I'm in the middle of a game as the Wekkarans(?), who have a racial laser tech. I'd been researching it and avoiding the regular laser line of research and everything was fine until a retired found ship gave me a research bonus to a low level laser tech and completed it.

Now the ship designer is using the normal laser tech instead of my racial tech, the problem is that the racial tech is very obviously superior, along the lines of 5 times the damage and 50% more range. Is there some way I can get it to use my racial tech designs, or am I going to have to turn off auto ship design to play optimally?

Could be a bug. But someone who has used the ship templates for ai auto-design might be able to help. For now some hints are found in the release notes for the latest patch. Btw, you are using the latest patch right? Because that was supposed to address this very issue.

I am using the latest patch.

So I went back to the design screen and hit "Auto Upgrade Selected Designs" and they all started using my racial tech again.

But when the AI did the next set of designs by itself it went back to using the non-racial tech, and I had to go back and hit the auto upgrade button again. It feels like a bug.

Yeah, that sounds sub-optimal at best. Try posting in the tech support. Keep a save game handy.
