Combat

Tavoy was attacked by 37 X B-29 and 12 X P-38J in the early morning. A lone George was aloft and it got flamed before it's pilot knew what hit him. The airfield was moderately damaged and there were light casualties. The Japanese artillery was ineffective and the Allied guns caused moderately heavy casualties on the Japanese. The IJA 56th Brigade was hit by 35 X Liberator VI (1 destroyed, 1 damaged), 13 X B-25J (1 damaged), 2 X Mosquito FB.VI, 6 X Thunderbolt II and 2 X Corsair IV. The lone George in the air fled and the unit took heavy casualties. Then the IJA 49th Division had it's turn as at the hands of 67 X Liberator VI (3 damaged), 38 X B-24J (2 damaged), 16 X B-25J, 46 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), 53 X Thunderbolt II (3 damaged), 13 X Corsair IV and 12 X Spitfire VIII. The George had the misfortune of going from the frying pan into the fire as it was promptly dispatched. The unit suffered very heavy losses.

Bangkok was swept by 32 X P-38J and 39 X Zeke and 27 X George challenged them. 16 Zekes went down and another was damaged while 19 of the Georges were trashed. A Lightning was destroyed and another suffered damage.

Koepang's port was the target of 30 X B-24J and the AA fire knocked 1 of them down and hit 7 others while the port took light damage. There were a few secondary explosions seen and casualties were placed at light.

Dili's port was attacked by 38 X B-24J and the flak killed 1 and damaged 3 others as no damage was done to the target. There were a few secondary explosions claimed and losses to the personnel was thought to have been light.

Lae had it's airfield attacked by 48 X B-17E. A CAP of a Jack and 2 X Tony met the bombers and the Tonys were damaged while the AA fire killed a bomber and damaged 7 more. The airfield was lightly damaged and a couple of secondary explosions were claimed.

Lunga was hit by 100 X B-24J for heavy damage to the airfield, many secondary explosions, 2 X Dinah destroyed and very heavy losses while 9 B-17Es were damaged.

The 2nd Amphibious Brigade, on Palau, was jumped by 34 X SB2C (6 damaged) and 16 X F6F. The Japanese had moderate losses.

On Kwajalein 40 X TBM and 7 X FM-2 did light damage to the airfield, destroyed a Betty and inflicted negligible casualties on the troops while having a TBM get damaged by the ground fire.

The Allied TF located 88 miles SW of Kwajalein was attacked by 14 X Betty and the CAP of 48 X FM-2 went to work. 12 Bettys went down and 12 FM-2 were damaged in the running fight. 2 of the Bettys managed to drop their fish, but failed to score a hit.

Stalin is busy studying a map and discussing aircraft facing the Japanese. “I want to know that we can sweep the skies clear of them. I don't want to hear excuses about this or that. I also will not send any formations of troops from the west to fight the Japanese until the Germans have finally been crushed and their country lies in ruins.”

FDR has given his final approval to an Operation Egomania. The troops and supplies continually flow forward in the anticipated launch of this operation. The secrecy surrounding it leaves most of the people normally in the loop totally in the dark.

Phil sits in a chair idly staring out of the window of the hospital ward as he squeezes and relaxes and then repeats the exercise with the tennis ball in his right hand. The doctors want him to increase the strength in the arm. Later he will stand facing a wall and “walk” his hand up and down the wall using his fingers on his right hand as legs. The boredom is driving him nuts until a new nurse appears. Now that's more like it, he thinks. The young woman is very pretty and has a radiant smile that all of the men in the ward are noticing.

Elaine is still waiting to hear from Gil and her sister is trying to cheer her up.

Combat

The SS Aspro, 28 miles NW of Amboina, was attacked by 4 X PG and 2 X PC. The sub escaped without taking any damage.

The SS Cavalla, 79 miles SE of Shimizu, was being hunted by 5 X PC when she turned the table on them and hit a PC with 3 fish. The Japanese vessel quickly disappeared and then the remaining Japanese vessels relentlessly pounded her. Ultimately the Cavalla succumbed to her damage and will forever remain on patrol.

The SS Barbel, 83 miles S of Truk, slipped through the screen of an AP and hit it with a torpedo. The vessel was burning and troops were observed going into the water in an attempt to escape the flames. The 5 PGs tried and failed to locate the sub.

The SS Flasher, 94 miles SW of Manila, stumbled on a lone AK and proceeded to hit the hapless target with 2 torpedoes.

Tavoy had it's airfield attacked by 36 X B-29, 11 X P-38J and 2 X Corsair IV. A single George was on hand and it was destroyed immediately. The target was moderately damaged and there were negligible casualties. Later another 80 X B-29 arrived and added heavy damage to the airfield, a single secondary explosion and moderate personnel losses. The IJA 30th Division was attacked by 98 X Liberator VI (1 damaged), 28 X B-24J, 27 X B-25J (1 damaged), 47 X Mosquito FB.VI, 53 X Thunderbolt II, 9 X Corsair IV and 4 X Spitfire VIII. A George was in the air and it was blasted out of the sky quickly despite another George arriving and trying to aid it. The second George's pilot was dispatched to his ancestors also. The unit had very heavy casualties. Artillery exchanges caused no Allied casualties while the Japanese had moderate losses.

Bangkok was swept by 32 X P-38J and the Japanese ran 31 X Zeke, 14 X George and 18 X Jack at them. The Japanese shot down 3 Lightnings and damaged another 3 of them, but they lost 16 Zekes, 4 Georges (1 damaged) and 12 Jacks.

Lautem had it's airfield moderately damaged by 35 X B-24D. The AA fire destroyed 1 bomber and damaged another. There was a report of a single secondary explosion and casualties were thought to have been heavy.

Lae's airfield was attacked by 42 X B-24J and a CAP of a Jack and a pair of Tonys halfheartedly attacked them. 2 Tonys were damaged as was a bomber. The target had moderate damage and there were a couple of secondary explosions.

Palau was raided by 12 X SB2C (5 damaged) and 15 X F4U-1D. The airstrip was very lightly damaged.

An Allied attack at Krung Thep witnessed the Allied troops successfully storming across the river. Both sides had extremely heavy losses and the Japanese defenses were weakened.

A Helen attacked the SS Amberjack, 20 miles SW of Kunashiri Jima and the sub reported that it was hit. She is now heading back to Dutch Harbor with light systems damage and light flooding.

A Frances attacked the SS Bashaw 142 miles E of Tokyo, but did not damage her.

The SS Wahoo, 93 miles N of Brunei, attacked 3 X MSW and hit 1 of them with a torpedo, sinking it.

An IJN DD and MSW encountered a mine field at Ominato and started seeping operations. The MSW then hit a mine and disappeared is a flash.

Lunga was attacked by 86 X B-24J and the port took heavy damage, many secondary explosions were seen and the troops had moderate losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was jumped by 9 Helens and had light casualties.

Palau was attacked by 7 X SB2C (4 damaged) and 13 X F4U-1D. The airstrip had very light damage and there were extremely light personnel losses.

Tavoy's defenses were assaulted by the Allied troops and they made small gains as both sides sustained extremely heavy casualties.

An Allied attack at Krung Thep caused a further reduction of the Japanese defenses, pushing them back and both sides had extremely heavy losses.

Allied commanders feel that Krung Thep will fall with the next push and that Tavoy will either be evacuated or will fall with continued Allied pressure. There are those that doubt the rose colored view that some hold.

He conned her into a game of Hearts earlier today and he enjoyed the time, otherwise he's bored.

Stick is taking a day off today and he's really feeling that he could use it. Of course he's worried that the Japanese will throw some planes into the fight and he'll miss them. Even in an emergency he won't be flying today as his plane is getting a major overhaul and it might not be done for tomorrow either.

This is the first time since the start of the war that the Allies have taken the VP lead. I put little stock in this on a grand view of the game, but it is encouraging.

Jumping up 200 points and bringing the Japanese down 60 points in one turn is encouraging indeed. But I think it will be the exception rather than the rule. How long until you have the airfields on Iwo Jima operational?

My airfields are usually up and running with fighters and recon within a couple of days or so, depending on the damage done to them. I try to bring plenty of support troops and supplies along so that once I hold a base they come ashore and get to work. VPs vary for the Japanese as I believe Steve is having an increasingly tough time keeping some places in supply.

Combat

A Dinah tried to attack the SS Razorback 18 miles W of Batan Island, but radar gave enough of a warning to give the sub ample time to dive deep enough to avoid damage.

The SS Flasher attacked a lone AK before daylight about 37 miles NW of Bataan. She hit her victim with the deck gun 3 times and 5 fish slammed into the wreck, sinking it. Later a Jake attempted to attack the Flasher, but the sub got away, aided by radar detecting the plane.

Tavoy's airfield was moderately damaged by 46 X B-29 and 10 X Spitfire VIII. There was a secondary explosion claimed and troop losses were light. Allied artillery accounted for moderately heavy Japanese casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had moderate casualties dished out to them by 4 Helens.

Bangkok was swept by 33 X P-38J and the Japanese countered with 17 X Zeke, 15 X George and 10 X Jack. Although outnumbered the Lightnings destroyed 5 Zekes, 12 Georges and a Jack at no cost to themselves.

At Krung Thep the exhausted Allied troops take another day to rest. It's expected that they'll be knocking on the gates to Bangkok very soon, but for now they regroup.

Sam is resting on the ship waiting to depart for a rear area and some rest when the word is passed that the 25th Division will assault an island named Tori Shima. When Sam sees a map he grumbles that it's even closer to Japan and it's sure to draw trouble. He's told that the island is vacant, but he smells trouble. “When are we going to get replacements and some rest?” he asks the company CO who just looked at him and shrugged.

No drills today so Slim and his boys are taking it easy after they saw to their 782 gear. Suddenly a guy from another company goes running by in his skivvies. He's being chased by a bunch of laughing lads in dungarees. Slim said, “I'd like to know what that was all about.”

Stick is not flying again as his plane isn't ready. He is on a standby status with another bird though. He's just lying in the sun with his flight gear next to him. This might be the first time in ages that he's been truly relaxed and the feeling defies description.

Combat

An Ann attacked the SS Capelin, hitting it. The sub is retiring for Ulithi as she has light systems damage and flooding.

The SS Sterlet made a surface attack on an AK. The victim absorbed 2 hits from the sub's deck gun and a torpedo also tore into the target. Soldiers were observed diving into the water in an attempt to escape the flames.

