AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jul 23, 42

Sub attack near Brunei at 66,85

Japanese Ships
TK Arima Maru #4, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
TK Azuma Maru #2
DD Tsuta

Allied Ships
SS KXVI

thats tanker number three in just a couple of days... amazing as we had nearly no attacks in the last months... while our subs score very well against the IJN heavy units the merchant marine hasn't been hurt so far, mostly because it seems our subs don't even get the chance to attack convoys... as we are operating our subs near enemy bases where the IJN just has to go (Palembang, Balikpapan as examples) I doubt we miss the enemy because the convoys are using different routes so I can only wonder if CF pulls out as much fuel as he is expected to... seems like convoys are going to these bases only now and then but not at the high rate that is required to move out the fuel as fast as it is refined... now I haven't played the Japanese nor have I really looked at the IJ side but wouldn't bases like Palembang require lots of shipping to haul all that fuel?

19 troops of a IJA Infantry Squad accidentally lost during unload of 124th Infantry Rgt

absolutely amazing to me that CF uses a full Inf Rgt to take this empty base... a small NLF or a base force would have done the trick, why using a full Rgt? That Rgt should be already in position to help against my upcoming and inevitable offensive towards the SRA... instead it is used to take an empty base...

Night Time Surface Combat, near Rabaul at 106,125, Range 11,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DMS W-9, Shell hits 10, and is sunk
DMS W-10, Shell hits 5, and is sunk

after the operation to occupy Babar our transports returned to base while our carriers and cruisers were sent towards Milne Bay to go into position to bombard Rabaul... I thought this would be a rather risky operation but the risk being well worth it... recon shows some 300 enemy aircraft at the base, 50% roughly being fighters, lots of bombers and the rest being probably recons... our task forces took position yesterday, were spotted but not attacked (yesterday was the most dangerous turn) so I of course decided to send them in as I couldn't see the IJN moving in heavy units from Truk in time so anything that could be a threat to my cruisers would have needed to already be in the area...

our recon daily reported a small TF being at Rabaul (with a good dozen ships disbanded in port) but I didn't expect that TF to be a threat so both my cruiser groups were set to bombardment with no surface combat group going in as I expected the bombardment group to be able to deal with the small TF at Rabaul...

when the combat popped up our assumption was confirmed as those two DMS aren't a threat to the incoming cruisers...

there is no coast defense at Rabaul which really amazed me and our heavy cruisers nuke the base... I can't believe that Cuttlefish just watched me going in position while not flying out his aircraft back to Truk when there was no strike the day my task forces were moving into position (looked like there wasn't even a nav strike ordered or just every bomber missed my armada of roughly 50 ships 9 hexes SW of Rabaul...

anyway, guess that bombardment should not have been a real surprise for the Japanese, while seeing all those IJ aircraft parked at the airfield sure was for me...

it's not only one cruiser group that bombards the place, there is an even bigger group following the first one also nuking the base, leaving the airfield completely cratered and destroying even more aircraft on the ground...

the base is closed for sure and will be no threat in the coming days while there are pretty much no operational aircraft left anyway... kept my destroyers from bombarding due to the fear of CD but it would have been a cake walk to also have our escorts bombarding the place...

looking at the airlosses, I am sure that our bombardment destroyed the majority of the aircraft the enemy had stationed at Rabaul... surprising to see there were no patrols or float planes at the base... there would have been enough fighters and bombers to put together a dangerous strike that could have really harmed our carrier group that is covering the two bombardment TF but we had no sign of the enemy even trying to launch a strike... like I've said, I can't see the bombardment being a real surprise so I wonder why the airfield wasn't empty today...

hmm, I really start to think over my opponent, why weren't these ships trying to get out of Rabaul? He has to know that we are fully aware of ships being disbanded in port (the base got 9/10 detection lvl), the base is helpless after the nuclear bombardment and there is nothing in the area that can keep me from bombing the port which is what we have ordered for today together with all SBD going after the airfield... weather was bad which prevented us from achieving more but now that the ships are damaged they won't get out for sure... staying in port meant sure losses while trying to flee would have probably meant more than halve of the ships getting out... if they would have tried to get out today, all would be safe as I didn't have most of my carrier groups on nav attack but port/airfield attack as primary mission (only the British were set to nav attack)...

reason for not going nav attack as primary and port/airfield as secondary was that I wanted to make sure to really strike the base today which didn't happen yesterday...

still some damaged aircraft there... though when looking at the aircraft losses of our carriers it is just too much for such a milk run... the number of damaged ac in the report is pure FOW, there is nearly no flak fire and there were not more than two or three damaged bombers...

we finally launch a strike on Rabaul again today, the carriers will retire now... pretty much most of those ships should be done anyway and there is nearly nothing left on the airfield... as in the previous strikes, we suffer just too many ops losses from really close range against nearly no opposition even though the combat report shows up with a horrible number of damaged bombers...

all in all the bombardment and subsequent air attacks on Rabaul were a full success (more so than expected as CF just kept all his aircraft at the base as well as his ships)... IMO we get too much for little effort...

a single enemy Division has left Ankang (strange direction to be honest, perhaps trying to get a retreat path for the cut off IJA units) and we have several Corps operating in this hex and the surroundings... it's a jungle/rough hex but if the Division doesn't get some reinforcements then it will be dead with no chance to retreat in the end... the whole situation around Ankang is desperate for the enemy with no chance to achieve something as terrain favours us and we have cut their supply lines... halve a dozen enemy divisions are cut off, with some of them in horrible state already after suffering defeats...

good day with the confirmed sinking of CA Atago during the New Caledonia operation...

