So, back to Mike, John, and seille points: since the goal of the allies is to throw the IJ timetable off and since the targets are well known, when playing against someone like QBall you have to think through how to accomplish the stated goal above, and then how to counter it.  As Mike suggests, it means you need to have some reaction forces in place and when QBall shows where his forces are you either react directly against those forces or indirectly by striking where he isn't.

The strategic depth here is considerable and very daunting to a new player.  If nothing else, you are not intimately familiar with all of your forces.  A player like Mike can rattle off not only all of his starting forces, but also what he can buy out and when.  This enables him to come with effective counters rapidly, and then choose the best of his available options.

Really good players like PzB, Nemo and some others set traps to eliminate the few allied assets.  Once you have Boise, Marblehead, Houston, Repulse, and PoW taken care of, the allies don't have too many other potent early weapons.  At least nothing that will be able to stand up to a couple of your CA's.  However, while those forces are in the DEI, all of your landings need to be protected against those devils. 

PS: and QBall is member of the elite players group.  So, not only is he aware of all of this, if you do trap him once, he will adapt quickly.

Bombardment missions put large dents in airfields... Sometimes you get lucky and tap into parked enemy AC or supply depots.

If you want to work contested waters with slower SCTFs, I'd move lotsa subs with aircraft and get them in the air for naval search. Use land based search AC also - anything you can to boost up detection levels. Set those Big-Boy TFs to patrol irregularly and give them a decent reaction setting. When planning your patrol route keep a safe distance from large enemy ports with mines... I've had SCTF "follow" enemy TFs right into those mine-infested ports. When my BBs hit mines it really hurts my feelings.

They are useful as Amphib escorts and to use as traps for the Houston/Boise/Marblehead.

CA Ashigara sunk right when she reached saigon port....really a loss that will hurt me.

However we're again on the run. Our amhib TFs are approaching Palembang from Singkawang... on the 24th we repulsed the first air attacks coming from Singapore... 20 enemy torpedo bombers and P-40s are shot down for no loss on our side... i fear, no i know, that his surface forces are lingering in the shadows... as i know that he still has 60 fighters at Singapore and nearly 80 bombers between Palembang and Singa... we're going to risk... The kongos are running at flank speed to reach the Kaga's group and join this decisive battle... subs are dispacthed all over the approcahing routes... 50 Netties and 27 Kates are based at Singkawang, along with 40 fighters...torpedo are loaded...let's hope for the best

60 Sallies will try to shut down Singapore AF, escorted by 20 Oscars and preceeded by 20 zeros on Sweep from Kota Bahru...


My second Mindanao invasion force has landed...we should finish the Mindanao campaign within the next 2 weeks.

More forces are gathered for Menado.

Rabaul fell, and we already estabilished there a decent base force with 21 zeros and 20 Betties with 6 Mavis. Air HQ is on its way...

In China things are getting a little bit better...near Canton we're flanking a strong enemy's army and we're cleaning our interior lines in the northern plains...

In Malaya 2 more divisions have landed at Singora, along with 50k supplies. Now we have 5 divisions there.... but we're still moving slowly...

Man...i'm really tense for the upcoming battle for Palembang....

Well, guys, i know i should'nt have picked up Q-Ball for my first japanese game.... but challenge is what really makes us better.... so i think i'm gonna lose, but i'm gonna learn a lot!  

However i really like this game. The air war is defenetly more realistic than my other game... smaller groups, smaller fights...more dispersed fight...COOL!

It's also true that i don't know my assets...i'm using nearly 20% of my ships...i'm trying to save as much fuel as possible... and also i'm not using well my subs.... they are barely spotting a single ship all around the map! I've always been bad with subs...but i hoped that, using the japanese ones, things could have gone better...but Q-Ball knows the right routes...he knows where i like to place my ships and act accordingly....will learn! I promise, i will learn!

Now....let's see if Kaga gets hit by those bloody torpedo bombers or if she manages to survive and help our invasion forces to get to Palembang safely!

In northern Malaya, the capture of this base is key as you can now rail units in and from here south to Singapore, you have roads to move more quickly. Make sure to have most of your troops in "Move" Mode mode unless they are in a hex with enemy troops. They move faster and you have little risk of being bombed from the air. If he does, use your Nates as LRCAP.

Once you capture Georgetown, I expand the Heavy Industry to 25. Singapore goes from 75 to 100 range.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 25, 41

Brad moved to Palembang several cruiser TFs... that engaged my screening DD flottillas.... we lost 4 DDs...but at least the dreaded cruisers didn't manage to get close to our CVs and our transports...

Then, during the day, our bombers were distracted by several storms around the Palembang area...and we didn't manage to catch them as we wished...however we delivered few good hits

His bombers didn't engage...strange! But at Palembang the a/c number rose incredibly!...88 bombers and 24 bran new fighters....

We bombed Singapore for the first time...no CAP once again...and we achieved a good result...

Davao fell to our 16th Army...very well...

And we also paradropped a regiment at Wenchow...north of Canton...we may be able to take the base tomorrow, closing the escape route for 4 chinese corps chinese Canton!