Tavoy was struck by 33 X B-29 and 5 X Corsair IV. A lone George was in the area and ran. A Superfortress was damaged by the AA fire. The airfield was moderately damaged, a single secondary explosion was seen and Japanese casualties were light. Later another raid comprised of 89 X B-29 attacked and flak damaged 1 of them. The airfield absorbed moderately heavy damage, another secondary explosion was recorded and there were very light troop losses. The IJA 49th Division was on the receiving end of an attack made by 72 X Liberator VI, 37 X Mosquito FB.VI, 29 X B-24J Liberator (2 damaged), 25 X B-25J Mitchell (4 damaged), 46 X Thunderbolt II, 8 X Corsair IV and 9 X Spitfire VIII. A single George was in the air until the escorts dealt with him. The unit sustained very heavy casualties. Later it was the turn of the IJA 34th Ind. Mixed Brigade to be hit as 35 X Liberator VI (1 damaged), 6 X Mosquito FB.VI, 9 X B-24J Liberator, 16 X B-25J Mitchell (1 destroyed, 1 damaged), 13 X Thunderbolt II and 3 X Spitfire VIII roared in on it. The Japanese had heavy losses. An Allied artillery bombardment caused heavy Japanese casualties.

Bangkok was under a CAP of 29 X Zeke, 18 X George and 15 X Jack when a fighter sweep of 37 X P-38J arrived on the scene. The battle was a bloody affair that ended as quickly as it started. The Japanese has 11 Zekes shot down (1 damaged), 14 Georges were destroyed and 4 Jacks will never return to base. A Lightning was splashed and 3 others were damaged in the fight.

Lautem was subjected to an attack by 45 X B-24J and AA fire damaged 8 of the planes. The airfield took moderate damage, a secondary explosion was reported, a Dinah was trashed and troop losses were moderate.

Lae had it airfield bombed by 45 X B-17E and between the CAP of a Jack and 2 Tonys and the flak 3 bombers were damaged. A Jack took some damage and the airfield was lightly hit and a secondary explosion was noted.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was jumped by 9 X Helen and all of the bombs fell harmlessly.

Palau had the attention of 7 Helldivers and 9 Thunderbolts and the airfield was very lightly damaged and a secondary explosion was seen.

The ships carrying the 25th Division are loading supplies and then they sail for Tori Shima. In the meantime Sam is talking to what's left of his squad and says, “When we hit the island take your time, we're in no hurry to get shot. Be smart, stay away from the easy going. Most of all remember that we never go the same way twice.” The guys are sick with apprehension. First they fought on Eniwetok, then it was Saipan, Iwo Jima and Bonin. The feeling among the troops is that this is something they would rather leave for another outfit.

Slim is lying under a tree looking down at the airfield. He says to the guy nearby, “I ain't never seen so many planes before. Look at those big ones, the ones with 4 engines on them. I'll bet they can kill lots of our friendly Japs with their bombs.” The man says something about the rumors of a new super plane the is at least twice that size. “If it can carry twice the bombs, then I'll like it twice as much,” says Slim. The man says good bye as his outfit is shipping out for some islands named Bonin. That's when Sam notices the he's a Sea Bee.

Captain Demesa hands a page containing a message for red to send to the company offices. The Palawan needs some yard time and he wants to get her in for the first time since before the war stated. Red looks up after reading the message and grins at his captain who pats him on the shoulder and says, “Send it.”

Leuna-Meresburg was hit by the 8th Air Force again.

An Alf spotted the CA Chicago about 41 miles S of Tori Shima and the Chicago reports being hit. There is some minor chipping of paint as a result of the attack.

Tavoy underwent an attack by 40 X B-29 and a lone George had the audacity to attack them. The Japanese fighter was driven off after being damaged and the AA damaged a bomber. The airfield was lightly damaged, there were a couple of secondary explosions and personnel losses were light. Another George was on patrol and 34 X B-29 appeared, but this pilot ran. The airfield took moderate damage from the rain of bombs and casualties were light. The IJA 30th Division was hit by 33 X Liberator VI (1 damaged), 6 X B-24J (2 damaged) and 8 X Thunderbolt II. A George was in the area, but vacated before it could be engaged. The unit had heavy casualties. Then it was the IJA 34th Ind. Mixed Brigade's turn to be hit as 69 X Liberator VI, 33 X B-24J, 53 X Thunderbolt II and 10 X Spitfire VIII attacked it. 2 Georges tried to attack the Allied planes, but were dispatched by the Spits. 2 of the Liberators were damaged by flak and the unit had very heavy losses. The Allied troops attacked the Japanese positions and made some gains. Both sides had extremely heavy losses.

Dili was the target for 20 X B-24D, but the cloud cover prevented the planes from hitting anything of value. Later another raid came on and the clouds had broken up. The 101 X B-25J (5 damaged) and 64 X P-38J (1 damaged) hit the port for light damage, scored many secondary explosions and caused heavy casualties. 42 X B-24D then had their turn and the AA fire damaged 1 plane. The port was lightly hit, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were light.

Lae was under a CAP of a Jack and 2 Tonys when 48 X B-24J made their attack. The fighters withdrew and the airfield took moderate damage, a secondary explosion was seen and there were light casualties.

The 11th Special Base Force, at Krung Thep, was attacked by 15 X B-25J (2 damaged), 46 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 damaged) and 14 X P-38J. The unit had heavy losses. The 18th UK Division was bombed by 20 X Frances and had light casualties. Then the 25th Indian Division was struck by 6 X Frances and the unit sustained light losses. Krung Thep's defenses underwent an assault and barely managed to hold as both sides sustained extremely heavy casualties. The Allied troops did make small territorial gains though.

Bangkok was swept by 41 X P-38J who dove out of the sun and hit the CAP of 26 X Zeke, 12 X George and 20 X Jack. The combat was over quickly and the Japanese lost 10 Zekes (4 damaged), 8 Georges and 2 Jacks while the Allies had 2 P-38Js shot down and 3 others were damaged.

“Welcome to sunny California,” says Hoppy as Gil enters the barracks. “I've save you a bunk with a view, but Donny got here first and he gets the window.” Now that the Lucky 11 is assembling an Mather Field in California they'll be getting down to business. “You probably are wondering if our plane is ready for us, Hoppy continues, “It hasn't arrived from the Boeing factory yet so we get to cool our heels for a while. Once it gets here and we marry up with it they'll give us some time to check it out with some flight time. Gentlemen of the Lucky 11 will have time to kill until whenever. Let's go Gil and grab us some chow and then visit the area off base. Gil agrees and he grabs a shower and a clean uniform.

Sam stands at the ship's rail watching as others are moving to and from the docking area. Once the entire division and it's supplies are done being loaded they will depart for Tori Shima.

Sandy is preparing a list of all of the things that they need. She's careful to put coffee at the top of the list so Dave doesn't fret, like he'd forget it. In a few days they'll head into town at daybreak and hit the shops as they open.

The company responded to the captain's request much faster than anticipated. Red rereads the message and shakes his head as he mumbles to himself, “The skipper won't like this.” He than takes it to Captain Demesa's cabin and knocks. “Come,” is the response. Red enters and hands the piece of paper over. Demesa reads it, shakes his head and mutters a few obscenities. The Palawan will continue it' duties and when the Navy has time in a yard she will then proceed to a location to be determined at a time to be determined.

Combat

A PBM Mariner attacked a Japanese sub near Koepang and reported hitting it.

A PB4Y located an AK 133 miles SE of Paramushiro Jima and claimed a hit.

The SS Tilefish, 23 miles E of Wenchow, was roughly handled by a DD and 5 X MSW. Not long after he evaded her tormentors an AP was spotted and attacked. The ship was carrying troops and the 2 torpedoes that hit it forced the Japanese into the inhospitable waters. The sub is now returning to base with some light systems damage.

Thursday Island was invaded by Allied troops who had moderate losses.

The SS Razorback, 28 miles NW of Batan Island, was pounded by 4 PCs after she managed to hit the 5th one with a torpedo, sinking it. Now the sub is heading for the barn with light systems damage.

Tavoy's airfield was pounded by 39 X B-29, 5 X P-38J and 13 X Corsair IV. A Superfort was damaged as the target was moderately damaged and there were light casualties among the personnel there. Another raid of 35 X B-29 arrived and dropped their loads adding moderate damage to the airstrip, caused some secondary explosions and inflicted light losses. An Allied attack was made and repulsed with the Allied forces having extremely heavy losses. The Japanese paid with very heavy casualties of their own.

Dili was attacked by 27 X B-24J and the port took light damage, there were many reported secondary explosions and casualties were very light.

Lae had it's usual CAP of a Jack and 2 X Tony aloft when 39 X B-24D came in for an attack. The fighters skedaddled and the airfield had light damage done to it .

The 5th New Chinese Corps, still stuck in place and starving to death, was futilely raided by 6 X Helen. The Japanese must know by now that there are no targets left among the few survivors.

Palau got the attention of 7 Helldivers (1 destroyed, 3 damaged) and 9 Thunderbolts. The airstrip had very light damage, a secondary explosion was seen and there were very light casualties.

Japanese artillery at Krung Thep inflicted very light losses on the Allied troops.

Sam hates these ships and the only good point is that the target is so close to the departure point. Supposedly they were to have been brought back up to strength, but now they've been told that the division will rebuild after they take the island. “You can always count on the Army to screw things up,” says one of the guys. Sam nods and lies down in his bunk thinking about the invasion and for some reason he's having troubles swallowing the unopposed line that the brass has handed down. He thinks that if it's such a cakewalk why send a whole division?

FDR addressed the nation with a Memorial Day speech. He extolled the virtues of the Allied cause in the great struggle that they were engaged in. He reminded the people that the evils of Germany and Japan must be defeated so that mankind could bask in the light of day.

Dave turns off his radio after the President's radio address is finished and he says to Sandy, “What a load of hogwash. We're killing one another for land, minerals and power. Good and evil isn't part of the picture. Mark my words that the US will emerge from this war calling the shots for years to come and our good friends in Russia will be on the other side of the fence.” Sandy isn't surprised by her father's outburst as he's against all war. He served in the military in the last war and doesn't like to talk about it other than saying it was horrible. “I fought in a war to end all wars and look where it got us a scant 20 years later, back into another war that's even bigger.”

The British took Arce.

Combat

At Thursday Island the Allied landings proceed with heavy casualties. The base has changed hands once more and now the Allied forces will attempt to hold it.

The SS Whale, 33 miles E of Paramushiro Jima, attacked an unescorted AK before sunup and hit it 3 times with the deck gun and 3 torpedoes.

Tavoy was bombed by 34 X B-29, 12 X Corsair IV and 9 X Spitfire VIII. The port was lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions claimed and personnel losses were very light.

Lae was raided by 41 X B-17E who did light damage to the airstrip and caused a secondary explosion.

