How ist this potential calculated?
I have so many bases but I am still outteched by Zenox..

I have 233000M population and 35 planets.
But the total research potential is not linear to population or number of colonies.
It is calculated with strategic value.. but there is some limit.

But what is the key to enhance this potential?

Is it best to remove all Labs from space ports.. And build massive Research stations with ten labs on locations with boni? like black holes?

My strategic value is much higher than zenox..

but still his science is massively better than mines.
If i negotiate with him I can choose between 20 completed researched topic which he has more than me..
But why?
I have 26800K strategic value.. and he has ~8000K..

Don't forget bonuses. I am a research whore in most games and in this game. Given that I cannot simply build labs to gain a tech advantage, I've become reasonably adept in a short amount of time at getting bonuses. Between race type, scientists and government, I can fairly easily come up with a 100% bonus on all research. I have a trick for concentrating ALL my research into high tech at the start of the game and I do a blitz on the research wonders, and build them, there's another 100% bonus on all research. I also build more than the suggested explorers even when my automation is set to 'high' for exploration, I build more than it then recommends. This for a number of reasons, but not least it allows me to find those planetary specials where if colonized, grant an additional 100% bonus to a tech discipline.

Note a couple of the tricks I use. I modify my high tech lab facility to house 20 high tech labs, no other labs. First thing I do in the game is build two such bases. While those are building, I upgrade my starting medium base to a modified large base and at the same time, I 'remove' (yes, I said remove) the non-high tech labs from it. I scrap any other research base unless it is giving me a nice bonus. This allows me to concentrate absolutely every research point into unlocking the research wonders (and of course building them) as soon as possible.

Once that high tech concentration is done (and usually after I've unlocked an additional colonization type or two), I upgrade my large starport again, this time to include 20 of each of the lab types. I then scrap all other labs (IE: the high tech labs I initially built), unless they are somewhere that gets me a bonus. With ALL my research coming out of a single source, it allows me to put ALL my scientists into a single location in which they all contribute all of their bonuses to all of the techs.

I tend to out tech all the other races to an absurd degree.

Thanks for your tricks..

I see the auto design of Space Ports is useless.. If you have 10 Large 10 medium and 20 small Star bases.. You have really too much labs and maintanance costs.

But your Idea is good. I will retrofit all Bases(that will cost a lot). And build 3 big Research bases on good defended positions with max boni to weapon energy and hightec:

But you still dont know how the total potential is calculated?
I think it is a function of 4th root
Something like this..
Total Empire Research Potential=(Strategic Value*Development*TotalPopulation*Xfactor)^(1/4)
If Research Limit is reached..
Total Empire Research Potential over Limit=(Strategic Value*Development*TotalPopulation*Xfactor)^(1/10)

So if you double your Total Population after the limit.. you have only 7% more research potential..
Is there a developer who can answer this question?

Not really answer, but it says somewhere that the game is DESIGNED so that enormous empires have only about twice the tech potential of small ones. Once you hit 1000k potential it seems to be asymptotic towards 1300k. Like the guy said above, get the 100% bonus facilities, the way of ancients bonus 50%, and scientists to get high bonuses. It also helps to conquer the Quameno for their racial bonus.

p.s. I always have more tech than the AI, because I sell tech and use the proceeds to crash research everything.
