this is how Boise's experience looks like after the succesful engagement of the two DMS at Kota Bharu... she's now semi useful for night engagements but far from the veteran status of IJN cruisers with their experience in the high 60s or low 70s...

another failed attempt to hit a freighter... guess we'll see slightly more misses in this campaign as we're using a reworked db of Babeslite with bombs, aerial torpedos and torpedos having their accuracy rating reduced... not sure how that's going to play out in regards of sub attacks on freighters as from my gut feeling subs have been missing freighters too often already anyway... I have tried to find statistics on this on the web and failed miserable while spending quite some time for my search...

Day Time Surface Combat, near Shortlands at 109,131, Range 21,000 Yards

our patrols from Port Moresby spotted an enemy TF sitting at Shortlands yesterday, being identified as CACADDDDDD... now I didn't give much about the identification as I though encountering some freighters covered by some PB or DD at best would be all to find there... I had this cruiser squadron being on station in the area to intervene with any fast grab of the Solomons and was quite confident when I've ordered the squadron to move in to arrive during daylight... the cruisers were deliberately arriving at daylight as I was sure to do more damage then than during a night engagement... what can I say, the fact that the cruisers arrived during the day probably saved them from a real disaster as my patrols were spot on in identifying the enemy TF and no less than four heavy cruisers together with four destroyers were encountered at Shortlands... a formidable force but my inferiour TF did very well with CA Canberra scoring several 8inch hits on the enemy cruisers early on although none of the shells were able to penetrate the enemy cruisers' armored decks...

when the range began to drop I feared having my cruisers being wiped from the scene as more and more heavy shells started to detonate in the superstructure of my ships or were going through their armor... those IJN hits that were scored from long range even bounced off my light cruisers... the longer the encounter lasted, the more confident I felt as my cruisers seemed to perform quite well, scoring more hits on the enemy than in return... looking at penetrating hits, the IJN did better though, leaving my ships in various states of damage while none is anyway near danger of sinking and nothing that couldn't be fixed in Australia's ship yards within a couple of weeks...

while encountering those heavy cruisers at Shortlands was more a surprise to me than to Cuttlefish, this is only part one of the surprise I mentioned before...

It has been my experience that even if I do not get the casulties, like drop 100 bombs kill 6 vs clear terrian where as the Allies drop 100 bombs and kill 50 - 100... there seems to be morale effects that make ground bombing have its own unique value overall. I hit a rough jungle hex for a week and that was enough to hurt supply and morale forcing in this case the IJ Imperial Guards out of the hex.

So there maybe value to the attacks that might not be readily apparent ...if your units ar enot suffering morale/supply losses . then maybe your right .. he just likes ground atttacks ..

I have watched ground attacks in my earlier games already and could not see any effect against my troops when there weren't also casualties listed in the combat report. That was the point when I stopped doing them on a grand scale. Of course I still see them as very efficient if the enemy is in clear terrain without forts or if really a lot bombers can target only one or two units being in a hex but else I don't see a reason to fly them at all. And especially not when the enemy in the meantime is building up forts rapidly so flying air attacks to damage the bases would make more sense to me. But I won't complain as it's quite an advantage at the moment being able to build forts instead of repairing the damage from enemy air attacks.

had to split the turn into more parts as I couldn't post all the screenshots from a very intense day...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

here's the surprise for Cuttlefish I mentioned before...

Morning Air attack on TF, near Shortlands at 109,131

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 16 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Allied aircraft
F2A-3 Buffalo x 11
F4F-3A Wildcat x 11
F4F-3 Wildcat x 9
SBD-2 Dauntless x 51
SBD-3 Dauntless x 17
TBD-1 Devastator x 27

Allied aircraft losses
SBD-2 Dauntless: 1 damaged
SBD-3 Dauntless: 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
CA Kako, Bomb hits 6, heavy fires, heavy damage

CA Aoba, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Japanese ground losses:
282 casualties reported
Squads: 13 destroyed, 13 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 4 (2 destroyed, 2 disabled)

I had Lexington and Enterprise moving towards Wake on turn one to pick up the VMF and further heading SW towards the Solomons... after the enemy TF was spotted yesterday we had to set the CV TF to full speed to reach the area to strike this turn... I guess the appearance of my carriers wasn't really amusing for Cuttlefish and when I saw my (mostly light) cruisers run into the enemy CA at Shortlands I thought that if I will lose my cruisers I can take revenge if my carriers would launch a strike... now my cruisers all survived with only light damage and now my carrier based bombers probably take out two heavy cruisers while damaging two more and sinking the small freighter carrying the IJN unit tasked to seize Shortlands...