The IJA 50th Division, near Krung Thep, was attacked by 23 X B-24J (2 damaged) and 32 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 damaged). The unit sustained heavy casualties. Then it was the IJA 37th Ind. Mixed Brigade's turn with 21 X B-24J (3 damaged) and 14 X Mosquito FB.VI doing the honors. The Japanese had heavy losses. The Japanese artillery made lots of noise, but failed to do any damage.

At Tavoy the Allied big guns inflicted moderate losses on their adversaries.

With the CV Yorktown undergoing repairs at Mare Island LCDR Christopher Fenton of VF-5 has plenty of time on his hands. Chris has flown 82 combat missions and has 7 kills to his credit, but for now he's a tourist. San Francisco is a nice city, but he's a country boy at heart so now that he's been cut loose with a couple of weeks on his hands he's at the train station trying to get home. He wants to surprise his family and girl, Emily, so mums the word on his plans.

Gene likes his welding job at the yard and is keeping his nose clean and doing extra shifts as needed. By the time Sundays roll around he's so beat that he doesn't even want to get out of bed. He grunts at the thought of 3 more days of work to get to Sunday, his only day off. His bank account has been growing by leaps and bounds, but he feels guilty about not being in the armed forces to fight. His uncle tells him that if the government thought that what he was doing wasn't so important he would've been drafted long ago. This really doesn't help as Gene feels a sense of guilt.

All of the Lucky 11 have now been reassembled, but the word is that they have to wait before their plane arrives. They aren't the only aircrew without anything to do so before you know it they have started a baseball game. The base has all of the stuff that they need and somehow somebody has even managed to obtain some cold Cokes.

A German counter attack was repulsed N of Jassy.

Stalin OKed a summer offensive, Operation Bagration, to destroy Army Group Center.

Allied troops come over the beach at Merauke, taking heavy casualties.

Allied ships encountered a mine field at Tori Shima. Allied troops landed taking heavy casualties. The DD Worden hit a mine and was burning. Allied forces captured the base with an assault that met virtually no opposition.

The SS Plunger, 81 miles NW of Dili, attacked an AK and hit it with her deck gun 5 times and with 2 fish. Japanese troops were reported as going into the water as the ship went down.

Tavoy was attacked by 21 X B-29 and 10 X P-38J. The port was lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions and troop losses were moderate. Another B-29 raid of 24 planes arrived and added light damage to the port, many more secondary explosions and moderate casualties. The IJA 30th Division was served moderate losses by 36 X Liberator VI (3 damaged). The IJA 34th Ind. Mixed Brigade was pounced on by 76 X Liberator VI, 64 X Thunderbolt II (6 damaged), 9 X Corsair IV and 9 X Spitfire VIII. The unit suffered very heavily. Tavoy was pounded by Allied artillery for moderate Japanese losses.

Kwajalein was attacked by 22 X PB4Y and 3 X P-47D. A bomber was downed and another took damage. The airfield was lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions and the personnel had negligible losses. 56 X SB2C (6 damaged), 36 X TBF Avenger (1 damaged) and 15 X F6F Hellcat then hit and caused moderate damaged to the airfield, light damage to the port, many secondary explosions were seen, a sub was hit by a bomb and personnel had light losses. Another strike of 32 X SB2C (1 damaged) and 23 X P-47D Thunderbolt came in and added light damage to the airfield and a secondary explosion.

Lae was hit by 48 X B-24J for moderate damage to the airstrip and extremely light casualties.

The IJA 50th Division, at Krung Thep, was attacked by 17 X B-24J and 27 X Mosquito FB.VI. There were 37 Zekes on hand to meet them and The Allies lost 2 X B-24J (6 damaged) and 9 X Mosquito FB.V (8 damaged) while 3 Zekes were killed and 3 were shot up. The unit had extremely light losses. The 18th UK Division was jumped by 15 X Frances and 10 were destroyed by the 22 X P-38J supplying a LRCAP. Losses were light for the unit. The 25th Indian Division was visited by 6 X Frances and the LRCAP of 22 X P-38J downed 5 of them while having 2 fighters damaged. The Japanese gunners caused light Allied losses.

An Allied attack about 55 miles N of Changsha resulted in no territorial gains, very heavy Chinese losses and heavy Japanese casualties. This was an unordered attack.

A British general was heard to remark that the Japanese defenses in Burma are bleeding the Allied troops white and that this defensive strategy used by the Japanese should be called the Vampire Defense.

Sam is relieved that the island fell so easily, but is dismayed to learn that they will be sitting there for a while. “We're right under the Jap's noses and are bound to have troubles. We can't be this close to Japan and them leave us alone” The guys are happily lazing around when Sam rousts them and announces that they have the honor of accompanying him on a patrol.

Stick's plane is as good as new and the crew chief teasingly says, “Be careful with her and try not to get her shot up.” Stick said that he would do his best and thanked the guys who spent so many tiring hours working on the bird. He figures that he'll be flying over Ulithi or Yap tomorrow and if he's on ground attack it's probable that he'll get hit.

Landings at Merauke continued with light losses and the attack on the base took it easily as the few Japanese in the area melted away.

A Japanese AP hit a mine at Dili and was reported to be on fire. A raid of 27 X B-24D caused light damage to the port.

At Merak a Japanese AO hit a mine and was burning.

The SS Haddock, 88 miles NE of Tarakan, attacked a TK being escorted by 5 DDs and hit it with 2 torpedoes. The escorts then hunted and found the sub, but failed to damage her.

Lae was bombed by 38 X B-24 D and the airfield was moderately damaged and there was a secondary explosion reported.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was futilely attacked by 4 X Helen. There is nothing to hit as the unit is all but a ghost.

Kwajalein was attacked by 50 X SB2C (1 destroyed, 6 damaged), 36 X TBF (8 damaged) and 15 X F6F. The airstrip took light damage as did the port and there was a single secondary explosion. Then 31 X SB2C (1 downed, 4 damaged) and 23 X P-47D attacked and added light damage to the airfield and caused very light troop losses.

The SS Plunger, 184 miles NW of Dili, attacked a solitary AP, hitting it 3 times with her gun and 2 fish. The AP fought back, hitting the sub.

At Krung Thep the Allies had light casualties from an artillery bombardment.

Tavoy was attacked by the Allied forces and the assault was halted in it's tracks. Both sides sustained extremely heavy losses.

A Japanese bombardment about 79 miles NW of Changsha failed to accomplish anything except the expenditure of ammunition.

The situation in Burma seems to have become a stalemate once more. Unless more troops are found to throw at the Japanese the Allied advances seem to have been stopped.

The Soviets and Romanians began secret talks in Stockholm.

The first shuttle raid was made as 130 B-17s flew from Tripoli to bomb Debrecen in Hungary and then landed on a Soviet airfield at Poltava in the Ukraine.

US troops are now only 20 miles from Rome.

Combat

A minefield was detected when an AO struck one of them at Teloekbetoeng. The explosion did heavy damage to the vessel and caused fires to rage.

At Batavia a couple of IJN DDs found a minefield.

Ichang was attacked by 78 X B-25J and 38 X P-40N. A CAP of 17 X Jack, 6 X Nick and 32 X Tony engaged the Chinese planes and they suffered 4 Jacks destroyed (5 damaged), 4 Nicks were trashed and 6 Tonys were shot down and another 13 were damaged. The Chinese lost 12 Mitchells and had another dozen damaged while they had 23 of the Warhawks killed. The airfield was lightly damaged, there were a few secondary explosions and casualties were moderate. It was not a good start for the reintroduction of the Chinese Air Force.

Tavoy was raided by 32 X B-29 and the Japanese had light casualties. Another strike of 42 X B-29 did light damage to the port and caused light personnel losses. The IJA 30th Division was attacked by 56 X Liberator VI (1 damaged), 59 X Thunderbolt II (1 damaged), 13 X Corsair IV and 10 X Spitfire VIII. The Japanese unit had very heavy losses. Then the IJA 49th Division was hit by 31 X Liberator VI, 2 X Thunderbolt II, 2 X Corsair IV for moderate casualties. Allied artillery delivered moderate casualties to the Japanese troops.

Dili was hit by 32 X B-24D for moderate damage to the port and there were many secondary explosions seen.

Kwajalein was targeted by 21 X PB4Y and 23 X P-47D. The AA fire damaged 2 of the bombers and the airstrip took very light damage. Another attack was made by 51 X SB2C (3 damaged), 30 X TBF (1 destroyed, 3 damaged) and 13 X F6F Hellcat. The airfield was lightly damaged and there was a secondary explosion.

Lunga was hit by 103 X B-24J for heavy damage to the airfield, moderate damage to the port, a large number of secondary explosions were reported, 3 Dinahs were left burning and the troops had moderate casualties.

The IJA 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade, at Krung Thep, was struck by 24 X B-24J Liberator and 22 X Mosquito FB.VI. Unluckily for them there were 22 X Zeke prowling about and 5 X Liberators and 4 X Mosquito were destroyed. They managed to down 2 Zekes and damage 2 others while dishing out moderately heavy losses to the ground unit. Then 146th IJA Base Force was attacked by 7 X B-24J (4 damaged), 36 X B-25J ( 9 damaged) and 9 X Mosquito FB.VI (3 destroyed, 2 damaged), but 20 Zekes engaged them. 2 Zekes were killed and 3 others were shot up and the unit had very heavy losses. Japanese artillery expended ordinance and failed to do any damage.

The 56th Chinese Corps got the attention of 8 X Helen and had extremely light losses as a result.

The Allied ships unloading at Tori Shima were attacked by 10 X Irving (8 trashed), 15 X Judy (2 destroyed, 3 damaged), 37 X Jill (6 shot down, 14 damaged), 13 X Frances (2 downed, 2 damaged), 6 X Lilly, 18 X Zeke (12 downed), 8 X Jack (4 destroyed) and 32 X Tony (22 shot down). The Allied LRCAP of 9 Hellcats and 22 Lightnings paid with 1 of the former being damaged and 10 of the later being shot down with 2 others taking damage. The following mayhem was heaped on the Allied ships.
LST-169 1 bomb hit, on fire
AK Felix Hathaway 1 bomb hit, 1 torpedo hit, on fire, heavy damage
LST-126 1 bomb hit, on fire
AK George H. Himes 1 torpedo hit, on fire
AK Harriet Monroe 1 torpedo hit, on fire

The SS Plunger, 72 miles NW of Dili, hit a lone AP with 2 torpedoes, sinking it.

A Japanese artillery strike 83 miles W of Wuhan caused very light Chinese losses.

