subs: S-35 tries for the CL Sendai TF near Tanna, missing DD Fubuki with 2 fish.

Triton announces its arrival with a hit on Yamaoka Maru near Daito Shoto. Looks like the Jakes here didn't really thwart this attack at least. Later in the day Triton surfaces again and hits a second time. So 2 exploding torps out of 4. That makes up for a lot of misses lately. At least the ship was empty on it's way back to Borneo.

Seal also attacks a TK TF in the shallow water near Hong Kong. I have good ASW here as well. I'll be scraping up some surface forces to patrol this route.

So Pac: Heavies hit Noumea. This time they go for the troops. Only a few squads disabled. No sign of stragglers from the combat two days ago, so all hunter TFs will move back to Noumea to refuel.

Burma: Nothing happening.

Angelina Lucky?

I opened the forum today to see angelina has posted in my thread. That was a welcome surprise. A lady? Interested in my babble and incessant posting of pictures of 70-80 year old ships? Alas, it was not to be. I opened the page to find only my latest post, (with its recently discovered and proudly displayed image of IJN standard tanker designs), but nothing else. Too sad.

Thank you to LarryFulkerson for posting on the main page to have the spam posts removed.

The year in game is passing quickly. The period of Japanese control is gently slipping away, and now I have to scurry to provide defenses to areas in the second tier of the Solomons, the Cent Pac area, Sumatra and the Andamans, as well as figure out what MLR I should use in Burma. Daunting tasks, but all part of the fun of playing Japan. I actually look forward to defense, but I'm also very aware I have little experience of it in this game. I hope I can figure parts of it out before there is a major shift in game balance.

subs: I also have to get some better coordination of ASW air and sea forces near the HI, where many new subs are popping up each turn.

Today Grayling goes for a tanker near Saisho To and is forced to dive by escorts before getting a shot off.

Near Samah, where the IJAAF 2E ASW group is upgrading planes to Sallys, the Swordfish attacks TK To a Maru in the shallows. not so good for the sub, as the extensive array of escorts pound her with 2 penetrating hits and 2 more damaging misses. This sub has a long way to go toward home.

MLs attack I-166 inconclusively near Karachi.

S-34 goes for a DD escorting CA Suzuya back to safety and repair. The sub misses.

So Pac: The KB makes it down to Tulagi. No issues or sightings by subs thus far. The Judy recno planes are just beginning production (10 a month) and I am desperate to have them now to assess the strength of Nadi/Suva and see if it's possible to hit the 4E base there. With at least 80-90 planes, it would be great to knock some out and maybe hit the port to see if Phoenix and other damaged ships came back there. I don't want to stroll into a buzz-saw of 120 fighters though, so it would be great to have a quick look before committing.

Burma: Nothing.

On the D4Y C series recon planes: have you noticed how few units can actually fly them? I have just ONE unit and another due to arrive in Spring 1943. The rest of the groups arrive from late 1943 onwards. And that one unit already active happens to be the Yokosuka Ku T-1 that flies the flying boats. The 1 or 2 groups you have that can fly the D4Y1-C are sizes 9 and 18 - are you sure that you want to produce 10 a month?

The J1N1-C Gecko is probably the better recon plane for the Navy, unless you want to have those handful on one of your carriers. The C5M2 groups you already have can fly it, and the same groups that can fly the D4Y1-C can also use it. It has better range, flies a little higher and uses the Ha-35 engine which you probably have and produce in hundreds but which you need less as new, better types of fighters become available, so production wise its better use of resources as you dont need to convert, expand and repair factories as much.

Of course you have probably already built the factory...

Ha! Another one of those moments playing Japan where you just sit and think, 'Ahhhh, crap! lets make a note of that and figure out what to do next.'

Thanks Erkki. I never considered that the C5M2 groups wouldn't upgrade to the D4Y1-C. I just thought, Navy, recon, better range, build it.

I'll take a look through tracker and find out what to do next when I get to my game computer tomorrow again. If indeed I find no useful groups now to fly them (I can't take away a Mavis/Betty group for that task), I'll build 20-30 for the future, then check to see if the Irving recon plane that comes next month works in the groups I have now, and if not, I'll check the J1N1-C Gecko and see if that makes more sense. I didn't really look into the upgrade paths as I thought, well, there are only 3 starting groups of recon for the IJN, they must fly that plane. Live and learn.

