If I places more than one DD with my heavily damaged CV, the damaged CV will automatically form a TF with a single DD in the next turn. Why can't I use more DDs to escort my CV home?

Your answer is in the last paragraph of Section 9.5 on page 42 of the Manual.

Except in the 2.0 manual section 9 is about land combat. Besides that, this doesn't answer the question of why, it just restates a game rule. I have the same question - why in the world would a competent and coherent admiral assign one DD to escort a CV anywhere - specially when damaged.. It's a holdover from PacWar that I still don't like myself. Personally, I'd put at least two if not three tin cans with a wounded bird farm to improve its odds of not running into a sub driver bucking for admiral.
Your answer is in the last paragraph of Section 9.5 on page 42 of the Manual.
Grrrr!!!!

The 2.10 install moved some files around, and that was from the v1.0 manual.

Look on Page 23 in Section 8.4 of the 2.00 Manual. Your answer lies in the last paragraph of the section on Page 24. It's the same exact wording.

I believe the reasoning I remember was along the lines of "the needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.

I have been, and ever shall be..."

Oops. Sorry, Star Trek II flashback.

Anyway, that was discussed in a thread about 6 months ago (I remember whining about it). The idea is that you've got other capital assets that need protection more than a crippled CV or BB.

that's what the fool book says - however. If I have three CV's, two CA, two CLAA, and eight DD in a TF (I really don't pay much attention to the ten ship penalty - which is a crock anyway) I ought to be able to divert a more appropriate number of DD to escort a dinged up ship wherever I would want. At this point in the war, the CV's ARE my capital assets, and if I can maximize the probablity of protecting that asset by disregarding the game convention, I ought to have that possibility (unless they are time warping a DD968 class as the escort ship)

Would you like some Nimitz to go along with that Spruance?

How about a 688 boat instead?

Hi, place DD in another TF. Order this new TF to follow the CV TF.

Hi Mogami,

Has TF behavior changed? I tried this when UV first came out, however since they were two seperate TF's they did not share ASW and AA assets so all I wound up doing was creating two very slow moving TF's instead of one :). In range enemy LBA & CAG's went after both TF's but concentrated on the TF with the CV as it was the bigger prize. I am not sure about the TF selection process in a sub encounters but my experience has been that they will pick on the crippled CV instead of the escort TF but that just may be the luck of the draw.

Hi, Well the escort (follow) TF might find subs before they get to attack the CV.

Will the DDs take initiation to find enemy SSs? Even if they will, enemy SSs can still attack the damaged CVs.

If CVs are so important, I see no reason why only one DD is allowed to escort each damaged CV.