The attacks on Allied shipping around Iwo Jima, Bonin and Tori Shima was expected. Allied commanders were surprised that the response took so long to come and that when it did the lack of strength was an eye opener. Caution is still the word in that area though.

The DD Worden has extinguished the fires, but the flooding is still at a moderate level. The good news is that her pumps are working and her damage control parties are confident of safe arrival at a port to complete repairs. There is doubt that they will even need a repair yard to make everything shipshape once more.

Sam has heard rumors that the Japanese are attacking the Allied ships. He feels sorry for the guys that go into the water as their ordeal is just beginning. “At least if we get hit we're already on land. Those poor guys get hit and they have to struggle to get into the water and then they need to get to land. Nope I prefer the infantry, filth and all,” he says to the guys as they return from another patrol.

With nothing to fly the Lucky 11 just hang around waiting. Gil writes a letter to Elaine, some sleep, others gamble and a couple go for a hike. Gil tells them to wait for him and off they go. There is nothing of interest to see and they finally call a halt to the expedition and head back to get some chow.

Gunny and Slim along with the rest of the platoon continue to train landing from the APDs. Both men feel that whatever is in store for them should get done now. “Are they going to keep doing exercises until the war is over?” Slim asks Gunny as they head back to their area.

Hitler allowed Kesselring to vacate Rome.

The following is the text of FDR's fireside chat on this day.

My Friends:
Yesterday, on June fourth, 1944, Rome fell to American and Allied troops. The first of the Axis capitals is now in our hands. One up and two to go!
It is perhaps significant that the first of these capitals to fall should have the longest history of all of them. The story of Rome goes back to the time of the foundations of our civilization. We can still see there monuments of the time when Rome and the Romans controlled the whole of the then known world. That, too, is significant, for the United Nations are determined that in the future no one city and no one race will be able to control the whole of the world.
In addition to the monuments of the older times, we also see in Rome the great symbol of Christianity, which has reached into almost every part of the world. There are other shrines and other churches in many places, but the churches and shrines of Rome are visible symbols of the faith and determination of the early saints and martyrs that Christianity should live and become universal. And tonight (now) it will be a source of deep satisfaction that the freedom of the Pope and the (of) Vatican City is assured by the armies of the United Nations. It is also significant that Rome has been liberated by the armed forces of many nations. The American and British armies -- who bore the chief burdens of battle -- found at their sides our own North American neighbors, the gallant Canadians. The fighting New Zealanders from the far South Pacific, the courageous French and the French Moroccans, the South Africans, the Poles and the East Indians -- all of them fought with us on the bloody approaches to the city of Rome.
The Italians, too, forswearing a partnership in the Axis which they never desired, have sent their troops to join us in our battles against the German trespassers on their soil.
The prospect of the liberation of Rome meant enough to Hitler and his generals to induce them to fight desperately at great cost of men and materials and with great sacrifice to their crumbling Eastern line and to their Western front. No thanks are due to them if Rome was spared the devastation which the Germans wreaked on Naples and other Italian cities. The Allied Generals maneuvered so skillfully that the Nazis could only have stayed long enough to damage Rome at the risk of losing their armies.
But Rome is of course more than a military objective.
Ever since before the days of the Caesars, Rome has stood as a symbol of authority. Rome was the Republic. Rome was the Empire. Rome was and is in a sense the Catholic Church, and Rome was the capital of a United Italy. Later, unfortunately, a quarter of a century ago, Rome became the seat of Fascism -- one of the three capitals of the Axis.
For this (a) quarter century the Italian people were enslaved. They were (and) degraded by the rule of Mussolini from Rome. They will mark its liberation with deep emotion. In the north of Italy, the people are still dominated and threatened by the Nazi overlords and their Fascist puppets. Somehow,in the back of my head, I still remember a name -- Mussolini.
Our victory comes at an excellent time, while our Allied forces are poised for another strike at western Europe -- and while the armies of other Nazi soldiers nervously await our assault. And in the meantime our gallant Russian Allies continue to make their power felt more and more.
From a strictly military standpoint, we had long ago accomplished certain of the main objectives of our Italian campaign -- the control of the islands -- the major islands -- the control of the sea lanes of the Mediterranean to shorten our combat and supply lines, and the capture of the airports, such as the great airports of Foggia, south of Rome, from which we have struck telling blows on the continent -- the whole of the continent all the way up to the Russian front.
It would be unwise to inflate in our own minds the military importance of the capture of Rome. We shall have to push through a long period of greater effort and fiercer fighting before we get into Germany itself. The Germans have retreated thousands of miles, all the way from the gates of Cairo, through Libya and Tunisia and Sicily and Southern Italy. They have suffered heavy losses, but not great enough yet to cause collapse.
Germany has not yet been driven to surrender. Germany has not yet been driven to the point where she will be unable to recommence world conquest a generation hence.
Therefore, the victory still lies some distance ahead. That distance will be covered in due time -- have no fear of that. But it will be tough and it will be costly, as I have told you many, many times.
In Italy the people had lived so long under the corrupt rule of Mussolini that, in spite of the tinsel at the top -- you have seen the pictures of him -- their economic condition had grown steadily worse. Our troops have found starvation, malnutrition, disease, a deteriorating education and lowered public health -- all by-products of the Fascist misrule.
The task of the Allies in occupation has been stupendous. We have had to start at the very bottom, assisting local governments to reform on democratic lines. We have had to give them bread to replace that which was stolen out of their mouths by the Germans. We have had to make it possible for the Italians to raise and use their own local crops. We have to help them cleanse their schools of Fascist trappings.
I think the American people as a whole approve the salvage of these human beings, who are only now learning to walk in a new atmosphere of freedom.
Some of us may let our thoughts run to the financial cost of it. Essentially it is what we can call a form of relief. And at the same time, we hope that this relief will be an investment for the future -- an investment that will pay dividends by eliminating Fascism, by (and) ending any Italian desires to start another war of aggression in the future. And that means that they are dividends which justify such an investment, because they are additional supports for world peace.
The Italian people are capable of self-government. We do not lose sight of their virtues as a peace-loving nation.
We remember the many centuries in which the Italians were leaders in the arts and sciences, enriching the lives of all mankind.
We remember the great sons of the Italian people -- Galileo and Marconi, Michelangelo and Dante -- and incidentally that fearless discoverer who typifies the courage of Italy -- Christopher Columbus.
Italy cannot grow in stature by seeking to build up a great militaristic empire. Italians have been overcrowded within their own territories, but they do not need to try to conquer the lands of other peoples in order to find the breath of life. Other peoples may not want to be conquered.
In the past, Italians have come by the millions into (to) the United States. They have been welcomed, they have prospered, they have become good citizens, community and governmental leaders. They are not Italian-Americans. They are Americans -- Americans of Italian descent.
The Italians have gone in great numbers to the other Americas -- Brazil and the Argentine, for example -- hundreds and hundreds of thousands of them. They have gone (and) to many other nations in every continent of the world, giving of their industry and their talents, and achieving success and the comfort of good living, and good citizenship.
Italy should go on as a great mother nation, contributing to the culture and the progress and the goodwill of all mankind -- (and) developing her special talents in the arts and crafts and sciences, and preserving her historic and cultural heritage for the benefit of all peoples.
We want and expect the help of the future Italy toward lasting peace. All the other nations opposed to Fascism and Nazism ought to (should) help to give Italy a chance.
The Germans, after years of domination in Rome, left the people in the Eternal City on the verge of starvation. We and the British will do and are doing everything we can to bring them relief. Anticipating the fall of Rome, we made preparations to ship food supplies to the city, but, of course, it should be borne in mind that the needs are so great, (and) the transportation requirements of our armies so heavy that improvement must be gradual. But we have already begun to save the lives of the men, women and children of Rome.
This, I think, is an example of the efficiency of your machinery of war. The magnificent ability and energy of the American people in growing the crops, building the merchant ships, in making and collecting the cargoes, in getting the supplies over thousands of miles of water, and thinking ahead to meet emergencies -- all this spells, I think, an amazing efficiency on the part of our armed forces, all the various agencies working with them, and American industry and labor as a whole.
No great effort like this can be a hundred percent perfect, but the batting average is very, very high.
And so I extend the congratulations and thanks tonight of the American people to General Alexander, who has been in command of the whole Italian operation; to our General Clark and General Leese of the Fifth and the Eighth Armies; to General Wilson, the Supreme Allied commander of the Mediterranean theater, to (and) General Devers his American Deputy; to (Lieutenant) General Eaker; to Admirals Cunningham and Hewitt; and to all their brave officers and men.
May God bless them and watch over them and over all of our gallant, fighting men.

Sandy got a few letters this afternoon and she promised herself that she wouldn't read them all at once, but did anyway. Bill tells her that he spends lots of time in places that he can't send out any mail, that he misses her, he asks about Dave and other things. She realizes that he must be longing for time in the States away from the war. “At least he's OK,” she tells herself.

Sylvia went to the Hospital today and a clerk at the hotel took a telephone call telling Pete to hurry over to there. Needless to say he's off like a shot, leaving instructions for the clerk to tell Milt and Jac to join him there.

Nanning underwent a sweep by 37 X Zeke, 15 X George, a Tojo and 2 X Tony. They were provided with a warm greeting by 29 X P-38J. 5 of the big twin boomed fighters were lost and another was damaged but the Japanese took it on the chin. They lost 12 Zekes, a George, a Tojo and a Tony.

Kwajalein was struck by 40 X TBM and 7 X FM-2. Flak knocked down an Avenger and damaged 3 others while they caused light damage to the airfield, a secondary explosion and very light personnel losses.

Pete looks worn out and Milt teases him saying that Sylvia looks better than him and she gave birth. Jac tells Milt to stop and the three of them go to the room to visit with the new mother and the baby girl. Upon arriving at the room they are talking about names and Sylvia tells them, “Pete and I decided that if we had a girl the name would be Pearl. For 2 reasons we picked that name. One, she's a jewel to us and two because of the attack on Pearl Harbor that ultimately brought us together.” Milt and Jac nod in agreement and the doting over the newborn gets into full swing.

Sam hates it that every day he has a front row seat to view Japanese recon flights. The Marine Corsairs show up sometimes, but as far as Sam can figure they never do more than drive off the snooper. Replacements have been promised, but who knows when the 25th Division will, if ever, get back to full strength. Sam knows that if the Japanese really wanted to retake the island it would be a dicey affair, at best. He tends to his weapons and then relaxes, having a smoke.

