Heh, not sure if "stick your spoke in" translates to the US, but here in the UK, it means to have your say - even when not invited!

Anyway, I'm looking at all these amazing games which Matrix offer, but not sure what to buy. I am very interested in squad-level games, and I've just read through the Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear beginners AAR thread by Missouri Rebel - thank you so much for taking the time to do that, MR. It certainly has me very interested. Are there any other games of a similar ilk? I grew up with the Squad Leader board game series, so I also like the "leader" aspect, which I see COH:ATB doesn't have.

So, fellow gamers, I would be grateful for your suggestions - please stick your spoke in!!

There is a saying aswell, "put a stick in your spokes"...which means stop you in your tracks, stop you from carrying on etc etc

I forgot to mention that I prefer turn-based games - real-time ones make me stressed!

What brought me to Matrix 10 years ago was Steel Panthers WAW for free. Enough there to keep you busy for years. Doesn't work well on Win7 maybe.

Conflict of Heroes is a classic die roll and card deck game. All your plans go out the window with bad luck.

You tried Panzer Command.

John Tiller's Campaign Series here at Matrix is a platoon level older game but a good value and still being played and worked on.

Squad Battles series at HPS or John Tiller's website is good for infantry, not so much for armour. Leaders are important. Board game like.

Combat Mission series at Battlefront are good games.

Not a lot of choices at squad level, not real time.

I'm a tactical player myself and you can't go wrong with COH.
Although there are no leader counters there are Command Action Points which is basically abstracted leadership.
These are pts which can be used to modify die rolls for rally or attack , or add pts to a unit for more movement or attacks etc.
The flow of the firefights is more fluid here as both sides are moving and firing and rallying etc one right after another.
There are no phases. A turn is over when both sides have used up their Action points for all their units and/or both sides pass.
A lot different from rally phase, prep fire phase, movement phase etc., but IMHO it plays out smoother.
The game has the right feel for tactical battles.

All terrain modifiers are present for combat and movement.
Although I would've liked weather, persistent burning wrecks and multi-hex buildings. But you can't have everything.
Expansions should also be in the pipeline as this is based on a successful boardgame with its' own expansions.

Anyway to use another,

How could I forget Battle Academy. Great fun game. Not as complex as the others. No leaders. I did make some Pacific theatre battles that have leaders. Game is wide open for modding.

Thanks very much for the suggestions. Yeah, I tried the Panzer Command demo, but... I dunno... I felt like it was running away with itself - "Wait! What happened there? Who's firing? How do I stop this thing?!"

Yes, I remember East Front by John Tiller - I had it years ago on a PC that couldn't handle it. I'll look into that.

I will check out Battlefront Combat Missions and Squad Battles, thanks.

If you plan on playing against a human on the lobby, do not update to 1.6 beta.

If you go to the Academy Games site or boardgamegeek, you can download the board game rules. I read them to get an idea where the computer game rules evolved from.

That sounds painful and I would hate to lose my spoke. But saying that, I think Uncommon Valor still represents the best value here at Matrix.
Also Steel Panthers WaW Generals Edition, Battlefield Academy and Highway to the Reich and Conquest of the Aegean are also great choices.
