I really like the music in the game, I looked around the folders but can't seem to find where the music is installed, has anyone found them?

I would really like to listen to the tracks.

Thank you!

Glad you like the music. I made Gil and Mike sit on my sofa and listen to more than 100 tracks that I had chosen as initial candidates. I will pass word along to them that their tastes are appreciated.

We had originally tried to include the music in a folder with WMV files so that players could listen to the music directly, and could mod the music easily by dragging music files into and out-of this music folder. However, we encountered problems with the Microsoft library for playing these sorts of files: there were long delays on certain computers (5-7 seconds) in which the entire computer locked up as the version of Windows Media Player embedded in Windows parsed these files. We had to switch to a system in which we incorporated all the music into XNA, the short of which means that the music cannot easily be accessed outside of the game now, nor modified easily. I very much regretted having to do this, but the delays on these machines with the other system was a real problem (documented on several programming blogs) that we just couldn't figure out how to solve any other way.

The music is great, i now turn the sound effects right down while i play, so much so that i was playing another East front war game earlier and i was whistling one of the tracks from this game as my tanks went into battle. Wont hold it against you that you can not access the music outside of the game too much on the understanding that you add in a few more tracks in a future update

Thanks Eric, the music adds a lot of flavor to the game . I am enjoying the patriotic Soviet songs very much! For Gemany I would have liked to see some of the German military marches like "Ich Hatt Einen Kameraden", "Erika" and of course "Panzerlied" :)

I havent played any of the scenarios past the Tutorials yet, so maybe I havent heard all of the music yet!

Thanks again for going through all those tracks :)

It was a cool experience for me hearing Soviet patriotic music for the first time. And good classical always adds to any title. Yah lets hear some German military stuff like the man says above. I think that would be neat.

We had a few German military music candidates, but we were unsure whether the pieces in question had unfortunate German political connotations and we wanted more time to investigate this.

Yes, a related part of the problem is that we would very much like the game to remain a legal purchase in Germany :)

All the political correctness in society gets to me sometimes. In this instance it's over a music that some people may find politically incorrect.

There are several pieces of music that could have been used, one is The March for Military Band No. 1 in F major, by Beethoven around 1808. Here is the youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcGpEzGpbMM

Another is Alte Kameraden written in 1889? Link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-A2TNzh9P6k

Another is "Ich hat einen kameraden", again from the early part of the 1800's. The youtube link (it's flagged offensive for some reason) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVpM8OPixds&skipcontrinter=1

So we can't have music written before Nazi Germany but we can perfectly modeled pioneer units and pzIV D's haha . Sorry for my sarcasm, just having a little fun ;)

Well, me being german I'd like to chip in on this:

If you want your WW2 game to be legally sellable in germany there are a few things you need to remain aware of, so I think it was a wise move to FIRST check wether the music was legal in germany or not.
For instance, the german national anthem is used in the game as an instrumental version. If it was with vocals and was using the wrong part of the song (The one going on about how germany is greater than anything else in the world and how it should be a lot bigger than it currently is with rather specific landmarks named) the game would be outright banned in germany on behalf of glorfying the Nazi-Regime, etc.

We are pretty big on the illegality of using all too blatant glorification of anything Nazi-Connected. And while most of the world is more relaxed about it, I guess it's fair that we have a bit of a special touchiness on the whole topic. Most of those laws were implemented not too long after the war during the whole "denazification" stuff happening over here.

WW2 games ride the edge of legality in germany anyway. No need to make that even worse by unwise selections of music ;-)

If a German resident decides to add Nazi music into the game is that allowed? Surely there are free enough to choose what they listen to in their own homes. And it's common practice to mod a game to include a Nazi flag when they never ship with one. Given that could the members download section be legally used to share an unofficial game patch that adds in Nazi music?

I am not a lawyer in these matters, but for most of that stuff possession isn't actually illegal, it's the selling or handing to others that makes it illegal.

Actually it is VERY common for movies and games that come out on the german market to have a "german edition" where all Nazi insignia have been removed. Dito for violence.
Hence we are really happy about the whole european union idea so that we can easily order games directly in the UK or Austria who don't have similar laws.
And yes, we are fully aware of how little sense all that makes ;-)

And figuring out as to what third parties like members do and if and how you as a company or provider have to stop that happening is something that is keeping a lot of lawyers very happily employed in germany.
