Well, finally got through the tutorial, but it's still rather confusing. Any advice?

I think I just need to get familiar with how to move around the field, between units, and finding out when enemies are spotted, etc. It all seemed to be happening around me, and the only indication I had were the messages in the log. Sorry, this was a rather vague post, I realise.

Play the tutorial with normal setting so that the Soviets get some armor. Then play it as Soviets.

You can replay the action from different viewpoints and different speeds.

I agree that having hidden units shooting at you is frustrating. Try different tactics like putting troops ahead of armor to see if they spot enemy units that the tanks don't see. Buttoned tanks don't see as well as unbuttoned. Unbuttoned tank commanders are higher off the ground than troops and can see better but mostly forward.

Yes, maybe your tanks are buttoned up. If they get hit by enemy fire and survive they button up. You have to unbutton them yourself. It's not automatic.
