Back to Darwin: B-24 and B-17 prep raids from Alice and Merauke are grounded. Instead we get this limp-wristed effort from the LB-30's.

Afternoon Air attack on 38th/A Division, at 76,124 (Darwin)

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 36 NM, estimated altitude 9,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 13 minutes

Allied aircraft
LB-30 Liberator x 6

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
13 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x LB-30 Liberator bombing from 8000 feet
Ground Attack: 8 x 500 lb GP Bomb
3 x LB-30 Liberator bombing from 8000 feet
Ground Attack: 8 x 500 lb GP Bomb

So, let's review. The BB-force is repulsed. The B-24's and B-17's sit idle. This doesn't look good. Too late to call it off.

First, JJ, inexplicably tries another arty bombardment.

Ground combat at Darwin (76,124)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 12074 troops, 114 guns, 52 vehicles, Assault Value = 460

Defending force 44686 troops, 764 guns, 784 vehicles, Assault Value = 1416

Japanese ground losses:
436 casualties reported

Squads: 4 destroyed, 22 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 3 disabled

Good to see what you can achieve with long-ahead planning and well read (I'm talking about the manual) players.

Thanks Grollub. All the steps did work well.

1) 18th Div advances on Katherine to draw IJA units south at least one Regiment of 38th Div

2) Gove ready in time to provide LRCAP and logistical support

3) Operational surprise achieved. No garrison on Bathurst. 50% of the IJA infantry in the area at Katherine. No CD guns at Darwin.

4) Merauke ready in time to support 4E bombers. Transfer of bombers to Alice and Merauke apparently did not tip them off on the target. Darwin arifield largely reduced by aerial bombardment.

5) This wasn't part of the plan but the IJA counterattack at Dobo consumed essentially 2 divisions of reserves.

6) Airfield at Bathurst made it safer to disembark the second wave troops at Darwin.

IJN carrier losses in the fight for Port Hedrand made them unable or unwilling to risk a carrier duel over Darwin.

Pretend I didn't read the manual. Why was the Allied Assault Value doubled in the Darwin attacK?

There were no (+) attacker modifiers listed.

Wow - nice result, especially with the bonus of all those damaged aircraft [for which he did not have enough mules to haul them across the desert]!
Which tank crews became aces today?
He was seriously short on combat troops - way more support troops eliminated.
About the prep - he probably had them prepping for Sydney after they took Darwin.

Yes...I suspect the M-10 crews had a field day. Lots of Ronsons of the former 18th Imperial Tank Regt are now scrap metal.

YES!

My Darwin IJA January 1943(c) put purchase really came in big! Well before the time decay nearing options expiration too!

Minus the premium, that's....$753,000,000 USD in 1943(c) terms that M&M now owes Captain Morita.

You might want to check the fine print. I discovered mine was payable in Tannanese dollars. The $1 million Tannanese bill has a pciture of Ensign McGoo.

Whoa - that' s a lot of scrap AFVs! I never even looked at the vehicles destroyed when I made the aces comment - I meant "aircraft destroyed" aces. No doubt there will be a lot of multi-aces in the "vehicle destroyed" category!

Awww man...just like my Zimbabwe dollars investment from a few years back. I thought that $100,000,000,000,000 note with Mugabe's portrait on it would be worth at least something. I couldn't even buy Lesotho, it turns out...

I believe that it's the value (purchasing power parity) of this particular denomination.

I remember once in a high school biology class, a legtimate anatomical question came up regarding The Vajayjay.

A sheltered girl raised her hand. I immediately sensed there was trouble ahead but the teacher called on her.

"What's a vagina?"

Doh! There were a few snickers but I think most of the non-sociopaths in the room felt embarrassment once removed.

With that preamble, here is my question, is that 100 Trillion note real?

We have this new dementia screeing "tool" at work. It's not a trephining drill, it's a list of yes or no questions...about 10. We had a presentation by a health educator trained to administer the screening test and standardized cognitive assessment test.

For about half of the screening tool, a yes answer is deemed a normal variant. For eg., "Do you sometimes misplace your keys?"

For the other half, a yes answer is deemed potentially pathological and the subject is advised to take the entire cognitve screening test for dementia.

Here is one of the critical questions......."Have you ever started to tell a joke and then realized you already told it?"

You do that once and next week you need a drool bib and adult diapers??? Santa Maria!

The complete test is quite carefully standardized for educational level, age......and...wait for it....sex. Yes, that's right. In some fashion, the grading is either easier for men or women

I assume it is standardized for the sex you were born with and not whether you are getting any or not. Anyway, it was a mixed audience (men and women) so I politely asked which sex had to have their scores standardized down. She looked at me quite annoyed and said she "couldn't break the key".

I took that to be admission that men are superior and reflexively snickered a bit. Oh man did she want to kill me. I could see it in her eyes. Thank God women aren't as violent either.

Yes. Prior to 2009 the Zimbabwe hyper-inflation resulted in absurd notes like this getting produced en masse. Very Weimar-republic wheelbarrow-full-of-cash for a loaf of bread sort of thing. Sometime in 2009, they stopped pretending that the Zimbabwe dollar had any value and just recognized de facto denominating in the Rand, USD and Pound.

It would be nice to capture PH to free up some of the infantry and put a lid on Broome from the West. The rest of the LYB's in Oz might oblige us by starving. Probably we can move some of the heavies back to Meekathara and pound the daylights out of PH.

I have one Marine Regt about 20% prepped for Wyndham, but that is it.