Gene had a tiring day again and on the way home he stopped at a bar near the yard for a beer. While he was having it some men from one of the ships being worked on approach him. They buy him a beer after learning that he's a welder in the yard. Then they ask him all sorts of questions to which Gene tells them he can't answer because of security. The men stop asking and say that they understand and say goodbye. A short time later a man approaches him and asks about the men who he was talking to. Gene asks why and the man shows him ID that indicates the the man is with the FBI. Gene tells him that they asked him some questions about the yard, the work being done, “And stuff like that. When I told them that I couldn't talk about it because of security they said that they understood and then they left.” The man tells him that he did the right thing and thanks him. After taking his name the agent left and Gene ordered another beer and then headed home.

A PB4Y spotted a merchantman in Tokyo Bay. The report claimed that the vessel was hit by a bomb.

The SS Picuda, 20 miles SE of Davao, stumbled across a lone AK and hit her target with a torpedo. Troops were observed going overboard.

Tavoy was bombed by 42 X B-29 and 14 X Thunderbolt II. The port had light damage, a secondary explosion was seen and troop losses were moderately heavy. Allied artillery inflicted moderately heavy losses on the Japanese troops.

Dili had it's port lightly damaged by 48 X B-24J. There were a few secondary explosions reported.

Lautem was raided by 140 X B-25J and 24 X Kittyhawk III. Flak accounted for 2 of the Mitchells and damaged 25 others. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were a great number of secondary explosions and casualties were heavy.

Kwajalein's airfield had light damage and there were very light losses to the personnel due to an attack made by 20 X PB4Y. AA fire knocked 1 of the bombers down and damaged 3 more.

Buna was hit by 41 X B-24J, 5 of which took damage from the ground fire. The port was lightly damaged, there were many secondary explosions and the troops took heavy losses.

Tulagi's quiet day was shattered when 40 X B-24J arrived and caused light damage to the port. There were a few secondary explosions and a bomber was damaged.

Krung Thep was under a CAP of 25 X Zeke and 6 X George when 46 X Thunderbolt II and 32 X P-38J arrived to do their deadly work. All of the Japanese planes were destroyed and a Thunderbolt was damaged. The Japanese artillery shelled the Allied troops off and on all day, causing very light casualties.

Palau was raided by 13 X SB2C, 19 X P-39D (1 destroyed, 1 damaged), 30 X P-38G (1 damaged), 22 X P-47D (1 downed, 2 damaged) and 14 X F4U-1D. The airfield took light damage and the personnel had moderate losses.

Pete would like to spend more time at the hospital, but the demands of the hotel and pub keep him very busy. Of course Milt volunteered to man the pub for him, but that's a recipe for no profits. Sylvia and Pearl are doing fine and they will come home tomorrow. Normally a midwife would've handled the delivery, but since Sylvia was a nurse at the hospital the staff insisted that she give birth there. “Taking care of one of our own, you see,” said the administrator.

Gene is telling his story of last night's goings on while they eat their lunches. His uncle tells him that he did the right thing and if he ever has something like that happen again he should call the agent who gave him the card, immediately.

Slim is bored out of his mind and tells Gunny that the “Whole damned division is going to lose it's edge if all we do is laze around and have ineptly run exercises.” Gunny doesn't openly agree, but he knows that what Slim is saying is true. He decides to take matters into his own hands and try to take the matter up the chain of command. It'll be slow as he's got to start with the platoon's LT.

St. Mere-Eglise was liberated.

The Americans are now 50 miles NW of Rome.

The Russians attacked the Finns N of Lenningrad.

The RAF flew from French fields for the first time since 1940.

Combat

The SS Pompano, 83 miles NW of Dili, tried and failed to attack an AP that was all alone.

Bangkok was swept by 27 X P-38J and they were met by 35 X Zeke and 31 X George. 9 Zekes were shot down and 5 Georges were destroyed, 2 damaged while 3 Lightnings went down and 3 others took damage. Then 124 X B-29 appeared and 26 Zekes and 20 Georges attacked them. 3 Zekes were killed (13 damaged) and 3 Georges went down (9 damaged). Between the fighters and the flak 9 of the big silver birds were shot down and 32 others were damaged. The port was moderately damaged, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were heavy.

Krung Thep was swept by 47 X Thunderbolt II and they found 29 X Zeke in the air. Before the Japanese pilots knew what hit them they were falling like leaves from the sky on a Fall day. 20 Zekes went down in the lopsided action. Japanese artillery accounted for light Allied losses. An Allied attack breached the Japanese defensive positions, driving them back. Both sides had extremely heavy losses.

Palau was bombed by 9 X B-24J and the AA fire damaged 5 of them. The airfield took light damage, a secondary explosion was observed and there were extremely light troop losses.

Port Moresby was attacked by 39 X B-24D and the airfield was moderately damaged while a Liberator was pierced by a flak burst, scaring the crew.

At Tavoy Allied artillery caused light Japanese casualties.

Sam sits on a discarded ammo box and watches another Japanese plane observing the island. He wonders why the fighters protecting them don't kill the bums. He's bored and nervous because he expects the Japanese to attack the island at any time. He doesn't know that the USN is maintaining a strong force in the area and that planes ranging out from Iwo and Bonin are also covering Tori Shima. Supplies continue to be landed and See Bees are busily working on an airstrip. Sam would've sworn that the small island wasn't suitable for an airfield, but one is growing before his eyes. He wishes that defensive positions were being built, but for now his hole will have to do.

Gene is stopped on the way home by a couple of men who identify themselves as FBI agents. They go to a waiting car and get in. “Gene, what we want to talk to you about is what happened the other night. We suspect that the men who approached you were spies. What we want you to do is stop at the bar on the way home from work 3 or 4 times a week. Have a beer relax and we'll see if they return. If they do we want you to play along, but don't give them any real information. We have some things on this list that you can tell them Agents will be watching you from now on so you don't have to worry. If this is OK with you it would be a great service to your country. If you don't want to do this we'll understand. Take some time to think it over and we'll contact you tomorrow.” Before the man can say anything else Gene tells them that he'll help any way he can. “Good,” the agent says, “You can't discuss this with anybody. Not friends, family, nobody. Understood?” Gene nods and takes the list from the man. They let him out of the car and depart. Gene's head is swimming. I'm a welder in the yard and now I'm involved with spies. He heads home carefully hiding the list so nobody sees it.

Sylvia and Pearl are driven from the hospital to the hotel by one of Mr. Doe's agents and after she gathers what she needs the man takes her to her parent's home. Pete is very busy between the hotel, the pub and the books so he promised that he would visit tomorrow morning. “I want to see my two girls as much as I can so regain your strength and come home as soon as you can.”

Sandy was handed 5 letters by Dave's pal, who stopped by for a chat. The two men talk about the war so Sandy retires to her room after making them some coffee. The letters contain the usual, but she doesn't care as long as she hears from him. These letters tell her that he's alive and OK as of when he wrote them.

Ed's Old Gals delivered a naval bombardment to Palau and the Japanese responded by hitting the following ships:
CL Columbia 11 shell hits
CA Portland14 shell hits
BB Arizona 3 shell hits
BB Oklahoma 2 shell hits
BB Nevada 3 shell hits
BB West Virginia 2 shell hits
All of the ships had chipped paint as the guns aren't of a large enough size to do anything more than superficial damage. The USN caused a few secondary explosions and very heavy troop losses. Then the defenders were hit by 13 X SB2C (1 damaged), 20 X P-39D (3 damaged), and 24 X P-47D and the airstrip had light damage.

Tavoy was bombed by 25 X B-29 and 15 X Thunderbolt II. The port took moderate damage, a secondary explosion was reported and personnel losses were heavy. Allied artillery dished out moderate troop losses for the Japanese.

Bangkok was swept by 37 X P-38J and they were engaged by 66 X Zeke and 25 X George. In the wild fight 13 Lightnings were shot down and 3 others took damage while 27 Zekes were flamed (1 damaged) and 9 Georges were killed (3 damaged). Later 93 X B-29 roared in and 39 Zekes, 11 Georges and the AA downed 10 and damaged 26 more. A Zeke was destroyed (15 damaged) and 2 Georges also took some damage. The port was lightly hit and there were some secondary explosions.

Krung Thep was swept by 31 X P-38J, but there were no Japanese planes in the area. The IJA Imperial Guards Division was attacked by 44 X Liberator VI (1 damaged), 34 X Mosquito FB.VI, 31 X B-25J (4 damaged), 9 X B-24J and 11 X Thunderbolt II. The unit sustained very heavy casualties. The IJA 50th Division, nearby, was struck by 30 X Liberator VI, 2 X Mosquito FB.VI, 7 X B-25J (1 damaged), 6 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 12 X Thunderbolt II and it had heavy losses. Later the 127th IJNAF Base Force was hammered by 31 X Liberator VI (1 damaged), 10 X Mosquito FB.VI, 6 X B-25J and 3 X Thunderbolt II for heavy casualties. The 3rd Indian Division was hit by 15 X Frances (3 damaged) for moderately heavy losses. The Japanese opened with an artillery bombardment that the Allied forces responded to resulting in no Allied losses, but the Japanese suffered very heavily.

Dili was raided by 40 X B-24D and there were a couple of secondary explosions seen.

Moscow has informed Tokyo that the 2 units that have moved into the countryside in Manchukuo are on exercises and will not move anywhere else. They are composed of a Rifle Brigade and the other a Cav Division, not strong enough to pose an offensive threat. Stalin, with a menacing smile says, “Of course we will move in heavier units. What will the Japanese do, go to war over it?” He then turns his attention to the war raging in Europe.

5th New Chinese Corps, still mired in place and starving was attacked by 9 Helens who caused light losses.

A Jill took recon photos of 25th USA Division and Sam just stares at the plane wondering where the fighters are. With nothing to do and plenty of time to do it company Cos are being tasked with keeping their men occupied. Word filters down to the platoon that every morning before chow they will train, exercise and spend time on a newly constructed firing range. Sam sighs and resigns himself to it.

Mother and baby are doing fine and Pete is looking worse for wear as he's trying to pick up Sylvia's tasks at the hotel. When he visits her she suggests that he promote one of the staff, that she names, to a managerial position and give her a salary increase too. Pete readily agrees and says that he'll speak to the woman upon his return to the hotel.

Sitting in the radio shack, Red is listening to Benny Goodman's One O'Clock Jump when Cookie walks in and joins him. Lucky is trailing along with a bone hanging out of his mouth. The dog lies down and proceeds to gnaw at the bone. Every time he shifts it it creates a large thumping sound on the deck. Red and Cookie, laugh and decide that the music doesn't stand a chance so they stroll the dock, having a smoke.

