I have been playing the scenario King of the Hill. I've had about 10 goes at it but can't win. If I look like winning as the allies, say most of the axis troops are wiped out, there's 3 turns to go and all I need to do is mop up and move into the victory hexes, the game ends (usually on turn 12 of 15) and records a decisive victory for the axis side! If I'm losing (which is more usual) the game plays through to the end. Is this a problem with the game or have I missed something? Please help.

You're probably running into the battlefield integrity rule... if one side has a certain percentage of its forces destroyed or routed, it's considered 'broken.' If one side is broken, and the other side holds all the victory hexes, the game ends immediately. What's probably happening is that when you think you're winning, your troops have taken enough casualties to have a different opinion.... What are your casualties like when the game ends early?

Hi maxna, We've all been mighty perturbed at the AI for ending games when we want to continue. The AI will end a game if it thinks it can't win, but I guess it will also end it if it thinks that the player cannot win it too! Many of these scenarios are very hard, and I would suggest to a new player to adjust your preferences to make it easier on yourself. Go ahead, kick the crap out of the AI a few times (it feels good!), and re-adjust your settings as you get better. My crystal ball tells me your next question will be "How come I beat hell out of the AI and got a draw?". You'll see that too, I gaurantee it! Don

maxna i'm not sure the last to answers picked up on the fact you said this happens when you are aparently winning and have pretty much wiped out the AI forces ... tell you what to do play it again ..and when the victory screen comes up write down what forces each side had what got killed what didn't and who had which victory hexes and their costs ... then post all that info to the forum here so we can have a better idea of exactly what is happening and can give better advice .. thanks ...

orc4hire's reply sounds like it could be the reason - my forces have taken heavy losses in get close to victory, but then wouldn't you expect heavy losses when taking on an entrenched enemy? I will play the scenario as suggested and tone down the AI a little as I'm playing with all 'reality' options on. Is there anyone out there who has played this scenario as the allies and would be willing to post some advice as to how to approach it? I find it difficult to know what to do and usually find myself moving formations just for the sake of it. Thanks Max

Hadn't tried it before, but just gave it a quick go.... Near as I can figure, here's what you do: Move your infantry up to feel out the German position and expose the enemy units. Since the only way to spot the German units is to move next to them and have the squad gutted by opfire, this will result in the loss of your infantry. Move your tanks up to destroy the German positions revealed by the sacrifice of your infantry, and lose them to uncannily accurate panzerfaust and anti-tank gun fire. Okay, more seriously.... If I were trying this one again, I'd send everyone south. (Only sent half my infantry and most of my tanks south on the first go round). Move everyone except the mortars down south of the hill, then push your recon teams up to try and unmask the German units, follow up with infantry, laying smoke to protect your tanks from the German lasers, er, ATGs. Keep your main force, tanks and infantry together, and don't hurry. Storm the hill from the south, and the enemy in front of it will leave their positions to counter-attack. Cut them down. Punching through in the north or straight ahead would probably work about as well; just keep your troops together and use tanks and infantry to cover each other.