I think it's not too uncommon to send the American carriers South right at the beginning but most often the IJ player isn't really counting on them to show up in the Solomons and/or going further into the DEI...

Japanese Ships
CA Kinugasa, on fire
DD Uzuki

DD Oboro
DD Yuzuki
CA Furutaka, Bomb hits 5, heavy fires, heavy damage

I'm not often that lucky to launch a carrier strike against the same enemy TF both in the morning and afternoon but if I am I usually end up having really bad weather in at least one of the phases... the effect if weather is clearly visible if you compare the morning and afternoon strike and the fact that at least halve of my bombers went after the agile destroyers meant we could only finish Furutaka (for sure as she now took 6 penetrating 1000lb and 2 500lb bombs)... Kinugasa has brought the heavy fires of the morning phase under control and isn't even showing up with heavy fires anymore, Kako may have been sunk at this stage already and Aoba should still be in more or less good shape but she still took 2 1000lb bombs already (mind you the reduced bomb effect in Babes, can't say that often enough as it really is a difference if a CA is hit by a penetrating stock 1000lb bomb or a Babes 1000lb bomb)...

needless to say I am not unhappy with this turn as my cruiser squadron survived the unexpected daylight encounter with 4 enemy CA and then those CA were hit hard by my carriers... I was thinking about the position of KB for a couple of minutes looking at the map during the orders phase and decided we will keep the carriers in the area for one more turn trying to finish the CA that are still afloat surely trying to get back to Truk... if I completely miscalculate KB's position then Cuttlefish may take revenge tomorrow by sinking my carriers if KB can reach the area doing a full speed move (18 hexes)...

What I really didn't understand about Cuttlefish's move is that he moved those heavy cruisers to Shortlands yesterday while his "invasion convoy" (guess it only consisted of a lonely xAKL) came in only today... if they would have moved together I wouldn't have been able to set up what I did today as the appearance of the CA at Shortlands alerted me of something going on there and the cruisers were still in position today... even if you may not expect US carriers popping up in the area, there would still be several cruisers (light and heavy Commonwealth and heavy US cruisers) around that could go in during daylight and that would be something greatly different from a night encounter when you shouldn't oppose IJN CA...

here's my cruisers squadron that tangled with the enemy, as you can see, only Canberra took flt damage from a penetrating belt hit but she should be fine and the same goes for my CL...

going with today's air losses only one CA is sunk so far but I am sure at least one more is in sinking condition, one severly and one moderately damaged... the loss of 7 carrier based bombers really hurts at this stage of the war but who wouldn't be willing to lose halve a dozen bombers for such a result on day 9 of the war?

CA Canberra and DD Triumphant were the two ships of my cruiser squadron that gained the most experience... being in the mid 60s is already quite a nice experience...

And of course CA's are the one ship type the IJN never gets more of. Nice work.

Nice ambush Castor! It is good to see the Allies using their CVs early in the game. Early on I think they actually have a lot of opportunities to cause problems for the Empire as long as they have a reasonable idea where KB is lurking.

Regarding ground attacks, I use them to try to flip a unit which is moving back into combat mode so they can't get to where they are going at the quickest rate. Catching a moving unit in strategic mode is even better. If there are many units, it is a complete waste of time. If they are not moving it is better to bomb to prevent forts from building.

As someone who plays the Japanese, I think Japanese players get jaded by what the Allies can do to units when they ground attack. As you are well aware, a couple of units wandering around in the open in someplace like Oz will be completely destroyed in a few game turns by Allied bombers. I think Japanese players tend to think they can do the same thing.