It looks like for my intended task I may have to send Emilys in and hope they can pick up decent recon results.

Thanks. One less to learn!

I do have to say as a historian of Japanese planes and other fighting devices I am a bit of a novice. Part of what I like in playing this side is learning about all of the varieties. I just found a site that goes into some detail even about models that were planned but not built. Many of the stats seem nearly identical to the ones in game, which is different than some other sites I've seen.

I'm not sure if it's different in the scenario you're playing, Erkki, but I just double-checked and found that I hadn't been as careless as I'd thought. All three of the IJNAF recon groups do fly the D4Y1-C as well as the J1N1-C Gecko "Irving" later. So I may get some working in a week or two, which is great.

Good!

I just checked out all the possible upgrades to my C5M2 and patrol units in the game, and not just in the Tracker. Unfortunately it seems that the DBB differs from stock game here, as only the Yokosuka Ku T-1 has the D4Y recon versions on their upgrade list.

Its the same thing with the C6N. I dont think either series are worth the R&D or production much in the da babes...

subs: I-2 is attacked by AMs near Port Kembla. No hits.

So Pac: A strong SCTF came into Noumea today unexpectedly. It must have shot up at flank speed from NZ. I had sent a sub after a reported CL there yesterday.

The Mauritius and CL St Louis caused havoc among the surprised IJN forces. On the day 4 DD were lost and CL Kuma went down. The Allies lost only 1 DD confirmed.

Strangely, in the second engagement, after retreating out of the Noumea hex, the IJN crosses the T but still does poorly against the Allied ships. Looks like we'll have to step up the level here and get some strong CA TFs into the area to keep control.

Also, the KB is in position to hit some of the retreating slightly damaged Allied forces which appear to all have been heading toward Suva. It will move down from Tulagi and we'll begin to think about testing the defenses of Fiji for a strike there. There are sigint reports every day from Suva, so there is a potential for a good raid there.

Soryu is arriving post-upgrade near Rabaul and will join the KB after refueling.

Burma: With the added troops n the area supply is becoming a factor. I'll be sending some large shipments form the HI soon. Right now a lot of garrison units arrived so I need the supply to go with them. Some are coming to the Andamans.

Palembang has been providing top ups on supply until the main shipments can arrive.

subs: O-19 is still near Balikpapan. An ASW PB found her today, but no attacks.

Skipjack was located near Truk. No attacks.

So Pac: The KB moves out. I put all of the faster CVs in one TF and the slower ones in another. This will be a good test of coordination for such a large TF if we find targets. Tomorrow it should be near Luganville. No rise in detection levels yet.

A 4 BB 6 DD TF will follow as well as another with 3 CA and 5 DD.

Burma: Nothing today.

subs: PC Kaki hits S-28 near Belep Islands with one damaging shot.

Halibut is forced to submerge by DDs near Hamamatsu.

So Pac: The KB is still not showing detection level rises. It is near Luganville now.

Luganville is bombed by 4E and 1 Jake is lost. Nothing else of consequence.

Burma: Nothing.

So Pac: The KB continues to sneak South. The SCTF shows a detection increase, one hex away from the KB, but the KB seems as yet undetected.

Burma: Now that more groups ar updated to Helens, some raids will commence. The first most likely against Chittagong, which shows 34 fighters now.

A bit of excitement and a little disappointment today. Some good some bad.

subs: Grayling sighted near the HI. Still getting a lot of new subs into convoy zones. No hits on a supply TF heading out.

O-16 is hanging out near Cam Rahn Bay, which is right on the TK convoy path. Lots of ASW there, but I might move things for a few days to throw him off the track. The sub misses DD Yumikaze with a spread of two.

Amberjack hits an amphib TF near Sorong, taking an engineer unit to one of the islands off of Sumatra. The xAK Taito Maru takes one fish and will try to limp two hexes to Sorong. The rest will high tail it out of there.

