I got an email from Sebastian asking for a game, as he had seen my sig claiming to be an incompetent Allied commander. I decided that I had the time for another game, and we have since decided to start AARs, so guess this will be mine.

House rules
1. Scenario 1.
2. Max 6PT per TF, max 2 PT TFs per hex.
3. No strategic bombing (either side) in China before 1943.
4. No sweeps above 30.000 feet.
5. Only one IJN CV port strike on Dec 7th.
6. PP must be spent to cross borders.
7. Not allowed (either side although it concerns me mostly) to leave a city ungarrisoned to have the resources there damaged.
8. No IJN hunting of USN CVs on turn 1.
9. No non-base invasion.
10. No invasions/blocking actions with fractioned units (aka not using 7 men to deny a hex to a division etc).
11. No Japanese abuse of the loading bonuses etc at the start of the game, so no Japanese landing at Pago Pago on turn 2.

Settings
1. FoW on.
2. Advanced weather off.
3. Allied damage control on.
4. Player defined upgrades on.
5. Historical first turn off.
6. Dec 7th surprise on.
7. Reliable USN torpedoes off.
8. Realistic R&D on.
9. No unit withdrawals off.
10. Reinforcements fixed for both sides.

So, a little info about yours truly;
As my sig tells, I am an incompetent Allied commander, and will get a chance to prove it once more in this game as I play the Allies. My main weakness (atleast as I see it) is that I can get a little overly confident at times (something that has seen the US CV force becoming artificial reefs on several occasions).
I have played/am playing 3 pbem games of Witp:AE, and done horribly. Sebastian has only played the AI.

Feel free to follow/post/comment/laugh at any mistakes made in here

Terje

The game is allready a few turns old, so I will just summarize briefly and post a few screenshots for now before the AAR will be updated per turn.

Update
Pearl
PH was attacked for two consecutive days, but the damage was not too bad, so I consider myself lucky in that regard. However I cursed like a hmm sailor (ok ok, cliche for this game, I get it), when a surface TF of 2 CLs and 6 DDs failed to locate the IJN refueling TF that wandered too close to PH. The IJN got away with a scare, and my ships returned to PH to take a yelling.
The waters around PH is now sub infested, and ASW assets at this time is, as we all know, pityful at best.

PHI
A mail from Sebastian asking wether our HRs ment only 1 port strike on turn 1 or only 1 CV port strike on turn 1, I expected a raid on Manilla as well. It arrived, sunk some subs, damaged some others and did some damage to various other ships. However the AFs in the PHI was left unattended by the Japanese during the first turn, something that has since allowed me to take a toll on the Japanese bombers and Zeroes. I am happy with the tradeoff of some subs with dud torpedoes for my airforce since this allows me to kill highly experienced Japanese pilots from the start.

All major surface ships managed to escape to Soerebaja, but my transports have since been targeted (and mostly sunk) by Japanese surface TFs of one cruiser and 4-5 destroyers. They are now following our transports towards Soerebaja, and I will let Force Z reinforced with Boise and Houston go after one of those IJN TFs.

Baby-KB has not been formed, as we have identified 1 lone CVL (with escorts ofc) moving towards the southern end of Borneo, while two others have been spotted east of Manilla. Force Z will try to get that olone CVL as well.

DEI
Some IJN subs operate in the area, and the Japanese have landed on most of the northern bases on Borneo. The base closest to Singapore (do not recall the name atm) is currently being invaded, and the Dutch CLs and some DDs have been sent out to try to do some damage.

Malaya/Singapore
Most of the ships in Singapore have managed to get to safety. However my usual opening of sending planes from Singapore to Georgetown and then further north into India backfired as Georgetown has been targeted by IJA bombers for days. Still, a few AC from every squadron has arrived in India, making sure the unit is not killed off atleast.

Plans

PH
We will keep repairing ships in Pearl, but as soon as the sub infestation around the islands are delt with, we will send ships to the WC for repairs.

PHI
Clark Field. Nothing more to say really. The lack of torpedoes in the HQs are something I really do not enjoy though, as I usually set the Catalinas there to naval attack to force the Japanese player to escort his TFs.

DEI
Soerebaja is the main naval hub, while we use Batavia as the aerial hub. We are also using some of the Dutch search planes to extract isolated units. If possible we will try to ship some Dutch base forces to Oz.