And this is the victory points ratio, more looking like a '44 ratio but we are only in mid '42

the cut off division puts up quite a fight in jungle/rough terrain... but in the end, if the unit isn't freed it will be dead and as it stands now, I can't see a way the unit will manage to escape... as long as we don't suffer more KIA I am not worried...

And for comparison, the Allied ship losses... while I always try to lose as few ships as possible, I can't remember having had a PBEM at that date with such a ratio...

the result of this milk run to Rabaul against no opposition was four B-17 lost to ops... yeah, the unbeatable Allied 4Es... once more... and then there are ppl seriously saying they got 150 fighters at a base not being able to shoot down more than 2 or 3 bombers? first thought, grow up...

of course there is also a Catalina and a Hudson lost during nav search, but this has always been so ridicoulos that I don't even get upset about it, it's just too ridicoulos...

Jeez, that's what deck guns are for . . . does the game allow you to issue a reprimand to the skipper?

preferre the waste of torps over the cowardness of not attacking at all which we have seen with the original skippers that all have been replaced (with skippers having worse naval rating but higher agressiveness - which is something I find more than odd by the way).

what the Japanese failed to achieve in all their attacks and bombing 24/7 for 8 months already is achieved in one Allied attack with my units being wrecked... exactly today, another IJA division showed up at Clark, I can't believe it... it's obvious we wouldn't have kicked out the enemy even when facing only the troops that were there yesterday when we ordered the attack but another division here of course meant more horrible losses for us...

100% wrong decision to attack... jungle/rough, mountains and urban/heavy terrain means no attack under any circumstances if you face more than just a pityful force... 10000 av wouldn't be enough to overcome 2500 av in that hex, only the losses would be exxagerated on the attackers side while the caused losses would still be nothing to worry about... no surprise that we won't every attack here again, it also means we will keep that in mind for any further assaults in bad terrain...

Allied ground losses:
963 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 115 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 9 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 8 disabled

that's also a hex with bad terrain for the attacker but in this case we can afford the disabled squads while it will take us four or five attacks to see the enemy having no combat ready squads left and the division will then start to deteriorate... our units that suffer enough disablements that they run danger of suffering destroyed squads will be taken out of the fight...

Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 23

Allied aircraft
P-38E Lightning x 22

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 7 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-38E Lightning: 1 destroyed

it seems like Cuttlefish is planning to defend Manus (island NW of Rabaul) as recon shows some 20000 troops on the island (probably 250-300 av max) as well as enemy aircraft... as we've got a good number of P-38 already we have ordered our two best squadrons to fly a high alt sweep... the tactic employed by the IJ earlier is now already coming back to bite them into the a$$ as the Lightnings dive and dive and dive while the Zeroes die like flies... the single P-38 that was shot down over the target was hit during a short moment the Zeroes had the dive... all in all an excellent result, even though we have lost a pilot of our flying circus as this squadron fields the best USAAF pilots on the map... on the other hand, the Japanese surely still field excellent pilots too so that result is great... three enemy fighter units at the base but only a pityful number of fighters in total... hmm...

Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Japanese aircraft

Allied aircraft
P-38E Lightning x 19

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 3 destroyed

No Allied losses

here's the sedond squadron coming in, having the dive, taking down or damaging the rest of the CAP for no losses within the P-38... thought about also sending in the 4E fleet but refused to do so due to the danger of the bombers arriving early again taking massive losses...

we were using the new airfield at Terapo as staging base for our P-38 to shorten the range compared to coming from Port Moresby...

Those PI infantry divisions have poor firepower and experience. This is a bad combination when attacking good Japanese units in good terrain. Plus, you attacked a stack with plenty of Japanese armor. In 1942, the Allied infantry squads have little or no AT values. This is very important and probably had as much to do with your losses than AV or terrain. You had some tanks but not enough. Armor matters big time and Japanese tanks are plenty good enough in 1942.

If you attacked him with the same AV but used 1944 Indian squads supported by grant and sherman tanks then his tanks would have been totally negated and he would have suffered big time. Heck, Allied infantry alone can slaughter Japanese tanks in 1944.

You are pointing out an item I am paying alot more attention to lately. Japanese tanks are crappy, but they are Asian Panthers vs. Chinese or weak Allied units that have no AT guns. My opponent has massed his tanks in China to great effect; that's a real good use of them. Against the US Army, you're probably just wasting IJA tanks....

And you are also right on late-war Allied....the Sherman may as well be a King Tiger to the IJA, because they don't have the AT capability.

Use Tracker - look at Devices then

Squads

and

AFV

Look over the comparisons of things like anti-soft, anti-armor (or is it called anti-hard?), armor, etc. Far more important than AV alone. AV is only a counting of quantity.

yes, firepower of course matters but I was more hoping for an adjusted av enabling me to kick them out. Would not have been possible against 700 enemy av but with another IJA div bringing the enemy's av to 1100 it was even more hopeless.
