yea, I would think so. So far I am trying to learn my way around in it. So far not bad but the jury is still out. Does have single player, multi-player. Looks polished.

The manual is available on Steam and Youtube has quite some ingame footage.

It acually doesn't look bad.

What ive seen so far is....I am still learning the game.

1.  Turn based.
2.  Graphics are excellent.
3.  Very Large tech reasearch,planets....with different assets.
4.  Eight races
5.  Once a enemy ships enter your system(or you theirs)...battle screen will load up.  Two options are-auto or manual.  If you go auto there is no load of a battle screen....just results.  If manual a battle screen loads up and the battle graphics is excellent.  Reminds me of how the Starwars Empire battle screens looked.
6.  Movement is from Star system to star system
7.  Reminds me of MOO3 on some of the interface but the game so far is much better.
8.  You can build your own ships but not sure yet on the depth of custom building.
9.  You can hire heroes...they help in battle...not sure how yet, but they do.  They cost you.
10. Currency in the game is a type of Dust.  Goes with the story line.
11. Each turn is One year in time...again turn based game
12. Looks like a form of influence works in the game -kind of locking your systems together. Similar to the civ series.

This is about all I am sure of for now.....still alot to work out and judge.

Going to have to read the manual and do the tutorial on this one....compared to the other AI players in the game, I am not doing so well and Ive played this type alot.  I am way behind them....Ive got the game set on normal.  So the AI is doing something.  I got a draw in one battle with defensive ships but lost two battles with scouts.

Wow thanks!

I have been thinking of getting this. They currently have 2 different editions for sale on Gamergate plus I get a 15% IGN Prime Member Discount, so may get it in the next day or so. I am still debating whether I should be getting Distant Worlds before this one though. Anyways, will check some more reviews.

Thanks again for your feedback my Friend.

Distant world is much bigger..and probley more complicated. Real time pauseable. A excellent game. I have it and the add-on. But stop messing with it after I couldn't get it to run after upgrading it. So you may want to give it a look also.

Yep I am pretty torn between the 2 of them. Would like something engaging but don't want anything way too difficult to understand that would make be quit the game too soon.

In your playtime of both, is there one that you recommend more than the other? Price is NOT a problem!

Hmmmm, thats a hard one. Distant worlds is more of a Witp in space but not turned base. It has huge maps with hundred of planets. There is alot going to in the game at a much faster pace, but you can pause it.

Endless Space is more like...MOO2 and 3 but much better than 3. Much slower pace and probley not near as difficult as Distant Worlds.

For me it would be Endless Space. Another thing is Distant worlds -space combat is similar to Gal Civ's. ES combat goes to a combat screen and looks much more better. It is a 3D screen similar to StarWars Empires game.

If price isn't a problem then DW + ROTS + Legends (the two expansions) is a very good game, probably the deepest of the current space 4Xs.

I've also had ES since the Alpha release and it is a very good 4X as well, however a couple of the design decisions are irritating; it isn't truly turn based as AI/other player actions happen during your turn so you don't have the nice advantage of a TBS of being able to contemplate your next move for as long as you want, this also is evident in the battle resolution where you have to make decisions against a timer.

A third, potentially very good option for you might be Armada 2526 + the Supernova expansion.

Wolfe, what about the time factor....lets say its 3100AD, if the AI continues while you set up your turn, then would they also move ahead time while you sit still. Is this true?

No, that's not true. I don't completely agree with Wolfe's description either other than multiple battle situations can be irritating! If a battle is initiated, you have a limited amount of time to go to the battle and take control. If you have several battles happening at once, you are likely not able to control very many of them. If you just want to auto-resolve them all, it's not an issue at all.

Battle itself is a slightly more complex rock-paper-scissors approach where there are three types of attacks (kinetic, lasers, missile) and corresponding three types of defense. You can design your ship to be a jack of all trades or concentrate in one area but then in the latter case you run the risk of your opponent loading up on defense of that type making your ship very ineffective. Besides all the variation within those combinations of weapons/defense, you have additional attributes (like extra armor/repair), additional hulls (some focus on offense, some on defense) and 'hero' leaders who help add to the variety of options.