Oz
Not much to do here for now, they dig in and are training their pilots. We will try to get the forces at Rabaul and PM to safety.

India/Burma/Ceylon
We will not fight in Burma, we will dig in on the border, but due to HRs I cannot simply evacuate now but will have to wait untill the IJA appears.

Training/Convoys etc

Training
We have set up some training squadrons, but we simply do not have enough units to properly start training just yet. Combat naval vessels too will start to cruise around in an attempt to gain some valueable XP for their crews.

Convoys
For now, not many are going out as we lack the ships, but we will try to send forces to Suva, Pago-Pago and Dutch Harbour for now. Supply and Oil are being moved to Oz, Ceylon, Pago-Pago, Suva and Dutch Harbour as well.

Losses
We have lost some ships allready, most have been lost off the PHI, but some were also lost at PH.

The escape from the PHI
Most of our surface combat vessels have made it to safety, most of the transports have not.

The Battle for the Skies

As mentioned, the Japanese did not bomb the AFs on the PHI on turn one, and it has come around to bite them as we are actually scoring 1:1 (roughly) over Clark AF for now. Some of the more experienced pilots have been moved to the pools as I want to save them for now, and deploy them in a unit that will have some chance to succeed in surviving.

Thank you. Yes, I find that pictures are a very good tool in AARs. Hope this one will be entertaining to any that follows it

December 13th 1941

Naval actions
Not a good day for the Allies. The IJN catches up with more ships fleeing from the PHI off Smarinda, and the result is a slaughter where all the Japanese lose is alot of ammo (as they pour it into our transports). Our losses are about 10 AK/AP/TKs.

At Sinkawang our Dutch Cruiser Force (DCF) is ordered to take out the enemy invasion fleet, but the IJN has 3 DDs screening, and they do a very good job. Not only do they keep the DCF away from the transports, but they even score as many hits on the DCF as they recieve in return (1 each ). The DCF has been given new orders for tomorrow.

Submarines
As expected, the IJN submarines have faired better so far, although they have only scored three kills (1 AO, 1 TK and 1 CM). Our own subs have scored a few hits on some AKs, but no kills. I might not have to add this, but all our hits are by the Dutch submarines.
Off PH the IJN subs will hardly be scared by our ASW ships, but atleast our ASW ships are so fast that the IJN subs spend their subs on hitting nothing for the time being.

Land warfare
The IJA keeps hitting targets in China, but I am prepared to lose some territory and some cities here in the beginning. Worst case scenario, we will end up with the Republick of Chungking I suppose. Apart from that, the IJA keep landing forces in the PHI, and they will take it in time, but the more troops they pour in here, the happier I am as this means fewer troops are heading to other more important areas. That being said, I do not claim that the PHI is not important to Japan, but the PHI WILL fall sooner or later, while other areas might be built up to a level where the IJA can be rebuked.

Tokyo Rose
Tokyo Rose makes her first broadcast to our troops as she goes on and on about the defeat of Guam.

Hopes for tomorrow
Hopefully Force Z takes out the CVL and the DCF wrecks havoc with the IJN invasion heading towards palembang

Apologies
I might have added a few too many lines, text etc on the screenshot, hope it is not too crowded.

My opponent has encountered something he (nor I as I've never played Japan) knows how to get to work, any help would be appreciated.

This is his message :
"I try to resize a fighter unit on a CVE. I can select resize from 12 to 27, enough planes are in the pool and the CVE is in a port. But I can't refill the air group. The shown message is not clear to me. :-("

IMHO, the USN can do it as long as:

1) Wildcats have been upgrade to F4F-4 and full 36-plane complements are on board.
2) At least five (5) U.S. CV's are available.
3) All torpedo bombers have been upgraded to TBF Avengers.
4) Two or more Atlanta-class CLAA's are available.

This should be possible by the end of October 1942.

I read in some AAR or other that the player moves the ship-borne planes to a base and THEN resizes and then moves the resized planes back to the CVE ( or CV or etc.).

