Those pictures are just out of (received from) "Curiosity" (AKA: MSL or Mars Science Labratory).

Curiosity, just landed on Mars (about an hour ago now). The landing was hyped as "7 Minutes of Terror" and an admittedly large gamble by NASA, due to the complexity of the landing system (which included dumping the heat shield, a supersonic parachute, a "skycrane" landing system, etc.). As the pictures attest, it was successful (which history has proven is an "iffy" proposition on Mars, at best)

Yes very exciting indeed, I've been following the adventures on Mars of the 2 other bots closely. This one looked even more promising... *if* it succeeded in landing that is, so I'm very happy it did land correctly. It's huge, weighs one ton and is as big as a car... so double

Everything went right... even Odyssey performed well and was able to relay those thumbnails above! (the actual touchdown of Curiosity was beyond the Mars horizon from Earth).  I wonder if anything interesting will come out of the MRO once they get the data decoded.

Awesome! Wanted to watch this real-time but had to prioritize getting some rest.

The engineers at JPL I know (I‘m a few miles from there) were real nervous on this landing procedure. A little Rube Goldbergy. But JPL has 28 other ongoing projects so this is not the whole ball of wax for that facility.

There is also an American flag that S. Ambrose planted on Mars in 1962.

Mars Landing Video

Now *that* was very funny

Oh and here's a more instructive video of the landing sequence...

(a thousand )

By the way I googled for a "Hitler -Der Untergang- parody" of the Marslanding but they haven't made that ... yet.

HA, you fired off a live one Orm. Give it a minute and we will have some history, Ambrose history that is, from warspite1/2.

I was reading a story about the right hand image, that blocky thing on the horizon. There is some speculation that it's a dustcloud raised by the crash of the other part of the lander which flew away after droppping the rover.

Still though, I want evidence of the moving rocks on Mars, ever see that website ? Google it, moving rocks on Mars. Freaky tiki.

The right hand image is pointing down at the wheel... perhaps someone was mistaking the MSL's shadow for a horizon?

And FWIW, these images were enlarged thumbnails sent via the Odyssey satellite before it lost line of sight with the MSL immediately following the landing. They were meant more as proof the MSL landed in one piece with the wheels down, than anything else at the time.

Ah. Different image from the one you referred to in your post above... you meant the right image on a different set of images!

Nope, isn't it the dark blob just to the left of the logo on your second image? (which looks to be a very wide angle compared to the first).
