Why 42? Because 42 is the perfect number. If you don't believe me, wait until you start testing The Grid: http://codeelf.com/games/grid/

Summon wizards, attack, build cities, gamble gold, wreak havoc...

Where did you learn math? A perfect number is the sum of all its factors, except itself. The proper divisors of 42 are:

1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21

which sum to 54 so, 42 is not a perfect number.

What are the only numbers less than 100 that are perfect numbers?

That one box in the middle that say "ASS" pretty much says it all.

42 is the answer. The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything, calculated by an enormous supercomputer over a period of 7.5 million years. Unfortunately no one knows what the question is. Thus, to calculate the Ultimate Question, a special computer the size of a small planet and using organic components was created and named "Earth".

(The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy)

Somebody had to say it.

I wanted to give the answer you gave, but I was worried I might appear too pedantic.

What was the question??
