Thought folks might be interested to hear that the website that is devoted to online play of old SPI titles is now up and running. I haven't got a chance to play yet, but it looks promising, especially if they get lots of the old classics on the site.

Here's the link: www.hexwar.com

Went to the site, and if they can do what they say, I'm impressed.

Now see, Les, you wanted to know if people would pay for a wargame website. Yeah. I'd consider paying for an online game service that has "real" wargames to play like this one apparently does. Looks cool.

Hmmm almost went to bed and missed this.

Glad I looked one last time. Be nice to check when the brain is cleared in the morning.

I went ahead and signed up (free till end of '02) but I will wait to actually pay for this site till I see how viable it is. Not much going on there as far as game play. I downloaded the Bastogne game but was dissapointed because you can only "play" with it when someone is online and actually playing a game. So you can't run a program to check out the game mechanics or how the interface works. It is a direct copy of the old SPI quad game and you can view the map and counters with a graphics viewer but you just can't access the game itself, unless online and playing or watching a game in progress. Does have possibilities.

Yes I too was a bit frustrated that the game is there but not so to speak. I have the files, but have almost no idea what's involved.

I too would not mind a fee per se, although their expected prices look a bit daunting. Not sure they will get far, the price tag looks a bit high.
After all how many people are out there that will pay through the nose to play a game online that was old before the 80's?

I am interested in online capable wargaming, but the premium they expect might kill their idea better than a computer game riddled with bugs.

Fortunately there are programs out there that are just that programs designed to allow person to person board gaming not requiring any thrid party influences.

I was kinda hoping that this link would lead to more of that actually.

For those of you who previously visited the hexwar.com sight before, the Hexwar sight was not working properly. But it is now. If you uninstall the previous download (Bastogne 2.0) and install the new version of Bastogne posted on the website, you can get online and challenge sometime to play. I issued a challenge and am currently playing the Spearhead Scenario right now. The program now seems to work quite well, although I'm getting my butt kicked by the Germans. They just took Bastogne!

How current is that quote though? I was there a few days past.

Also thought this was worth bringing from the site.

How much will it cost?

While we are in the development stage, all play will be free. From 1st January 2003 membership fees will be:

$12.95 a month if paid monthly.
$35.85 for a 3 month subscription i.e. $11.95 a month.
$66.70 for a 6 month subscription i.e. $10.95 a month.
$119.40 for an annual subscription i.e. $9.95 a month.

This might be just a bit farther than the threshold limit for some players.

119.40 for use of the site for one year. EEEEEEEEWWWWWW.

Now earlier in a past post I can be quoted as having said I might pay to visit a site. I also believe I can be quoted as having offered 10 bucks for use of the site in a year.

100 plus bucks a year. Hmmm, I think I will possibly just go taunt some younguns at the highschool and see if I can get them to play a board game perhaps.

Is it just me, or is the expectations of 100 plus bucks a year just a trifle bit insane to be able to play a board game online?

Hey, I'm just letting people know that I've successfully used the site and I'm playing for free for the next couple of weeks. That's all I know. I don't think that it's worth 100 bucks either - at least right now. Maybe if the get more games on line it will be.

Especially when you can play the same kind of games with VASSAL online for free.