Controlling a battle is a bit simplistic too. You have strategies (some people equate them to just 'cards') that you can play in three rounds. Some strategies can overpower your opponents strategy (like 'sabotage' cards can overpower 'offense' or something like that) giving you an extra advantage and even this is a form of rock-paper-scissors. But for the most part, you watch your fleets just battle it out over three phases. I guess I would liken it closest to how Dominions 3 works where you setup the strategy and just let them go at it (though with generally only 1-15 units instead of the hundreds in Dom3).

A lot of people do get hung up on the simplistic approach to combat but there is a deep game of colonization and resource management as well. In this regards, it's far deeper than say SoTS2. You might think of this aspect as more Civ like where you have to manage food, science, production and 'dust' (ES version of gold). There are resources in the universe that are required to build certain units (think 'strategic' resources like Civ) and resources that give you certain advantages (think 'luxury' resources like Civ).

All in all I think it's a really fun game at a good price. That's not to say the Matrix games mentioned in this thread aren't in their own right but if you are a fan of the genre, or want to find a game to introduce you to the genre, I think this one really is a good buy.

Edited for formatting.

The game won't move onto the next turn until you click on Next Turn. It will however start a battle (defaulting to auto resolve) or move onto the next battle phase in a battle you are manually fighting if you don't react in time.

However within your turn at you could easily miss movements of AI fleets and if you were for instance to wait to long in deciding whether or not to move to a new system find that the AI has got there before you.

None of the above is bad in itself but it makes the game feel that it requires more of a "twitch" RTS mentality at times rather than the more relaxed pace of a TBS.

In comparison though DW is a (pausable) RTS I find it to have more of the relaxed and considered feel of a TBS, the speed controls and pause/auto-pause means you never feel that you have to make hasty/twitch decisions or that you are missing something important or interesting just because you happen to be concentrating on something else at the time.

ES feels to me as if it has been optimised for multi-player rather than single player experience in some of the design decisions. Not playing or wanting to play multi-player this is a negative for me.

Which seems to be confirmed by this comment by the developers on their forum

Common gameplay reports that are not bugs

1. Enemy AI ships move during player turn

The game is set up to be multiplayer, so this is not actually a bug. Many players "expect" that the AI will not move simultaneously in a single player game, so they have filed this as a bug. You may not expect this, but it is not a bug.

EDIT

Fair comment from Joram. In particular and even given my above comments I do agree that "All in all I think it's a really fun game at a good price"

I actually rather like the battle system as I hate having a good TBS game "interupted" by RTS battles. For me what ES has done is a fun alternative to always hitting Auto-Resolve in 4X games. Why they had to add a timer to it I don't know.

I’ve got to disagree on the fun aspect of the game. It’s only fun if you don’t mind fighting repetitive battles during a turn due to fleet size limits. 20 fleets of 5 ships each have to be killed one 5 ship battle at a time in a single turn to resolve the conflicts for the turn in that single system (rinse and repeat for other potential hotspot systems), so you either hit auto-resolve repeatedly or you try and sit through 20 mirror image battles that take about 2 minutes or more each to resolve using the 3D engine...

Either way it’s less than appealing as a game system and for me at least caused me to shelve it the first day. The campaign map is fun with some great ideas, but the battle system ruins the game and I haven’t got the patience to try and get to the end game with such a horribly time wasting system.

I also hate that all battles are on a very short timer with no option to pause anything. Choosing the battle cards (a novel idea but wasted due to the implementation used) is kind of pointless because you don’t have anywhere near enough time to inspect enemy fleets and decide which kinds of weapons or countermeasures to boost with any real thought put into it, so it turns what could have been an enjoyable thoughtful part of the game into a simple crapshoot that penalizes you if you don’t react fast enough.

In short, the combat system simply sucks as implemented, I say don’t waste your money.

Absolutely agree with this.

Fired up a few of my Space 4Xs yesterday including ES, DW and found myself again spending by far the most time and having the most fun with Armada 2526 Supernova even though there are newer and shinier toys in the box

Thanks for your comments gang. I may purchase Endless Space as it seems to be a little easier going and I don't feel like spending countless hours in "Tutorial" mode. But will purchase Distant Worlds and it's expansions as they are Matrix Games, and I am somewhat of a Matrix\Slitherine fanboy! Also with Decisive Campaigns: Code Blue and the new Afrika Corps expansion coming out in the next 2 weeks, I will have spent some money here to Matrix/Slitehrine.

Once more thanks for the feedback gang!
