3/21/42 The "Invasion Force" is moving in the direction (very slowly) of Rockhampton or Bundaberg. My patrols are not reporting many (actually any) cargo ships or troop transports. Such an invasion would be very daring, but that is almost certainly not what is going on here. So what is? I have reports of a possible CA and many DDs. The KB is still futzing around south of New Caledonia. His force is divided, and his purpose murky to me. It might seem he is placing some kind of easy victory in my lap, but this seems to be some kind of feint. If so, what is he concealing? I have yet to identify the fuel source for the KB, it cannot remain there long. If he considers such a feint to be required, what is it he is afraid of? In any case, this division of forces seems not to be according to Hoyle, but ...

3/22/42 Invasion force approaching either Rockhampton or Bundaberg. Today I have reports of troop ships among them. They should begin disembarking the day after tomorrow. Vontiger: Good luck, hip hip, and all that stuff. Jolly good show!

3/23/42 Still can't determine precisely where the landing is going to be. The KB is headed in the general direction of the invasion fleet. They should be rushing by now. Anyways, following is a report on day 1 of "The Battle of Rockhampton".

As you can see, Raijin was using his full powers. (the weather) Note that when I got the two bomb hits on two battleships, one carrier and numerous cruisers and destroyers, the weather was "light cloud". The forecast for tomorrow is clear skies, Raijin must need a break.

3/24/42 Eventful day. I'm not going to give you screen caps, I don't think that's necessary. The morning wave of my aircraft attacking his invasion forces scored a grand total of one hit on a PB (which is hardly consequential) that had already been struck by a non-dud torpedo from a submarine, and still it did not sink. A submarine also successfully delivered a non-dud to an xAK which was carrying some troops (the number is indeterminate) and it sank well out to sea. I believe the convoy in question is carrying base force type units waiting to land after he captures Rockhampton, their purpose being to build/repair the airfield/port there and to support air operations from there. They should wait outside the range of my Wirraways however, and I expect him to make that adjustment forthwith.
The afternoon raid of my Wirraways and Marauders was fruitful, with many hits on the ships unloading at Rockhampton. He may not realize it yet, but he is also operating in a veritable Hornet's nest of submarines. I think many travails await him there.
There is something curious going on though, his KB is dawdleing a lot and only slowly approaching the field at Rockhampton, sitting now a bit west of New Caledonia. I have reason to believe that this is not the only operation underway, and I'm wondering if he's operating the KB to be an existential threat throughout the Coral Sea region without actually covering any landings. I hope to force him to either poop or get off the pooper. We shall see.
Now, another matter has come up, in this instance involving Darwin and allied fighter squadrons in training mode. This is causing some immediate changes in behavior, and may result in more permanent changes, but all this is covered in a thread I began in the Tech Forum. Please go there and if you feel you have a valid opinion from your point of reference, post your comments there. We're really interested with what everyone else thinks about it.
The hiatus in the Japanese offensive in China is over in at least one area (west of Changsha) and it is quite desperate. I don't believe my handling of the Chinese incompetent, but he is really giving me what for there. Forgive me the colloquialisms, but it means my tail is so far between my legs that it proceeds me to my every destination.
Things are really heating up, I prefer that to the boredom of waiting for the next blow to land.

3/25/42 The Japanese landing at Rockhampton is probably nearly complete except perhaps for supplies. My air attacks were not very good and there was only one wave sent in. One of my subs sank an APB, but other than that they're not having much effect so far. The KB is approaching quickly now and should establish air superiority tomorrow. Curiously, all his ships with the landing TF's and bombardment TF have vanished even though I have plenty of search planes covering the area. That might have caused me not to have a second bite at the apple with my air attacks? The weather was partly cloudy. The Japanese mounted a deliberate assault on Rockhampton but the casualties were light on both sides. A DD TF made another visit to Tulagi, sinking two AKLs that were unloading fuel.
Here is something curious, I had 3 Dutch subs in transport mode trying to deliver supplies to Singapore when he captured it. For the last couple of days I've been trying to get them to return to Calcutta without success. I'd get this explanation that flashed on the screen in red, something about "coastal interference" and they just wouldn't leave Singapore. Yesterday I tried ordering them to just go 3 hexes north and I didn't get that red message but today they were still there. I've changed their mission to "patrol" and ordered them again to return to Calcutta. We'll see.
My air attack on the landing fleet was met by a small number of Zeroes. I had been dealing with Petes which were no match for my Airacobras. Perhaps he used drop tanks from the KB?

3/26/42 The Japanese are reported to have 12,000 troops at Rockhampton now. There were two or three sub attacks on CVs without result. The air attacks yielded 2 hits on a destroyer and 1 hit on a troop ship. Lost many planes. The Japanese did a deliberate attack again, with low casualties on both sides, but they reduced the fortification level from 3 to 2. Two curious things occurred, those Dutch subs are still at Singapore. I changed their home port to Batavia and ordered them to return. If that doesn't work (I just now thought of this) I'll create a new task force, put them in it and order them the heck out of there. The second thing is a P-39 squadron at Rockhampton took replacements (12 planes) but they didn't arrive at Rockhampton but instead at Aukland without pilots. Why didn't they arrive at Timbuktu, I wonder? I'm expecting more sub attacks on his CVs tomorrow, as well as more air attacks. The Japanese have effectively cut the rail lines between North and South Oz and that is a nuisance. While I may be able to hold Rockhampton, I don't expect to be easily able to eject him from there near term. I would think he'll have some difficulty supplying his troops there though. He's maintaining an interest in Tulagi, perhaps something will happen there soon. Sorry I'm not providing screenshots of the situation, there are just too many Opsec problems. I'm thinking that maybe half his forces are construction and support engineers of one sort or another. We'll see.

I'm not ready to report fully, but Rockhampton has fallen. While this is a major thorn in my side, it is also an interesting problem for him as far as supply goes. There is a question as to whether he is committed to action in the Indian Ocean theatre, suggesting that he's saving troops for some other strategic plan. Invading Australia has much to reccomend it, but it is a continent, and even the Aussies have difficulty moving around on it. His supply lines are tenuous, and the Sea is fickle. Also, the closer his forces are to me, the easier it will be for me to defeat them. Australia seems to me a good battleground. Await more info on the fall of Rockhampton, sadly that will not be positive for my side.

Geoff,
I'm in agreement with you about the pitfalls of investing Australia. It takes a significant amount of men and materials to take/hold bases on the Aussie continent. That favors the Allied player over time.

Remembering my Noob status here, as the Japanese player I almost never take Australia, but set up a curtain of Island AF bases that can be built up to handle the Nells & Betty's to intercept shipping between the West Coast and Sydney. Keeping a few SCTF there to keep him honest and you have used maybe 1/3rd of what you would need to take Darwin or Brisbane etc.

I know experienced players have brought Australia to its knees, and I commend the skills being able to do that, I just think its a huge supply drain and harder to keep the bases once the Japanese Happy Time is over. I usually (against the AI) start concentrating on Ceylon and India to deny him the Western Approaches (Africa, Club Med etc.) after pulling the curtain shut on Eastern Australia.

Just my $.02

The important thing here is to note that I thought I had another day before I needed to evacuate Rockhampton. I wanted one more crack at his carriers. I was wrong, and I will be paying the price for my gamble for some time.

3/28/42 The KB is retiring to the NE. It managed to slip through my sub screen without any attacks. The Japanese made bombing attacks on Port Moresby and Darwin, the results follow. Apparently the question about fighters on training missions may be moot, as none of mine were.
Vontiger's girl is all better now, by the way. It was the flu.