Slim and Gunny are glad that today's exercise was scrubbed due to the APD having some work done to her. They are itching for something to break up the boredom, but nothing seems to be on the horizon. “Maybe they just wanted the 2nd here to repel a Japanese attack,” says Slim.

Tavoy was bombed by 34 X B-29 and 12 X Spitfire VIII were along as escorts. The port was lightly damaged, there were a few secondary explosions and personnel casualties were moderate.

Bangkok was swept by 32 X Thunderbolt II and 33 X P-38J. The Japanese, not willing to give up air superiority without a fight threw 55 X Zeke, 29 X George and 11 X Jack at the intruders. It was a bloody day as 6 Thunderbolts were shot down(1 damaged) and 2 Lightnings were killed (2 damaged), but it was lopsided victory as the Japanese lost 43 X Zeke, 20 X George and 6 X Jack for their efforts.

Dili was raided by 34 X B-24D and there were some secondary explosions and very light troop losses.

Lautem was paid a visit by 127 X B-25J and 24 X Kittyhawk III. The airfield was subjected to heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were moderate.

Buna was hit by 36 X B-17E and the AA fire damaged 2 of them. The port had light damage.

The IJA 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade, in the Krung Thep area, was pounced on by 69 X Liberator VI (2 damaged), 20 X B-24J (1 damaged), 41 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 downed, 1 damaged), 43 X B-25J (3 damaged) and 36 X Thunderbolt II who had to fight their way through 14 X Zeke. 9 of the Zekes were flamed for their troubles and the unit took very heavy losses. The 127th IJNAF Base Force was next up and 5 X Zeke tried to fend off 36 X Liberator VI (4 damaged), 15 X B-24J, 6 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), 8 X B-25J Mitchell and 18 X Thunderbolt II. The Thunderbolts made quick work of the Zekes as they were all shot down. The Japanese had very heavy casualties. Not willing to go down meekly the Japanese threw 20 X Frances at the 18th UK Division and inflicted moderate losses on the unit. An ineffectual Japanese artillery bombardment interrupted the afternoon.

Tavoy witnessed another Allied artillery bombardment of the Japanese positions and losses were thought to have been light.

“That's interesting,” says Dave as he reads the newspaper. “It says here that LT R Little is of the AVG is still the top Allied ace in the Pacific with 25 kills. What's strange is that he was KIA a while ago. 2 pilots of VF-2 on the CV Lexington, LT W Dean and ENS B Johnson, are tied for second place with 24 kills each. The Navy has been busy.”

Tokyo's response to the Red Army moving troops into the countryside of Manchukuo for “exercises” was less than positive. It fell just short of demanding that these formations return to their bases. Moscow's response is that the units need to rest before moving. “See, I told you that those rats in Tokyo would do nothing about our troops moving into the countryside,” Stalin hisses with a grin.

The Lucky 11 have a brand spanking new B-29 as of today. They will have a few training flights with her before the big bomber is declared ready for a flight overseas. The men are thrilled to have this big bird and can't wait to put her through her paces. Gill shares in the excitement, but her harbors fear about what comes next when they're in combat. The men know that the 8th Air Force has been suffering very heavy losses against the Germans. Of course there is always the possibility that they won't be going to Europe.

The generals and admirals discuss the plans for the immediate future of Pacific operations as FDR listens. “The key is to disrupt the supply lines from the SRA. To do this Morotai should be taken, followed by Davao. Next the PIs are up. Once this is accomplished we rush in air assets and set up bases for our subs. An eye can also be cast towards Hong Kong or some other point on the Chinese coast to tighten the noose, though it won't be critical. Once we hold Manila our planes can reduce Formosa, if we choose, and our fleet can range where it chooses. An added plum would be if the IJN sortied so we could polish it off as a viable fighting force. Of course the bombing of Japan will be a focus and if possible the route through the Russian bases should be kept on the back burner.” The man finishes and takes his seat at the back of the room. There is little discussion and FDR thanks everyone for their contributions. All leave then save General Marshall and Admiral King, who FDR talks to about his concerns.

Operation Hay Action was launched by the Germans. They will kidnap 40,000 Polish children aged 10-14 for slave labor in Germany.

Nanning was swept by 39 X P-38J and there were 20 X Zeke, 18 X George and a Tony on hand to provide the entertainment. A Lightning was damaged in the melee while 11 Zekes, 8 Georges and the Tony were shot down.

Tavoy had moderately light losses from 32 X B-29 and 12 X Spitfire VIII disrupting their calm morning. An Allied bombardment attack resulted in extremely light Japanese troop losses.

Bangkok underwent a fighter sweep consisting of 30 X Thunderbolt II and 25 X P-38J. 28 X Zeke, 39 X George and 13 X Jack contested the skies losing 18 Zekes, 21 Georges and 3 Jacks. 5 Thunderbolts went down, another damaged and 2 Lightnings were destroyed.

Palau was raided by 36 X B-24J and the port took moderate damage, there were many secondary explosions and personnel losses were very light. Another strike roared in made up of 12 X SB2C (2 damaged), 18 X P-39D (1 damaged) and 24 X P-47D. They added light damage to the airfield and light casualties.

The IJA Imperial Guards Division at Krung Thep, was jumped by 92 X Liberator VI (3 damaged), 31 X B-24J, 41 X B-25J, 44 X Mosquito FB.VI and 65 X Thunderbolt II. When the bombs stopped raining down and the dust settled the Japanese had sustained very heavy losses. The Japanese artillery caused light Allied casualties. An Allied assault gained a little ground at the cost of extremely heavy losses to both sides.

The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was attacked by 6 X Helen, who did no damaged to the already ravaged remnants of the unit.

Stick has the day off and he spends it relaxing after a large breakfast of powdered eggs, powdered milk and stale bread. If this is how we eat I wonder what the infantry gets on the line, he wonders. Maybe it's true that the Navy gets the best food, but I'd be scared to death in a storm, he thinks. He then nods off for a long nap.

Gil is rapidly customizing he radio position. He has hung a picture of Elaine over the tiny desk that he sits at. The plane seems to work just fine and after another couple of flights they will be leaving Mather Field for parts unknown. Today he conned Ham into letting him fly in the nose for a while and the view was breathtaking, though in combat plexiglass won't be offering much in the way of protection.

Sandy got a few more letters today and she sat outside reading them. She longs for Bill to return and prays that he isn't hurt.

The first V1 was launched today.

A single Tiger tank, Michael Wittmann commanding, destroyed 25 Soviet tanks and other vehicles.

A strike of 8 X SB2C (3 damaged), 21 X P-39D (2 damaged) and 24 X P-47D added very light damage to the airstrip, a solitary secondary explosion and extremely light casualties.

A fighter sweep of Nanning by 39 X P-38J was engaged by 17 X Zeke, 15 X George and a Tony. 8 Zekes, 3 Georges and the Tony were destroyed at the cost of 6 Lightnings downed and 6 more shot up.

Ichang was raided by 60 X B-25J and 42 X P-40N escorting them. 20 X Jack, 7 X Nick and 23 X Tony met them and it was a bloody day for both sides. 3 Jacks were shot down (5 damaged), a Nick was destroyed (3 damaged) and 7 Tonys were killed (4 damaged). 5 X B-25J were downed and 11 more took damage while the Warhawks lost 23 planes. The airfield had light damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were light.

Bangkok was swept by 39 X Thunderbolt II and 22 X P-38J. They jumped the Japanese CAP, which was made up of 27 X Zeke, 33 X George and 18 X Jack. By the time the Allied fighters departed they had lost a Thunderbolt (another damaged) and a Lightning (1 damaged). They had killed 21 Zekes, 24 Georges and 2 Jacks.

Krung Thep was swept by 28 X P-38J and 22 X Zeke gave battle. 13 Zekes were destroyed for a lost P-38J and another damaged. Then 90 X B-29 arrived and they fought their way through 9 Zekes at the cost of 4 damaged bombers. A Zeke was damaged as the airfield took moderate damage, there were many reported secondary explosions and troop losses were light. The 18th UK Division was attacked by 3 X Frances and 2 were damaged as the British unit had very light casualties. The 3rd Indian Division was targeted by 9 X Helen and once more the Japanese only managed to cause very light losses.
Japanese aircraft. Then 21 X P-38J appeared and attacked 7 X Jack, downing 3 of them. The Japanese artillery did no harm and an Allied assault caused extremely heavy losses for both sides.

Kai Island was hit by 71 X P-38J and 2 X Kittyhawk III for light damage to the airfield, a single secondary explosion and moderately light casualties.

Dili's port had light damage, many secondary explosions and very light losses to the personnel when 36 X B-24J came calling.

Buna was bombed by 42 X B-24J and the airfield was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions and heavy casualties. 2 of the bombers were damaged by the AA fire.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was pounced on by 6 Helens and the Chinese had light losses.

Tavoy's defenses were tested and the attack was repulsed with both sides sustaining extremely heavy casualties.

Another test flight went off smoothly and Gil is anticipating an imminent departure for more dangerous places than California. He writes another letter to Elaine telling her that he misses her and that he hopes that she'll be there when he returns.

Sam hates this garrison duty. He tries to tell himself that it's better than attacking the Japanese in their fortified positions. He figures that some green outfit will be replacing the 25th once the division is back up to strength. Earlier in the day he wandered over to the airstrip that the See Bees continue to expand and listened to some music that they had on the radio. He asks them about fortifying the island and they told him that the airstrip is the priority.

Pete is overjoyed that Sylvia came home today with Pearl. She promises that she'll take it easy, but insists that she'll do the books. “That is I'll do them and order the things that we need in between Pearl's feedings and diaper changes. We'll be keeping the laundry pretty busy.” Pete is just happy to have his girls home so he readily agrees to everything that she says. Milt and Jac stop by that evening and after visiting with Pearl Milt heads into the pub for a nip.

Gene trudges home, tired and dirty. He had a few beers at the bar, but nobody spoke to him other than another one of the workers from the yard that he knows.

Once more Bangkok was swept and the Japanese had 22 X Zeke, 25 X George and 9 X Jack aloft. 28 X Thunderbolt II and 21 X P-38J screamed down on the Japanese who started to immediately tumble from the sky. As quickly as the one sided fight had begun, it was over and the Allied aircraft headed for home with a limping Thunderbolt and minus a destroyed Lightning. The Japanese lost 17 Zekes, 7 Georges and a Jack today.

27 P-38Js arrived over Krung Thep only to discover that the Japanese had no planes around. Later 18 X P-38J arrived and they found 7 X Zeke, 13 X George and 9 X Jack. The battle was joined and once more the Allied pilots and planes proved to much for the Japanese as 2 Zekes, 7 Georges and a Jack went down and a Lightning took some damage. Japanese artillery made lots of noise, but did no damage.

