Status: offline 		I just finished the book Left for Dead, that covers the story about a young boy working to exonerate the record of Captain McVay, late of the USS Indianapolis.

I really enjoyed the book which tells stories about the loss of the Indianapolis and survival stories from the men that survived their challenges of sharks and exposure before finally being rescued.

To read the preface and some of the stories left me with chills. And to ponder the way the US Navy handled the proceeding involving Capt. McVay left me feeling a little bit dirty.

Status: offline 		I´m in the middle of moving so I cant find the book but I remember reading a book "sanctioned" by some of the surviviors from the Indy. They all give Vay their fullest support. Even the sub captain who sank her was called to witness during the hearing testifed in Vays defence. I think the base for the charge was that Vay hadn´t ordered a zig zag during the night. According to doctrine at the time zig zag wasn´t to be done during the night if the moonlight was poor. But he was sentenced for dereliction (sp?) of duty none the less. Eventhough the sub captain gave witness that it hadn´t made the slightest difference. Vay eventually shot himself later on.

The surviving sailors all gave him the fullest support but some relatives of the onces who perished sent Vay letters at christmas each year blaming him for the sinkings and the death of their relatives. Really shameful behavior. The Navy didn´t behave any better. Really shamefull the whole story. But I think he was cleared of all charges pretty recently and given an honourable discharge instead of a dishounorable? Ofcourse that was long after his death.

Tragic story indeed. Personally feel for Vay and the utter anguish he must have felt that eventually caused him to commit sucide. I think the ones sending him thoose letter have some reckoning to do... Their behavior is nothing but shameful.

Status: offline 		It starts with a government though.. Some people are pretty narrow minded especially if they are really hurt - the loss of a loved one -

It is terribly ironic that they don't even blame the man pulling the trigger (although he was just doing his job, targetting enemy militairy ships....) they blame the poor ships captain happening to be at the wrong place at the wrong time...

In the end, you can only blame the people starting the damn war....

Status: offline 		Funny thing about command, you are responsible for things that happen when in command. Period. The Navy really mishandled the whole thing from start to finish in defense of the skipper, but the accountability associated with command is undeniable.
