Status: offline 		Just out of interest, can you (or anyone really) recommend some really good books for teaching military strategy and tactics, possibly suitable for a relative newcomer to wargames? Sorry if this is a little off-topic.

And do a search on Amazon for James F. Dunnigan. He is pretty well respected in the wargaming community, and has written many books on both war and wargaming. He's an old-school hex & counter man from the days when you had cardboard units on a foldout, cardboard map. His book are also available on Amazon.com.

In the USA, on Amazon, you can find MANY used books for ($5.00) shipped from the Amazon book vendors. The books often for for one cent, and the shipping per item is 4.99, far less than than what it costs to ship it.

So long as you stick to sellers with sales of at least a few hundred and reputations of 96% and up, most books listed in "good" condition aren't bad, and are quite useable. Usually they are as good or better than slightly shopworn books that go for full price at local bookstores.


As for using Google/Yahoo, even looking for a compare and contrast of strategy vs. tactics, there isn't much good stuff out there because what is out there is often contradictory, and tends to equate the two.

Status: offline 		I've read Dunnigan's Wargames Handbook, which was a pretty good introduction to wargaming history. I hadn't realized he was so prolific, I will have to check his other stuff out.

As you say I wasn't having much luck doing random searches. It's difficult to find good material for aspiring Generals, as opposed to the more mass-market kind of stuff. I think O-Klink has given me enough to probably last a few years so thank you!

All excellent books!

One important thing to keep in mind is the generally static nature of strategy. Most all of the strategic concepts that were true in the era before firearms still apply today.

In addition, many tactics have only changed in the details. As an example, slipping a small, mobile force (horses) through the lines to go ape in the enemy's rear is just as important today as it was centuries ago.

Just the details have changed.

And using terrain to shut down the enemy's strong points? Or using a valley to constrict infantry for an ambush? Examples of these exist from 2500 years ago. Yep, Two thousand, five hundred. And flanking? Prehistoric, no doubt. Organized pack animals such as wolves do this fer cryin' out loud!


From what I understand (and I'm a rank amateur) many fundamental concepts of strategy have changed little compared to the changes in tactics. But if you are going to play a Civil War game, you need to understand how tactics applied in the day, or else...