As the IJN player, I would never risk my precious CAs (even the crappy ones you have killed in this instance) that far out without knowing where the Allied CVs are.

thanks guys

Didn't know there are crappy IJN CA! Know that there are crappy IJN CL but to be honest, I would trade any US CA for any IJN CA anytime. Pretty goes for both sides, you can operate freely as long as you know the whereabout of the enemy's carriers but it's a risk if you don't know.

Yes, using ground attacks to have enemy units switching from move mode into combat to slow them down or am massing bombers to attack enemy units in open terrain but as soon as the enemy is sitting with a couple of units in a non clear terrain hex ground attacks are pretty much useless. With bomb effects halved in Babes you also won't see devastating attacks of 4Es less often I guess.

and then this happened...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on TF, near Tarawa at 136,128

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid spotted at 19 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 72
B5N2 Kate x 26
D3A1 Val x 22

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N2 Kate: 1 damaged
D3A1 Val: 1 damaged

Allied Ships
CA Louisville, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
CA Pensacola

damn it... same as what happened to Cuttlefish's cruisers in the Solomons now happens to mine near Tarawa as KB pops up and runs into my earlier unspotted cruisers... while I spotted his cruisers and sent in my carriers at full speed, KB probably is just supporting the invasions around Tarawa or is rather on the move further South as the carriers are spotted South of my cruisers already when they launch their bombers... most of the bombers focussed on Louisville and in the end I'm rather lucky to see only 4 bombs hitting Louisville but we're only in the morning phase... bad suprise for me here...

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x D3A1 Val bombing from 9000 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 250 kg SAP Bomb
13 x B5N2 Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Type 91 Torpedo
13 x D3A1 Val bombing from 9000 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 250 kg SAP Bomb
13 x B5N2 Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Japanese aircraft

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
xAK Fatshan, Bomb hits 6, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Nanning, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage

while enemy CVL or CVE are attacking my remaining shipping in the SRA... 11 bombers 10 hits, not bad...

Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
CA Kinugasa, Bomb hits 6, and is sunk
CA Aoba, Bomb hits 9, heavy fires, heavy damage

I thought I would be the only one to enjoy this turn as I was pretty sure I would be able to catch the fleeing IJN CA which actually happened... the destroyers were dispatched and fled full speed towards Truk (I guess) as they weren't spotted anymore... the two remaining cruisers were hit hard and both are done, makes it four IJN CA sunk in two days...

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x SBD-3 Dauntless releasing from 3000'

Allied aircraft losses
SOC-1 Seagull: 1 destroyed

Allied Ships
CA Pensacola
CA Louisville, Bomb hits 2, and is sunk

and now something really strange, not sure what went wrong here... both Cuttlefish and me thought that would be really strange as KB seemed to launch a full strike against the two cruisers but during the replay it seemed that nearly none actually attacked... never seen such a strange replay before, only Louisville takes two more bombs that sink her but Pensacola is completely left alone... none of the 150+ Kates attacking with torps today scored a hit... none... nearly 150 Vals only scored 6 hits in total while in both phases weather was fine... have sent the turn to JWE for further investigation but haven't heard something so far...

KB wasn't in close support of Tarawa's invasion and if my cruisers would have reacted against the invasion convoy off Makin KB would have been too far South and wouldn't have stumbled right into my cruisers... bad luck on one side but luck on the other that one cruiser survived...

Didn't know there are crappy IJN CA! Know that there are crappy IJN CL but to be honest, I would trade any US CA for any IJN CA anytime.

I can understand that point for surface combat, since IJN CA's carry Long lances and USN CA's carry no tubes at all. But for bombardment or CV escort, the Astoria and Baltimore classes are head and shoulders superior to the six-gunned CA's you've been giving a hard time to.

yeah, heavy cruisers for surface combat was what I was thinking about. This is where I fear them the most and what would be my primary role for the IJN cruisers. As carrier escorts they won't make that much difference IMO and for bombardments pretty much everything works well, even those old 7.5 inch armed British cruisers. As AA platforms the mid/late war USN cruisers are great of course and those certainly make a difference if you have five or six in a CV TF.

not really spectacular turns at the moment but as the Allied I sure won't complain about boring turns at this stage of the war...

