Status: offline 		Where Eagles Dare was well done. Also, The Great Escape was flawless as a major motion picture. The Pianist faithfully portrayed the brutality and struggle to survive in WWII Poland.

Status: offline 		I'm coming late to the party, but one film not mentioned yet that I really enjoyed, and is probably in my top 10, is "The Train" with Burt Lancaster.

"From here to Eternity" is also up there, another Burt Lancaster film. (Man crush?)

I also give thumbs up for many of the films already mentioned. Waterloo and Zulu are two of my favourites as well. I just love the uniforms of the Napoleonic era.

Another film, perhaps not a war movie in the traditional sense, is "Seven Days in May" with Kirk Douglas and, oh man, Burt Lancaster (this is getting scary!).

So many more I'd like to comment on, but they've been covered already.

I don't know how you could say that, Pirates of the Caribbean is clearly the best naval warfare movie and it's American made.

It doesn't quite fit the "war flick" genre. That might be why.

This said, the best war stories tend to be books, in my opinion. There is something in war diaries that movies never seem to get right.

If you liked Apocalypse now, you need to read the short story that inspired it: Heart of Darkness, by Conrad. As for diaries, I believe you've read Junger"s war diary (Storm of Steel in english), this is one of the best. In the opposite trench, you'll have Genevoix and Drieu la Rochelle.

I watched "Das Boot" both in English and in German with English sub titles. I much preferred the sub title version. I understand the original actors also did the dubbed version, I still preferred the sub titles--I think the emotion was more intense. I have studied German, but I'm not fluent, so that might have helped me use the sub titles.

Status: offline 		I have the Dos Boot uncut version that is rather long and I watch it in German with English subtitles. Just something about a German U-Boat crew speaking English doesn't seem right. Still enjoy Zulu along with Zulu Dawn. I enjoy the longest day as well with all it's cameos. Flight of the intruder reminds me somewhat of the time I spent in the PI. Was their for the evac moved from Clark to Subic and was evaced on the Midway. The trick with the quarters off Cebu was really memorable.

They must have touched it up quite a bit then, because wasn't "Tora! Tora! Tora!" in B&W? I know Midway was in color.

Also, Midway was based off of a novelization of history. I actually had the book first, before watching the film, and it's probably still floating around somewhere... It may have been my first exposure to glossy inserts of WW2 photos in WW2 books. The photos were pretty sweet.

Tora, Tora, Tora was a color film done in 1970. B & W was passé for most motion picture films (outside of art houses) by then.

The film tells the story of the assassination of Reinhardt Heydrich in May 1942. It was made in the mid 70s and stars Timothy Bottoms and Anthony Andrews as the two main Czech agents that are flown in to Prague to kill "The Butcher of Prague". Martin Shaw plays a third Czech agent who ultimately betrays his comrades in order to save his family.

The film keeps largely to fact, although the final scene takes a few liberties with what actually occurred, but is worth it for the tear jerker of an ending.

Not sure if they actually filmed in Prague, but it looks like it.

At the end of the film they tell what happened to each of the individuals - including those that helped house the agents.

The soundtrack is, on the face of it, a strange choice - but works brilliantly. The music is synthesiser based ( pre-Kraftwerk!). It shouldn't work in a WWII film - but trust me it really does!

Sadly no copies of the soundtrack exist and the composer says it's uneconomic to re-create - which is a real shame......

Status: offline 		For years I have said the three best war movies are Das Boot, the siege of firebase gloria, and Sam Peckinpah's 'Cross Of Iron'


Mister Roberts (1955 film) should get an mention as the most realistic war film (judging by my time at sea) lots of really boring stuff, petty ship politics and drunken debauchery during shore leave.

Well, Apocalypse Now's premise is a mission set in the Vietnam War ( albeit a covert mission ), into unknown territory, with lots of action and mishaps along the way. So I'd have to disagree with you on that point, it really is a war/antiwar film, depending on which side of the fence you are on.

Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' ( on which AN is based ), is a truly brilliant book, and I would recommend it to anyone.

This is my favourite quote:-

'Going up that river was like travelling back to the earliest beginnings of the world, when vegetation rioted on the earth and the big trees were kings.
An empty stream, a great silence, an impenetrable forest. The air was warm, thick, heavy, sluggish. There was no joy in the brilliance of sunshine. The long stretches of the waterway ran on, deserted, into the gloom of overshadowed distances.

I agree, it is superb.

But for some weird reason, everytime I think of that scene I immediately have to think of Hot Shots 2 where Charlie and Martin Sheen´s PT boats meet in the middle of nowhere.
Hilarious scene, the first time I have seen it I nearly choked (having seen Apocalypse Now a few weeks before even more...).

I think what he meant to refer to was the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which included Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and Return of the King. Three different movies. All well done, but some folks have their preferences amongst the films in the trilogy.

For seige warfare, it's hard to beat Grond in Return of the King. The written prose describing Grond's appearance on the battlefield is inspires awe.

"Great engines crawled across the field; and in the midst was a huge ram, great as a forest-tree a hundred feet in length, swinging on mighty chains. Long had it been forging in the dark smithies of Mordor, and its hideous head, founded of black steel, was shaped in the likeness of a ravening wolf; on it spells of ruin lay. Grond they named it, in memory of the Hammer of the Underworld of old. Great beasts drew it, orcs surrounded it, and behind walked mountain-trolls to wield it."