So Pac: Now for the exciting part. The KB hits Fiji. There is a lot of CAP at Fiji, mostly P-39s. Now this might seem like a good thing, but it hasn't proven so yet. Today 100 zeros set to sweep didn't fly in the morning phase, and so the strike package went in short of protection and got hit hard.

Many bombers were lost, but many made it through and hit the almost 200 ships in the area!! There were 7 separate TFs in the port plus over a 100 ships disbanded. Our strike mostly took out the fuel laden TKs and hit some CLs. It could have been so much better. We'll have to retire and lick wounds tomorrow, but I'll leave the sweep on to see what that will do.

Several late strikes went in with no escort and got skewered. Those are the breaks. Over 80 planes down on the day, but Only 43 pilots listed as KIA, MIA or WIA. Subs in the area must have helped a lot.

subs: Swordfish continues to plague the area around Samah. An amphib TF was attacked here but 2 torps shot at DMS W-16 both missed.

AM Horsham attacks RO-67 near Newcastle but no hits.

So Pac: Sweeps went today but were only mildly successful. Not sure why 20k sweeps aren't doing better against P-39s. Some were set to LR CAP, some to sweep.

Looks like only the Wildcats were set to higher than 20k, at 31k. The P-39s seemed to be the ones doing the damage though in the replay.

Any ideas?

Burma: I also tried a Tojo sweep of Chittagong today that turned out poorly. Or at least only achieved parity. Losses were even here after ops were accounted for.

What I don't understand is that even though the CAP came up slowly, and numbers were always in our favor, we couldn't take advantage and get kills. The pilots are good, the planes are good. They did get a good radar warning, but the numbers were never in favor of the defense.

subs: Kingfish is sighted by a PB near Tandjoengbalai. No attacks.

A big sub hitting mine sound was heard this turn, and it looks like some subs decided to sneak into Singapore harbor. Or they were trying to move through the area and the mine-field was not yet known. Either way, looks like we got one.

subs: I-122 is located by the AM Eland Dubois near Albany. Then it pops up and nails the AM with one torp later in the day.

Trusty is sighted by DD Yomogi near Tavoy. The last ASW Lilys are being changed out for Sallys over here.

So Pac: Buka was invaded. Somehow this remained an Allied base until now. There are just a few dot bases in the Solomons that are still Allied owned. Mostly South of Tulagi. I'll try to take these so nothing happens too easily here.

Burma: The first airfield attack by the IJAAF in months hit Chittagong today. The field was empty, but decent damage was put on the field. It's just good to know I can get things to fly in a coordinated way in Burma. I'm launching from Toungou which has an Air HQ. Tmomorrow I'll transfer all of the Helens to Moulmein out of the way of a retaliatory strike.

Unfortunately, I think it comes down to the fact the Japanese aircraft just lack the punch to finish off most enemy armoured fighters at this stage of the war. The Tojo's gun value of 10 is obviously better than the Oscar's 6 (if not by much ), but unless you get on an enemy aircrafts 6 o'clock, most passes simply cause damage from anything other than an elite Japanese pilot.

I try and make sure my best aircraft are flown by my best pilots. So far not much joy, but not from lack of trying.

I had a LR CAP on the base, but maybe I just need more. Two big groups plus a few sweeping. I'll try that next.

subs: Near Suva 3 DDs hit RO-63 with 4 DCs causing minor damage.

So Pac: I sent 40 Kates to try a City attack on Auckland, but to no avail. Not one hit.

It's time for the last trick now before withdrawing North to replenish. In a few days I'll try a bombardment run on Suva with a TF led by Yamato and 3 other BBs. I know mines will be there, but if I set them far enough out I've had good luck with them not hitting any previously, (not this game). Hopefully there will be some ships in the hex to hit as well.

This first raid was most likely meant to come after the sweep. All of our fighters took part, and even though the Nicks were nearly at the incoming altitude, they couldn't get to the bombers, where the Tojos from much higher did get in there.

I'm rethinking Nick usage. I will from now on put them in rear bases at 10k CAP where they are not likely to see any fighter sweeps or escorts. In Burma they will move to Moulmein, where I've been stashing bombers after a strike form Toungou. Still in range for Lightnings, but he seems careful with his raids, and likes a lot of support.

