an action-filled turn...I had some good luck and my opponent had some good luck...

Invasion of Java

During nighttime, a heavy bombardment force I'd sent to Batavia to either engage or cripple Dutch surface forces remaining in north Java (and as a plus also shut down Batavia's airfield and hopefully cause some casualties) succeeds...well, sort of. They run into five Dutch torpedo boats on their way to Kalidjati three separate times...but no hits are scored. Oh, BB Kongo manages to collide with CL Natori - ouch. Damage is not too bad though (flotation damage for both of around 11/12) and they'll be repaired at Singapore.

The bombardment force then shells Batavia, and hits it really hard, that's a large airfield heavily damaged. DD Urakaze hits a mine for her troubles, but is not too badly damaged (engine and flotation both around 30) and should make Singapore.

Arnhem had a sub at Kalidjati that takes two shots at at my invasion convoy carrying the elite 5th Division (477 AV, 94xp) but no luck. The five Dutch torpedo boats from Batavia make a run on this convoy, but my destroyers screen the transports well, no hits are scored, but there is another collision - a PB collides with a DMS, but suffers very little damage.

5th Division steps off at Kalidjati in good order, the next morning over thirty Dutch level bombers come in at low level. I had Zeroes covering the invasion task force but they were at 20,000 feet, and could not get down in time; one of the Dutch bombers scores a hit with a 300kg bomb on an Aden freighter; she goes down later in the turn.

My good luck comes in here, my Zero cover were now at the perfect altitude to engage 16 Banshee dive-bombers arriving next, and they are slaughtered, not a single A-24 gets through.

A third wave of thee level bombers is also massacred; a fourth wave (again three level bombers) manages to get in underneath the Zeroes but score no hits.

The same US sub off Kalidjati is sighted by ASW escorts, a solid depth charge hit is claimed by DD Yugiri. My opponent had also laid a minefield at Kalidjati but my destroyers quickly cleared it.

My Zeroes have been ordered to CAP the invasion fleets at 10,000 feet as opposed to 20,000 feet tomorrow - clear skies are expected. No Dutch fighters came out to play. Recon indicates almost fifty fighters and forty bombers at Bandoeng. What is of interest here is that the Dutch level bombers attacked with only two 300kg bombs each - Bandoeng is only a level 3 airfield, so his bombers are unable to carry their normal ordnance. I do not know where his torpedo bombers are, I think if they are also not operating from level 4 airfields they won't be able to use torpedoes, but I won't risk it.

My second wave arrives at Kalidjati tomorrow with 146th Infantry Regiment, two engineer regiments, three artillery regiments and 16th Army HQ. My third wave will be 18th Division (still at Singapore).

Battle of Palembang

Some great news here. First a hundred Sallies pound the battered Allied defenders at Palembang. The ensuing attack results in the capture of PAlembang and quite heavy casualties inflicted. The fantastic news is that Palembang is captured virtually undamaged - oil is 864(36) and the refinery 980(40). Combine this with the capture of Magwe in Burma (300 oil and 100 refinery captured intact) and it's a very good day indeed for the hungry Japanese industrial machine.

BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

China

A heavy shock attack on fleeing defenders of Nanyang results in very heavy casualties for the out-of-supply Chinese. One of my divisions has captured Patung, which is only 200 miles from Chungking! The potential is here to build it up into quite a strong airbase...

And the bad luck...

Kido Butai had advanced south towards Sydney but I cloaked her and turned back up to try to pass undetected past New Zealand and Norfolk Island and hopefully surprise shipping in the Fiji-Samoa area.

Of all things to happen, KB sails directly over a heavily damaged US submarine, SS Spearfish, which had been heavily damaged by ASW in the Truk or Rabaul area, if I recall right. The game is up. KB has uncloaked and will now rush north to Fiji, hopefully I can still surprise some convoys.