Buna was bombed by 48 X B-24D and it's airfield had very light damage, a couple of secondary explosions and moderate casualties.

Lunga's port was the target for 47 X B-24J. They did moderate damage, caused some secondary explosions and inflicted light losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had light losses from 9 Helens.

Palau was hit by 9 X SB2C (1 damaged), 20 X P-39D (1 damaged) and 21 X P-47D. The airfield took light damage and there were very light personnel casualties.

The SS Grouper, 71 miles SW of Nagasaki, spotted an AK steaming all alone. The sub proceeded to make a surface attack and hit her target with the deck gun 4 times and 3 fish also found the mark. The ship went down quickly.

Allied artillery at Tavoy inflicted extremely light Japanese casualties.

Pete is pooped by the end of a work day, but feeling better with Sylvia at home. Pearl wakes a few times a night to feed and Sylvia is pretty tired as a result. Pete wishes he could help, but she insists that he needs what little sleep he can get just to make it through the next day. He thinks back in time to when sleep was almost impossible and knows that this is nothing in comparison. Milt has actually been a big help in the pub and he confided that Jac threatened him with unmentionable consequences if he went there just for drinks. Pete smiled when he heard this and offered Milt a beer, which he gracefully accepted.

Gene stops in the bar for a quick beer and sees one of the men who are in question. He nods to the man when he was being looked at. Then after finishing his beer Gene left the bar and headed home. Nobody approached or followed him.

Slim and Gunny participated with the platoon in another exercise today. One of the men in the company suffered a broken arm when he slipped getting off of the APD. The men wonder why all of this is going on in the first place. “We always travel on transports or landing craft, never these APDs. I wonder what's up,” one of the guys asks nobody in particular. All he got we shrugs in answer.

“As good as the P-38s have been this new fighter promises to outshine it. If the base at Tori Shima is made big enough we could actually try to sweep Japan with them,” the major says. FDR listens and then asks if he's talking about the much anticipated P-51D. The answer was a yes and FDR turns to Frank Knox and asks if the Navy will be able to supply the Army Air Corps with such a base. Frank says that the task is difficult and that Tori Shima will never be big enough, no matter what, to enable the number of planes needed for the job that the Army wants.

FDR outlined his plans for the postwar United Nations.

Combat

A Judy attacked the SS Swordfish 11 miles NW of San Jose and the sub reported that it suffered a hit. She will make for Ulithi with moderate flooding and systems damage.

The SS Lancetfish, 18 miles NE of Okinawa, attacked an unescorted AP. After 3 shell hits and 4 fish the troops on her were pouring into the water as fast as they could while the ship was sinking.

Ichang was swept by 31 X P-38J and the Japanese threw 24 X Jack, 5 X Nick and 22 X Tony at them. 7 Jacks were shot down (1 damaged), 2 Nicks were flamed (1 damaged) and 7 Tonys were sent tumbling from the sky. 3 Lightnings went down and another took some damage.

Tavoy was bombed by 47 X B-29, 98 X Liberator VI (3 damaged), 47 X B-24J, 18 X Thunderbolt II and 7 X Spitfire VIII who did extremely heavy damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, a great many secondary explosions were reported and there were very heavy personnel losses. Allied artillery dished out light losses to the Japanese today.

Bangkok was swept by 42 X Thunderbolt II and 27 X P-38J Lightning. The Allied fighters dove out of the sun and knifed through the gaggle of Japanese planes. Of the 45 X Zeke, 26 X George and 21 X Jack that started the fight 5 Zekes, 10 Georges and 19 Jacks lived to tell about it.

Krung Thep was raided by 57 X B-25J, 48 X Mosquito FB.VI and 54 X Thunderbolt II who dished out heavy damage to the airfield, there were many secondary explosions and troop casualties were very heavy. The 18th UK Division had light losses at the hands of 3 X Frances. Then 6 X Helen added moderate casualties a short time later. Japanese artillery once again ineptly expended ammo for no results.

Koepang was paid a visit by 40 X B-24D and 6 were damaged by the AA fire as they did moderately light damage to the port, saw many secondary explosions and caused moderate casualties.

Lautem was attacked by 142 X B-25J (1 damaged), 56 X P-38J, 15 X P-40N and 18 X Kittyhawk III. The airfield took moderate damage, the port was lightly hit, there were some secondary explosions and troop losses were heavy.

Palau was bombed by 40 X B-24J, 1 of which was damaged by flak. They did moderately heavy damage to the port, caused many secondary explosions and inflicted light losses on the personnel there. An hour later 8 X SB2C, 21 X P-39D (1 damaged) and 22 X P-47D Thunderbolt did light damage to the airfield and inflicted light casualties on the troops.

Lunga was raided by 42 X B-24J and the port took moderate damage, there were many secondary explosions and the troops had moderate losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was pounced on by 6 Helens and had light losses.

Ed's Old Gals sailed from Ulithi to unload on Palau as the island's defenses are getting an ever increasing dosage of bombs and shells in preparation of an invasion. Ed sits in his seat on the bridge of the Colorado and wonders if the IJN will make an appearance. He suspects that it's more likely to happen around the Bonin chain, but being ready never hurt anyone. A steward dumps garbage off of the fantail and watches what he thinks are sharks feed on it. A chill runs through him as he thinks of being in the water with them.

The Lucky 11 have been put on standby for orders and that, of course, triggers speculation among the crew as to when and where. Gil doesn't care as he feels that no matter where they end up it'll be dangerous.

Pete whistles happily as he goes about work. He's never been happier in all of his life and he owes it all to the Japanese. “It's a funny world we live in,” he says to one of the hotel's staff. The person just looks at him, wondering what Pete meant.

95 V1s were launched before 6AM today and a total of 244 reached England before the day was done.

Ed's Old Gals arrived and unloaded a naval bombardment of Palau and the Japanese returned fire hitting the BB Oklahoma 5 times. The airfield had light damage, the port moderate, there were many secondary explosions and personnel casualties were very heavy. 26 X B-24J added moderately light damage to the port, caused some secondary explosions and very light casualties. Then 9 X SB2C (1 damaged), 21 X P-39D (1 damaged) and 20 X P-47D arrived and the hit the airstrip for light damage, a secondary explosion and light personnel losses. The Old Gals retire towards Ulithi after depleting their ammunition.

Ichang underwent a fighter sweep by 28 X P-38J and 17 X Jack, 6 X Nick and 19 X Tony rose to the occasion. 6 Lightnings were shot down and another was damaged while the Japanese lost 2 Jacks, 3 Nicks and 7 Tonys.

Tavoy was attacked by 123 X Liberator VI (4 damaged), 46 X B-24J, 48 X B-29, 16 X Thunderbolt II, 12 X Spitfire VIII and 11 X Corsair IV. The airfield was extremely heavily damaged, the port had light damage, there were numerous secondary explosions and the troop losses were very heavy. The defenders were also subjected to an artillery bombardment that resulted in heavy losses.

Bangkok was under a CAP of 26 X Zeke, 14 X George and 12 X Frank when 29 X P-38J jumped them. Once the carnage ended 9 Zekes were shot down (4 damaged), 5 Georges were splashed (1 damaged) and 5 Franks were killed while 7 Lightnings were destroyed and 4 others were damaged. The Frank's introduction to combat had an effect.

Krung Thep was raided by 26 X B-25J, 47 X Mosquito FB.VI, 62 X Thunderbolt II and 24 X P-38J who did moderate damage to the airfield, caused many secondary explosions and inflicted heavy losses on the troops. A short time later 104 X B-29 rained their bombs down on the airfield adding moderate damage, many secondary explosions and heavy personnel losses. Japanese artillery once more demonstrated their inept usage of ordinance as they made some noise and did no harm. The Allied big guns replied and they dished out very heavy casualties to the Japanese.

Koepang was bombed by 46 X B-24D and the port was heavily damaged, there were lots of secondary explosions and very light casualties. 71 X P-38J attacked the port and flak damaged 4 of them while they did light damage and caused very light losses.

Lunga was visited by 33 X B-24J who did moderately heavy damage to the port and caused many secondary explosions.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was raided by 6 X Helen and had very light losses.

The Allied TF 27 miles W of Tori Shima was attacked by 27 X Jill and the CAP of 85 X Hellcat drove them off, destroying 6 Jills. No Allied ships ever saw any of the Japanese planes on anything other than radar.

Kwajalein was raided by 35 X PB4Y (8 damaged) and 21 X P-47D. The airfield was lightly hit, a single secondary explosion was reported and troop casualties were put at extremely light.

Gil and the rest of the Lucky 11 are dismayed as they are issued Arctic gear. “I guess there must be some place on earth worse than the Aleutians,” Brownie says. The rest of the crew shrugs, but nobody can think of a place. Gil just stares at the gear and wonders what it'll be like to be stuck in the middle of nowhere and freeze to boot.

Sam watches another twin motored plane, a Betty so he was told, fly past. A couple of the guys give it the finger, but nobody bothers to fire on it. “Maybe if they see so many of us here they won't try to retake this place,” a replacement says. He's told not to bet on it. The See Bees continue to struggle to expand the airstrip, but the going seems to be painfully slow. Sam does notice, to his satisfaction, that some work is being done to defensive positions. He still has a hole to fight from, but as an infantryman that's good enough for him.

Stick was flying a LRCAP mission over the TF that was shelling Palau and he marveled at the amount of explosions they dealt to the Japanese defenders. He wonders what it must be like to undergo such a horrible shelling, by such big guns and he's glad that he's sitting in his cockpit of the Corsair. Of course the mission ended without any Japanese planes being seen.

The training cycle seems to be easing up and to Gunny that can only mean one thing, action. The 2nd Marine Division sit at Ulithi ready for almost anything.

Elba was invaded and captured.

The morning's tranquility over Nanning was shattered when 26 X P-38J dove out of the sun and slashed through the 19 X Zeke and a Tony that were on CAP. 5 Zekes and the Tony were shot down while a Lightning was lost and another was damaged.

Tavoy was attacked by 119 X Liberator VI (2 damaged), 40 X B-24J, 18 X Thunderbolt II, 9 X Corsair IV and 9 X Spitfire VIII and the airfield was very heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions and troop losses were heavy. Allied gunners inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese troops.

Bangkok was swept by 24 X P-38J and they were greeted by 32 X Zeke, 12 X George and 7 X Frank. 5 P-38Js were shot down and 4 others were damaged while the Japanese lost 11 Zekes, 5 Georges (1 damaged) and 2 Franks (1 damaged).