This is interesting. Obviously those Marauders didn't shoot down so many fighters. The LR CAP is not listed. The Hurris were there as well. Still should have been much better. This is the round I'm not happy with at all. That should be a lot of bombers turned back and quite a few killed off.

No 4Es shot down on the day, but 9 Marauders look to have been knocked down. A few Lightnings and Hurris bit the dust also, which is so much better over our base.

A quiet day for combat.

subs: Today near Suva I-16 takes 2 minor hits from 3 Subchasers. It's carrying a mini-sub. The idea is to launch after the BB bombardment hoping there are some wounded. Worth a try, I guess.

So Pac: The KB and the SCTFs move north. It'll be a few days before all is in place for the bombardment run.

JPC: A few units are trying to move out of the mountains back to the Chinese territory, but are messing with my supply. I asked Jocke whether they would be moving along soon. He said it might take a while, so if I want to eliminate them, that was okay.

I may send a brigade to just knock them off the road and get on with my forts and field building at Mangtze and Kunming. Oscars are now at Kunming, as are a Dinah group. Helens that are in restricted Chinese groups will operate from up here. No sense paying PPs to move them to Burma when I can get good use out of these fields. It'll give the Allies more to have to close down, and without as much support from LR CAP and sweeps, except the Lightnings. Next month if all goes well this area should be operational.

Burma: Nothing.

A few 120 AV garrison units are moving to the Andamans. Thai units will man the coast from Moulmein to Megui. I own Ramree Island and I think I should start flying stuff in there now that there are enough troops in Burma, just to keep it out of Allied hands. I'll start off with a construction unit, a naval guard, and an AF Coy. See how that goes.

subs: Lots of subs attacking my ships this turn. Working US torps will hurt.

Seal goes for a TK TF near HongKong. It is sighted by escorts before attacking and forced to dive.

Drum takes a shot at our DDs running ASW near the HI. It misses Mochizuki with 2. It surfaces later in the day and is sighted again.

Snapper attacks a PB in a TF of 13 knot AOs near Jolo. It then comes up again and duds on AO Ondo.

Guardfish attacks xAKLs near Taihoku, running resources back to the homeland. No hits.

So Pac: The KB moves North to within 9 hexes of Suva. Orders are given to the bombardment TF, but because of fueling it won't complete its mission tomorrow. A 4 DD TF will move with it hopefully ready to battle any PTs that might be at Suva.

Burma: Nothing.

subs: Tambor 'elects not to launch' at some xAKLs near Kme-jima! Getting a bit picky, aren't we?

So Pac: The BB TF moved a few hexes in front of the KB, a full 6 from Suva. It will be followed in by 4 DDs. The KB will move to the West of Nadi and LR CAP the BBs, but will stay 7 hexes out with planes set to 6 hexes so as to avoid the CAP.

There appear to be several SCTFs in the Suva hex as well as PTs, SCs, and probably some YMS.

An SNLF Coy unit will take Stuart Island South of Tulagi tomorrow. Just turning dots red.

Burma: Nothing.

Home Isands: I almost forgot to mention, a lot of needed goodies arrived today! These will head toward the South Pacific, a few to the DEI and about half to Burma and the Andamans.

A good result today. This was fun to watch. At least I can say I got something out of the HI it cost to build Yamato.

So Pac: The bombardment of Suva went just about perfectly. The only hitch was several forays by ambitious KB group commanders that hit CAP and resulted in over 40 airplanes shot down. A lot of pilots were again saved by the subs all over the place.

The Yamato and company tangled with a SCTF led by CL Raleigh first. They sank all but one ship in this TF! Banzai!

Then the BBs went in and nailed Suva fields. A decent number of planes were taken out and Jocke said he had a lot of work to do this turn, presumably switching out groups to heal. A decent number of troops were hit as well. Surprising considering the fort levels the place must have and that it's a level 9 field.

After this the KB got involved as daylight broke. Scouts found that several SCTFs retreated into range and although some CAP covered certain hexes, many were left vulnerable. A lot of DDs were hit hard and likely sunk. As many as 10-12 may have been sunk on the day, plus some SCs, putting a dent in his escort and anti-sub activities for a short while at least.