True, however I need that reminder untill I can gather such a force. I tend to think "hey I have 3 or 4 CVs, that should be on par with the KB"

Central Pacific
The Japanese land at Tarawa, but from the combat replay it seems they did not finish offloading that day. They do off course take the base, but the fact that they are still unloading results in me giving new orders to my CVs.
The KB appears off Wake and assault the airfield there. I am now betting on the KB to remain off Wake and not suddenly turning south. If she does, things will get ugly.

Palembang
First of all I have to offer an apology, it seems my memory is not what it once was. I had apperantly allowed the Houston to join the Dutch Cruiser Force (DCF) and not Force Z. Why do I make a point of this? Well...
For those of you that remembers yesterdays post (or scroll up and watch it), you might remember that I ordered the DCF to Palembang to intercept the IJN landings there. Well, the DCF arrived, but it was too late, the IJN had allready landed so many troops that the base will fall.
To make matters worse, the IJN surface TF going there caught up with my tankers trying to make off with whatever fuel they could before the base fell. The result was a slaughter.

However as mentioned, the DCF DID arrive at the scene, and seing their friendly tankers all sinking, they tore into the enemy transports. The results were not too bad I suppose, but I would have prefered it if they focused their fire on fewer targets making sure they sank them instead of spreading their salvo around the way they did.

Well atleast we sunk some ships, and our submarines should be thankful for the sinking of one of those pesky E-class ships which becomes powerful ASW assets in the future.

By now the IJN screening force had realised that, while they were celebrating their valiant success against defenceless tankers, our surface ships had arrived. Both sides wanted to have words with the other, and the result was a boring draw.

Then the cowards, erm IJN, called in aerial support, ending the engagement for the day. DCF has been ordered home to Batavia for now.

Off Borneo
As mentioned yesterday, we sent the reinforced Force Z out in an attempt to kill an IJN CVL, well, THAT failed. We did however encounter an IJN surface TF and battle broke out. In my oppinion the battle was won by the IJN thanks to two things.
1. Nighttime fighting
2. LL torpedoes
We did have some success however.

Summary
Well, we pulled some hairs out of the Japanese scalp this time, but things could have been better. Then again, they could have been worse.
In the PHI, our fighters are all but gone, so we transfer our Catalinas and Fortresses to Port Moresby before sending them further on to Oz. The P40 squadrons are disbanded to save the last 7 fighters there as well as some average quality pilots.
The IJA has shown that it will take Palembang and Hong Kong tomorrow, and there is not anything we can do about it, but that was expected. Actually I had expected Palembang to be attacked earlier, but in the end the outcome there was given from the start.

We have also spotted a TF some 10 hexes off Rabaul, so I think I will be too late so save the garrison there as well, but some Oz cruisers are not too far away, so we might try to send them in if we can get a better detection level on the enemy TF. I do not want to waste them attacking BBs and the like.

Now what
I have a gut feeling that the enemy will be going south after he secures the DEI. I do not know why, just a feeling. If the enemy goes for Oz, I will not fight to the death for Darwin as it cannot be supplied if the enemy controls the DEI.
Time will show.

Overall
The day started as expected, then got really enjoyable, then there was a moment of "¤%#&!!!!" before some thoughts along the lines of "I knew it, I knew it!".

Japanese Invasions
The IJA capture Palembang and Sinkawang, and they land at Kavieng. At Kavieng however no escorts are spotted, so the Oz Cruiser Force will move ahead and try to inflict damage to the IJN.

Fighting on land
Surprisingly Hong Kong held for the day, and even better the fort still stands. This is due to a vastly reduced IJA combat value modifier.

Singapore
For some strange reason the Japanese keeps sending in Nates over the city. We are grateful as this is one fighter our Buffalos can handle. Although our guys only shoot down 2-3 planes per day, this is good since they lose none themselves.

Naval actions
Where do we start... Well, after yesterdays battles, the Dutch Cruiser Force split up into two units, the damaged ones and the undamaged ones. I was happy sacrificing the damaged ones to allow the undamaged ones to get away. The IJN however did not block the exit from Palembang, but rather chased our TFs down towards Batavia. The result was very one-sided and painful to watch.
Then, the commander of Force Z, espesially picked for his agression, decides to not return to Soerebaja as ordered, but heads further towards the PHI. He then attacks and mauls a Japanese invasion force. Something that was well recieved. Repulse however took ONE hit, and this was enough to give her a TF of her own. The remaining cruisers then found two IJN flattops, and I thought I could get lucky even if the IJN did have a BB in the TF. Instead our cruisers and destroyers decided to abourt the battle, as did the IJN. I guess we all know what the result of that ended up as...