I assume sinking some enemy steel has put some wind back in your sails GJ?

You knew he couldn't keep up the CAP numbers he was throwing at you in Singapore, and now it seems you have made the cost of proactively defending the area too great. Keep the pressure up!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 26, 41

I've messed up with my amphib TFs at Palembang...i forgot to put them on threat tollerance HIGH and it ended up moving back to Singwanag when enemy TFs popped up once again near palembang... only my DDs remained in place, along with my MSWs...and got chewed by Boise and friends.... Now we're 4 hexes back and have to start the whole process of getting close once again.
The only good news of the day is that the ducth bombers took off from Palembang and got screwed by my Zeros.... 33 to 0 today in the air... his air force is bleeding everyday and now Singapore's skies are undefended and so are the skies over Manila/Clark

My Netties didn't achieve anything today....they keep on attacking those damned motorboats near Mersing

The othert good news is that finally my Kongos are back with the Kaga...

We conquered Kuching and are ready to land at Menado (here were were attacked by lonely vindicators...they were easily defeated by the mini-KB air groups)

In China our 1st raiding rgt conquered Wechow (north of Canton), closing the escape route for the 4 chinese corps that are sieging Canton. Now his southern flank is at risk.

In Burma, after the defeat of my 2 para regiments at Pegu, we've finally reached Moulmein...the enemy seems to be pulling out of the town cause we're threatening his left flank east of Pegu...

In Malaya we conquered Kuala Lumpur with our recon regiment, cutting the retreat routes for what's left of the malayan army.

Mindanao is not well defended. We should be able to finish this campaign pretty fast and then move over towards Amon area.

KB is moving towards Brisbane area, hoping to raid some shippings, while the PM invasion force is getting ready at Rabaul at Truk.

Hmmm.. you really should establish air supremacy first in the region before worrying about Palembang too much.

To me you are rushing things when these things don't need to be done so.

With airsupremacy you control seas around Palembang and he cannot fortify or move extensive troops there safely.

Now you are doing that other way round.. from top to bottom when safer course would be to climb upwards.

I think i'll push forward. More long range torpedo bombers moved to Singkawang. More naval search ordered. Wanna bag those damned cruisers (Houston and Repulse should, by now, be out of action for some time)

If your DEI invasions of key bases are all covered by CV air, unload fully in one turn, and are well planned, you wouldn't have cold sweats at night you keep telling me about on chat roulette.

The CV air coverage is key in my opinion. Every invasion Bill and Hartwig did (and are currently) doing in our game has had air cover, and you can't even consider sending in SAG...they end up as a fish reef. They are very well planned out, unload in one turn, and then once the base is taken (as you have been doing) Zeroes and Bettys are there the next day ready to shut down even more areas.

...and you're attraction to furry women isn't helping your sweats either.

Yes, you need to keep in mind the key Allied surface ships in the area at start that Pax mentioned. However, even those ships are meaningless if you have CVs present. I realize they can't be everywhere (your CVs that is). The allies plans in the DEIs and Philippines are so pathetic at the start of the war, I wouldn't even worry about them harming your ships. Don't let those SAG be the thorn in the side they're currently being.

ALSO- I have never played DaBabes...I hear it is a tad different than vanilla.

However, I am more of an orange sherbet guy myself.

Thanks Jeff, that's what i'm trying to do...invade always under a good air cover and fast as lightning!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 27, 28, 41

two good turns. The invasion of Palembang finally arrived in place on the 27th, 3 hexes northeast of the important base.
The allied cruisers have vanished...probably after the torpedo attacks that damaged the POW and sunk a ducth CL. Only mines and PTs remain to defend Palembang...
we estabilished a strong SCTFs cover, with 3 TFs operating to cover all the possible approaching routes.
Our Amphib TF is very big (a problem) and composed with several minesweepers and ASW ships. BBs and CVs are covering 3 hexes away with more LRCAP from Singkawang

Everything went as planned, a part from too many mine hits.... 10 ships lost but my troops got ashore in a pretty good shape.
Dutch PTs weren't a problem...

Overall, in the last two days, he has lost nearly 60 planes near Palembang. We're already evacuating our important ships from the area. Tomorrow we'll attack and we should take the base. With the conquest of Palembang the fate should come upon Singa too (which is daily bombed by 60 Sallies) and we could start planning the invasion of Java by the beginning of Jan 1942. I won't rush in the southern DEI-SRA. Places like Kendari or Ambon are important, but i don't wanna risk my mini.-KB too much there.
Mindanao should fall pretty easily now that we have 2 regiments ashore.
In Luzon we're closing the triangle Bataan-Clark-Manila and we started to bomb both Clark and Manila.

In SWPAC, recon flights over PM says that he left only 1 unit there...as he did at Rabaul.... where the ***** has he evacuated his units??? Lunga?? Noumea?
I'll keep on raiding south towards Sydney for another couple of turns and then we'll move north to support the invasion of PM.

In Malaya we're finally proceeding at a decent pace. With the RR in our hands we now are pushing towards Jahore Baru at a good speed!