SBDs also took off after our wounded DDs but the LR CAP skewered almost 40 of them on the day with one minor hit on DD Isoname leaving 25 system damage and knocking off the forward gun turret.

All in all, a good day for the IJN. Only 1 DD lost and although quite a few pilots went under the water, so did A LOT of Allied ships, planes and pilots. Plus it was fun!

subs: At Suva just after the naval battles, DD Shinonome hits S-31 14 times, with a few direct. It doesn't list heavy damage, but it can't be doing well after this.

Burma: Notihng.

subs: Under a waning moon and a clear sky mini-sub SSX Ha-5, launched yesterday by the large mother sub I-16, eases quietly into Suva harbor. Even during the early morning hours a few smoking and damaged ships are entering port from the surrounding areas, some being towed, others limping in under their own power. Only a few ships seem to be on patrol duty. Among them is the destroyer Fox.

As the Ha-5 comes within sight of the port Fox turns and moves in it's direction. LT Murananka O., with only his periscope above water does not know if he's been sighted but takes no chances and orders the sub down, changing course to the East, then back out to the South. After 30 minutes of maneuvering he resurfaces to find his bearings. He is further out than where he last sighted Fox. He cannot see anything moving now, as the last stragglers appear to have anchored or moored in the inner harbor.

LT Muranaka is then startled by the sudden appearance of a destroyer not 500 meters away off of his port bow. He realizes quickly that it is moving very slowly and then sees the smaller yard craft towing the ship into port. Judging by the seeming list of the ship he deduces that it is badly damaged and returning from the previous day's battles. He has only a few seconds to calculate the distance and speed of his target and the resulting deflection angle while the ship is in front of him at such an ideal attack position and before its crew sights his own small vessel in the phosphorescence of the South Pacific waters.

At 04:37 he fires two of the new Type 98 torpedoes at what turns out to be the destroyer Wilson, (which had been hit the previous day by both a 12.7cm shell from the destroyer Shirayuki and later by an air-launched torpedo). Less than 30 seconds later he is jolted by a severe explosion and sees the ship seemingly leap from the water in two pieces cut just aft of the bridge.

The remains of the Wilson pirouette over and sink quickly as LT Muranaka steers away and orders the boat submerged for the journey back out to the open ocean rendezvous with the I-16 to report the success of his attack to the Empire. Banzai!

Also near Suva I-176 hits DD Allen, (already heavily damaged by 3 250kg bomb hits), with two torpedoes.

Drum hits supply ship xAK Nisso Maru near Nagoya.

So Pac: The KB and SCTFs move North to Tulagi. Several subs are sighted and attacked near the fleet.

Burma: Many divisions are now in Burma. Seven full divisions are here plus the pieces of the 1st and 2nd armored divisions, still awaiting their arty units to be bought out from Manchuria to reform. This means I need to send more supply here. I'm still struggling to find enough supply from the HI to bring all areas of the Empire to comfortable levels.

Updates
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Here are some short updates on ships I've been following during the entire campaign. It's getting more interesting as these ships and units survive, happily, to fulfill the diverse missions to which they are assigned and to take part in multiple distant operations.

DD Shiranui

After spending most of the war with the KB this ship is now escorting an 18 knot AO for quick fuel deliveries to Rabaul and Tulagi. I've resorted to using some of the fast AOs for this as I can't qute get enough fuel to the area to keep things topped up. Mostly due to the overemphasis I'm putting on getting fuel and oil to the HI before the US torps start working. About a TF a day docks at Fukuoka. Some are also now moving from Babeldaob to Tokyo and Osaka.

Nagato Maru
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This ship has been traveling all over the map since the beginning of the campaign. Currently it is in Tulagi being used as an ASW hunter and as an escort to troop ships in the area.

I-25
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The I-25 has been stationed around Hawaii and then in the North Pacific near the West coast during the war. It was DCed and went back to Hakodate to be repaired, and now is back out working the approaches to the Puget Sound.

although it has sunk a ship and has been involved in several encounters, including the one during which it was nearly sunk, the experience level of the crew has not gone up appreciably. (See the next page image of the history of the ship).