Krung Thep was being protected by 18 X George when 19 X P-38J appeared. The Lightnings departed after downing 8 Georges and driving the others off. 8 X George had returned and were on hand when 47 X B-29 Superfortress, 57 X B-25J (1 damaged), 46 X Mosquito FB.VI, 47 X Thunderbolt II and 22 X P-38J attacked. The Georges were dispatched and 3 more were destroyed on the ground while the airstrip had heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions and heavy personnel losses. 99 X B-29 then came on and caused additional moderate damage to the airfield, caused a couple secondary explosions and inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese. The 18th UK Division was attacked by 4 Helens and 1 was damaged by ground fire as the unit had negligible losses. The the 25th Indian Division was tagged by 3 X Frances and 1 was damaged. The unit sustained extremely light losses. Japanese artillery made noise once again and once more did nothing to the Allied troops. Allied artillery inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese.

Kai Island was raided by 141 X B-25J and 24 X Kittyhawk III. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions reported and casualties were very light.

Koepang was jumped by 42 X B-24J and 41 X P-38J. The AA fire damaged 8 of the Liberators while the port took moderate damage, a single secondary explosion was triggered and the troops had very light losses.

Palau was paid a visit by 27 X B-24J and flak damaged 4 of them. The port was lightly damaged and a few secondary explosions were seen. Then 9X SB2C (1 downed, 1 damaged), 21 X P-39D (1 damaged) and 23 X P-47D appeared. The airstrip took very light damage in the attack.

Buna was bombed by 42 X B-17E and the port was lightly damaged, a few secondary explosions were seen and the personnel had moderately light losses.

Port Moresby was the target of 42 X B-24J and the AA fire damaged 1 of the bombers. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were a few secondary explosions and the troops had light casualties.

Lunga was raided by 31 X B-24J and the port was heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions and there were extremely light casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps had losses due to 6 marauding Helens.

Kwajalein was hit by 26 X PB4Y and 24 X P-47D for light damage to the airfield and a secondary explosion.

The SS Stingray, 22 miles S of Maumere, made a surface attack on a lone AP, hitting it 5 times with the deck gun and a torpedo.

An Allied attack at the crossroads about 78 miles W of Changsha resulted in moderate Japanese losses and very heavy casualties for the Chinese.

The Lucky 11 are rested and ready to go as their plane is given a last servicing before they depart for Alaska. They are scheduled to depart tomorrow morning. The prospect of Alaska has cast a pall over the crew and Jake tells them to relax that it's not as if it's the end of the world. “No just the _ss end of it,” replies Brownie. That raises a chuckle from the crew.

After work Gene hurries home without stopping at the bar. They told me not to go every day and that's just what I've been doing. The prospect of the spies no longer excites him as he's to tired from a long day of work.

Slim tells his boys to strip and clean their weapons because, “We could get the word at any time to go somewhere that we'll be called upon to entertain our Japanese friends.” The men grumble a bit, but know that Slim wouldn't keep after them if it wasn't for their own good. Gunny observed all of this and thinks that despite himself Slim has the makings of a born leader.

“Mother and daughter are doing fine, thanks,” says Pete to Mr. Doe. “Of course we could all use a bit more sleep, but the little princess hasn't seen fit to allow that as of yet.” The two men share the laugh over a cup of tea.

A V1 hit The Guards Chapel, across the street from Buckingham Palace, during Sunday morning services, killing 119 people.

Combat

The SS Guardfish, 24 miles NW of Truk, attacked an extremely heavily escorted AK and hit it with a torpedo. As a result of the fire started by the attack Japanese soldiers were seen going into the water.

Nanning was swept by 24 X P-38J and they were opposed by 13 X Zeke of which 4 survived to tell of the lopsided fight.

Bangkok underwent a fighter sweep made by 20 X P-38J. 33 X Zeke, 10 X George and 7 X Frank rose to meet them and 10 X Zeke (2 damaged), 2 X George (1 damaged) and 6 X Frank were shot down at the cost of 1 P-38J destroyed.

Palau was raided by 20 X B-24J (5 damaged) and there were a couple of secondary explosions and extremely light casualties. Later 9 X SB2C (2 damaged), 17 X P-39D (2 damaged) and 23 X P-47D caused very light damage to the airstrip and a secondary explosion.

Gili Gili was struck by 38 X B-24D (7 damaged) for moderate damage to the airfield, a secondary explosion and very light losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was jumped by 9 Helens who couldn't find anything to hit.

The 18th UK Division, at Krung Thep, was hit by 23 X Frances who ran into 11 X P-38J. 6 X Frances went down and another took damage as the unit absorbed moderately heavy losses. Then the 3rd Indian Division was targeted by 4 X Helen who managed to inflict negligible casualties before being driven off by the Lightnings. As usual the Japanese artillery spent munitions and did no harm. The Allied guns caused heavy Japanese losses.

The Japanese ships about 151 miles SE of Kagoshima were attacked by 13 X PB4Y and 39 X P-38J. 3 AKs were hit by a bomb each, with 2 catching fire.

An Allied bombardment attack at Tavoy resulted in moderately heavy Japanese casualties.

At the preflight briefing the crews that are scheduled to leave this morning are told to leave their arctic gear in the barracks and just to get on the trucks that will deliver them to their planes. “Gentleman, your destination will be Pearl Harbor. Have a safe flight,” the captain says and just like that their journey will begin. Willy, the navigator is concerned because he'll have no landmarks with which to navigate and if it's cloudy taking any kind of fix will be tough to do. He tells Gil that he'll need him to “ride the beam” into Pearl once they pick it up. Now Gil is feeling the pressure. Once they are on the plane and rolling down the runway the jitters melt away and they get down to business. The bombardier and gunners gather and begin a card game before they drift off to various sports for some sleep. Gil dozes off, with his headset on, as usual.

Ed has made a formal request that the 2 BBs stationed at Wake Island be sent to him before the next big operation as their firepower will be needed. Now all he can do is hope that it doesn't fall on deaf ears. He smiles at his staff and says, “No commander in history has ever gone into battle with everything that he wants at his disposal. Why should we be any different?”

Sandy got another letter today and tomorrow she and Dave will go into town so maybe she'll get lucky and snare some more.

Combat

A pair of IJN MSWs encountered a mine field at Teloekbetoeng and started sweeping it.

The SS Jack, 28 miles S of Soc Trang, attacked a very heavily escorted AP and calmly proceeded to put 2 torpedoes into the target which caught fire and was heavily damaged.

Ed's Old Gals swung back into action with another naval bombardment of Palau and the Japanese returned fire hitting the following ships.
CA Vincennes 2 shell hits
BB Tennessee 2 shell hits
BB Arizona 6 shell hits
The Japanese ground losses were placed at very heavy. At almost the same time 7 X SB2C (2 damaged), 23 X P-39D (2 damaged) and 22 X P-47D Thunderbolt added very light damage to the airfield.

Tavoy was bombed by 74 X Liberator VI, 24 X B-24J, 6 X Thunderbolt II and 5 X Spitfire VIII. At no cost to themselves the Allied planes inflicted very heavy damage on the airfield, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were heavy. The Allied artillery caused moderate Japanese losses.

Krung Thep was attacked by 42 X B-29, 46 X B-25J, 40 X Mosquito FB.VI, 3 X P-38J and 41 X Thunderbolt II. The airfield took heavy damage, there were a great many secondary explosions and casualties were heavy. Once more the Japanese artillery fired and once more they did no damage to anything other than the foliage. An Allied assault was repulsed with both sides taking extremely heavy losses, though the Japanese did suffer more.

Port Moresby's airfield was heavily damaged by 48 X B-24J (1 damaged). There was a secondary explosion and personnel losses were heavy.

At the crossroads about 78 miles W of Changsha a Japanese artillery barrage inflicted moderate Chinese losses.

A troop convoy will enter Petropavlovsk's harbor in the morning and disgorge men and supplies for a future joint Soviet/American operation.

The guys are exhausted from the flight to Pearl. When they get off of the plane the first thing they ask about is the latrine, followed by the location of the mess hall, and the barracks where they can shower and sleep. Gil is relieved that they didn't get lost. Willy gives him a friendly poke in the ribs, a smile and a wink. “Sure beats the crap out of Alaska,” he says to Gil. All of the Lucky 11 believe in one another and they work well as a team.

The news hits with a shock and Red shows the message to Cookie who says, “He hasn't done wrong by us so far, but this going in on something sight unseen is risky. How about we offer him a piece of the action? If he agrees then we go for it and if he balks then we pass.” Red agrees to this plan and he sends a message back to their lawyer in Honolulu. Now only time and the bank will tell if they have bought more land or not.

Gene's mother is concerned with him. “You are starting to spend to much time drinking beer after work.” He tells her not to worry and that he's a big boy now. Nobody has approached him and he has developed a taste for beer while waiting.

Sandy wasn't disappointed as she has 4 letters from Bill in her possession. Dave is happy also as some parts that he's been waiting for have finally arrived. He's busily talking to the freight agent, “This darned war is killing me. How long can I keep jury rigging stuff to keep the old crates on the road?”

Cherbourg was attacked by the Americans.

A short while later 115 X B-29 arrived and inflicted moderately heavy damage on the airfield, caused many secondary explosions and heavy casualties. The 18th UK Division downed 1 of the 9 X Frances attacking and the unit had no losses. Then 9 X Helen tried and dished out moderately light casualties to the 18th. Continued Japanese shelling has pinned the Chinese unit at the crossroads and the Chinese had very light losses.

The Lucky 11 have the day to do whatever they want, within reason. Gil decides to visit the beach, others head into Honolulu for booze and women so he tags along. Once they arrive he wishes them happy hunting and he kicks off his shoes and takes a walk along the sand. He stops under a tree and pulls a smoke out and just lets his mind drift. A boy from Brooklyn that had never been anywhere until Uncle Sam came calling is now basking in the sun on a Hawaiian beach.

Red tells Cookie that the lawyer jumped at the chance and that he is willing to sink enough money into their endeavor to hold a 1/3 share. They discuss this and agree that it's OK so Red sends off the message telling the lawyer to deal with the bank on their behalf.

Sandy went for a walk in the mountains and managed to return in time to prepare dinner for herself and Dave. He makes a comment about how a simple thing like getting letters from Bill changes her into a happy person.

Sylvia is busy teaching their new manager her job. She's learning fast and Pete is content to be running the pub. Pearl still isn't allowing them much sleep and though Sylvia nurses her Pete wakes up and keeps them company during the feedings.

The Red Army launched more attacks on the Finns.

The US 8th Air Force raided Berlin and synthetic fuel plants at Leuna-Merseburg and then continued on to Russia
