I'm curious about how long it will take you guys to identify the ship. I specifically chose the photo with the least identifiable shot. Hint: taken after WW2.

And....go....

It always amazed me how people (on this forum) could guess any single ship!

Although I once had posted one pic and no one knew the answer

LST in one.

I knew you guys would be quick but at least have the decency to let me get home from work first.

"Big Mo", NY May 1952. Heres a better picture.

Well, it looks like regular navy, so its potentially fair game.

Hmmm...I'm going to guess the USS Pixelatedashell? Must have been from the same shipyards as most of the other pictures here, Comrade Red mouse.

Its a serious question, dumbass.

On the site its only labeled (obviously by someone who has no clue about military matters) as "naval reserve training ship". It seems to be a WWI era battleship, but which?

Looks more like a pre-WWI armoured cruiser.

Edit: could possibly be the Washington (later the Seattle). She was converted to a barracks ship and served as such until 1946.

Second Edit: It's more likely to be the USS Prairie State (formerly USS Illinois). The Seattle didn't have a barracks on top of her, but the Prairie State did.

The photo was taken in the 50s though.

Might be, but I don't think those are the correct cars you'd see in 1956. They look much later. What about Oregon?

Yeah, USS Prairie State (IX-15) is my final answer:

She was stricken at the end of 1956.

I concur.

quote:

Excluded from further use as a warship by the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty, Illinois was fitted out as a floating armory at New York Navy Yard in 1924 and was assigned to the New York Naval Militia. She remained there for more than 30 years, though reclassified IX-15 on 8 January 1941 and renamed Prairie State to allow her name to be assigned to a projected new battleship, USS Illinois (BB-65). During World War II, she served as a Naval Reserve Midshipmen Training School at New York. Following the war, she was retained on loan to the State as quarters for a Naval Reserve unit until 31 December 1956.

At least I was right about the battleship bit.

Another view...

Fearsome battle line/nicely arranged targets for aereal marauders.

When did the Atlantic fleet have so many battelwagons? The caption says 1934-1945.

The closer one is definitely a Northampton. The farther one is an Omaha?
