One of my PBEM opponents can no longer find his saved games (.dat) using the saved scenario interface. Now another PBEM opponent has sent me his latest turn, and I can no longer find my saved games!!

Is there some trick to this now? I have the files in my save directory, I just don't see them anymore on my saved scenario list, so my PBEM games have ground to a halt.

With 2.0, the file extension became "uvs" instead of ".dat". Change the extension and you'll see them.

OK, I've renamed them, and I can see them on my saved scenario list. But now they do not load. They just take me back to the game preferences/load saved scenario screen, and the computer slows down for a minute or two, and I have to eventually exit the game.

The patch info sheet said you could just re-name the saves and they would work. This is incorrect.

What you actually have to do is go in and SAVE the games with the new file extension. YOu can do this through XP easy enough but a bit more complicated if you don't have XP. For myself, I found that saving the games from my mail folder to UV was the easiest route.

And yet I still lost one solo game . . . .

But all the pbems work fine. /cheer

I don´t know what your´re doing there butit sounds more complicated then necessary.

Just use your "windows explorer" or "my computer". Make file extensions "visible" and rename them, é voila.

No, not really. Stupid Win98 insists on naming them save001.uvs.dat.
I tried to rename them via "rename" in Dos mode. Renaming worked, but the savegames are still not found.
:(

OK, I explain again (it´s also stated in Davids post regarding the release of v2.0):

Make file extensions "visible" and rename them, é voila.

Make your file extensions visible by :

In "MyComputer" or the "Windows Explorer" just go to:

Tools -> Folder Options -> View

There uncheck "Hide extensions for known files types"

note: the path above is from WindowsXP. The path might by slighty different on other OSs. But you get the idea.

Marc

I just upgraded to 2.11 and did this procedure exactly as you outlined it above by renaming the files and unchecking the "Hide extensions" box. However all my saved game file slots are empty now. What do I do now other than uninstall and go back to 2.0? Thanks.

Elmo

P.S. - I tried clicking on an empty slot just for fun. The game goes back to the Main menu screen and then hangs.

It does work. I don't mean to be mean, but you're doing it wrong. Read the directions in the 2.10 update closely.

Thanks for trying to help, but I've read therm several times and they're not working for me.

To be clear I did these steps:

"1) The autosave in slot zero should be renamed uv000_autosave.uvs
2) The combat vcr replay in slot one should be renamed uv001_combatsave.uvs
3) The other files should be renamed, using the following convention:

uvxxx_scen.uvs where xxx is the slot number"

I then uncheck the box for "Hide extensions". I then start up the game in 2.11, go to the Load screen and all the slots are empty. If you see anything wrong with this please let me know what I did wrong.

Uncheck hide extensions first. Otherwise, when you rename, it's still hiding the .dat extension and thus you're not able to overwrite it.

Regards,

- Erik

Ok, I'll try that tonight. Thanks. Maybe it's just me but it wasn't clear from the 2.10 Online Instructions that you had to do things in that order.

Hi elmo3

If by any chance it still does not work when you try this tonight please feel free to send a PM to me with your email included and I will send you my email and I could fix them for you. I have done it for two people so far.

Cheers
Dan

You know, I can't figure out a really good reason why you guys changed the save game naming at this late a date, especially after a major patch.

If a consumer buys the game off the shelf, plays a few games, and then runs trueupdate, his save games will be gone. Yes, if you follow the directions, they'll come back, but you can see what happens in this thread -- for various reasons it still doesn't work.

And what was gained really? The description name in the title. Whee. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

XPav,

What's done is done, but we should have had the patch rename the files automatically. I think I might just post a small program to do this automatically since so many folks seem to have trouble with it.

Regards,

- Erik

Ok I'm back in business. Apparently even though I told XP to unhide the extensions it didn't do it the first time. This time I made sure the extensions weren't hidden and I was able to rename the files and my game sees them. Thanks to you all, and no thanks to Bill Gates, for the help.

Can you say "Windows is a piece of $hit"? Sure you can.

Just about any/every OS out there!

:)

Ask The Wargamer how they like their Windows based server which was hacked last weekend. They're still down. We use Solaris based web servers where I work.

Yeah right , that´s why they discovered serious security leaks (that could make Microsoft proud) in Linux OS recently.

As for webservers, that a totally different question, but not everybody can run, administrate much more afford more high end webserver OS systems. Despite the fact that every OS is hackable.

All this "MS is crap" fuzz is totally stupid IMHO. Actually they managed to make on the easiest to use and stablest OS systems ever. That is WinXP .

Yes, MS can give you headaches, but not more or less then any other stuff out there too. For the casual user there´s no alternative and for along time there won´t be alternatives. Well maybe except for those "fire and forgot" I-Macs ;) , but they ain´t stable or more handy either ...

That's a good idea, I was thinking of doing something like that myself if the stream of problems continued much longer :)

And people don't turn this thread into a windows vs the world debate, each OS has its merits and each has its flaws - leave it at that please.

Well, I am back to say that I still cannot rename my games sufficiently to make them work. I am using Win98 2nd edition. I cannot find a tool option to show extensions. I did rename the extensions to .uvs files, but I cannot see any further extensions.

Can you guys come up with a procedure for those of us who avoided XP, because at the time we bought our computers XP was a buggy piece of crap, and Win 98 was more stable?

estaban,

Go to 'start' select 'settings' select 'folder options' select the 'view' tab scroll down to 'hidden files' and select 'show all files' just below 'show all files' should be 'hide extensions for known file types' make sure this is not checked, click 'apply'.

This should fix the problem of the missing extensions. :)

No, the problem is still there. I reset to show hidden extensions, and then rebooted, and I still have the problem. The extensions are no longer hidden, but I cannot see the .dat extension.

I can see the rest of the file name, for example uv010_antti.uvs, for a game I am playing in slot 10 with a guy named Antti.

I have not been able to get off a turn for 3 weeks now, is there something else that needs to be done?

Hi, The .dat extension is no longer used. You need to rename all fils with the .dat extension to uvxxx_name.uvs

Hi, Yes you said that earlier but in your last post you sound like you are still looking for .dat file extensions.
There is no .dat file extension anymore. If you can't see it your ok.