KB was spotted again this turn and is now moving back towards Rabaul it seems and somehow I think the enemy's most potent weapon is moving around without much of a plan as KB appears somewhere, gets spotted and retires again so while showing up several times already KB didn't go deeper into my lines and none of my convoys was ever in danger of being attacked (except the two CA that KB ran right into without being spotted prior)...

Don't know about da babes but constant ground attacks even in bad terrain do sap morale and cause disruption. Keep the detection high and use massed ground attack by air the same turn you launch your land attack. Almost always results in a disruption modifier on the enemy when you resolve the land combat.

For the Allies this is a luxury early in the game and the risk of a CAP trap makes it too risky as there are no bombers to lose in 42. But in late 44 I am ground attacking quite a lot. I got the planes and plenty of supply so why not? Plus all second generation allied fighters carry big bomb loads. Plus ground attacks on isolated Japanese units in my rear keep them out of supply and allow newly trained units to gain experience on milk runs. It is so nice to be the Allies in late 44....

But, of course, to allow the enemy to build fortification when you can stop it with base bombing is a serious oversight.

yeah, ground attacks do cause disruption but as in my case for example, the enemy sends dozens of medium bombers to attack trashed, small units and while not causing casualties, he doesn't cause disruption either as long as my units aren't in clear terrain. Main effect and the only one I notice is my units switching from movement into combat every time they are attacked. To me, those ground attacks do not make any sense at all, but like I've said, who am I to complain about my enemy ordering those strikes.

damn, that supply convoy is completely annihilated as there was no air cover at all at Rangoon and so far my convoys weren't attacked while being spotted... means I will have to use the AVG in future when convoys are coming in... I deliberately kept my fighters out of Rangoon as long as the enemy didn't attack shipping because Rangoon was reconned daily and if he would have spotted my fighters there it wouldn't have taken long until he would send lots of Zeroes and Oscars on sweeps to wear down the AVG...

the convoy that was obliberated yesterday wasn't the only one unloading at Rangoon and today we have sent in the full AVG plus a RAF Buffalo squadron and this time not torp carrying Betties but bomb loaded Nells show up with a strong Oscar escorted... seeing my Cap numbers I've thought the escorting Oscars as well as the Nells would take a real beating but the Oscars performed horrible well and not only pretty much kept our fighters away from the bombers but also shot down more than halve a dozen fighters while only losing the same number... got no clue why the Nells were carrying bombers and in heavy rain they were hitting nothing from 9000ft... the result of my fighters wasn't really encouraging and I doubt it will keep the enemy from further attacking my shipping here...

if Cuttlefish (or any other IJ player) is thinking about doing anything in China, he should pay 100% attention not to allow any supply convoys to unload at Rangoon as it is easily possible to see a hundred thousand supplies move from Burma into China while you don't have to do anything other than bringing lots of supply to Burma, it will flow back to India automatically (if you drain too much supply there but where else should you bring supply to Burma early on) but also at a huge percentage into China...

IIRC China starts with something like 60,000 supplies into the war and my goal always is to bring it up to at least 200,000 and I have managed to do so in every game so far...

Allied Ships

we have spotted this enemy TF in that hex for days now and I wondered what it was doing there as it wasn't moving or patrolling other hexes at all and at some point I just decided to send in Boise and Co to investigate, thought we would meet one or two CL plus destroyers but in the end there were only destroyers... paid attention to moonlight as I wouldn't want my SAG going in at 1000 yards against torpedo carrying enemy ships and as it was tonight it was just fine with the engagement starting at 11,000 yards...

heavily outgunning the enemy the result with no hits at all was pretty pathetic though and my SAG didn't attempt to pursue the enemy...

after my SAG unsuccesfully engaged the enemy destroyers my ships retired towards Soerabaja running over I-164 which succesfully attacks Marblehead and my light cruiser suffers crippling damage... that operation truly was a disappointing failure... Marlbehead will try to make Balikpapan but even if she gets there, I have no hope she will ever make it out of there again...