Given orders
Force Z is now broken into 3 parts. Repulse and escort is ordered back to Soerebaja at flank speed, as is the un/lightly damaged cruisers and destroyers. The badly damaged cruisers (Boise being among them, she is not a lucky ship under my command, ever ), are ordered to sacrifice themselves by driving at the enemy flattops, hoping to either engage them, or force them to back off, or to use their flights on these cruisers. We will see how it unfolds.

Summary of the last two days
A clear IJN victory for sure. They have sunk alot, and themselves not lost that much. We did however stop an invasion of the southern coast of Borneo, but that is only delaying the inevitable.

Invasions
Our forces at Kavieng still holds, but the enemy forces there grow every day. We also have intel that an invasion force is enroute to Rabaul.
Tokyo Rose now entertains our stories with the tales of the fall of Wake. her claims as to huge Allied losses however is absurd as most of the free world knows. The good news from Wake, if they can be called such, is that KB once more reveals herself.

Bases lost
Naga, Lingayen and Beaufort are all lost to the Japanese today, this too was expected, and came as no shock. Espesially in the PHI, as all troops have been moved to Clark AF.

Submarine warfare
Our ASW forces at both PH and at Batavia claim to have attacked and damaged enemy submarines, these claims are not believed to be accurate however. As for submarine sinkings, the IJN submarined have made no success today while our brave men have sunk two IJN AKs. Let us hope this is how things will work throught the war.

Naval actions
Things have slowed down, mainly because most of our surviving ships are running away. Some actions were fought off Borneo however, and we did lose some more cruisers, but for those that remember yesterday, this too was expected.

Hong Kong/Singapore
It seems our defence at HK has scared the IJA as they are now only using bombardments against our troops, so the city is still ours. The enemy Nates still struggle with our Buffalos over Singapore, I really thing Oscars and Zeros are needed for the Japanese here. We are very happy with the effort of our fighter pilots even if they do not shoot down too many enemy planes, they do throw off the enemy bomber aims.

Disgrement in Washington
The decision for a "Germany first" policy is not too well recived by our commanders in the Pacific as the first planes are sent from the Pacific theatre to Europe. Those P40s and B17s are badly needed in the Pacific...

Invasions
The IJN appear off Tarakan and try to land some troops. Although they succeed in doing so, our CDs cause some severe damage on a few IJN AKs, and the forces landed were too weak to take the base this turn.

Bases lost
Japan secures Surigao, Kavieng and Puerto Princesa today. Tokyo Rose remains strangely quiet on the subject though.

Information aqquired
The invasion force heading for Rabaul does indeed have support of atleast 1 CA and 2 CLs. The Oz cruisers turn back towards Sydney as they lack heavy cruisers.

Summary of the day
A quiet day in the Pacific as neither side wants to push hard anywhere. We readjust the shipyard usage at Soerebaja, Sydney, PH and Colombo to make the best use of what yards are available. Apart from that nothing really happens, but we take a look at our AC pools. The sight is not a cheery one...

Current events
Troops and supplies are being shipped around the Pacific, but we currently lack both the ships and the PP to make any huge shifts in our forces. For a time things will depend entirely upon the Japanese assault speed. Every day gained is a small strategic victory for us.

General
Nothing really happens this turn. We get the first sub attack off the WC, I am sure more will follow. Anyway the loss of an AKL off San Fransisco is the only naval loss today.

Bases lost
The enemy takes Sidate and Kuching.

Invasions
More troops land at Tarakan and the enemy also invades Kuching.

Considerations
With the rather slow speed the enemy is appearing at in the SoPac, I am considering moving some units from NZ to Noumea in an attempt to hold that base. Doing so would make the supply path to Oz alot easier, but it also means NZ is lightly held.

I might add two more constraints that help in the engagement ..

1) Conduct the operation in an area where PBY patrols are in interlocking zones and the Mavis patrols are at least extended range.
2) Conduct the engagement within LBA range. 4E's are great "fighters" and absorb CAP.
